Local convection characteristics of inline arrangement of Kagome-shaped unit cells in a square duct

Transient liquid crystal thermography experiments have been conducted to determine detailed convective heat transfer coefficients at the endwalls of lattice-frame configurations based on Kagome-shaped unit cells. Kagome unit cells with porosity of 0.88 were arranged in an inline manner, where two such arrangements were studied. In the first arrangement, a total of ten unit cells were placed next to each other along the streamwise direction resulting in a continuous configuration. In the 2nd arrangement, alternate unit cells from the continuous configuration were dropped, resulting in a discrete configuration which featured a total of 5 Kagome unit cells. Due to the asymmetric nature of the strut connections within the unit cell, the convective heat transfer coefficient maps were determined for the two opposite walls where the struts meet the endwalls. Transient liquid crystal experiments were conducted for Reynolds number ranging between 10,000 and 30,000. Here, the study was focused on the developing nature of flow along the streamwise direction and the local convection characteristics for continuous and discrete arrangement of unit cells. For the continuous configuration, the Nusselt number ratios (N u /Nu 0 ) varied between 3.15–3.46 and 2.75–2.89 for the two walls A and B, respectively. For the discrete configuration, convective heat transfer coefficients varied between 2.56–2.71 and 2.09–2.40 for the two walls. Kagome unit cells have the potential to be fabricated through inexpensive manufacturing routes such as wire-woven method and these unit cells find their applications in the areas which require different heat transfer levels on opposite walls.

The effect of local chemical ordering on Frank-Read source activation in a refractory multi-principal element alloy

In this work, we investigate the operation of Frank-Read (FR) sources in a refractory multi-principal element alloy (MPEA). Simulations of discrete dislocation motion in MPEAs is enabled by the development of a phase field dislocation dynamics model that treats the atomic-scale fluctuations in lattice energies across the glide plane, present due to local ordering in the chemical composition within the nominally random MPEA atomic structure. We consider, through simulation, a range of length scales over which ordering occurs, varying from short-range lengths, a few times dislocation core width, to long-range lengths, an order of magnitude longer than the core. Characteristic of this body-centered cubic MPEA, the simulations also include screw/edge character dependence in glide resistance, as informed by atomic scale simulation. The critical stresses to activate the source for the same source size are found to be statistically distributed, as a direct consequence of the underlying variation in lattice energy. Furthermore, analysis of critical state for activating edge and screw FR sources in the MPEA reveals that FR source operation occurs via a two-step mechanism, involving athermal kink-pair formation, unlike the conventional FR source operation in a material with no composition fluctuations. This mechanism lowers the average critical stress required to activate the FR source and causes the statistical dispersion in critical stress to depend on the range of composition ordering. More importantly, it leads to a more severe dependence of source strength on FR source length than predicted by line tension alone.

Persistence of Late Substantial Patient-Reported Symptoms (LAPERS) After Radiochemotherapy Including Image Guided Adaptive Brachytherapy for Locally Advanced Cervical Cancer: A Report From the EMBRACE Study

This report describes the persistence of late substantial treatment-related patient-reported symptoms (LAPERS) in the multi-institutional EMBRACE study on magnetic resonance image guided adaptive brachytherapy in locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC).

Localized Delivery of Cisplatin to Cervical Cancer Improves Its Therapeutic Efficacy and Minimizes Its Side Effect Profile

Cervical cancer represents the fourth most frequent malignancy in the world among women, and mortality has remained stable for the past 4 decades. Intravenous cisplatin with concurrent radiation therapy is the standard-of-care for patients with local and regional cervical cancer. However, cisplatin induces serious dose-limiting systemic toxicities and recurrence frequently occurs. In this study, we aimed to develop an intracervical drug delivery system that allows cisplatin release directly into the tumor and minimize systemic side effects.

Combination of Radiation Therapy and Short-Term Androgen Blockade With Abiraterone Acetate Plus Prednisone for Men With High- and Intermediate-Risk Localized Prostate Cancer

Long-term androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) is the standard of care in combination with radiation therapy (RT) in high-risk prostate cancer (PC), despite substantial toxicity from the resulting hypogonadism. We hypothesized that a combination of more potent but shorter-term androgen inhibition in men with intermediate- or high-risk localized PC would synergize with definitive RT to provide short-term testosterone recovery and improve disease control.

Investigation of Relation of Radiation Therapy Quality With Toxicity and Survival in LAP07 Phase 3 Trial for Locally Advanced Pancreatic Carcinoma

The LAP07 multicenter randomized study assessed whether chemoradiation therapy increases overall survival versus continuation chemotherapy in patients whose locally advanced pancreatic cancer was controlled after 4 months of induction chemotherapy. This analysis investigated whether failure to adhere to radiation therapy (RT) guidelines influenced survival and toxicity.

Impact of Dose-Escalated Chemoradiation on Quality of Life in Patients With Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer: 2-Year Follow-Up of the Randomized RECTAL-BOOST Trial

Dose-escalated chemoradiation (CRT) for locally advanced rectal cancer did not result in higher complete response rates but initiated more tumor regression in the randomized RECTAL-BOOST trial (Clinicaltrials.gov NCT01951521). This study compared patient reported outcomes between patients who received dose-escalated CRT (5 × 3 gray boost + CRT) or standard CRT for 2 years after randomization.

Association of Short-term Patient-reported Outcomes With Long-term Oncologic Outcomes in Localized Prostate Cancer Patients Treated With Radiation Therapy and Androgen Deprivation Therapy in a Randomized Controlled Trial

Both oncologic outcomes and patient-reported outcomes are pivotal in prostate cancer (PCa). However, it remains unknown if there is any association between these 2 outcomes. In this secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial, we investigated the association of short-term changes in patient-reported outcome with long-term event-free survival (EFS) and metastasis-free survival (MFS) in localized PCa.
