Nonlinear multivariable design by total synthesis

The Nominal Design Problem (NDP) is extended to nonlinear cases, and a new case study of robust feedback synthesis for gas turbine control design is presented. The discussion of NDP extends and builds on earlier Total Synthesis Problem theory and ideas. Some mathematical preliminaries are given in which a bijection from a set S onto a set T is considered, with T admitting the structure of an F-vector space. NDP is then discussed for a nonlinear plant, and nonlinear nominal design is defined and characterized. The design of local controllers for a turbojet and the scheduling of these controls into a global control are addressed.

Implicit total variation diminishing (TVD) schemes for steady-state calculations

The application of a new implicit unconditionally stable high resolution total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme to steady state calculations. It is a member of a one parameter family of explicit and implicit second order accurate schemes developed by Harten for the computation of weak solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws. This scheme is guaranteed not to generate spurious oscillations for a nonlinear scalar equation and a constant coefficient system. Numerical experiments show that this scheme not only has a rapid convergence rate, but also generates a highly resolved approximation to the steady state solution. A detailed implementation of the implicit scheme for the one and two dimensional compressible inviscid equations of gas dynamics is presented. Some numerical computations of one and two dimensional fluid flows containing shocks demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of this new scheme. Previously announced in STAR as N83-23085

The importance of the space station as an element of the total Space System architecture

The paper describes the role of the Space Station in the ensemble of the space-based infrastructure necessary for achieving permanent manned presence in space. The major elements of the architecture are identified, functionally interrelated and discussed in terms of their evolutionary development as an extension of current STS capabilities. It is shown that they require a logical succession of flight R&D experiments and demonstrations using the Space Shuttle and the Space Station as test beds. The paper describes the interrelationships between the Space Station and the various major infrastructure elements and shows that the latter are indispensable for full operational utilization of the former. Only the total ensemble of the architecture provide all the necessary prerequisites for permanent manned presence in space.

A total life prediction model for stress concentration sites

Fatigue crack growth tests were performed on center crack panels and radial crack hole samples. The data were reduced and correlated with the elastic parameter K taking into account finite width and corner crack corrections. The anomalous behavior normally associated with short cracks was not observed. Total life estimates for notches were made by coupling an initiation life estimate with a propagation life estimate.

Regional correlation between TOMS total ozone from NIMBUS-7 satellite and geopotential height from the GLAS analysis

In order to study the relation between zone and the atmospheric circulation on a global scale the global correlation has been computed between TOMS total ozone measurements from NIMBUS-7 satellite and collocated geopotential heights analysis at all mandatory pressure levels between 1000-50 mb. The heights are obtained from the 4 deg x 5 deg GLAS analysis that uses both conventional (rawinsonde) and the operational TIROS-N satellite soundings but no ozone data. Zonal averages have been substracted to eliminate the correlation due merely to latitudinal dependence, and emphasize the correlation associated with synoptic features. Tables are presented with correlation coefficients for the four synoptic times covering the Pacific Ocean, Asia, Europe and the Atlantic Ocean, and United States regions. These coverages are approximate since NIMBUS-7 does not observe exactly the same region each day.

Frequencies, amplitudes and linewidths of solar oscillations from total irradiance observations

Ten months of solar total irradiance data from the Solar Maximum Mission satellite have generated accurate frequencies, amplitudes and linewidths for individual about 5-min solar p-mode oscillations of low degree. The modes can be described as independent and chaotically excited oscillators, and provide no evidence for the fine structure taken to imply rapid internal rotation of the sun.

Theoretical quasar emission-line profiles. II - Effects of source function vibration and total thickness

By calculating the actual limb brightening functions for the emission-line clouds, rather than using the approximation that all observed radiation originates from the same part of the growth curve, the present consideration of radiation transfer effects in the broad emission line regions of quasars and Seyfert 1 galaxies allows the study of clouds whose total optical thickness is intermediate between the limiting cases of an optically thin Doppler core and Voigt wing emissions. The ability to predict minor differences in observed line profiles in a given object in terms of radiative transfer effects leads to the proposal of a test which may be able to distinguish between radial and orbital geometries. The test involves the difference in width between emission lines from the same family having different optical depth scales.

Satellite remote sensing of total dry matter production in the Senegalese Sahel

Nine predominantly cloud-free NOAA-7 advanced very high resolution radiometer images were obtained during a three-month period during the 1981 rainy season in the Sahel of Senegal. The 0.55-0.68- and 0.725-1.10-micron channels were used to form the normalized difference green leaf density vegetation index and the 11.5-12.5-micron channel was used as a cloud mask for each of the nine images. Changes in the normalized difference values among the various dates were closely associated with precipitation events. Six of the images spanning an 8-week period were used to generate a cumulative integrated index. Ground biomas samplings in the 30,000 sq km study area were used to assign total dry biomass classes to the cumulative index.

Mass spectrometric determination of partial and total electron impact ionization cross sections of SO2 from threshold up to 200 eV

The partial and total ionization cross section for the formation of O(+), S(+), SO(+) and SO2(+) from the impact ionization of SO2 are reported, extending the electron impact energies to 200 eV. The relative flow technique is used to determine the cross section values. The threshold potentials for the products are 23.5 eV for O(+), 16.5 eV for S(+), 16.5 eV for SO(+), and 12.5 eV for SO2(+). Good agreement with the literature is found for SO(+) and SO2(+).

Epsilon Aurigae in eclipse. I - Ultraviolet spectroscopy during ingress and totality

Epsilon Aurigae is a long-period eclipsing system containing a F0 Ia supergiant and an unseen slightly less-massive secondary. A primary eclipse began in mid-1982 with the unseen companion passing in front of the supergiant. Low-resolution ultraviolet (IUE) spectra of Epsilon Aur in 1982 and early 1983 provide eclipse light curves extending into the total phase of the current eclipse. The depth of eclipse from 3000 A to 1700 A is slightly deeper than at visual wavelengths (0.8 m). The depth declines for wavelengths less than 1700 A and is just 0.2 m at wavelengths less than 1300 A. The disappearance of the eclipse at wavelengths less than 1300 A may be attributed to a hot star or spot within the disk-shaped secondary. A main-sequence star of spectral type B0 accounts for the observations. However, an alternative site of the ultraviolet excess may be the primary's upper photosphere or chromosphere.

The corona near the time of the 1983 June 11 total solar eclipse

Observations are presented of the corona during the June 11, 1983 total solar eclipse, together with preliminary results of a coordinated observing program conducted to investigate the relationship between the corona and the lower parts of the solar atmosphere. Synoptic observations of the white light corona and disk in H-alpha are compared with the eclipse image, together with the inferred longitudinal component of the photospheric magnetic field measured using the magnetically sensitive Fe line at 6303 A. Using these data, an interpretation of the global three-dimensional coronal structure is attempted; showing that the eclipse image contains bright features which are far from the plane of the sky, and that it is dominated by streamers over polar filament neutral lines.

Measurement of spine and total body mineral by dual-photon absorptiometry

The use of Gd-153 dual-photon absorptiometry at 43 and 100 keV to measure individual-bone and total-body bone minerals is discussed in a survey of recent studies on humans, phantoms, and monkeys. Precision errors of as low as 1 percent have been achieved in vivo, suggesting the use of sequential measurements in studies of immobilization and space-flight effects.

Reliability considerations for the total strain range version of strainrange partitioning

A proposed total strainrange version of strainrange partitioning (SRP) to enhance the manner in which SRP is applied to life prediction is considered with emphasis on how advanced reliability technology can be applied to perform risk analysis and to derive safety check expressions. Uncertainties existing in the design factors associated with life prediction of a component which experiences the combined effects of creep and fatigue can be identified. Examples illustrate how reliability analyses of such a component can be performed when all design factors in the SRP model are random variables reflecting these uncertainties. The Rackwitz-Fiessler and Wu algorithms are used and estimates of the safety index and the probablity of failure are demonstrated for a SRP problem. Methods of analysis of creep-fatigue data with emphasis on procedures for producing synoptic statistics are presented. An attempt to demonstrate the importance of the contribution of the uncertainties associated with small sample sizes (fatique data) to risk estimates is discussed. The procedure for deriving a safety check expression for possible use in a design criteria document is presented.

The structure of galactic HI in directions of low total column density

A detailed 21 cm study of areas of that have the smallest known amount of HI in the northern sky was performed. These observations were corrected for stray radiation. The region of main interest, around alpha = 10(h)45(m), delta = 57 deg 20', has a minimium N(HI) of 4.5 x 10 to the 19th power/sq cm. Spectra taken at 21' resolution over a field 4 x 3 deg in this direction show up to four HI line components. Two, near 0 and -50 km/s, are ubiquitous. There is also a narrow component at -10 km/s attributable to a diffuse cloud covering half of the field, and scattered patches of HI at v -100 km/s. the low and intermediate velocity components have a broad line width and are so smoothly distributed across the region that it is unlikely that they contain significant unresolved angular structure. Eight other low column density directions were also observed. Their spectra typically have several components, but the total column density is always 7 x 10 to the 19th power/sq cm and changes smoothly along a 2 deg strip. Half of the directions show narrow lines arising from weak diffuse HI clouds that contain 0.5 to 3.0 x 10 to the 19th power/sq cm.

Total integrated dose testing of solid-state scientific CD4011, CD4013, and CD4060 devices by irradiation with CO-60 gamma rays

The total integrated dose response of three CMOS devices manufactured by Solid State Scientific has been measured using CO-60 gamma rays. Key parameter measurements were made and compared for each device type. The data show that the CD4011, CD4013, and CD4060 produced by this manufacturers should not be used in any environments where radiation levels might exceed 1,000 rad(Si).

Total dose effects in the 54HC family of microcircuits

Motorola and National Semiconductor 54HC00 and 54HC74 microcircuits were evaluated using CO-60 to determine their total dose radiation hardness. The devices were found to be radiation soft failing parametrically between 5 and 10 K rads and functionally between 20 and 40 K rads. The failures were bias dependent, relatively insensitive to dose rate, and only annealed moderately when left unbiased at room temperature.

Total electron scattering cross sections. I - He, Ne, Ar, Xe

The apparatus and experimental procedures used to obtain total electron scattering cross sections are described, and results are presented for He, Ne, Ar and Xe in the 4-300 eV incident energy range, together with statistical errors. The results are generally found to be in good agreement with previous data except at low impact energies. Serious discrepancies remain in Xe below 20 eV impact energy.

Cerenkov detectors for cosmic ray telescopes employing the Cerenkov x total energy technique of mass identification

Considerable progress has been made regarding the evolution of the 'Cerenkov x total energy technique' for mass identification of cosmic ray nuclei since the introduction of telescopes employing this technique by Webber et al. (1973). Thus, significant improvements in mass resolution have been made. These improvements are mainly related to the resolution of the Cerenkov counter. The present investigation is, therefore, concerned with the properties of various types of Cerenkov detectors. In addition, a description is provided of the characteristics of a large area (approximately 0.5 sq m-ster) cosmic ray isotope telescope, which is being developed for use on balloons or spacecraft.
