Gauge R & R studies for angular measurements

Angular measurements lie on the circumference of a circle and have different characteristics than standard scalar measurements. For applications involving angular data, treating the measured values as scalars can lead to misinterpretation of results if its wrap-around nature is not taken into account. In this article, we propose a variance components wrapped normal model for angular measurements that is analogous to the standard normal model for continuous measurements. This model allows decomposition of contributions to the overall variance to be separated and compared to understand the drivers of the spread of the data. In this work, we analyze gauge R & R study data using Bayesian methods and illustrate the use of this wrapped normal model with simulated and real data. We also performed a small simulation study in considering the design of gauge R & R studies with angular measurements.

A molecular dynamics survey of grain boundary energy in uranium dioxide and cerium dioxide

Uranium dioxide (UO 2 ) is the primary fuel material that is used in current nuclear reactors. As one of the most fundamental material parameters, grain boundary (GB) energy strongly influences many fuel properties, and the influences depend on the characters and properties of individual GBs. Using molecular dynamics simulations, a high throughput survey of GB energy in UO 2 was carried out for the purpose of elucidating the roles of GB geometry such as misorientation and inclination, as well as the bonding nature of UO 2 , in affecting GB energy. GB energies in CeO 2 were calculated as well for comparison with UO2toinvestigate the generality of GB energy anisotropy in fluorite phase oxides. The results show significant GB energy anisotropy in both UO 2 and CeO 2 that is associated with the cubic symmetry of the fluorite structure. More interestingly, the GB anisotropy is found to be dependent not only on the crystal structure but also the ionic bonding. As such, the GB energy anisotropy in fluorite oxides has significant differences compared with that in fcc metals. We report that the data obtained and the increased knowledge on GB anisotropy will facilitate GB engineering for nuclear fuels with improved properties

Application of machine learning to estimate fireball characteristics and their uncertainty from infrared spectral data

Experiments or events involving high explosives (HE) can be monitored remotely by infrared (IR) sensors to gather information about the configuration or materials involved in the device. Researchers at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) developed a phenomenological model for HE fireball spectra in the IR range that allows for parameters to be extracted from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) data. This model includes parameters tied to physical characteristics of the fireball: temperature, size, soot, and gas concentrations. Previous works have sought to recover these parameters by the fitting of either whole spectra or select wavenumber bands to this phenomenological model. Difficulties arise due to the complex relationships between the parameters to be fit. Uncertainty quantification of the estimated fireball parameters is also problematic since HE experiments do not have any ground truth information on the parameters. It is suggested that artificial neural network (ANN) based approaches may be well suited to this problem, because of their ability to capture complex and highly nonlinear relationships. As such, this work seeks to explore the efficacy of deep artificial neural networks (DNNs) for this problem of parameter recovery from spectra and to also investigate the uncertainty of recovering the fireball parameters from FTIR data. Networks are designed using the hyperparameter optimization tool Hyperopt and trained/tested on artificial data generated using the phenomenological model developed by AFIT. The results of applying the network to the artificial data set are compared to a physics-based band approach that uses a selected number of bands based on their physical properties. Information on the uncertainty of estimating parameters from remotely sensed experimental data is obtained by treating the accuracy of the DNN model on artificial data as an upper bound and by examining the impact of emissivity due to soot on parameter estimation error; the results for artificial data are likely to be optimistic as compared to recovering parameters from experimental data.

Precursor recommendation for inorganic synthesis by machine learning materials similarity from scientific literature

Synthesis prediction is a key accelerator for the rapid design of advanced materials. However, determining synthesis variables such as the choice of precursor materials is challenging for inorganic materials because the sequence of reactions during heating is not well understood. In this work, we use a knowledge base of 29,900 solid-state synthesis recipes, text-mined from the scientific literature, to automatically learn which precursors to recommend for the synthesis of a novel target material. The data-driven approach learns chemical similarity of materials and refers the synthesis of a new target to precedent synthesis procedures of similar materials, mimicking human synthesis design. When proposing five precursor sets for each of 2654 unseen test target materials, the recommendation strategy achieves a success rate of at least 82%. Our approach captures decades of heuristic synthesis data in a mathematical form, making it accessible for use in recommendation engines and autonomous laboratories.

A prospective on machine learning challenges, progress, and potential in polymer science

Abstract Artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) continue to see increasing interest in science and engineering every year. Polymer science is no different, though implementation of data-driven algorithms in this subfield has unique challenges barring widespread application of these techniques to the study of polymer systems. In this Prospective, we discuss several critical challenges to implementation of ML in polymer science, including polymer structure and representation, high-throughput techniques and limitations, and limited data availability. Promising studies targeting resolution of these issues are explored, and contemporary research demonstrating the potential of ML in polymer science despite existing obstacles are discussed. Finally, we present an outlook for ML in polymer science moving forward. Graphical Abstract

BOPTEST: Initial FRP Test Case Development

To support an emulator model development of Building Optimization Testing (BOPTEST) framework, a team at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory developed a medium-sized office building written in Modelica to serve as a reference test case. The reference test case was modeled based on an actual research platform that represents a typical medium-sized office building. This test case would encourage model-based design and testing of new controllers in which a developer first prototypes and debugs on a model before implementing in the real world. The developed preliminary model and control parameters will be further calibrated and tuned with actual measured data from experiments

Brain Connectivity Workshop Series Report

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) BRAIN Initiative aims to accelerate development and application of technologies that show how individual brain cells in complex neural circuits interact at the speed of thought and action. Complete wiring diagrams of the mammalian brain will revolutionize the capabilities of researchers to formulate and test models of how activity within brain circuits drives coordinated function and behavior. A top priority for the BRAIN Initiative, motivated by the strategic guidance of the BRAIN 2.0 Working Group report, is to muster the resources and foster the collaborations needed to generate these wiring diagrams at the level of long-range projections (“projectomes”) and synapses (“connectomes”) in whole mammalian brains, including those from rodents, humans, and other large-brained mammals. Achieving the scale and resolution necessary to characterize and use these projectomes and connectomes will not only push the boundaries of current imaging and computational capabilities to generate faster, cheaper, and more scalable technologies, but also drive broad innovation in data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

Southwest Regional Partnership on Carbon Sequestration (Phase III) Underground Source of Drinking Water Monitoring at the Farnsworth Unit

The Ogallala aquifer is identified as the only underground source of drinking water (USDW) aquifer in the vicinity of the FWU. Throughout the span of the SWP project at the FWU, groundwater samples from the Ogallala Aquifer were collected and analyzed on a regular basis to obtain information that reflects the water quality baseline and any potential leakage, and to facilitate effective simulations and risk assessment. To date, hundreds of samples have been collected and tested. The water analysis results suggest that the Ogallala groundwater quality maintains stable and potable, and no leakage is indicated by these data.

Complete and Correct Transfer of Information (CACTI)

Many distributed systems, file transfer mechanisms, and message passing systems offer reliability mechanisms such as acknowledgements, retries, and durability. While these tools may be “good enough” for their typical use cases, they may not offer sufficient coverage for the wide range of faults that impact data transfers and communication. A gap in the reliability measures may lead to some small amount of data loss. Some high-consequence systems cannot tolerate the loss or corruption of even a single record. We present seven principles that will counter a wide range of faults and protect against data loss and corruption. These principles bring together lessons learned from a wide range of technologies and can inform appropriate system design and application usage. These principles will help readers reason on how prevent data loss in a multi-hop pipeline and how to properly use tools that may have a deficiency in reliability.

Method and apparatus for temperature and voltage management control

A method and apparatus for managing processing power determine a supply voltage to supply to a processing unit, such as a central processing unit (CPU) or graphics processing unit (GPU), based on temperature inversion based voltage, frequency, temperature (VFT) data. The temperature inversion based VFT data includes supply voltages and corresponding operating temperatures that cause the processing unit's transistors to operate in a temperature inversion region. In one example, the temperature inversion based VFT data includes lower supply voltages and corresponding higher temperatures in a temperature inversion region of a processing unit. The temperature inversion based VFT data is based on an operating frequency of the processing unit. The apparatus and method adjust a supply voltage to the processing unit based on the temperature inversion based VFT data.
