RASA Field Performance at US International Monitoring Stations

This report attempts to collate, analyze, and summarize RASA performance over time at each of 11 US operated IMS stations. The performance over time was compared to routine maintenance operations. The data, in general, were summarized into a set analyzed almost exclusively in Excel. The data set allows for further probing into RASA performance over time. The data set would permit data to be routinely added for continued analysis. In general, all RASA systems ran within the CTBTO mandated the MDA requirements over their current lifetime of operations. The largest impacts to performance appeared to arise from variabilities of Germanium gamma detectors as they were replaced. It is noted that the air volumes of samples were not provided and had to be assumed to be constant over the period analyzed.

A Preliminary Investigation for the Use of Digital Gamma-Gamma Coincidence Spectrometry to Determine 239 Pu

Gamma-ray spectrometry is one of the most effective ways to determine the activity of 239 Pu, depending on activity levels. However, often high backgrounds in complex spectra with low amounts of 239 Pu can increase detection limits. The effectiveness of the use of gamma-gamma spectrometry in the characterization of 239 Pu was studied for the first time. Using the XIA Pixie-16 digital pulse processor, the gamma-gamma system was studied to establish unshielded background radiation, source to detector distances, Poisson statistics and gating of several gamma-rays from 239 Pu. The results clearly show that the distance between gamma ray spectrometers has a much bigger effort in counting statistics for the gamma-gamma coincidence detectors than a single detector. In addition, measurements demonstrated the background radiation to be virtually negligible, meaning gammagamma spectroscopy can still be very effective without requiring the usual lead shielding. Other measurements were taken to assure Poisson statistics were attained in the digital system. Preliminary measurements revealed 3 orders of magnitude background reduction for the measurement of 239 Pu using gated gamma-rays.

Workshop on Using a Git-based Repository for ASTM Committee Technical Knowledge Capture [Slides]

Consensus technical standards maintained by ASTM International rely on individual contributors to act as technical contacts, effectively stewards, for a particular standard. As a particular standard’s technical content evolves over time, the contact must update relevant tables, graphics, and supporting discussion. However, the details of the data sources and/or processes used to perform such updates may be separate enough from the standard such that expert knowledge is required to perform these updates. As a result of this need for expert knowledge, and the desire to capture that knowledge, subcommittee E10.05 (Nuclear Radiation Metrology) has experimented with using a git-based repository to capture data and processes to reproduce figures needed by E10.05 to maintain the ASTM standards under their jurisdiction. This workshop will provide an overview of the git-based repository site’s organization, operation, and outputs. It will then lead interested workshop participants through adding content, not yet already included in the repository to the site.

Criticality Accident Alarm System Shielding Benchmark: Integral Experiment Request 498, Critical Engineering Decision 2 Report

A workable design to perform a CAAS benchmark experiment is detailed herein. Key dimensions, materials, source intensity levels, and detectors are listed in this report. Sensitivity to 21 perturbations was determined to be acceptable. The next step will be for NCSP management to determine whether procurement should occur and if the experiment should proceed. The perturbation study suggests that the room return shield cavity radius and runout should be maintained to within a millimeter, the room return shield should be positioned carefully (perhaps with a laser range finder), and that the detectors should be mounted in a lightweight fixture such as aluminum, so their positioning is assured. Using a 3D scanner or photogrammetry to record part shapes may be beneficial. Further work is also needed to verify source reproducibility.

Uranium Holdup Monitoring with Compton Imaging as Function of Depth and Mass

Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) programs track masses of materials flowing through production processes, where some material remains in process equipment as holdup. Quantification of these masses using gamma emissions typically involves usage of a well characterized radiation detector and assumptions of geometric configuration to constrain detection efficiencies, where the Generalized Geometry Holdup (GGH) method is often used. Uncertainties on the order of ±50% are observed, where the difficulties arise based on the asymmetric and gradient distributions of material that do not fall within the bounds of GGH. Gamma imagers provide a possible means to improve this geometric knowledge. This work describes the process used in creating a series of mass standards to aid the development of imaging algorithms for quantification.

Event Response and Criticality Alarm Systems [Slides]

The smallest accident, in terms of fission yield and dose rate, that a criticality alarm system is required to detect. Need for a CAS shall be evaluated for all activities in which the inventory in individual unrelated areas exceeds 700g U-235, 500g U-233, 450 g Pu-239 OR 450g of any combination of these three isotopes. Unique configurations exist such that critical mass requirements may be less than the limits noted above.

Update to the Finite Cloud Dose Correction Factors in MACCS

In WASH - 1400, external exposure from the finite radioactive cloud (cloudshine) is calculated by assuming that the cloud is semi-infinite, the concentration of radioactive material is uniform, and by using a correction factor to account for these approximations. This correction factor is originally based upon formulations by Healy and depends on the effective size of the plume and the distance from the plume center to the receptor. The range of the finite cloud dose correction factor table from WASH - 1400 developed using Healy formulations can be exceeded in certain situations. When the range of the table is exceeded, no extrapolation is performed; rather interpolation at the edge of the table is performed per WASH - 1400. The tabulated values of these finite cloud dose correction factors from WASH - 1400 and the interpolation at the edge of the table have been used in MACCS since its creation. An expanded table of finite cloud dose correction factors is one way to reduce the need of using interpolation at the edge of the table. The generation of an expanded finite cloud dose correction factor table for future use in MACCS is documented in this report.

Development of Hopfield Artificial Neural Network for Anomaly Detection in Environmental Gamma Radiation Background: Consortium on Nuclear Security Technologies (CONNECT) (Q2 Report)

Environmental screening of gamma radiation consists of detecting weak nuisance and anomaly signal in the presence of strong and highly varying background. In a typical scenario, a mobile detector-spectrometer continuously measures gamma radiation spectra in short, e.g., one-second, signal acquisition intervals. The measurement data is a 2D matrix, where one dimension is gamma ray energy, and the other dimension is the number of measurements or total time. In principle, gamma radiation sources can be detected and identified from the measured data by their unique spectral lines. Detecting sources from data measured in a search scenario is difficult due to the highly varying background because of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), and low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of spectral signal measured during one-second acquisition intervals. The objective of this work is to explore supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms for development of a Hopfield Neural Network (HNN) in conjunction with an image processing algorithm for detection and identification of weak nuisances and anomalies events in the presence of a highly fluctuating background.
