Directionally solidified iron-base eutectic alloys

Pseudobinary eutectic alloys with nominal compositions of Fe-25Ta-22Ni-10Cr and Fe-15.5Nb-14.5Ni-6.0Cr were directionally solidified at 0.5 centimeter per hour. Their microstructure consisted of the fcc, iron solid-solution, matrix phase reinforced by about 41-volume-percent, hcp, faceted Fe2Ta fibers and 41-volume-percent, hcp, Fe2Nb lamellae for the tantalum- and niobium-containing alloys, respectively. The microstructural stability under thermal cycling and the temperature dependence of tensile properties were investigated. These alloys showed low elevated-temperature strength and were not considered suitable for application in aircraft-gas-turbine blades although they may have applicability as vane materials.

A Directionally Solidified Iron-chromium-aluminum-tantalum Carbide Eutectic Alloy

A eutectic alloy, Fe-13.6CR-3.7Al+9TaC, was directionally solidified in a high gradient furnace, producing a microstructure of alined TaC fibers in an oxidation resistant alpha-iron matrix. Tensile and stress rupture properties, thermal cycling resistance, and microstructures were evaluated. The alloy displays at 1000 C an ultimate tensile strength of 58 MPa and a 100-hour rupture life at a stress of 21 MPa. Thermal cycling to 1100 C induces faceting in the TaC fibers.

On the dissolution properties of GaAs in Ga

The dissolution of GaAs in Ga was studied to determine the nature and cause of faceting effects. Ga was allowed to dissolve single crystalline faces under isothermal conditions. Of the crystalline planes with low number indices, only the (100) surface showed a direct correlation of dissolution sites to dislocations. The type of dissolution experienced depended on temperature, and there were three distinct types of behavior.

Room-temperature-operation visible-emission semiconductor diode lasers

There were two main approaches taken to develop shorter wavelength lasers. (1) Based on (AlGa)As and liquid-phase epitaxy, significant new results were obtained: Properties of these laser diodes (power output, spectra, and beam patterns), materials considerations, laser theory, and growth problems are discussed. The design of (AlGa)As layers is discussed from the vertical point of view, and various design curves are given. Horizontal structural requirements are also discussed. Experimental results from measurements done as a function of hydrostatic pressure are correlated with other results. (2) The first heterojunction laser structures using GaAs sub l-x P sub x and In sub y Ga sub l-y P at compositions, where the lattice constants are matched, were grown using vapor-phase growth technology and are described in detail, including experimental device results. Threshold current densities from 3,000 to 5,000 A per sq cm. and emission wavelengths from 6,520 A to 6,640 A were obtained at 77 K. The limiting factor in these devices is nonradiative recombination at the heterojunctions. Life tests on facet-coated (AlGa)As CW diodes are reported.

Large-scale V/STOL testing

Several facets of large-scale testing of V/STOL aircraft configurations are discussed with particular emphasis on test experience in the Ames 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel. Examples of powered-lift test programs are presented in order to illustrate tradeoffs confronting the planner of V/STOL test programs. Large-scale V/STOL wind-tunnel testing can sometimes compete with small-scale testing in the effort required (overall test time) and program costs because of the possibility of conducting a number of different tests with a single large-scale model where several small-scale models would be required. The benefits of both high- or full-scale Reynolds numbers, more detailed configuration simulation, and number and type of onboard measurements are studied.

Experimental evaluation of a breadboard heat and product-water removal system for a space-power fuel cell designed with static water removal and evaporative cooling

A test program was conducted to evaluate the design of a heat and product-water removal system to be used with fuel cell having static water removal and evaporative cooling. The program, which was conducted on a breadboard version of the system, provided a general assessment of the design in terms of operational integrity and transient stability. This assessment showed that, on the whole, the concept appears to be inherently sound but that in refining this design, several facets will require additional study. These involve interactions between pressure regulators in the pumping loop that occur when they are not correctly matched and the question of whether an ejector is necessary in the system.

It is indicated that large-scale V/STOL wind-tunnel testing can sometimes compete with small-scale testing in the effort required (overall test time) and program costs because of the possibility of conducting a number of different tests with a single large-scale model where several small-scale models would be required. The benefits of both high- and full-scale Reynolds numbers, more detailed configuration simulation, and number and type of onboard measurements increase rapidly with scale. Planning must be more detailed at large scale in order to balance the trade-offs between the increased costs, as number of measurements and model configuration variables increase and the benefits of larger amounts of information coming out of one test.

A design procedure for control/display systems

This paper proposes a design procedure for control and display systems in which levels of automation vary over a significant range. The elements of the primary analysis tool (the Optimal Control Model of the Human Operator) are briefly reviewed, and the use of the model at three levels of specification (information level, display-element level, and display-format level) is discussed. Based on observation and pilot commentary, it is assumed that the pilot allocates his attention to control the aircraft to the desired level of performance, and then, with remaining capacity, to monitor displays. This facet of behavior is incorporated into the design procedure so that regardless of the level of control automation, all systems are compared at the same level of control performance. The design procedure is applied to the longitudinal control of a CH-47 helicopter. The procedure points out the need for performance-workload relations for control, which are fairly well understood, and performance-workload relations for monitoring, about which little is known.

Accelerated step-temperature aging of Al/x/Ga/1-x/As heterojunction laser diodes

Double-heterojunction A2(0.3)Ga(0.7)As/Al(0.08)Ga(0.92)As lasers (oxide-striped and Al2O3 facet coated) were subjected to step-temperature aging from 60 to 100 C. The change in threshold current and spontaneous output was monitored at 22 C. The average time required for a 20% pulsed threshold current increase ranges from about 500 h, when operating at 100 C, to about 5000 h at a 70 C ambience. At 22 C, the extrapolated time is about 1 million h. The time needed for a 50% spontaneous emission reduction is of the same order of magnitude. The resulting activation energies are approximately 0.95 eV for laser degradation and approximately 1.1 eV for the spontaneous output decrease

GPS-aided Space Shuttle navigation

In the present paper, specific GPS (Global Positioning System) aided Shuttle navigation are presented as examples of the navigation performance prediction process. The process described is a statistical covariance error analysis. To facilitate detailing, the process is broken down into four portions with sharply limited interfaces. Considerations of mission scenarios form one distinct package of computer routines. Simulation of the onboard navigation filter is another facet of the process, as are the larger system covariance program and the GPS segment covariance simulation. The combination of these computer tools permits proper evaluation of the multitude of correlated error sources affecting GPS-aided Shuttle navigation.

Uniform magnesium oxide adsorbents

Kr adsorption on MgO is used to characterize the surface uniformity of MgO smoke and thermally decomposed Mg(OH)2. It is found that initially heterogeneous samples develop progressively sharper stepwise isotherms with increasingly-high-temperature heat treatment, apparently due to the removal of imperfections and high-energy facets, leaving surfaces of highly uniform (100) planes.
