Dirac spectral density in N f = 2 + 1 QCD at T = 230 MeV

We compute the renormalized Dirac spectral density in N f = 2 + 1 QCD at physical quark masses, temperature T = 230 MeV , and system size L s = 3.4 fm . To that end, we perform a pointwise continuum limit of the staggered density in lattice QCD with staggered quarks. We find, for the first time, that a clear infrared structure (IR peak) emerges in the density of the Dirac operator describing dynamical quarks. We also provide numerical evidence that a component of this peak, which becomes dominant in the thermodynamic limit, is due to a nontrivial accumulation of near-zero modes. Features of this structure are consistent with those previously attributed to the recently proposed IR phase of thermal QCD. Our results (i) provide the only complete first-principles evidence that these IR features exist and are physical, (ii) improve the upper bound for IR phase transition temperature T IR so that the new window is 200 < T IR < 230 MeV , and (iii) are consistent with the nonrestoration of anomalous U A ( 1 ) symmetry (chiral limit) below T = 230 MeV . Bulk high-temperature superconductivity in pressurized tetragonal La 2 PrNi 2 O 7

The Ruddlesden–Popper (R–P) bilayer nickelate, La 3 Ni 2 O 7 , was recently found to show signatures of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) at pressures above 14 GPa . Subsequent investigations achieved zero resistance in single-crystalline and polycrystalline samples under hydrostatic pressure conditions. Yet, obviousdiamagnetic signals, the other hallmark of superconductors, are still lacking owing to the flamentary nature with low superconducting volume fraction. The presence of a new 1313 polymorph and competing R–P phases obscured proper identification of the phase for HTSC. Thus, achieving bulk HTSC and identifying the phase at play are the most prominent tasks. Here we address these issues in the praseodymium (Pr)-doped La 2 PrNi 2 O 7 polycrystalline samples. We find that substitutions of Pr for La efectively inhibit the intergrowth of diferent R–P phases, resulting in a nearly pure bilayer structure. For La 2 PrNi 2 O 7 , pressure-induced orthorhombic to tetragonalstructural transition takes place at P c ≈ 11 GPa, above which HTSC emerges gradually on further compression. The superconducting transition temperatures at 18–20 GPa reach $T$ $^{onset}_{c}$ = $82.5$ $K$ and $T$ $^{zero}_{c}$ = $60$ $K$, which are the highest values, to our knowledge, among known nickelate superconductors. Importantly, bulk HTSC was testified by detecting clear diamagnetic signals below about 75 K with appreciable superconducting shielding volume fractions at a pressure of above 15 GPa. Further, our results not only resolve the existing controversies but also provide directions for exploring bulk HTSC in the bilayer nickelates.

Reducing dielectric loss and enhancing electrical insulation for multilayer polymer films by nanoconfined ion transport under high poling electric fields

High temperature polar polymers have demonstrated potential for good thermal stability and high dielectric constant at the same time. However, polarization of contaminated impurity ions in polar polymers, even at the ppm level, can significantly increase the dielectric loss at high temperature and low frequencies. One effective strategy to mitigate this problem is to multilayer them with a high temperature nonpolar dielectric polymer to confine impurity ion transport at the nanometer scale. In this study, confined ion transport in high temperature polycarbonate (HTPC)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) multilayer films under high AC electric fields was studied using a direct analytical simulation method. Different from the ion transport under low fields, the ion diffusion model failed to describe the ion transport under high electric fields. An exponential ion distribution profile, which was observed for the DC poling situation, was employed to implement the direct analytical simulation. Confined impurity ion transport under high AC fields was quantitatively understood. As the AC field increased, the mobile ion concentration decreased whereas the diffusion coefficient increased. The decrease of mobile ion concentration was explained by the blockage of impurity ions by the HTPC layers. This knowledge helped in the determination of optimal conditions to polarize impurity ions from the PVDF layers into the HTPC layers. After cooling below the glass transition temperature of HTPC, polarized impurity ions were locked inside the HTPC layers. As a result, increased discharge efficiency and enhanced electrical insulation (i.e., increased dielectric breakdown strength) were achieved for the polarized multilayer films.

Universal temperature dependence of the London penetration depth in κ - ( ET ) 2 X superconductors

High-precision radio-frequency magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed on single crystals of fully deuterated $κ-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]\,Br$, hereafter designated as $κ-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]\,Br$. This material phase separates into superconducting and antiferromagnetic regions, the degree of which depends strongly upon the cooling rate. Here, we show that the screening fraction $η_{sc}$ varies logarithmically with the cooling rate over nearly five decades. The average size of superconducting regions is estimated to vary from 5 to $40μm$, depending upon cooling rate, consistent with previous infrared microscopy measurements. In the region $T≲T_c/3$, the effective magnetic penetration depth exhibits power-law behavior $λ(T)-λ(0)~T^n$ with $n=1.6$, independent of the cooling rate. Changes in cooling rate and the consequent phase separation evidently do not introduce the kind of disorder that would alter the exponent $n$ in a $d$-wave superconductor. The exponent remains close to $n=$ 1.5, reported in single crystals of $κ-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]\,Br$ and $κ-(ET)_2Cu(NCS)_2$ [A. Carrington et al., Phys. Rev. Lett 83, 4172 (1999)]. The transition temperature fell linearly with $1-η_{sc}$. Measurements were also made on $κ-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]\,Cl$ of normal isotopic abundance in which a very small amount of superconducting phase $η_{sc}≈10^{-4}$ developed, presumably through the strain-induced sample mounting. This material showed a power-law exponent of $n=1.64$, independent of the cooling rate.

Simulation of polymerization induced phase separation in model thermosets

Polymerization induced phase separation (PIPS) in a three component thermoset is studied using molecular dynamics simulations of a new coarse-grained thermoset model. The system includes two crosslinker molecules, which differ in their glass transition temperatures (T g ) and chain length and thus have the potential for phase separation. Here, one crosslinker has a high T g corresponding to a rubbery behavior, and simulations were performed for a short length (4 beads) and a long length (33 beads). The resin and other crosslinker have low T g . A coarse-grained model is developed with these features and with interaction parameters determined so that for either rubbery crosslinker length, the system is in the liquid state at the cure temperature. For sufficiently slow reaction rates, the long rubbery molecule exhibits PIPS into a bicontinuous array of nanoscale domains, but the short one does not, reproducing recent experimental results. The simulations demonstrate that the reaction rates must be slow enough to allow diffusion to yield phase separation. Particularly, the reaction rate corresponding to the secondary amine must be very slow, else the structure of crosslinked clusters and the substantially increased diffusion time will prevent PIPS.

Spectrum of Dirac eigenvalues across QCD chiral transition

Here, we show that the universal scaling properties of the chiral phase transition in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at the macroscale are encoded in the microscopic energy levels of the quarks in the background of gluon fields, defined as eigenvalues of the Dirac operator. We introduce a novel relation between the cumulants of the chiral condensate, and the correlations among the energy levels of quarks, i.e., the eigenspectra of the massless QCD Dirac operator. This relation elucidates how the fluctuations of the chiral condensate arise from the correlations within the infrared part of the energy spectra of quarks, and naturally leads to a generalization of the Banks-Casher relation for the cumulants of the chiral condensate. Then, through (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD calculations using HISQ action with varying light quark masses around the chiral phase transition temperature, we demonstrate that the correlations among the infrared part of the Dirac eigenvalue spectra exhibit same universal scaling behaviors as expected of the cumulants of the chiral condensate. We find that these universal scaling behaviors extend up to the physical values of the up and down quark masses.

Screening of high temperature adhesives for large area bonding

High temperature-resistant adhesive systems were screened for processability, mechanical and physical properties, operational capability at 589 K (600 F), and the ability to produce large area bonds of high quality in fabricating Space Shuttle components. The adhesives consisted primarily of polyimide systems, including FM34B-18, NR-150B2 (DuPont), PMR-15, LARC-13, LARC-160, Thermid 600, and AI-1130L (AMOCA). The processing studies included preparation of polyimide resins, fabrication of film adhesives, development of lay-up and cure procedures, fabrication of honeycomb sandwich panels, and fabrication of mid-plane bonded panels in joints up to 30.5 cm (12 in.) wide. The screening program included tests for tack and drape properties, reticulation and filleting characteristics, ability to produce void-free or low porosity bonds in mid-plane bonded panels, out-time stability, lap shear strength, climbing drum peel strength, and glass transition temperature (Tg). This paper describes the processing methods developed and the test results.

The 700 F properties of autoclave cured PMR-2 composites

Studies were conducted to develop autoclave processing parameters for graphite reinforced PMR-2 resin composite materials intended for use in applications at temperatures up to 371 degrees (700 F). The effect of resin composition on autoclaveability was investigated. The effect of various graphite fibers and resin composition on 343 C (650 F) and 371 C (700 F) thermo-oxidative stability and mechanical properties was also investigated. The results of the processing studies show that PMR-2 resin composites can be easily fabricated under autoclave conditions. Autoclaved laminates exposed to 1 atm of air at 343 C (650 F) and 371 C (700 F) exhibited less than 5 percent weight loss after 750 hr exposure to 650 F air and 8 percent weight loss during exposure to 700 F air for 500 hr. After 500 hr exposure, autoclaved laminates exhibited greater than 90 percent retention of initial 650 and 700 F flexural and interlaminar shear strengths. The effect of resin formulated molecular weight and postcure conditions on laminate glass transition temperature is also discussed.

Theoretical Investigations of Anharmonic Effects and Phonon Transport in the Cubic Phase of Crystalline Perovskite CsPbCl 3

The role of anharmonic effects on lattice dynamics and thermal transport has been investigated in the cubic phase of the CsPbCl 3 perovskite. Limitations of the harmonic approximation, which lead to phonon instabilities in the Brillouin zone, were addressed based on self-consistent phonon theory in combination with first-principles calculations and by incorporation of frequency renormalization effects from bubble and loop diagrams. This theoretical approach demonstrates significant improvements compared to results obtained using a self-consistent phonon dynamic matrix. Both the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition temperature as well as the predicted lattice thermal conductivity values show good agreement with selected sets of available experimental data. In conclusion, the accuracy of the predicted thermal conductivity data is also tested against systems significantly larger than those allowed by quantum calculations, by using molecular dynamic simulations with machine-learning force fields.

Effects of Oxygen Modification on the Structural and Magnetic Properties of Highly Epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films

Abstract La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 , a strong semi-metallic ferromagnet having robust spin polarization and magnetic transition temperature ( T C ) well above 300 K, has attracted significant attention as a possible candidate for a wide range of memory, spintronic, and multifunctional devices. Since varying the oxygen partial pressure during growth is likely to change the structural and other physical functionalities of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) films, here we report detailed investigations on structure, along with magnetic behavior of LSMO films with same thickness (~30 nm) but synthesized at various oxygen partial pressures: 10, 30, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mTorr. The observation of only ( 00 l ) reflections without any secondary peaks in the XRD patterns confirms the high-quality synthesis of the above-mentioned films. Surface morphology of the films reveals that these films are very smooth with low roughness, the thin films synthesized at 150 mTorr having the lowest average roughness. The increasing of magnetic T C and sharpness of the magnetic phase transitions with increasing oxygen growth pressure suggests that by decreasing the oxygen growth pressure leads to oxygen deficiencies in grown films which induce oxygen inhomogeneity. Thin films grown at 150 mTorr exhibits the highest magnetization with T C = 340 K as these thin films possess the lowest roughness and might exhibit lowest oxygen vacancies and defects. Interpretation and significance of these results in the 30 nm LSMO thin films prepared at different oxygen growth pressures are also presented, along with the existence and growth pressure dependence of negative remanent magnetization (NRM) of the above-mentioned thin films.

Medium-Range Structural Order as the Driver of Activated Dynamics and Complexity Reduction in Glass-Forming Liquids

Here, we analyze in depth the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation theory of activated dynamics in metastable liquids to establish that the predicted inter-relationships between the alpha relaxation time, local cage and collective elastic barriers, dynamic localization length, and shear modulus are causally related within the theory to the medium range order (MRO) static correlation length. The latter grows exponentially with density for metastable hard sphere fluids and as a nonuniversal inverse power law with temperature for supercooled liquids under isobaric conditions. The physical origin of predicted connections between the alpha time and other metrics of cage order and the thermodynamic inverse dimensionless compressibility is fully established. It is discovered that although kinetic constraints from the real space first coordination shell are important for the alpha time, they are of secondary importance compared to the consequences of the more universal MRO correlations in both the modestly and deeply metastable regimes. This understanding sheds new light on the theoretical basis for, and prior successes of, the predictive mapping of chemically complex thermal liquids to effective hard sphere fluids based on matching their dimensionless compressibilities, a scheme we call “complexity reduction”. In essence, the latter is equivalent to the physical requirement that the thermal liquid MRO correlation equals that of its effective hard sphere analog. The mapping alone is shown to provide a remarkable level of quantitative predictive power for the glass transition temperature T g of 21 molecular and polymer liquids. Predictions for the chemically specific absolute magnitude and growth with cooling of the MRO correlation length are obtained and lie in the window of 2–6 nm at T g . Dynamic heterogeneity, elastic facilitation, and beyond pair structure issues are briefly discussed. Future opportunities to theoretically analyze the equilibrated deep glass regime are outlined.

Magnetic and structural properties of the solid solution CuAl 2(1–x) Ga 2x O 4

CuAl 2 O 4 is a ternary oxide spinel with Cu 2+ ions (s = 1/2) primarily populating the A-site diamond sublattice. The compound is reported to display evidence of spin glass behavior but possess a non-frozen magnetic ground state below the transition temperature. On the other hand, the spinel CuGa 2 O 4 displays spin glass behavior at ~ 2.5 K with Cu 2+ ions more readily tending to the B-site pyrochlore sublattice. Therefore, we investigate the magnetic and structural properties of the solid solution CuAl 2(1-x) Ga 2x O 4 examining the evolution of the magnetic behavior as Al 3+ is replaced with a much larger Ga 3+ ion. Our results show that the Cu 2+ ions tend to migrate from tetrahedral to octahedral sites as the Ga 3+ ion concentration increases, resulting in a concomitant change in the glassy magnetic properties of the solution. Results indicate glassy behavior for much of the solution with a general trend towards decreasing magnetic frustration as the Cu 2+ ion shifts to the B-site. However, the x = 0.1 and 0.2 members of the system do not show glassy behavior down to our measurement limit (1.9 K) suggesting a delayed spin glass transition. We suggest that these two members are additional candidates for investigation to access highly frustrated exotic quantum states.

Dimensional crossover and symmetry transformation of charge density waves in VSe 2

Collective phenomena in solids can be sensitive to the dimensionality of the system; a case of special interest is VSe 2 , which shows a (√7×√3) charge density wave (CDW) in the single layer with threefold symmetry in the normal phase spontaneously broken, in contrast to the (4×4) in-plane CDW in the bulk. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) from VSe 2 ranging from a single layer to the bulk reveals the evolution of the electronic structure including the Fermi surface contours and the CDW gap. At a thickness of two layers, the ARPES maps are already nearly bulklike, but the transition temperature T C for the (4×4) CDW is much higher than the bulk value of 110 K. These results can be understood as due to dimensional crossover of phonon instability driven by a competition of nesting vectors. Here, in this letter, we provide key insights into the CDW mechanisms and offer a perspective in the search and control of emergent phases in quantum materials.

Development of Processable PMR-Type Polymides with Star-Branched Structures

In the last two decades, high temperature polyimide matrix composites have found broad applications in aerospace structural components, due to their high specific modulus and high specific strength. As matrix resins, aromatic polyimides exhibit exceptional thermal stability and mechanical properties. However, their rodlike structures often result in poor solubility in most common organic solvents, as well as high melt temperature and melt viscosity, making them difficult to process. To overcome this difficulty, flexible linkages including O, SO2 or CH2 non coplanar biphenyl moieties, bulky lateral substituents, and crankshaft structures are often incorporated into the polymer backbones. Addition-curing of low molecular weight polyimides (resins) is another approach to improve processability. One of the most successfully developed materials has been PMR-15 (Polymerization of Monomer Reactants, molecular weight of 1500 g/mol), because of its good combination of thermal and mechanical properties and ease of processability. However, due to the high melt viscosity of PMR-type resins, use of more economical processing methods, such as resin transfer molding (RTM), is not possible. Recent research has focused on the incorporation of trifunctional monomers into addition-curing polyimides in an attempt to improve the processability of these polymers. The objective of this research is to use an aromatic triamine, 1,3,5 tris (4-aminophenoxy) benzene, to prepare new resin systems with starbranched structures. The glass transition temperatures (Tg's) and thermal oxidative stability TOS) of these polymers are compared to their linear counterparts and PMR-15.

Cooperative Ru(4 d )–Ho(4 f ) magnetic ordering and phase coexistence in the 6 H perovskite multiferroic Ba 3 HoRu 2 O 9

We report cooperative magnetic orderings in a 6H-perovskite multiferroic system, Ba 3 HoRu 2 O 9 , via comprehensive neutron powder diffraction measurements. This system undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at T N1 ~ 50 K with a propagation wave vector of K 1 = (0.5 0 0), a transition temperature much higher than the previously reported one at ~10 K (T N2 ). Both Ru and Ho-moments order simultaneously below T N1 , followed by spin-reorientations at lower temperatures, demonstrating strong Ru(4d)-Ho(4f) magnetic correlation. Below T N1 another magnetic phase with a propagation wave vector K 2 = (0.25 0.25 0) emerges and coexists with the one associated with K 1 , which is rarely observed and suggests complex magnetism due to phase competition in the magnetic ground state. Here, we argue that the exchange-striction arising from the up-up-down-down spin structure associated with K 2 below T N2 may be responsible for the small ferroelectric polarization reported previously in this compound.

Temperature effects of ion irradiation on the nanostructural features in ductile-phase-toughened tungsten composites

Ductile-phase toughened tungsten (DPT W) composites have emerged as promising candidates for load-bearing components behind the plasma-facing tungsten armor in fusion reactors due to their enhanced thermomechanical properties. This study focuses on a composite consisting of W particles embedded in a ductile NiFeW solution matrix, hot-rolled to a thickness reduction of 87% (87R DPT W). Sequential irradiations with Ni2+ and He+ ions were performed to identical doses and helium concentrations at room temperature (RT) and 1273 K. Irradiation at RT produced no discernible nanostructural features due to the immobility of mono-vacancies, whereas cavity formation was observed at 973 K. At 1273 K, the W phase exhibited larger cavities, reduced cavity number density, and lower volumetric swelling compared to 973 K. Notably, nanosized NiFeW precipitates formed within the W phase at 1273 K, a phenomenon absent at 973 K. A new phase of cubic (NiFe)6W6C was also observed at the interphase boundary. In contrast, the NiFeW matrix showed no nanostructural changes at 1273 K, likely due to cavity dissociation. Separate irradiations at 1273 K indicated that Ni2+ ions induced precipitate formation in the W phase, while He+ ions exclusively caused cavity formation. The microstructure of 87R DPT W irradiated at RT and subsequently annealed at 1273 K closely resembled that of material irradiated directly at 1273 K. Like oxide-dispersion-strengthened steels, the observed nanoparticle-embedded W can inhibit dislocation propagation, potentially delaying the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature. These findings highlight the potential of NiFeW nanoparticle-reinforced W composites as irradiation-resistant materials for fusion reactors.

Fabrication of Extruded Polyphenylsulfone – Boron Nitride Composite Tapes

Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) is a high-temperature, chemically resistant thermoplastic with high impact resistance that is often used in interior aircraft cabin components, medical devices, and membranes. The aforementioned properties have led to interest investigating PPSU’s compatibility with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) platelets as a thermally conductive, electrical composite insulator for high power-density electric machines. Preliminary trials extruding PPSU-hBN composite tapes showed promising dielectric properties and higher thermal conductivity as a function of hBN concentration compared to their neat analog. On the other hand, only few studies have reported on the extrusion process and resulting thermo-mechanical properties for PPSU and its composites made with chopped fiber reinforcement or fillers, none of which containing boron nitride filler. Prospects may exist for this type of material to be incorporated into extrusion-based additive manufacturing techniques to print other composites bearing unique properties useful for aerospace. Loading levels with up to approximately 23 wt% were achieved using micro-size BN platelets without observing any significant affects to PPSU’s glass-transition temperature. This work includes a description of the rheological properties of PPSU, the extrusion parameters for mixing and compounding the PPSU-hBN composite tapes, and the thermal and thermo-mechanical properties of PPSU-hBN composites.
