The purpose of this paper is to discuss how the Climate and Forecast (CF) Metadata Conventions and netCDF standard have influenced the recommendations and guidance provided to producers of data products based on NASA’s Earth observations. It has been long-recognized that interoperable datasets and use of standards and conventions are beneficial to the users of these datasets, especially those who make use of multiple datasets for their research and applications. The Dataset Interoperability Working Group (DIWG), one of NASA’s Earth Science Data System Working Groups (ESDSWGs), was established in 2013, and has developed and published many recommendations. The Data Product Development Guide (DPDG) Working Group, established in 2018 as another of the ESDSWGs, has published a DPDG for Data Producers and a Quick Start Guide, incorporating guidance from many sources, including the recommendations from the DIWG. The DPDG includes recommendations regarding data formats (prominently netCDF-4) and metadata based primarily on the CF Metadata Conventions and the Attribute Convention for Data Discovery (ACDD). In early 2023, it was decided that the Resource Center for Data Producers (RCDP) Working Group be established as another ESDSWG, with the goals of providing all the information relevant and helpful for data producers via an easily accessible website, and of recommending how the DPDG and QSG could be maintained as living documents, given the rapidly changing technologies, and the need for incorporating the experience and feedback from the users of these documents.
Configurable Control Rooms provide the ability to rapidly change capabilities from mission to mission and customer to customer. Future missions will likely not have the 24/7/365 need for a dedicated mission support room, and CCR could easily be adapted for continuous support if needed. CCRs offer physical, centralized locations for teams to support, and the HOSC provides a secure, reliable facility with constant monitoring by network specialists. Institutions and payload teams can cost save by utilizing a CCR at MSFC eliminating the need to assemble an entire custom control room at their location. This new paradigm in flight operations can ease the creation of any mission from a cubesat to a New Frontiers or Flagship program and anything in between.

This presentation is a set of charts presented at the 2024 AIAA ASCEND conference. This report is the result of an activity sponsored by Dr. Wanda Peters, Deputy Associate Administrator of Programs, who tasked Florence Tan and Carolyn Mercer with gathering insights from SmallSat/ Class D missions that could be extrapolated to enhance Class A-C missions.
This is a keynote presentation for a workshop highlighting the use of remote sensing and modeling products derived with NASA missions and Earth system modeling for solar energy system development. We broadly introduce NASA's fleet of satellite producing publicly available data products that would be useful for the information needed solar energy development. We also introduce the work in Earth system science modeling that provides additional global gridded data products that are also relevant. We identify that one issue is obtaining and using this data is the level of expertise needed to find it. NASA has developed a new Earth Action program to address this gap and bring the data closer to the user. Now under the Energy Resources element, the NASA LaRC's POWER (Prediction of Worldwide Renewable Energy) project has developed a web services platform that provides key information needed for solar energy development as analysis-ready. This means that the data for particular locations are immediately useful for help provide the information needed by engineers and architects to plan for solar systems. Thus, the presentation shows why NASA products would be relevant and then shows examples of finding the needed data through the POWER web portal.
