Rotary shutter mechanism contains optical elements

Two cylindrical shutter mechanisms having fixed outer sleeves and rotating inner sleeves use single stepping motor and Geneva mechanism to sequentially move optical components into path of ultraviolet monochromator for output control to photomultiplier. Photometric and wavelength calibration sources insure shutter positions according to operational phases.

Analytical solution for the wind-driven circulation in a lake containing an island

An analysis was carried out to determine analytically the effect of an island on the wind driven currents in a shallow lake (or sea). A general analysis is developed that can be applied to a large class of lake and island geometries and bottom topographies. Detailed numerical results are obtained for a circular island located eccentrically or concentrically in a circular lake with a logarithmic bottom topography. It is shown that an island can produce volume flow (vertically integrated velocities) gyres that are completely different from those produced by a normal basin without an island. These gyres in the neighborhood of the island will produce different velocity patterns, which include the acceleration of flow near the island shore.

An experimental study of axisymmetric modes in various propellant tanks containing liquid

An experimental study of several models used to analyze the longitudinal dynamics of oscillations in launch vehicle propellant tanks, is presented. Several vehicle structural configurations are considered: hemispherical and spherical, cylindrical and spherical, and semiellipsoidal and ellipsoidal. Various bulkheads and flanges are used with each configuration. The results are given in graphs.

An elastic analysis of stresses in a uniaxially loaded sheet containing an interference-fit bolt

The stresses in a sheet with an interference-fit bolt have been calculated for two sheet-bolt interface conditions: a frictionless interface and a fixed (no-slip) interface. The stress distributions were calculated for various combinations of sheet and bolt moduli. The results show that for repeated loading the local stress range is significantly smaller if an interference bolt is used instead of a loosely fitting one. This reduction in local stress range is more pronounced when the ratio of bolt modulus to sheet modulus is large. The analysis also indicates that currently used standard values of interference cause yielding in the sheet.

Radiation heat transfer calculations for the uranium fuel-containment region of the nuclear light bulb engine.

Calculation results are reviewed of the radiant heat transfer characteristics in the fuel and buffer gas regions of a nuclear light bulb engine based on the transfer of energy by thermal radiation from gaseous uranium fuel in a neon vortex, through an internally cooled transparent wall, to seeded hydrogen propellant. The results indicate that the fraction of UV energy incident on the transparent walls increases with increasing power level. For the reference engine power level of 4600 megw, it is necessary to employ space radiators to reject the UV radiated energy absorbed by the transparent walls. This UV energy can be blocked by employing nitric oxide and oxygen seed gases in the fuel and buffer gas regions. However, this results in increased UV absorption in the buffer gas which also requires space radiators to reject the heat load.
