Minimized cyanobacterial microcompartment for carbon dioxide fixation

A fusion chimeric protein is described herein that can assemble a functional carboxysome core, which is able to fix carbon by taking atmospheric carbon dioxide and converting it into useful carbon-containing compounds such as 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PGA).

Device for residue handling minimization with vacuum-assisted separations

A device for collection of residue from separation columns. A manifold provides for multiple sample ports that are fluidly connected to a vacuum port by at least one channel. Residue from the separation columns is pulled through the sample ports, into the channel, and then to the vacuum port. From the vacuum port the residue can be moved, under the force of the vacuum, directly to a drain or to a collection vessel connected with a drain.

Jitter minimization flexure pointing system

The illustrative embodiments provide for a telescope. The telescope includes a housing; an optical assembly disposed inside the housing and configured to gather light from a distant object; and a jitter reduction system connected to the housing. The jitter reduction system includes a first flexure assembly comprising a first base to which is attached to a first armature connected to a first linear motor winding configured to push out a first flexure connected to the first armature and to push out a second flexure connected to the first armature opposite the first flexure, wherein the first flexure and the second flexure have a first normal axis pointing through a center of mass of the optical assembly.

OLED with minimal plasmonic losses

A top-emitting organic light emitting device (OLED) that comprises: a substrate having an inward side and an outward side; an OLED body that includes a transparent bottom electrode proximate to the inward side of the substrate, an organic emitting layer, and a transparent top electrode in that order; a non-metallic, diffuse reflective layer with a roughened top surface proximate to and facing the bottom transparent electrode; and a high refractive index waveguide layer. The diffuse reflective layer is positioned between the inward side of the substrate and the OLED body, and the waveguide layer is positioned between the diffuse layer and the bottom transparent electrode.

Energy-Efficient Forward Osmosis for FGD Wastewater Volume Minimization

A variant of forward osmosis, the Aquapod© process, was shown to be capable of concentrating FGDWW five-fold without the need for softening. The thermal and electrical energy consumption per unit of water produced was estimated to be 190 kJ/kg and ~2.2 kWh/m3, respectively. The FO process, in conjunction with a spray dryer, can achieve ZLD of 100 gpm of FGDWW with an estimated capital costs of $6.25 Million and a variable cost of $4.35/m3 of wastewater treated.

Lab Home Testing of Residential Isolation Space Control to Minimize Infectious Disease Transmission in Existing Single-Family Homes

Existing evidence strongly suggests that viral infectious diseases can be transmitted via an airborne route across distances in indoor environments. Accordingly, the risk of airborne transmission within homes should be managed. The public health emergency associated with SARS-CoV-2 makes controlling airborne transmission of respired viruses in indoor environments critical, especially in poorly ventilated indoor environments. The effectiveness of engineering interventions requiring minor efforts that create a negative-pressure isolation zone (IZ) for a contagious person has yet to be tested for existing residential homes. To mitigate the risk of airborne virus transmission and maximize health protection for the population in existing single-family homes, the relative effectiveness of several control strategies are investigated in this report. While very high-efficiency MERV filtration, high ventilation rates, and other controls can help be effective, most occupants are not likely to have the time or means for advanced measures found in hospitals. This project focused on testing relatively simple efforts that utilize existing or easy to acquire materials and simple processes.
