Global anomaly matching in the higher-dimensional $\mathbb{CP}^{N–1}$ model

Here, we investigate 't Hooft anomalies in the $\mathbb{CP}^{N–1}$ model in space-time dimensions higher than two and identify two types of anomalies: one is a mixed anomaly between the PSU ( N ) flavor-rotation and magnetic symmetries and the other is between the reflection and magnetic symmetries. The latter indicates that even in the absence of the flavor symmetry, the model cannot have a unique gapped ground state as long as the reflection and magnetic symmetries are respected. We also clarified the condition for the 't Hooft anomalies to survive under monopole deformations, which explicitly break the magnetic symmetry down to its discrete subgroup. Besides, we explicitly show how the identified 't Hooft anomalies match in the low-energy effective description of symmetry broken phases—the Néel, U(1) spin liquid, and the valence bond solid phases. An application to the finite-temperature phase diagram of the four-dimensional $\mathbb{CP}^{N–1}$ model is also discussed.

Higher Chern numbers in multilayer Lieb lattices ( N ≥ 2 ): Topological transitions and quadratic band crossing lines

In this work, we consider a hitherto unexplored setting of a stacked multilayer (N) Lieb lattice which undergoes an unusual topological transition in the presence of intralayer spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The specific stacking configuration induces an effective nonsymmorphic two-dimensional lattice structure, even though the constituent monolayer Lieb lattice is characterized by a symmorphic space group. This emergent nonsymmorphicity leads to multiple doubly degenerate bands extending over the edge of the Brillouin zone (i.e., quadratic band crossing lines). In the presence of intralayer SOC, these doubly degenerate bands typically form three N-band subspaces, mutually separated by two band gaps. We analyze the topological properties of these multiband subspaces, using specially devised Wilson loop operators to compute non-Abelian Berry phases in order to show that they carry a higher Chern number N.

Microscopic origin of the high thermoelectric figure of merit of n -doped SnSe

Excellent thermoelectric performance in the out-of-layer n-doped SnSe has been observed experimentally [Chang et al., Science 360, 778-783 (2018)]. Though, a first-principles investigation of the dominant scattering mechanisms governing all thermoelectric transport properties is lacking. In the present work, by applying extensive first-principles calculations of electron-phonon coupling associated with parameterized calculation of the scattering by ionized impurities, we investigate the reasons behind the superior figure of merit as well as the enhancement of zT above 600 K in n-doped out-of-layer SnSe, as compared to p-doped SnSe with similar carrier densities. For the n-doped case, the relaxation time is dominated by ionized impurity scattering and increases with temperature, a feature that maintains the power factor at high values at higher temperatures and simultaneously causes the carrier thermal conductivity at zero electric current (κ el ) to decrease faster for higher temperatures, leading to an ultrahigh-zT = 3.1 at 807 K. We rationalize the roles played by κ el and κ 0 (the thermal conductivity due to carrier transport under isoelectrochemical conditions) in the determination of zT. Our results show the ratio between κ 0 and the lattice thermal conductivity indeed corresponds to the upper limit for zT, whereas the difference between calculated zT and the upper limit is proportional to κ el .

Role of carbon and hydrogen in limiting n -type doping of monoclinic ( Al x Ga 1 – x ) 2 O 3

In this study, we use hybrid density functional calculations to assess n -type doping in monoclinic ( Al x Ga 1 – x ) 2 O 3 alloys. We focus on silicon, the most promising donor dopant, and study the structural properties, formation energies, and charge-state transition levels of its various configurations. We also explore the impact of carbon and hydrogen, which are common impurities in metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). In Ga 2 O 3 , Si Ga is an effective shallow donor, but in Al 2 O 3 Si Al acts as a DX center with a ( + / – ) transition level in the band gap. Interstitial hydrogen acts as a shallow donor in Ga 2 O 3 but behaves as a compensating acceptor in n -type Al 2 O 3 . Interpolation indicates that Si is an effective donor in ( Al x Ga 1 – x ) 2 O 3 up to 70% Al, but it can be compensated by hydrogen already at 1% Al. We also assess the diffusivity of hydrogen and study complex formation. Si cation – H complexes have relatively low binding energies. Substitutional carbon on a cation site acts as a shallow donor in Ga 2 O 3 , but can be stable in a negative charge state in ( Al x Ga 1 – x ) 2 O 3 when x > 5 % . Substitutional carbon on an oxygen site ( C O ) always acts as an acceptor in n -type ( Al x Ga 1 – x ) 2 O 3 , but will incorporate only under relatively oxygen-poor conditions. C O – H complexes can actually incorporate more easily, explaining observations of carbon-related compensation in Ga 2 O 3 grown by MOCVD. We also investigate C cation – H complexes, finding they have high binding energies and act as compensating acceptors when x > 56 % ; otherwise the hydrogen just passivates the unintentional carbon donors. C-H complex formation explains why MOCVD-grown Ga 2 O 3 can exhibit record-low free-carrier concentrations, in spite of the unavoidable incorporation of carbon. Our study highlights that, while Si is in principle a suitable shallow donor in ( Al x Ga 1 – x ) 2 O 3 alloys up to high Al compositions, control of unintentional impurities is essential to avoid compensation.

Computational search for itinerant n -type and p -type magnetic semiconductors: Arsenopyrites as bipolar magnetic semiconductors

We report a computational search for three-dimensional bulk ferromagnetic semiconductors based on itinerant Stoner physics. Stoner-based ferromagnetic semiconductors require an unusual combination of high band edge density of states and moderate transport effective mass. Nonetheless, several potential materials are found. Here, we identify arsenopyrites, exemplified by FeAsS, as materials that, with suitable doping, exhibit ferromagnetic semiconducting behavior for both n- and p-type dopants. The existence of a material that becomes ferromagnetic for both p and n types may enable device concepts, for example, ferromagnetic p–n junction devices.

Langevin dynamics of generalized spins as SU( N ) coherent states

Classical models of spin systems traditionally retain only the dipole moments, but a quantum spin state will frequently have additional structure. Spins of magnitude S have N = 2⁢S + 1 levels. Alternatively, the spin state is fully characterized by a set of N 2 - 1 local physical observables, which we interpret as generalized spin components. For example, a spin with S = 1 has three dipole components and five quadrupole components. Further, these components evolve under a generalization of the classical Landau-Lifshitz dynamics, which can be extended with noise and damping terms. In this paper, we reformulate the dynamical equations of motion as a Langevin dynamics of SU(N) coherent states in the Schrödinger picture. This viewpoint is especially useful as the basis for an efficient numerical method to sample spin configurations in thermal equilibrium and to simulate the relaxation and driven motion of topological solitons. To illustrate the approach, we simulate a nonequilibrium relaxation process that creates CP 2 skyrmions, which are topological defects with both dipole and quadrupole character.

Microscopic investigation of the 8 Li(n,γ)Li 9 reaction

Background: The 8 Li (n, γ) 9 Li reaction plays an important role in several astrophysics scenarios. It cannot be measured directly and indirect experiments have so far provided only cross section limits. Theoretical predictions differ by an order of magnitude. Purpose: In this work we study the properties of 9 Li bound states and low-lying resonances and calculate the 8 Li(n, γ) 9 Li cross section within the no-core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) with chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions as input. Methods: Here, the NCSMC is an ab initio method applicable to light nuclei that provides a unified description of bound and scattering states well suited to calculate low-energy nuclear scattering and reactions. For the capture cross section calculation, we adjust calculated thresholds to experimental values. Results: Our calculations reproduce the experimentally known bound states as well as the lowest 5/2 – resonance of 9 Li. We predict a 3/2 – spin-parity assignment for the resonance observed at 5.38 MeV. In addition to the very narrow 7/2 – resonance corresponding presumably to the experimental 6.43 MeV state, we find several other broad low-lying resonances. Conclusions: Our calculated 8 Li(n, γ) 9 Li cross section is within the limits derived from the 1998 National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory Coulomb-dissociation experiment. However, it is higher than cross sections obtained in recent phenomenological studies. It is dominated by a direct E1 capture to the ground state with a resonant contribution at ≈ 0.2 MeV due to E2/M1 radiation enhanced by the 5/2 – resonance.

Investigation of secondary γ -ray angular distributions using the N 15 ( p , α 1 γ ) C * 12 reaction

The observation of secondary γ-rays provides an alternative method of measuring cross sections that populate excited final states in nuclear reactions. The angular distributions of these γ-rays also provide information on the underlying reaction mechanism. Despite a large amount of data of this type in the literature, publicly available R-matrix codes do not have the ability to calculate these types of angular distributions. In this report, the mathematical formalism derived in Brune and deBoer is implemented in the R-matrix code AZURE2 and calculations are compared with previous data from the literature for the 15 N( p, α1γ ) 12 C* reaction. In addition, new measurements, made at the University of Notre Dame Nuclear Science Laboratory using the Hybrid Array of Gamma Ray Detectors (HAGRiD), are reported that span an energy range from E p = 0.88 to 4.0 MeV. Excellent agreement between data and the phenomenological fit is obtained up to the limit of the previous fit at E p = 2.0 MeV and the R-matrix fit is extended from E x ≈ 13.5 up to E x ≈ 15.3 MeV, where 15 N+p and 12 C+α reactions are fit simultaneously for the first time. An excellent reproduction of the 15 N( p, α1γ ) 12 C* and 12 C(α, α) 12 C data is achieved, but inconsistencies and difficulty in fitting other data is encountered and discussed.

Large- N c constraints for elastic dark-matter–light-nucleus scattering in pionless effective field theory

Recent proposals for the use of light nuclei as dark-matter direct detection targets necessitate a strong theoretical understanding of the nuclear physics involved. We perform relevant calculations for dark-matter–light-nucleus scattering in a combined pionless effective field theory and large-N c expansion, where N c is the number of quark colors. Here, we include a general set of one-nucleon currents that have been used in other effective theories, as well as novel two-nucleon contact currents. First, we obtain constraints for the relative sizes of the dark-matter couplings to the one- and two-nucleon currents through the large-N c expansion. Then, we use these constraints to make predictions for the relative sizes of spin-dependent and spin-independent cross sections for dark-matter scattering off of a nucleon, a deuteron, a triton, and helium-3.

Nuclear properties with semilocal momentum-space regularized chiral interactions beyond N 2 LO

We present a comprehensive investigation of few-nucleon systems as well as light and medium-mass nuclei up to A = 48 using the current Low Energy Nuclear Physics International Collaboration two-nucleon interactions in combination with the third-order (N 2 LO) three-nucleon forces. To address the systematic overbinding of nuclei starting from A ≈ 10 found in our earlier study utilizing the N 2 LO two- and three-nucleon forces, we take into account higher-order corrections to the two-nucleon potentials up through fifth order in chiral effective field theory. Here, the resulting Hamiltonian can be completely determined using the A = 3 binding energies and selected nucleon-deuteron cross sections as input. It is then shown to predict other nucleon-deuteron scattering observables and spectra of light p-shell nuclei, for which a detailed correlated truncation error analysis is performed, in agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the predicted ground state energies of nuclei in the oxygen isotopic chain from 14 O to 26 O as well as 40 Ca and 48 Ca show a remarkably good agreement with experimental values, given that the Hamiltonian is fixed completely from the A ≤ 3 data, once the fourth-order (N 3 LO) corrections to the two-nucleon interactions are taken into account. On the other hand, the charge radii are found to be underpredicted by ≈10% for the oxygen isotopes and by almost 20% for 40 Ca and 48 Ca.

Measuring the cross section of the N 15 ( α , γ ) 19 F reaction using a single-fluid bubble chamber

15 N(α, γ) 19 F is believed to be the primary means of stellar nucleosynthesis of fluorine. Here we present the use of a single-fluid bubble chamber to measure the cross section of the time-inverse photo-dissociation reaction. The method benefits from a luminosity increase of several orders of magnitude due to the use of a thicker liquid target - compared to thin films or gas targets - and from the reciprocity theorem. We discuss the results of experiments at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, where the cross section of the photodisintegration process 19 F(γ, α) 15 N was measured by bombarding a superheated fluid of C 3 F 8 with bremsstrahlung γ rays produced by impinging a 4 - 5.5 MeV electron beam on a Cu radiator. From the photodissociation yield the cross section was extracted by performing a convolution with a Monte Carlo–generated γ-ray beam spectrum. The measurement produced a cross section that was then time inverted using the reciprocity theorem. The cross section for the 15 N(α, γ) 19 F reaction was determined down to a value in the range of hundreds of picobarns. We report that with further improvements of the experimental setup the technique could potentially push cross section measurements down to the single picobarn range.

Infinitely many 4D N = 1 SCFTs with a = c

Here, we study a rich set of four-dimensional N = 1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with both central charges identical: a = c. We construct them via the diagonal N = 1 gauging of the flavor symmetry G of a collection of N = 2 Argyres–Douglas theories of type D p (G), with or without additional adjoint chiral multiplets. In this way, we construct infinitely many theories that flow to interacting SCFTs with a = c in the infrared. Lastly, we briefly highlight the features of the SCFTs without a = c that arise from generalizing this construction.

Lattice QCD study of π Σ − K ¯ N scattering and the Λ ( 1405 ) resonance

A lattice QCD computation of the coupled channel π Σ – K ¯ N scattering amplitudes in the Λ ( 1405 ) region is detailed. Results are obtained using a single ensemble of gauge field configurations with N f = 2 + 1 dynamical quark flavors and m π ≈ 200 MeV and m K ≈ 487 MeV . Hermitian correlation matrices using both single baryon and meson-baryon interpolating operators for a variety of different total momenta and irreducible representations are used. Several parametrizations of the two-channel scattering K -matrix are utilized to obtain the scattering amplitudes from the finite-volume spectrum. The amplitudes, continued to the complex energy plane, exhibit a virtual bound state below the π Σ threshold and a resonance pole just below the K ¯ N threshold. Landscape of 4d N = 1 SCFTs with a = c

We study a landscape of four-dimensional N = 1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with identical central charges. These theories are obtained by renormalization group flows triggered by supersymmetry-preserving superpotential deformations of the N = 1 gauging of the flavor symmetry of a collection of N = 2 D p ( G ) Argyres-Douglas SCFTs. In this work, we focus on the fixed points in the landscape of the S U ( 3 ) gauging of three copies of the D 2 ( S U ( 3 ) ) = H 2 theory together with an adjoint-valued chiral multiplet. We catalog the network of a = c fixed points, and, along the way, we find a variety of dualities and instances of supersymmetry enhancement. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Shape Changes in the N = 28 Island of Inversion: Collective Structures Built on Configuration-Coexisting States in 43 S

The neutron-rich nuclei in the N = 28 island of inversion have attracted considerable experimental and theoretical attention, providing great insight into the evolution of shell structure and nuclear shape in exotic nuclei. In this study, for the first time, quadrupole collectivity is assessed simultaneously on top of the 3/2 - ground state and the 7/2 - shape-coexisting isomer of 43 S, putting the unique interpretation of shape and configuration coexistence at N = 27 and 28 in the sulfur isotopic chain to the test. From an analysis of the electromagnetic transition strengths and quadrupole moments predicted within the shell model, it is shown that the onset of shape coexistence and the emergence of a simple collective structure appear suddenly in 43 S with no indication of such patterns in the N = 27 isotone 45 Ar.

First Evidence of Axial Shape Asymmetry and Configuration Coexistence in Zn 74 : Suggestion for a Northern Extension of the N = 40 Island of Inversion

The excited states of N=44 74 Zn were investigated via γ-ray spectroscopy following 74 Cu β decay. By exploiting γ-γ angular correlation analysis, the 2$_2^+$, 3$_1^+$, 0$_2^+$, and 2$_3^+$ states in 74 Zn were firmly established. The γ-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2$_2^+$, 3$_1^+$, and 2$_3^+$ states were measured, allowing for the extraction of relative B(E2) values. In particular, the 2$_3^+$→0$_2^+$ and 2$_3^+$→4$_1^+$ transitions were observed for the first time. Here the results show excellent agreement with new microscopic large-scale shell-model calculations, and are discussed in terms of underlying shapes, as well as the role of neutron excitations across the N=40 gap. Enhanced axial shape asymmetry (triaxiality) is suggested to characterize 74 Zn in its ground state. Furthermore, an excited K=0 band with a significantly larger softness in its shape is identified. A shore of the N=40 "island of inversion" appears to manifest above Z=26, previously thought as its northern limit in the chart of the nuclides.

Quantum Many-Body Theory from a Solution of the N -Representability Problem

Here, in this study, we present a many-body theory based on a solution of the N-representability problem in which the ground-state two-particle reduced density matrix (2-RDM) is determined directly without the many-particle wave function. We derive an equation that re-expresses physical constraints on higher-order RDMs to generate direct constraints on the 2-RDM, which are required for its derivation from an N-particle density matrix, known as N-representability conditions. The approach produces a complete hierarchy of 2-RDM constraints that do not depend explicitly upon the higher RDMs or the wave function. By using the two-particle part of a unitary decomposition of higher order constraint matrices, we can solve the energy minimization by semidefinite programming in a form where the low-rank structure of these matrices can be potentially exploited. We illustrate by computing the ground-state electronic energy and properties of the H 8 ring.

Large N Fractons

We consider theories of N -component fields with exotic spacetime symmetries, including a conserved dipole moment. Microscopic charges are immobile by symmetry, and so resemble fractons. Using collective fields we solve these models to leading order in large N . The large N solution reveals that these models are strongly correlated, and that interactions dress the microscopic charges so that they become mobile, long-lived quasiparticles. Dipole symmetry is spontaneously broken throughout the phase diagram of these models, leading to a low-energy Goldstone description. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
