The cool half of the H-R diagram in soft X-rays

The results of an Einstein Observatory program to map the occurrence of hot coronae (T greater than 1 million K) in the cool half of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram are reported. F-M dwarfs, and late F through early K star giants characterized by 10,000 K chromospheric and 20,000-200,000 K FUV emission lines were studied in one region, while a second region study included red giants later than K2 III and supergiants later than G5 Ib with weaker chromospheric emission and no high temperature species. Program goals comprised determination of the C IV division as seen in soft X-rays, and identification of stellar parameters which distinguish strong from weak coronal X-ray sources. A summary of target stars, X-ray fluxes, and UV emission profiles is provided, and coronal emissions, comparisons of C IV and wind boundaries, hybrid-spectrum supergiants, the energy balance of stellar outer atmospheres, stellar rotation and coronae, and evolutionary considerations are discussed, along with lines of future research.

Description and evaluation of the Acoustic Profiling of Ocean Currents (APOC) system used on R. V. Oceanus cruise 96 on 11-22 May 1981

The underway current profiling system which consists of a microprocessor controlled data logger that collects and formats data from a four beam Ametek-Straza 300 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler, heading from the ship's gyrocompass, and navigation information from a Loran-C receiver and a satellite navigation unit is discussed. Data are recorded on magnetic tape and real time is calculated. Time averaging is required to remove effects of ship motion. An intercomparison is made with a moored vector measuring current meter (VMCM). The mean difference in hourly averaged APOC and VMCM currents over the four hour intercomparison is a few mm s minus including: two Gulf Stream crossings, a warm core ring survey, and shallow water in a frontal zone to the east of Nantucket Shoals.

Reaching Mars: multi-criteria R&D portfolio selection for Mars exploration technology planning

The exploration of Mars has been the focus of increasing scientific interest about the planet and its relationship to Earth. A multi-criteria decision-making approach was developed to address the question, Given a Mars program composed of mission concepts dependent on a variety of alternative technology development programs, which combination of technologies would enable missions to maximize science return under a constrained budget?.

Results of Landing Tests of Kellett YG-1 Autogiro (A. C. R. 35-278)

Flight tests were made with a Kellett YG-1 autogiro to determine the relationship between the ground reaction and the vertical velocity at contact for landings of the flared and gliding three-point types. The data obtained are presented in the form of time histories of linear accelerations at the center of gravity resulting from the initial landing impact. In addition, the attitude angle and velocity of the autogiro at contact were measured. The landings were all mild as compared to those representative of airplanes tested in this manner, the maximum vertical velocity being 4.4 feet per second with a corresponding normal acceleration of 2.35 g.

leapR: An R Package for Multiomic Pathway Analysis

A generalized goal of many high-throughput data studies is to identify functional mecha-nisms that underlie observed biological phenomena, whether disease outcomes or metabolic out-put. Increasingly, studies that rely on multiple sources of high-throughput data (genomic, tran-scriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic) are faced with a challenge of utilizing the data in a way that maximizes utility. However, methods for integration of multiple forms of molecular data into a biolog-ically coherent frameworks are needed. Furthermore, we have developed a framework to assess biological pathway activity that relates to phenotypic outcome using multi-source data. Availability and implementation: The leapR package with user manual and example workflow is available for download from GitHub (https://github.com/biodataganache/leapR).

Correlations between electronic order and structural distortions and their ultrafast dynamics in the single-layer manganite P r 0.5 C a 1.5 Mn O 4

Time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiments on the half-doped single-layered manganite Pr 0.5 Ca 1.5 Mn O 4 are used to monitor the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics of the structural distortion associated with the charge and orbital ordering (CO/OO). As in the nonlayered three-dimensional counterpart, the ordered phase melts in less than 100 fs after 800-nm photoexcitation and subsequently partially recovers due to thermal equilibration of electronic and vibrational systems. Photoexciting Pr 0.5 Ca 1.5 Mn O 4 below the transition temperature of a second structural phase transition that occurs around 146 K (deep inside the CO/OO phase) releases this structural transition, but progresses on a much slower timescale. Finally, this additional reduction of crystal symmetry, which we ascribe to a further tilt of the oxygen octahedra, can thus be considered to be only weakly coupled to CO/OO. Furthermore, static hard-x-ray and resonant soft-x-ray diffraction at the Mn L 2,3 edges experiments identify correlations between structural distortions and electronic order in thermal equilibrium.

High-precision mass measurement of Si 24 and a refined determination of the r p process at the A = 22 waiting point

We report a high-precision mass measurement of 24 Si, performed with the Low Energy Beam and Ion Trap (LEBIT) facility at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The atomic mass excess, 10 753.8 (37) keV, is a factor of 5 more precise than previous results. This substantially reduces the uncertainty of the 23 Al(p ,γ) 24 Si reaction rate, which is a key part of the rapid proton capture (rp) process powering type I x-ray bursts. Furthermore, the updated rate constrains the onset temperature of the (α,p) process at the 22 Mg waiting point to a precision of 9%.
