Light scalar meson and decay constant in SU(3) gauge theory with eight dynamical flavors

The SU(3) gauge theory with N f = 8 nearly massless Dirac fermions has long been of theoretical and phenomenological interest due to the near-conformality arising from its proximity to the conformal window. One particularly interesting feature is the emergence of a relatively light, stable flavor-singlet scalar meson σ ( J P C = 0 + + ) in contrast to the N f = 2 theory QCD. In this work, we study the finite-volume dependence of the σ meson correlation function computed in lattice gauge theory and determine the σ meson mass and decay constant extrapolated to the infinite-volume limit. We also determine the infinite-volume mass and decay constant of the flavor-nonsinglet scalar meson a 0 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for the lepton-flavor violating decay B s 0 → ϕ μ ± τ ∓

A search for the lepton-flavor violating decays B s 0 → ϕ μ ± τ ∓ is presented, using a sample of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . The τ leptons are selected using decays with three charged pions. No significant excess is observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be B ( B s 0 → ϕ μ ± τ ∓ ) < 1.0 × 10 − 5 at 90% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Measurement of the branching fraction of the decay J / ψ → p p ¯ η

A high-precision measurement of the branching fraction of the decay J / ψ → p p ¯ η is performed using ( 10 087 ± 44 ) × 10 6 J / ψ events recorded by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The branching fractions of the two decays J / ψ → p p ¯ η ( η → γ γ ) and J / ψ → p p ¯ η ( η → π + π − π 0 ) are measured individually to be B ( J / ψ → p p ¯ η ( η → γ γ ) ) = ( 1.480 ± 0.001 ± 0.024 ) × 10 − 3 and B ( J / ψ → p p ¯ η ( η → π + π − π 0 ) ) = ( 1.557 ± 0.003 ± 0.038 ) × 10 − 3 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Both results are compatible within their uncorrelated systematic uncertainties. The combined result is B ( J / ψ → p p ¯ η ) = ( 1.495 ± 0.001 ± 0.023 ) × 10 − 3 , where the first uncertainty is the combined statistical uncertainty and the second one the combined systematic uncertainty of both analyses, incorporating correlations between them. In addition, the p p ¯ threshold region is investigated for a potential threshold enhancement, and no evidence for one is observed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the D * longitudinal polarization in B 0 → D * − τ + ν τ decays

The longitudinal polarization fraction of the D * meson is measured in B 0 → D * − τ + ν τ decays, where the τ lepton decays to three charged pions and a neutrino, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb − 1 . The D * polarization fraction F L D * is measured in two q 2 regions, below and above 7 GeV 2 / c 4 , where q 2 is defined as the squared invariant mass of the τ ν τ system. The F L D * values are measured to be 0.52 ± 0.07 ± 0.04 and 0.34 ± 0.08 ± 0.02 for the lower and higher q 2 regions, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The average value over the whole q 2 range is F L D * = 0.41 ± 0.06 ± 0.03 . These results are compatible with the Standard Model predictions. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

By analyzing e + e − annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.93 fb − 1 , collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the semileptonic decays D 0 → K − η e + ν e , D + → K S 0 η e + ν e and D + → η η e + ν e for the first time. We present evidence for D 0 → K − η e + ν e with a significance of 3.3 σ . The branching fraction of D 0 → K − η e + ν e is measured to be ( 0.8 4 − 0.34 + 0.29 ± 0.22 ) × 10 − 4 . No significant signals are observed for the decays D + → K S 0 η e + ν e and D + → η η e + ν e and we set the upper limits on their branching fractions. Study of the decay J / ψ → ϕ π 0 η

Based on ( 10.09 ± 0.04 ) × 10 9 J / ψ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis of the decay J / ψ → ϕ π 0 η is performed. We observe for the first time two new structures on the ϕ η invariant mass distribution, with significances exceeding 27 σ and 13 σ ; the first with J PC = 1 + − , mass M = ( 1908 ± 6 ( stat ) − 4 + 8 ( sys ) ) MeV / c 2 , and width Γ = ( 175 ± 13 ( stat ) − 16 + 7 ( sys ) ) MeV , the second with J PC = 1 − − , mass M = ( 1992 ± 12 ( stat ) − 6 + 15 ( sys ) ) MeV / c 2 , and width Γ = ( 132 ± 22 ( stat ) − 4 + 17 ( sys ) ) MeV . These measurements provide important input for the strangeonium spectrum. In addition, the f 0 ( 980 ) − a 0 ( 980 ) 0 mixing signal in J / ψ → ϕ f 0 ( 980 ) → ϕ a 0 ( 980 ) 0 and the corresponding electromagnetic decay J / ψ → ϕ a 0 ( 980 ) 0 are measured with improved precision, providing crucial information to understand the nature of a 0 ( 980 ) 0 and f 0 ( 980 ) . Search for the decay B 0 → γ γ using Belle and Belle II data

We report the result of a search for the rare decay B 0 → γ γ using a combined dataset of 753 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and 387 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment from decays of the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance produced in e + e − collisions. A simultaneous fit to the Belle and Belle II data sets yields 11.0 − 5.5 + 6.5 signal events, corresponding to a 2.5 σ significance. We determine the branching fraction B ( B 0 → γ γ ) = ( 3.7 − 1.8 + 2.2 ( stat ) ± 0.5 ( syst ) ) × 10 − 8 and set a 90% credibility level upper limit of B ( B 0 → γ γ ) < 6.4 × 10 − 8 . NLO SMEFT electroweak corrections to Higgs boson decays to four leptons in the narrow width approximation

Some of the most precise measurements of Higgs boson couplings are from the Higgs decays to 4 leptons, where deviations from the Standard Model predictions can be quantified in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). In this work, we present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) SMEFT electroweak calculation of the rate for H → ℓ + ℓ − Z which we combine with the NLO SMEFT result for Z → ℓ + ℓ − to obtain the NLO rate for the H → 4 lepton process in the narrow width approximation. The NLO calculation provides sensitivity to a wide range of SMEFT operators that do not contribute to the rate at lowest order and demonstrates the importance of including correlations between the effects of different operators when extracting limits on SMEFT parameters. We show that the extraction of the Higgs trilinear coupling from the decay H → ℓ + ℓ − Z , Z → ℓ + ℓ − in the narrow width approximation strongly depends on the contributions of other operators that first occur at NLO. Finite width effects in nonleptonic D -meson decays

Many analyses of two-body nonleptonic decays of D -mesons rely on flavor S U ( 3 ) symmetry relations and fits of experimental data of decays rates to extract the universal transition amplitudes. Such fits assume that the final state mesons are well-defined asymptotic states of QCD. We develop a technique to take into account the finite width effects of the final state mesons and study their effects on the extracted values of transition amplitudes. New strategies for new physics search with Λ b → Λ ν ν ¯ decays

We examine the new physics sensitivity of the rare decay Λ b → Λ ν ν ¯ , which can be accessible at future Z -pole machines like Future Circular Collider and Circular Electron Positron Collider. We find that the longitudinal polarization of Λ b baryons produced in Z decays introduces a novel observable, the forward-backward asymmetry A FB ↑ in the angle between the outgoing Λ momentum and the Λ b spin. We provide Standard Model predictions for the Λ b → Λ ν ν ¯ branching ratio and A FB ↑ , and show that future precision measurements of these observables are complementary and probe new physics scales comparable to other b → s ν ν ¯ and b → s ℓ + ℓ − processes. We also show that the zero crossing of the forward-backward asymmetry offers a robust test of form factor calculations independent of new physics. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Measurement of the branching fraction, polarization, and time-dependent C P asymmetry in B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays and constraint on the CKM angle ϕ 2

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and fraction of longitudinal polarization of B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays, which have two π 0 ’s in the final state. We also measure time-dependent C P violation parameters for decays into longitudinally polarized ρ + ρ − pairs. This analysis is based on a data sample containing ( 387 ± 6 ) × 10 6 ϒ ( 4 S ) mesons collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider in 2019–2022. We obtain B ( B 0 → ρ + ρ − ) = ( 2.8 9 − 0.22 + 0.23 − 0.27 + 0.29 ) × 10 − 5 , f L = 0.92 1 − 0.025 + 0.024 − 0.015 + 0.017 , S = − 0.26 ± 0.19 ± 0.08 , and C = − 0.02 ± 0.1 2 − 0.05 + 0.06 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We use these results to perform an isospin analysis to constrain the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle ϕ 2 and obtain two solutions; the result consistent with other Standard Model constraints is ϕ 2 = ( 92.6 − 4.7 + 4.5 ) ° . Superexponential primordial black hole production via delayed vacuum decay

If a cosmological first-order phase transition occurs sufficiently slowly, delayed vacuum decay may lead to the formation of primordial black holes. Here we consider a simple model as a case study of how the abundance of the produced black holes depends on the model’s input parameters. We demonstrate, using both numerical and analytical arguments and methods, that the black hole abundance is controlled by a double, “super”-exponential dependence on the three-dimensional Euclidean action over temperature at its minimal value. We show that a modified expansion rate during the phase transition, such as one driven by an additional energy density component, leads to a weaker dependence on the underlying model parameters, but maintains the same superexponential structure. We argue that our findings generalize to any framework of black hole production via delayed vacuum decay. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Search for resonance-enhanced C P and angular asymmetries in the Λ c + → p μ + μ − decay at LHCb

The first measurement of the C P asymmetry of the decay rate ( A C P ) and the C P average ( Σ A FB ) and C P asymmetry ( Δ A FB ) of the forward-backward asymmetry in the muon system of Λ c + → p μ + μ − decays is reported. The measurement is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions, recorded by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 . The asymmetries are measured in two regions of dimuon mass near the ϕ -meson mass peak. The dimuon-mass integrated results are A C P = ( − 1.1 ± 4.0 ± 0.5 ) % , Σ A FB = ( 3.9 ± 4.0 ± 0.6 ) % , Δ A FB = ( 3.1 ± 4.0 ± 0.4 ) % , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with the conservation of C P symmetry and the Standard Model expectations. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Measurement of the Jet Mass Distribution and Top Quark Mass in Hadronic Decays of Boosted Top Quarks in $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ TeV

A measurement is reported of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks produced in pp collisions at s=13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The measurement is performed in the lepton+jets channel of tt¯ events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay t→bW→bqq¯′ are reconstructed as a single jet with transverse momentum larger than 400 GeV. The tt¯ cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded at the particle level and used to extract a value of the top quark mass of 172.6±2.5 GeV. A novel jet reconstruction technique is used for the first time at the LHC, which improves the precision by a factor of 3 relative to an earlier measurement. This highlights the potential of measurements using boosted top quarks, where the new technique will enable future precision measurements.

Ab Initio Treatment of Collective Correlations and the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 48 Ca

Working with Hamiltonians from chiral effective field theory, we develop a novel framework for describing arbitrary deformed medium-mass nuclei by combining the in-medium similarity renormalization group with the generator coordinate method. The approach leverages the ability of the first method to capture dynamic correlations and the second to include collective correlations without violating symmetries. In this work, we use our scheme to compute the matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double beta decay of 48 Ca to 48 Ti, and find it to have the value 0.61, near or below the predictions of most phenomenological methods. The result opens the door to ab initio calculations of the matrix elements for the decay of heavier nuclei such as 76 Ge, 130 Te, and 136 Xe.

Properties of 187 Ta Revealed through Isomeric Decay

Mass-separated 187 Ta114 in a high-spin isomeric state has been produced for the first time by multi-nucleon transfer reactions, employing an argon gas stopping cell and laser ionisation. Here, internal $γ$ rays revealed a $T$ 1/2 = 7.3±0.9 s isomer at 1778±1 keV, which decays through a rotational band with perturbations associated with the approach to a prolate-oblate shape transition. Model calculations show less influence from triaxiality compared to heavier elements in the same mass region. The isomer decay reduced $E$2 hindrance factor, $f$ $ν$ = 27±1, supports the interpretation that axial symmetry is approximately conserved.
