Earth Observatory Satellite system definition study. Report 1: Orbit/launch vehicle trade-off studies and recommendations

A summary of the constraints and requirements on the Earth Observatory Satellite (EOS-A) orbit and launch vehicle analysis is presented. The propulsion system (hydrazine) and the launch vehicle (Delta 2910) selected for EOS-A are examined. The rationale for the selection of the recommended orbital altitude of 418 nautical miles is explained. The original analysis was based on the EOS-A mission with the Thematic Mapper and the High Resolution Pointable Imager. The impact of the revised mission model is analyzed to show how the new mission model affects the previously defined propulsion system, launch vehicle, and orbit. A table is provided to show all aspects of the EOS multiple mission concepts. The subjects considered include the following: (1) mission orbit analysis, (2) spacecraft parametric performance analysis, (3) launch system performance analysis, and (4) orbits/launch vehicle selection.

A low-cost and realistic noisy light system for studying photosynthesis

Unlike the light conditions commonly used to grow photosynthetic organisms in the research laboratory, the light intensity in real environments is dynamic. A simple and low-cost system is described in which a commercial dimmable LED panel is controlled to simulate a sinusoidal function representing daylight hours and overlaid with stochastic shading events. The output closely resembles light intensity measurements on Earth’s surface on partly cloudy days or in lower levels of plant canopies. Here, this tool may be useful to researchers studying photosynthetic acclimation responses.

Some considerations for Space Tug launch site support operations.

The study reported was undertaken to investigate the requirements placed on the Space Tug by the ground operations. On the basis of the results obtained, it will be possible to consider in future Tug systems studies the full spectrum of both ground and flight operations requirements in defining selected Tug configurations. The central core of the study consists of a functional analysis of ground operations during the Tug turnaround. Electronic system studies were initiated concurrently with the functional analysis study phase to evaluate interrelationships between ground and vehicle checkout and fault isolation capability.

Power modeling of degraded PV systems: Case studies using a dynamically updated physical model (PV-Pro)

Power modeling, widely applied for health monitoring and power prediction, is crucial for the efficiency and reliability of Photovoltaic (PV) systems. The most common approach for power modeling uses a physical equivalent circuit model, with the core challenge being the estimation of model parameters. Traditional parameter estimation either relies on datasheet information, which does not reflect the system's current health status, especially for degraded PV systems, or requires additional I-V characterization, which is generally unavailable for large-scale PV systems. Thus, we build upon our previously developed tool, PV-Pro (originally proposed for degradation analysis), to enhance its application for power modeling of degraded PV systems. PV-Pro extracts model parameters from production data without requiring I-V characterization. This dynamic model, periodically updated, can closely capture the actual degradation status, enabling precise power modeling. PV-Pro is compared with popular power modeling techniques, including persistence, nominal physical, and various machine learning models. The results indicate that PV-Pro achieves outstanding power modeling performance, with an average nMAE of 1.4 % across four field-degraded PV systems, reducing error by 17.6 % compared to the best alternative technique. Furthermore, PV-Pro demonstrates robustness across different seasons and severities of degradation. The tool is available as a Python package at https://github.com/DuraMAT/pvpro.

Shuttle cryogenics supply system. Optimization study. Volume 5 B-2, part 1: Appendix programmers manual for math model

An appendix to the programmers manual for the mathematical model pertaining to the design of cryogenic supply systems for spacecraft is presented. The program listing was produced using the EXEC-8 LISTALL processor which lists a file in alphabetical order. Since the processor does not differentiate between subroutines, functions, and procedure definition processors, each subprogram has been relabeled to clearly identify the type of symbolic listing.

Using Quality Attributes to Bridge Systems Engineering Gaps : A Juno Ground Data Systems Case Study

The Juno Mission to Jupiter is the second mission selected by the NASA New Frontiers Program. Juno launched August 2011 and will reach Jupiter July 2016. Juno's payload system is composed of nine instruments plus a gravity science experiment. One of the primary functions of the Juno Ground Data System (GDS) is the assembly and distribution of the CFDP (CCSDS File Delivery Protocol) product telemetry, also referred to as raw science data, for eight out of the nine instruments. The GDS accomplishes this with the Instrument Data Pipeline (IDP). During payload integration, the first attempt to exercise the IDP in a flight like manner revealed that although the functional requirements were well understood, the system was unable to meet latency requirements with the as-is heritage design. A systems engineering gap emerged between Juno instrument data delivery requirements and the assumptions behind the heritage flight-ground interactions. This paper describes the use of quality attributes to measure and overcome this gap by introducing a new systems engineering activity, and a new monitoring service architecture that successfully delivered the performance metrics needed to validate Juno IDP.

Trade Study of System Level Ranked Radiation Protection Concepts for Deep Space Exploration

A strategic focus area for NASA is to pursue the development of technologies which support exploration in space beyond the current inhabited region of low earth orbit. An unresolved issue for crewed deep space exploration involves limiting crew radiation exposure to below acceptable levels, considering both solar particle events and galactic cosmic ray contributions to dosage. Galactic cosmic ray mitigation is not addressed in this paper, but by addressing credible, easily implemented, and mass efficient solutions for the possibility of solar particle events, additional margin is provided that can be used for cosmic ray dose accumulation. As a result, NASA s Advanced Engineering Systems project office initiated this Radiation Storm Shelter design activity. This paper reports on the first year results of an expected 3 year Storm Shelter study effort which will mature concepts and operational scenarios that protect exploration astronauts from solar particle radiation events. Large trade space definition, candidate concept ranking, and a planned demonstration comprised the majority of FY12 activities. A system key performance parameter is minimization of the required increase in mass needed to provide a safe environment. Total system mass along with operational assessments and other defined protection system metrics provide the guiding metrics to proceed with concept developments. After a downselect to four primary methods, the concepts were analyzed for dosage severity and the amount of shielding mass necessary to bring dosage to acceptable values. Besides analytical assessments, subscale models of several concepts and one full scale concept demonstrator were created. FY12 work terminated with a plan to demonstrate test articles of two selected approaches. The process of arriving at these selections and their current envisioned implementation are presented in this paper.

A study of system requirements for Phobos/Deimos missions. Volume 1: Summary

The technical feasibility of accomplishing a variety of cost-effective missions to the satellites of Mars were investigated. Three mission options were studied: a basic satellite rendezvous and landing mission, a satellite sample return mission, and a combination Mars landing and Phobos/Deimos exploration mission. Nominal science payloads and supporting subsystems were defined for each mission design. Configuration layouts, program schedules, and cost estimates were also developed for each option. Environmental criteria unique to the mission were developed. Supporting studies, research, and technology requirements were identified.
