Precision X-ray telescopes on HEAO-C.

Discussion of precision X-ray telescopes which are to be mounted on HEAO-C aircraft designed to study the structure, energy spectra and transient behavior of specific X-ray objects by the scanning and mapping of the sky. The design features and performance characteristics of the three high-resolution X-ray telescopes and their optical systems are considered. Mission equipment specifications and systems diagrams are appended. The HEAO-C mission is planned for launching by the Shuttle in the late 70s, with the capability of pointing to within one arc minute of X-ray sources for long periods of time.

Large space telescope, phase A. Volume 1: Executive summary

The Phase A study of the Large Space Telescope (LST) is reported. The study defines an LST concept based on the broad mission guidelines provided by the Office of Space Science (OSS), the scientific requirements developed by OSS with the scientific community, and an understanding of long range NASA planning current at the time the study was performed. The LST is an unmanned astronomical observatory facility, consisting of an optical telescope assembly (OTA), scientific instrument package (SIP), and a support systems module (SSM). The report consists of five volumes. The report describes the constraints and trade off analyses that were performed to arrive at a reference design for each system and for the overall LST configuration. A low cost design approach was followed in the Phase A study. This resulted in the use of standard spacecraft hardware, the provision for maintenance at the black box level, growth potential in systems designs, and the sharing of shuttle maintenance flights with other payloads.

Uneven drive rates of the scanning telescope: Apollo 16 mission

An investigation was made into the cause or causes of uneven drive rates during operation of the Apollo 16 scanning telescope. It was suggested that such erratic behavior was caused by either changes in the characteristics noise level of the optics counter on the panels or the repositioning process by the computer or zero optics mode. Test results show the anomaly was not caused by either of the above suggestions, instead they were caused by a broken socket spring in the telescope harness. New harnesses will be manufactured for future flights.

Design and evaluation of an optical fine-pointing control system for telescopes utilizing a digital star sensor

One of the most significant problems associated with the development of large orbiting astronomical telescopes is that of maintaining the very precise pointing accuracy required. A proposed solution to this problem utilizes dual-level pointing control. The primary control system maintains the telescope structure attitude stabilized within the field of view to the desired accuracy. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of optically stabilizing the star images to the desired accuracy a regulating system has been designed and evaluated. The control system utilizes a digital star sensor and an optical star image motion compensator, both of which have been developed for this application. These components have been analyzed mathematically, analytical models have been developed, and hardware has been built and tested.

Optical tracking telescope compensation

In order to minimize the effects of parameter variations in the dynamics of an optical tracking telescope, a model referenced parameter adaptive control system is described that - in conjunction with more traditional forms of compensation - achieves a reduction of rms pointing error by more than a factor of six. The adaptive compensation system utilizes open loop compensation, closed loop compensation, and model reference compensation to provide the precise input to force telescope axis velocity to follow the ideal velocity.

Analytical study of the large orbital X-ray telescope imaging system

Results of an analytical study of the large orbital X-ray telescope (LOXT) are presented. The LOXT consists of a nested array of four conventional paraboloidal-hyperboloidal X-ray telescopes arranged with a common optical axis and a common focal plane. The composite nested array has a nominal effective focal length of 135.0 inches. The equations of the various mirror surfaces and the numerical values of the parameters in the defining equations are given in the technical specification sheets for the LOXT.

The Large Space Telescope program.

The 1980's should see the establishment of the first major observatory in space. This observatory will contain a long-lifetime reflecting telescope of about 120 inches clear aperture. Advantages of an orbiting telescope include the elimination of astronomical seeing effects and improvements in resolving power. The small images and darker sky will permit low-dispersion spectrographs to avoid more of the contaminating background. The crispness of the images also has potential for very efficient high-dispersion spectroscopy. A further advantage lies in the accessibility of all the sky and nearly around-the-clock observing.

Far-infrared observations of celestial objects by balloon-borne telescope.

The instrument described is an f/5 Newtonian telescope with a parabolic pyrex primary mirror. The telescope tube is 1.5 m long. A 61 cm baffle is included to provide shielding from off-axis objects such as the earth, the moon, and the sun. An outline of the regions covered by sky surveys in June 1970 and in April 1971 is presented. Approximately 750 square degrees of the sky have been covered, including 100 degrees along the galactic plane.

Conceptual design of the scientific instrument arrangement for the large space telescope

A description of the scientific instrument arrangement for the large space telescope (LST) is given, with some of the rationale for selecting this concept. The first section of this report describes the basic configuration and was designed for an f/20 telescope focal plane. The subsequent LSTWG meeting held in November gave some redirection to the scientific requirements, and these changes are described in the section, Configuration Update.

Zone generator for Large Space Telescope technology

A concept is presented for monitoring the optical adjustment and performance of a Large Space Telescope which consists of a 1.2m diameter turntable with a laser stylus to operate at speeds up to 30 rpm. The focus of the laser stylus is under closed loop control. A technique for scribing zones of suitable depth, width, and uniformity applicable to large telescope mirrors is also reported.

The design, construction and testing of the optics for a 147-cm-aperture telescope

Geodetic optics research for the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories (AFCRL) is described. The work consisted mainly of the fabrication of the optical components for a telescope with a 152-cm-diam (60-in.) primary mirror masked down to 147-cm-diam for use by the AFCRL for a lunar ranging experiment. Among the achievements of this contract were the following: completion of the primary and secondary mirrors for a high-quality 147-cm-diam telescope system in eight months from the start of edging the primary; manufacture and testing of a unique center mount for the primary according to an AFCRL design that allowed for a thin-edged and therefore less-massive mirror; and development of a quantitative analysis of the wire test for calculating the departure of the mirror figure from the design figure quickly and accurately after each polishing step. This analysis method in conjunction with a knowledge of polishing rates for given weights and diameters of tools, mirror, and polishing materials should considerably reduce the polishing time required for future large mirrors.

MSFC Skylab Apollo Telescope Mount thermal control system mission evaluation

The Skylab Saturn Workshop Assembly was designed to expand the knowledge of manned earth orbital operations and accomplish a multitude of scientific experiments. The Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM), a module of the Skylab Saturn Workshop Assembly, was the first manned solar observatory to successfully observe, monitor, and record the structure and behavior of the sun outside the earth's atmosphere. The ATM contained eight solar telescopes that recorded solar phenomena in X-ray, ultraviolet, white light, and hydrogen alpha regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. In addition, the ATM contained the Saturn Workshop Assembly's pointing and attitude control system, a data and communication system, and a solar array/rechargeable battery power system. This document presents the overall ATM thermal design philosophy, premission and mission support activity, and the mission thermal evaluation. Emphasis is placed on premission planning and orbital performance with particular attention on problems encountered during the mission. ATM thermal performance was satisfactory throughout the mission. Although several anomalies occurred, no failure was directly attributable to a deficiency in the thermal design.

Acoustic phenomena of open cavity airborne Cassegrainian telescopes

A series of large scale wind tunnel experiments were conducted on a gimbal mounted Cassegrainian telescope enclosed in a shroud with various aerodynamic fairings. The optical aperture was open to the airstream, resulting in acoustic inputs to the telescope. Resonance was shown to be dependent on free stream Mach number, internal cavity and external fairing geometry, and the angle of the plane of the opening relative to the free stream direction. Configurations were found which caused low noise and low unsteady internal loads at the expense of decreased view angle. Air injection over the cavity aided in reducing acoustic resonance.

Adaptive compensation for an optical tracking telescope

The application of model referenced adaptive control theory to an optical tracking telescope is discussed. The capability of the adaptive technique to compensate for mount irregularities such as inertial variations and bearing friction is demonstrated via field test results on a large tracking telescope. Results are presented which show a 6 to 1 improvement in tracking accuracy for a worst-case satellite trajectory.

Astronomical observations with the University College London balloon borne telescope

The characteristics of a telescope system which was developed for high altitude balloon astronomy are discussed. A drawing of the optical system of the telescope is provided. A sample of the signals recorded during one of the flights is included. The correlation between the infrared flux and the radio continuum flux is analyzed. A far infrared map of the radio and infrared peaks of selected stars is developed. The spectrum of the planet Saturn is plotted to show intensity as compared with wavenumber.

Design and performance of a 39cm balloon-borne telescope

A system for stabilizing a balloon-borne telescope using a star sensor device is described. Guide stars from minus four to plus four magnitude can be used and the sensor may be offset with respect to the telescope by as much as plus or minus five degrees in elevation and cross elevation to enable parts of the sky containing no suitable guide stars to be viewed. Acquisition of the guide star and setting of the offset coordinates is carried out by ground command and both may be changed in flight. The main design parameters of the equipment are summarized. Block diagrams and circuit diagrams of the star tracker are provided.

A high sensitivity balloon-borne X-ray telescope system

A high sensitivity X-ray telescope system suitable for photometric type observations from balloon altitudes is described. The balloon gondola system is defined to include the performance requirements and the overall performance requirements of the balloon gondola support system. Diagrams of the gondola and the installed components are provided. The pointing and control system of the telescope is analyzed.

Stabilization, pointing and command control of a balloon-borne 1-meter telescope

A 1-meter balloon-borne telescope has been constructed and flown to observe far-infrared radiation from celestial sources. The attitude control systems must perform to the diffraction limit of the telescope for stabilization and have positioning capability for source acquisition. These and associated systems are discussed in detail, as is the command control of the payload as a whole.
