Machine-learning-based automatic small-angle measurement between planar surfaces in interferometer images: A 2D multilayer Laue lenses case

Here, we report a new machine-learning-based approach to automatically measure the small angle between multiple planar surfaces characterized by white light interferometers. By applying an unsupervised clustering algorithm, DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise), the multiple surfaces in an interferometer image are automatically identified as distinct surfaces. The angles between every two surfaces are then calculated through the surface fitting. This method can be applied to multiple surfaces regardless of their shapes and locations and significantly simplifies the angle measurement procedure. Using the developed method, we have demonstrated a quick and precise angle measurement for the alignment of 2D Multilayer Laue Lenses (MLLs) for the development of high-resolution x-ray microscopy. This automatic, accurate, and robust small-angle measurement method is compatible with widely used white light interferometers and can be further applied to other metrology applications of interferometer results.

Retrievals of Aerosol Optical and Microphysical Properties from Imaging Polar Nephelometer Scattering Measurements

A method for the retrieval of aerosol optical and microphysical properties from in situ light-scattering measurements is presented and the results are compared with existing measurement techniques. The Generalized Retrieval of Aerosol and Surface Properties (GRASP) is applied to airborne and laboratory measurements made by a novel polar nephelometer. This instrument, the Polarized Imaging Nephelometer (PI-Neph), is capable of making high-accuracy field measurements of phase function and degree of linear polarization, at three visible wavelengths, over a wide angular range of 3 to 177°. The resulting retrieval produces particle size distributions (PSDs) that agree, within experimental error, with measurements made by commercial optical particle counters (OPCs). Additionally, the retrieved real part of the refractive index is generally found to be within the predicted error of 0.02 from the expected values for three species of humidified salt particles, with a refractive index that is well established. The airborne measurements used in this work were made aboard the NASA DC-8 aircraft during the Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) field campaign, and the inversion of this data represents the first aerosol retrievals of airborne polar nephelometer data. The results provide confidence in the real refractive index product, as well as in the retrieval's ability to accurately determine PSD, without assumptions about refractive index that are required by the majority of OPCs.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 Results: Deep Field optical + near-infrared images and catalogue

ABSTRACT We describe the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Deep Fields, a set of images and associated multiwavelength catalogue (ugrizJHKs) built from Dark Energy Camera (DECam) and Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) data. The DES Deep Fields comprise 11 fields (10 DES supernova fields plus COSMOS), with a total area of ∼30 sq. deg. in ugriz bands and reaching a maximum i-band depth of 26.75 (AB, 10σ, 2 arcsec). We present a catalogue for the DES 3-yr cosmology analysis of those four fields with full 8-band coverage, totalling 5.88 sq. deg. after masking. Numbering 2.8 million objects (1.6 million post-masking), our catalogue is drawn from images coadded to consistent depths of r = 25.7, i = 25, and z = 24.3 mag. We use a new model-fitting code, built upon established methods, to deblend sources and ensure consistent colours across the u-band to Ks-band wavelength range. We further detail the tight control we maintain over the point-spread function modelling required for the model fitting, astrometry and consistency of photometry between the four fields. The catalogue allows us to perform a careful star–galaxy separation and produces excellent photometric redshift performance (NMAD = 0.023 at i < 23). The Deep-Fields catalogue will be made available as part of the cosmology data products release, following the completion of the DES 3-yr weak lensing and galaxy clustering cosmology work.

Laser and optical transport line for laser-based ion beam diagnostics and control in the SNS linear accelerator

We report our recent upgrade of the laser and optical transport line for the laser-based ion beam diagnostics (laser wire) system at the linear accelerator (linac) of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). A new light source based on diodepumped solid-state laser amplifiers has been developed to provide near diffraction-limited laser beam with a variety of pulse structures. The free-space optical transport line has been modified to include image relay optics with remote control, which greatly improved the laser beam quality and position stability at individual measurement stations. The upgraded system enables novel beam diagnostics/control capabilities including longitudinal profile measurement and high-energy proton beam extraction from the SNS linac.

Coherent optical system of modular imaging collectors (COSMIC) - An approach for a large aperture high angular resolution telescope in space

Very high angular resolution can be achieved in UV/optical astronomy through interferometers in space. A concept analysis of COSMIC, which may be placed into orbit by the Space Shuttle in the late 1990's, is discussed. The photon-collecting area is three times larger than that of Space Telescope (ST), and exceeds its resolution by approximately an order of magnitude. Several alternative configurations are presented to scope the extent of design approaches which may be achievable within the transportation capability of the Space Shuttle.

Acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) imaging spectrometer for NASA applications - System issues

A recently developed AOTF operating in the visible, 0.4-0.8 micron bandpass is presently compared with other spectrometer designs, with a view to the advantages it may uniquely offer for prospective NASA missions. Since spectral identification is accomplished by this system through the scanning of a few spectral bands, data storage requirements for spectral image analysis can be significantly reduced. Attention is given to spectral and imaging capabilities and their applicability to defense, remote sensing, and industrial uses.

A Survey of Massive Planets by Direct Imaging with Advanced Adaptive Optics

The observations are completed. The observing that has been done essentially on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope with the PUEO adaptive optics system, is sufficient to identify approximately 10 Jupiter masses objects around the selected targets. A small amount of data was also collected on the Gemini Telescope with the Hokupa'a adaptive optics system. For most of the stars of the sample, about 30mn of exposure time was collected per epoch, with at least 2 epochs. About 15% of the stars of the sample did not meet these requirements, due to observing difficulties listed below: (1) Guide star is too faint for the AO system; (2) The guide star is a close double (about 0.5 to 1 inch separation), which makes it unsuitable for AO guiding; (3) For a few stars, weather and observing constraints could not allow observations.

Conjugate Observations of Optical Aurora with POLAR Satellite and Ground Based Imagers in Antarctica

Operation of the ultraviolet imager on the POLAR satellite permits the observation of Aurora Borealis in daylight during northern summer. With optical imagers in the Automatic Geophysical Observatories (AGO-s) large regions of the oval of Aurora Australis can be observed simultaneously during the southern winter polar night. This opportunity permits conducting a systematic study of the properties of auroras on opposite ends of the same field line. It is expected that simultaneously observed conjugate auroras occurring on closed field lines should be similar to each other in appearance because of the close connection between the two hemispheres through particle scattering and mirroring processes. On open or greatly distorted field lines there is no a priori expectation of similarity between conjugate auroras. To investigate the influence of different IMF conditions on auroral behavior we have examined conjugate data for periods of southward IMF. Sudden brightening and subsequent poleward expansions are observed to occur simultaneously in both hemispheres. The POLAR data show that sudden brightening are initiated at various local time regions. When the local time of this region is in the field of view of the AGO station network then corresponding brightening is also found to occur in the southern hemisphere. Large features such as substorm induced westward propagation and resulting auroral brightening seem to occur simultaneously on conjugate hemispheres. The widely different view scales make it difficult to make unique identification of individual auroral forms in the POLAR and in the ground based data but in a general sense the data is consistent with conjugate behavior.

Schlieren System and method for moving objects

A system and method are provided for recording density changes in a flow field surrounding a moving object. A mask having an aperture for regulating the passage of images is placed in front of an image recording medium. An optical system is placed in front of the mask. A transition having a light field-of-view and a dark field-of-view is located beyond the test object. The optical system focuses an image of the transition at the mask such that the aperture causes a band of light to be defined on the image recording medium. The optical system further focuses an image of the object through the aperture of the mask so that the image of the object appears on the image recording medium. Relative motion is minimized between the mask and the transition. Relative motion is also minimized between the image recording medium and the image of the object. In this way, the image of the object and density changes in a flow field surrounding the object are recorded on the image recording medium when the object crosses the transition in front of the optical system.

Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) Global Aerosol Optical Depth Validation Based on 2 Years of Coincident Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) Observations

Performance of the Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) early postlaunch aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrieval algorithm is assessed quantitatively over land and ocean by comparison with a 2-year measurement record of globally distributed AERONET Sun photometers. There are sufficient coincident observations to stratify the data set by season and expected aerosol type. In addition to reporting uncertainty envelopes, we identify trends and outliers, and investigate their likely causes, with the aim of refining algorithm performance. Overall, about 2/3 of the MISR-retrieved AOT values fall within [0.05 or 20% x AOT] of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). More than a third are within [0.03 or 10% x AOT]. Correlation coefficients are highest for maritime stations (approx.0.9), and lowest for dusty sites (more than approx.0.7). Retrieved spectral slopes closely match Sun photometer values for Biomass burning and continental aerosol types. Detailed comparisons suggest that adding to the algorithm climatology more absorbing spherical particles, more realistic dust analogs, and a richer selection of multimodal aerosol mixtures would reduce the remaining discrepancies for MISR retrievals over land; in addition, refining instrument low-light-level calibration could reduce or eliminate a small but systematic offset in maritime AOT values. On the basis of cases for which current particle models are representative, a second-generation MISR aerosol retrieval algorithm incorporating these improvements could provide AOT accuracy unprecedented for a spaceborne technique.
