Hydrodynamization times of a holographic fluid far from equilibrium

Here we investigate several hydrodynamization times for an ensemble of different far-from-equilibrium solutions of the strongly coupled $\mathscr{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma undergoing Bjorken flow. For the ensemble of initial data analyzed in the present work, we find that, with typical tolerances between 3% to 5%, the average hydrodynamization time associated with the late time convergence of the pressure anisotropy to the corresponding Borel resummed hydrodynamic attractor is approximately equal to the average hydrodynamization time associated with the Navier-Stokes result, while both are shorter than the average hydrodynamization time associated with second-order hydrodynamics. On the other hand, we find that the entropy density of the different solutions coalesces to second-order hydrodynamics long before entering in the Navier-Stokes regime. A clear hierarchy between the different average hydrodynamization times of the Bjorken expanding fluid is established for the set of analyzed initial data, comprising also some solutions which, whilst satisfying the dominant and the weak energy conditions at the initial time, evolve such as to transiently violate one or both conditions when the fluid is still far from equilibrium. In particular, solutions violating the weak energy condition are generally found to take a longer time to enter in the hydrodynamic regime than the other solutions.

Pions in proton structure and everywhere else

The pion cloud is important in nuclear physics and in a variety of low-energy hadronic phenomena. Here we argue that it is natural to expect it to also be important in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan studies of proton structure. We compute the necessary consequences of the pion cloud in connection with the recent SeaQuest data. The effects are detailed by using the exact kinematics of the experiment. Good agreement with the measurements is obtained. Thus, the universality of pionic effects is understood.

Extraction of the higher-twist parton distribution $e(x)$ from CLAS data

We present the first point-by-point extraction of a twist-3 PDF. The scalar PDF, e(x), is accessed through the analysis of the data for the sin φR-moment of the beam-spin asymmetry for dihadron production in semi-inclusive DIS off proton target at CLAS and CLAS12. The dihadron formalism allows for use of collinear framework, hence calling for a minimal set of approximations and hypotheses. The extracted PDF e(x) carries insights into the physics of the largely-unexplored quark-gluon correlations, and its first Mellin moment is related to the marginally known scalar charge of the nucleon. We show that the proton flavor combination of the scalar PDF is nonzero at more than 74% probability.

Characteristic momentum of Hydro + and a bound on the enhancement of the speed of sound near the QCD critical point

Near the critical point in the QCD phase diagram, hydrodynamics breaks down at a momentum where the frequency of the fastest hydrodynamic mode becomes comparable with the decay rate of the slowest nonhydrodynamic mode. Hydro+ was developed as a framework which extends the range of validity of hydrodynamics beyond that momentum value. This was achieved through coupling the hydrodynamic modes to the slowest nonhydrodynamic mode. In this work, analyzing the spectrum of linear perturbations in Hydro+, we find that a slow mode falls out of equilibrium if its momentum is greater than a characteristic momentum value. That characteristic momentum turns out to be set by the branch points of the dispersion relations. These branch points occur at the critical momenta of so-called spectral curves and are related to the radius of convergence of the derivative expansion. The existence of such a characteristic momentum scale suggests that a particular class of slow modes has no remarkable effect on the flow of the plasma. Based on these results, we show that there is an enhancement of the speed of sound due to the Hydro+ corrections compared to the known thermodynamic corrections near the critical point. This enhancement can not exceed a temperature-dependent upper bound which we derive near the critical point in the QCD phase diagram.
