Transfer of EP and Doping Technology for PIP-II HB650 Cavities from Fermilab to Industry

Fermilab has optimized the surface processing conditions for PIP-II high beta 650 MHz cavities. This encompasses conditions for bulk electropolishing, heat treatment, nitrogen doping, post-doping final electropolishing, and post-processing surface rinsing. The technology has been effectively transitioned to industry. This paper highlights the efforts made to fine-tune the process and to smoothly share them with the partner labs and an associated vendor.

Medium Temperature Furnace Baking of Low-beta 650 MHz Five-cell Cavities

Medium Temperature baking of low beta 650 MHz cavities was conducted in a UHV furnace. A systematic study of cavity surface resistance components, residual and BCS, was conducted, including analyzing surface resistance due to trapped magnetic flux. Cavities showed an average 4.5 nano-ohm surface resistance at 17 MV/m under 2 K, which meets PIP-II specifications with a 40% margin. The results provided helpful information for the PIP-II project to optimize the cavity processing recipe for cryomodule application. The results were compared to the 1.3 GHz cavity that received a similar furnace baking.

100 Gbps Radiation Tolerant Optical Transceiver (Final Technical Report)

The overall technical objective in phase I for the Surface Emitting Laser-Electro-Absorption Modulator (EAM) was to demonstrate feasibility of this approach by designing and building the laser-EAM chips, optimizing the fabrication process for the Laser/EAM in a series of 3 fabrication runs, irradiating Laser/EAM chips from each run and DC testing of the chips post radiation. 100 Gbps/channel testing would be done at the end of the phase II program before and after radiation. The overall technical objective for the driver circuit was to demonstrate the radiation tolerance of a circuit using the same technology as the driver, and to design the appropriate driver circuit.

Intelligent Monitoring Systems and Advanced Well Integrity and Mitigation

Long-term seismic monitoring of carbon capture and storage projects is needed to verify that the injected gas is safely stored in the subsurface until permanence can be assured. Conventional surface seismic monitoring techniques are usually expensive, require highly invasive surface operations, and need significant time investments on the part of personnel for both the field effort and processing the acquired data. For these reasons, permanent reservoir monitoring technologies are preferred, as they can offer a cost-effective solution for long-term monitoring. As part of the monitoring program of the Archer Daniels Midland’s large-scale injection of CO 2 in Decatur, Illinois, USA, a continuous seismic monitoring array was installed using a combination of surface orbital vibrator (SOV) sources and fiber-optic cables for distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) acquisition with the objective to build a continuous monitoring array. The aim of the presented project was to build a monitoring array and platform that integrates real-time seismic data with conventional data streams and provides continuous data analysis using dynamic computational models to deliver a comprehensive real-time assessment of subsurface conditions. It is in this context that the Intelligent Monitoring Systems and Advanced Well Integrity and Mitigation project was proposed with the objective to develop an integrated architecture that utilizes a permanent seismic monitoring network, combines the real-time geophysical and process data with reservoir flow and geomechanical models to create a comprehensive monitoring, visualization, and control system that delivers critical information for process surveillance and optimization.

Thermal Instability in the Manufacturing of Wind Turbine Blade Spar Caps – Phase 2

As the wind turbine industry continues to develop, the technology surrounding the design, development, and manufacturing of blades requires advancement as well. Wind turbine blades continue to increase in size, increasing the cost and time associated with manufacturing. Simulation driven manufacturing cycle design is required for the industry to maintain manufacturing schedules and optimize the manufacturing process. A recent effort to reduce the cycle time of wind blade spar caps encountered a recurring manufacturing defect during the exotherm and curing of the resin system after filling in the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. Thermal waves developed in sections of the spar cap resulting in unacceptable part tolerances, requiring the parts to be thrown out. The first phase of this IACMI project focused on characterizing the fabric and epoxy system used in manufacturing and simulating the manufacturing process to determine the root cause of the thermal waves. The second phase of this project refined and validated the manufacturing simulations. The simulation workflow was then used to analyze multiple cure cycle options to determine if the thermal waves would appear. The estimated filling time from the filling simulation was shown to match well to experiment, and the temperature history from the curing simulation lined up well with experiment. This indicates that these simulations could be used to evaluate future curing cycles to be used with manufacturing. It is recommended that the distortion simulation work be completed for this project, as it would allow for further manufacturing cycle evaluation through the prediction of stresses and strains in the part. This could provide indicators of defects like the thermal waves seen in manufacturing earlier.

Plant-Based Ingredients from the Ocean (CRADA Final Report)

During the LEEP fellowship, our research was focused on optimizing methods to extract protein from red seaweeds to create a protein concentrate that can be used as an ingredient in delicious foods with an emphasis on creating plant-based meat products. We came into the fellowship with a preliminary method for extracting protein from red seaweeds. Over the course of the fellowship, we optimized the bench process, scaled the bench process to pilot scale equipment, and characterized our protein concentrate. The fellowship helped to advance our business in several ways. First, it provided a stipend, additional funding, and lab space to work. This financial aspect provided us with the ability to focus on time to refine our business and technology plan. In its absence, we likely would have pitched for pre-seed money at too early of a stage, before we had mapped out a successful plan. The fellowship helped us to craft and refine our message and our overall company direction. This in turn, helped us to find the right investors that matched our goals, which helped us to close our seed round and move forward. Lastly, the fellowship gave us access to an amazing network, allowing us to learn from the successes and challenges of a variety of startups at various stages of growth.

Finding Electronic Structure Machine Learning Surrogates without Training

A myriad of phenomena in materials science and chemistry rely on quantum-level simulations of the electronic structure in matter. While moving to larger length and time scales has been a pressing issue for decades, such large-scale electronic structure calculations are still challenging despite modern software approaches and advances in high-performance computing. The silver lining in this regard is the use of machine learning to accelerate electronic structure calculations – this line of research has recently gained growing attention. The grand challenge therein is finding a suitable machine-learning model during a process called hyperparameter optimization. This, however, causes a massive computational overhead in addition to that of data generation. We accelerate the construction of machine-learning surrogate models by roughly two orders of magnitude by circumventing excessive training during the hyperparameter optimization phase. We demonstrate our workflow for Kohn-Sham density functional theory, the most popular computational method in materials science and chemistry.
