pymatgen-analysis-defects: A Python package for analyzing point defects in crystalline materials

Point defects can often determine the properties of semiconductor and optoelectronic materials. Due to the large simulation cell and the higher-cost density functionals required for defect simulations, the computational cost of defect calculations is often orders of magnitude higher than that of bulk calculations. As such, managing and curating the results of the defect calculations generated by a single user has the potential to save a significant amount of computational resources. Moreover, eventually building a high-quality, persistent defects database will significantly reduce the computational cost of defect calculations for the entire community.

Mechanistic Approach to Analyzing and Improving Unconventional Hydrocarbon Production [Slides]

DOE research is developing the physical basis and tools needed to manage pressure effectively to increase recovery efficiency. By coupling fast, accurate physics with machine learning, DOE is producing science-based platforms any operator can use. DOE’s research portfolio is targeting hydrocarbon transport at multiple scales, with the goal of increasing recovery efficiency. DOE’s research has led to new, fast & accurate platforms for predicting gas production from fractured shales. Using data from the MSEEL-I site to calibrate our physics-based model, we have early results on pressure management. We have shown that both mechanical and chemical processes in the matrix can negatively impact production.

Analyzing Black Hole X-Rays with Simulations

We generate synthetic X-ray spectra of black holes from large-scale 3D GRMHD simulations performed on HPC machines. Here are a sampling of model spectra, characterized by the parameters indicated in the diagram below. The dashed red lines show power law fits to the parts of the spectrum observed by the X-ray telescope NuSTAR. How well these model spectra compare to real data helps us to characterize the physical realism of the underlying simulation techniques.

Analyzing Custom Proof Masses and Quantum Limits of a Manufacturable Cavity Optical Levitation Solution

This report details results of a one-year LDRD to understand the dynamics, figures of merit, and fabrication possibilities for levitating a micro-scale, disk-shaped dielectric in an optical field. Important metrics are the stability, positional uncertainty, and required optical power to maintain levitation. Much of the results are contained in a publication written by our academic alliance collaborators. Initial structures were grown at Sandia labs and a test fabrication flow was executed. Owing to our strength in VCSEL lasers, we were particularly interested in calculations and fabrication flows that could be compatible with a VCSEL light source.

Coulomb phase corrections to the transverse analyzing power AN(t) in high energy forward proton-proton scattering

Study of the polarized proton-proton elastic scattering in the Coulomb Nuclear interference region allows one to measure forward hadronic spin-flip amplitude including the phase. However, in a precision experimental data analysis, a phase shift correction δC due to the long distance Coulomb interaction should be taken into account. For the unpolarized scattering, δC is commonly considered as well established. Here, we evaluate the Coulomb phase shifts for the spin-flip electromagnetic and hadronic amplitudes. The difference between spin-flip and non-flip Coulomb phase shifts was found to be negligible for current experimental accuracy in the high energy transverse spin elastic pp measurements. However, effective alteration of the hadronic spin-flip amplitude by the long distance electromagnetic corrections can be noticeable.

Fielding and analyzing performance of a prototype high voltage output gas switch for Saturn

Timing spread between the thirty-six Saturn modules affects peak electrical power delivered to the Bremsstrahlung diode and can affect vacuum power flow and impedance behavior of the load. To reduce the module spread, a new megavolt gas-insulated closing switch was developed employing design techniques developed for the Z-machine laser triggered switches while retaining Saturn’s simpler electrical triggering. Two modules were temporarily outfitted with the new switches and used separately into local resistive loads (instead of the usual Saturn electron beam load). A reliable operating point and switch time jitter at that point were the goals of the experiments. The target switch reliability is less than one pre-fire in one thousand switch-shots, and a timing standard deviation of 4 nanoseconds. The switches were able to meet both requirements but the number of tests at the chosen point are limited.

Analyzing Mechanical integrity of Microwave resonant Cavity flowmeter

The microwave resonant cavity flow sensor has been proposed to address the difficulties of measuring high-temperature molten salt flow in reactor vessels. The flow sensor consists of a metallic cylindrical cavity coupled to a microwave waveguide. The cylindrical cavity has one of the flat surfaces thin enough to undergo microscopic deflection due to dynamic pressure of the exerted by the flowing fluid. Deflection of the membrane causes a shift in the microwave resonant frequency. Fluid velocity can be estimated from the calibration curve. The objective of this report is to investigate mechanical integrity of the flowmeter’s membrane. The membrane is a thin stainless-steel circular plate with a clamped edge, subjected to uniform load. By calculating the stress on the plate due to deflection and, comparing the stress to the material ultimate tensile strength and yield strength, it can be estimated if the plate will fail. If the maximum stress is greater than the yield strength, the plate will undergo plastic deformation, and the sensor will be disabled. A stress greater than the ultimate tensile strength will cause the plate to fracture. The stress on the plate was calculated with an analytic closed form solution model, and with COMSOL Structural Mechanics Module which does not involve any approximations. Stresses in both the analytic model and COMSOL numerical model were calculated for stainless steel 316 thin circular plates under room temperature conditions, where the fluid is water. The diameter of the circular plate is approximately one inch, and thickness is 10mil. Fluid flow velocity is in the range from 0.5m/s to 1m/s. The results from the two models are similar. Both the analytic model and COMSOL model showed that maximum stresses on the plate, which are at the radial boundary of the plate, are three orders of magnitude smaller than the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. This indicates that the sensor is at a low risk of mechanical failure.

GIS-Based Graphical User Interface Tools for Analyzing Solar Thermal Desalination Systems & High-Potential Implementation

This project developed a user-friendly, open-source, software that enables a comparative evaluation of solar thermal desalination technology options and employs geospatial data layers to identify regions of high-potential for solar thermal desalination. This was accomplished by integrating solar models with desalination models and enhancing their utility by providing GIS-based data inputs. The developed Solar Energy Desalination Analysis Tool (SEDAT) enables techno-economical evaluation of desalination technologies and selection of regions with the highest potential for using solar energy to power desalination plants. It simplifies the planning, design, and valuation of solar thermal and solar hybrid desalination systems in the U.S. and worldwide. SEDAT uses Dash for integrating various layers of large volumes of GIS data with Python-based models of solar energy generation and desalination technologies. It derives time-series of energy generation and water production, with details of plant performance and suggestions for improving the solar-desalination coupling. It is a one of-a-kind tool of analysis representing a definitive advancement in the state-of-the-art. Of solar desalination modeling This report summarizes the various phases of the tool’s development, and presents examples of the results.

Securing Inverter Communication: Proactive Intrusion Detection and Mitigation System to Tap, Analyze, and Act

The electric grid has undergone rapid, revolutionary changes in recent years; from the addition of advanced smart technologies to the growing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) to increased interconnectivity and communications. However, these added communications, access interfaces, and third-party software to enable autonomous control schemes and interconnectivity also expand the attack surface of the grid. To address the gap of DER cybersecurity and secure the grid-edge to motivate a holistic, defense-in-depth approach, a proactive intrusion detection and mitigation system (PIDMS) device was developed to secure PV smart inverter communications. The PIDMS was developed as a distributed, flexible bump-in-the-wire (BITW) solution for protecting PV smart inverter communications. Both cyber (network traffic) and physical (power system measurements) are processed using network intrusion monitoring tools and custom machinelearning algorithms for deep packet analysis and cyber-physical event correlation. The PIDMS not only detects abnormal events but also deploys mitigations to limit or eliminate system impact; the PIDMS communicates with peer PIDMSs at different locations using the MQTT protocol for increased situational awareness and alerting. The details of the PIDMS methodology and prototype development are detailed in this report as well as the evaluation results within a cyber-physical emulation environment and subsequent industry feedback.

LANL Activities on Mechanistic Approach to Analyzing and Improving Unconventional Hydrocarbon Production

Hydrocarbon production from shale reservoirs is inherently inefficient and challenging since these are low permeability plays. In addition, there is a limited understanding of the fundamentals and the controlling mechanisms, further complicating how to optimize these plays. Herein, we summarize our experimental and computational efforts fully and partially supported by the fundamental shale portfolio to reveal unconventional shale fundamentals and devise development strategies to enhance extraction efficiency with a minimal environmental footprint. Integrating these fundamentals with machine learning, we outline a pathway to improve the predictive power of our models, which enhances the forecast quality of production, thereby improving the economics of operations in unconventional reservoirs. For instance, we have developed science informed workflows and platforms for optimizing pressure-drawdown at a site, which allow operators to make reservoir-management decisions that optimize recovery in consideration of future production. Recently, our work relies on the hybridization of physics-based prediction and machine learning, whereby accurate synthetic data (combined with available site data) can enable the application of machine learning methods for rapid forecasting and optimization. Consequently, the workflow and platform are readily extendable to operations at other sites, plays, and basins.
