Kinetic Simulations of the Kruskal–Schwarzschild Instability in Accelerating Striped Outflows: Dynamics and Energy Dissipation

Astrophysical relativistic outflows are launched as Poynting-flux dominated, yet the mechanism governing efficient magnetic dissipation, which powers the observed emission, is still poorly understood. We study magnetic energy dissipation in relativistic "striped" jets, which host current sheets separating magnetically dominated regions with opposite field polarity. The effective gravity force g in the rest frame of accelerating jets drives the Kruskal–Schwarzschild instability (KSI), a magnetic analog of the Rayleigh–Taylor instability. By means of 2D and 3D particle-in-cell simulations, we study the linear and nonlinear evolution of the KSI. The linear stage is well described by linear stability analysis. The nonlinear stages of the KSI generate thin (skin-depth-thick) current layers, with length comparable to the dominant KSI wavelength. There, the relativistic drift-kink mode and the tearing mode drive efficient magnetic dissipation. The dissipation rate can be cast as an increase in the effective width Δ eff of the dissipative region, which follows dΔ eff /dt ≃ 0.05 $\sqrt{Δ_{eff} g}$. Our results have important implications for the location of the dissipation region in gamma-ray burst and active galactic nuclei jets.

Performance of a Printed Bimetallic (Stainless Steel and Bronze) Engine Head Operating under Stoichiometric and Lean Spark Ignited (SI) Combustion of Natural Gas

Additive manufacturing was used to fabricate a head for an automotive-scale single-cylinder engine operating on natural gas. The head was consisted of a bimetallic composition of stainless steel and bronze. The engine performance using the bimetallic head was compared against the stock cast iron head. The heads were tested at two speeds (1200 and 1800 rpm), two brake mean effective pressures (6 and 10 bar), and two equivalence ratios (0.7 and 1.0). The bimetallic head showed good durability over the test and produced equivalent efficiencies, exhaust temperatures, and heat rejection to the coolant to the stock head. Higher combustion temperatures and advanced combustion phasing resulted from use with the bimetallic head. The implication is that with optimization of the valve timing, an efficiency benefit may be realized with the bimetallic head.

Preparation of Mechanically Robust, Macroscopic Low-Density Gold Foams by Highly Efficient Electroless Gold Plating

Mechanically robust, macroscopic-sized low-density gold foams with unique morphology of hollow gold shells were prepared by the synthesis of gold-coated polystyrene coreshell particles followed by thermal removal of the polymer core. Here, we reported a simple, highly efficient electroless gold plating procedure to form ultrathin, conformal gold coatings on the surface of polystyrene particles. A modified, scalable casting approach to form uniform, large monoliths (up to 1 cm diameter) and a baking condition to minimize undesirable densification of final foams were also developed. To demonstrate the mechanical stability and integrity of the Au foams, a representative monolithic sample (~0.9 g/ cm3 ) was successfully cut and shaped into a gold foam “washer” by a series of precision machining and processing. A depth-sensing indentation test (nanoindentation) as well as characterizations on other useful properties such as surface areas and electrical conductivity of the Au foams were carried out to understand the mechanical behavior and potential applicability.

PM-HIP Mechanical Data Archive

This is the mechanical testing data archive from a neutron irradiation campaign of nuclear structural alloys fabricated by powder metallurgy with hot isostatic pressing (PM-HIP). Data in this archive include uniaxial tensile testing data, fractography of selected tensile bars, and nanoindentation. The irradiation campaign was designed to facilitate a direct comparison of PM-HIP to conventional casting or forging. Five common nuclear structural alloys were included in the campaign: 316L stainless steel, SA508 pressure vessel steel, Grade 91 ferritic steel, and Ni-base alloys 625 and 690. Irradiations were carried out in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to target doses of 1 and 3 displacements per atom (dpa) at target temperatures of 300ºC and 400ºC through the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) project 15-8242.
