Medium-induced photon bremsstrahlung in neutrino-nucleus, antineutrino-nucleus, and electron-nucleus scattering from multiple QED interactions

Interactions of charged leptons with nuclei and the naive tree-level kinematics of these processes are affected by radiation of photons induced by the QED nuclear medium. We evaluate cross section modifications at leading orders of the number of correlated interactions inside the nucleus, known as the opacity expansion. We derive results for soft and collinear types of the bremsstrahlung at the first three orders in opacity and generalize them to higher orders. We present the leading in opacity energy spectra of soft and collinear photons and radiative energy loss inside the nucleus for experiments with lepton kinematics in the GeV energy range. At leading power of the Glauber soft-collinear effective field theory, the soft radiation is further resummed to all orders both in opacity and in the electromagnetic coupling constant. We find that the soft and collinear medium-induced radiation is vacuumlike, and additional corrections are power suppressed. Despite the negligible modification to the induced photon spectra, the nuclear medium-induced radiation sizably affects the broadening of charged leptons in the direction orthogonal to their propagation. Cogeneration of hot electrons from multiple laser-plasma instabilities

Interactions of two plasmon decay (TPD) and side stimulated Raman scattering (SSRS) were studied using 3-D particle-in-cell simulations under ICF-relevant conditions for linearly and circularly polarized lasers. In the linear stage, SSRS took place under n e = 0.235n c and TPD dominated near the quarter-critical density surface and their growth rates agreed with theory. In the nonlinear stage, SSRS reduced TPD through pump depletion. Hot electrons were found to be first accelerated by the SSRS plasma waves and then by TPD plasma waves through a co-generation mechanism. Compared to the linearly polarized case with the same laser intensity, both SSRS and TPD were reduced due to the lower laser amplitude in the circularly-polarized case. As a result, a 30 percent decrease in hot electron flux was observed.

Multiple scattering theory for dense plasmas

Dense plasmas occur in stars, giant planets, and in inertial fusion experiments. Accurate modeling of the electronic structure of these plasmas allows for prediction of material properties that can in turn be used to simulate these astrophysical objects and terrestrial experiments. But modeling them remains a challenge. Here we explore the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function (KKR-GF) method for this purpose. We find that it is able to predict equation of state in good agreement with other state-of-the-art methods, where they are accurate and viable. In addition, it is shown that the computational cost does not significantly change with temperature, in contrast with other approaches. Moreover, the method does not use pseudopotentials—core states are calculated self consistently. We conclude that KKR-GF is a very promising method for dense plasma simulation.

Super-resonant four-photon collinear laser frequency multiplication in plasma

Resonant four-photon scattering could nearly double frequencies of intense laser pulses in plasma. However, transverse slippage between pulses presents a technological challenge, while collinear four-photon scattering is forbidden for classical light dispersion in plasma. Nonlinear renormalization of intense laser pulses can enable collinear four-photon resonance. However, such a very intensity-sensitive resonance is difficult to maintain for evolving pulses. Remarkably, there is a lower-dimensionality submanifold of the resonant four-photon manifold where the evolving pulses stay in resonance. Furthermore this could enable an all-optical frequency doubling of mildly relativistic-intense laser pulses in collinear geometry, advantageously free of the transverse slippage challenges.

First Observation of Multiple Transverse Wobbling Bands of Different Kinds in 183 Au

Here, we report the first observation of two wobbling bands in 183 Au, both of which were interpreted as the transverse wobbling (TW) band but with different behavior of their wobbling energies as a function of spin. It increases (decreases) with spin for the positive (negative) parity configuration. The crucial evidence for the wobbling nature of the bands, dominance of the $\textit{E}$2 component in the Δ$\textit{I}$ = 1 transitions between the partner bands, is provided by the simultaneous measurements of directional correlation from the oriented states ratio and the linear polarization of the $\textit{γ}$ rays. Particle rotor model calculations with triaxial deformation reproduce the experimental data well. A value of spin, $I_m$, has been determined for the observed TW bands below which the wobbling energy increases and above which it decreases with spin. The nucleus 183 Au is, so far, the only nucleus in which both the increasing and the decreasing parts are observed and thus gives the experimental evidence of the complete transverse wobbling phenomenon.

Multiple Charge Density Waves and Superconductivity Nucleation at Antiphase Domain Walls in the Nematic Pnictide Ba 1– x Sr x Ni 2 As 2

How superconductivity interacts with charge or nematic order is one of the great unresolved issues at the center of research in quantum materials. Ba 1– x Sr x Ni 2 As 2 (BSNA) is a charge ordered pnictide superconductor recently shown to exhibit a sixfold enhancement of superconductivity due to nematic fluctuations near a quantum phase transition (at $x_c$ = 0.7). The superconductivity is, however, anomalous, with the resistive transition for $0.4 < x < x_c$ occurring at a higher temperature than the specific heat anomaly. Here, using x-ray scattering, we discovered a new charge density wave (CDW) in BSNA in this composition range. The CDWis commensurate with a period of two lattice parameters, and is distinct from the two CDWs previously reported in this material. We argue that the anomalous transport behavior arises from heterogeneous superconductivity nucleating at antiphase domain walls in this CDW. We also present new data on the incommensurate CDW, previously identified as being unidirectional, showing that it is a rotationally symmetric “4$\textit{Q}$” state with $C_4$ symmetry. Our study establishes BSNA as a rare material containing three distinct CDWs, and an exciting test bed for studying coupling between CDW, nematic, and SC orders.

Measurement of the Sixth-Order Cumulant of Net-Proton Multiplicity Distributions in Au + Au Collisions at s NN = 27 , 54.4, and 200 GeV at RHIC

According to first principle Lattice QCD calculations, the transition from quark-gluon plasma to hadronic matter is a smooth crossover in the region µB ≤ Tc. As a result, higher-order cumulants and their ratios are predicted to be negative, C 6 /C 2 < 0, for example. In this paper, we report the first measurement of the midrapidity net-proton C 6 /C 2 from 27, 54.4 and 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. The dependence on collision centrality and kinematic acceptance in (p T, y ) are analyzed. While for 27 and 54.4 GeV collisions the C 6 /C 2 values are close to zero within uncertainties, it is observed that for 200 GeV collisions, the C 6 /C 2 ratio becomes progressively negative from peripheral to central collisions. Transport model calculations without critical dynamics predict values around zero. These observations seem to favor a smooth crossover in the high energy nuclear collisions at RHIC.

Quasiparticle Scattering in a Superconductor near a Nematic Critical Point: Resonance Mode and Multiple Attractive Channels

We analyze the scattering rate for 2D fermions interacting via soft nematic fluctuations. The ground state is an s-wave superconductor, but other pairing channels are almost equally attractive. This strongly alters the scattering rate: At energies beyond the pairing gap Δ, it is renormalized by contributions from all pairing channels. At energies of order Δ, it is determined by the competition between scattering into a gapped continuum and dispersing nematic resonance. The outcome is a “peak-peak-dip-hump” spectrum, similar, but not identical, to the “peak-dip-hump” structure in the cuprates.

Multiple Magnetorotons and Spectral Sum Rules in Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

We study, numerically, the charge neutral excitations (magnetorotons) in fractional quantum Hall systems, concentrating on the two Jain states near quarter filling, ν = 2/7 and ν = 2/9, and the ν = 1/4 Fermi-liquid state itself. In contrast to the ν = 1/3 states and the Jain states near half filling, on each of the two Jain states ν = 2/7 and ν = 2/9 the graviton spectral densities show two, instead of one, magnetoroton peaks. The magnetorotons have spin 2 and have opposite chiralities in the ν = 2/7 state and the same chirality in the ν = 2/9 state. Here, we also provide a numerical verification of a sum rule relating the guiding center spin s¯ with the spectral densities of the stress tensor.
