Biochemical upgrading of high-protein biomass and grain products

The present invention relates to methods of upgrading biomass to provide useful chemical intermediates, fuels, amino acids, nutrients, etc. In particular examples, the biomass is a by-product of ethanol production and is mainly used as high-protein feed. Described herein are methods for upgrading such biomass, such as by implementing pre-treatment conditions and by employing fermentation conditions including modified organisms.

Grain boundary enhanced UN and U 3 Si 2 pellets with improved oxidation resistance

A method of forming a water resistant boundary on a fissile material for use in a water cooled nuclear reactor is described. The method comprises mixing a powdered fissile material selected from the group consisting of UN and U3Si2 with an additive selected from oxidation resistant materials having a melting or softening point lower than the sintering temperature of the fissile material, pressing the mixed fissile and additive materials into a pellet, sintering the pellet to a temperature greater than the melting point of the additive. Alternatively, if the melting point of the oxidation resistant particles is greater than the sintering temperature of UN or U3Si2, then the oxidation resistant particles can have a particle size distribution less than that of the UN or U3Si2.

HVAC control fine-grained occupancy pattern estimation

A thermal state of a plurality of zones of the building is updated according to a building thermal model and information received from temperature sensors of the building. Predicted occupant counts for an upcoming plurality of time slots for each of the plurality of zones are updated using actual occupancy counts for each of the plurality of zones. A misprediction type distribution for the upcoming plurality of time slots for each of the plurality of zones is updated, the misprediction type distribution indicating misprediction for true negatives, false positives, false negatives, and true positives. A total misprediction cost expectation is updated according to the predicted occupant counts and the misprediction type distribution. HVAC power for each of the plurality of zones is determined to optimize occupant thermal comfort weighted according to the predicted occupant counts while minimizing the total misprediction cost expectation. HVAC operation is controlled per the HVAC power.

Compiler directed fine grained power management

Systems, methods, devices, and computer-implemented instructions for processor power management implemented in a compiler. In some implementations, a characteristic of code is determined. An instruction based on the determined characteristic is inserted into the code. The code and inserted instruction are compiled to generate compiled code. The compiled code is output.

Hardware assisted fine-grained data movement

A processor includes a task scheduling unit and a compute unit coupled to the task scheduling unit. The task scheduling unit performs a task dependency assessment of a task dependency graph and task data requirements that correspond to each task of the plurality of tasks. Based on the task dependency assessment, the task scheduling unit schedules a first task of the plurality of tasks and a second proxy object of a plurality of proxy objects specified by the task data requirements such that a memory transfer of the second proxy object of the plurality of proxy objects occurs while the first task is being executed.

Fine-grained conditional dispatching

Techniques for executing workgroups are provided. The techniques include executing, for a first workgroup of a first kernel dispatch, a workgroup dependency instruction that includes an indication to prioritize execution of a second workgroup of a second kernel dispatch, and in response to the workgroup dependency instruction, dispatching the second workgroup of the second kernel dispatch prior to dispatching a third workgroup of the second kernel dispatch, wherein no workgroup dependency instruction including an indication to prioritize execution of the third workgroup has been executed.

Subgrain geometrically necessary dislocation density mapping in spalled Ta in three dimensions

Here, in this work, the intragranular distributions of the densities of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) generated in a polycrystalline tantalum (Ta) sample loaded in shock compression to spall are investigated. The sample studied is a highly resolved three-dimensional (3D) map of the orientations, grain boundary morphology, and voids across a 0.276mm 3 (with sample dimensions of 688.5µm x 669µm x 600µm) region of the microstructure about the spall plane obtained by TriBeam tomography. We present a formulation for calculating the crystallographic screw and edge character GND densities at a material point within body centered cubic (BCC) crystals when provided any number of potential slip systems or modes. Combining the 3D characterization, GND formulation, and a sample containing ≈ 6000 grains, we sought statistically relevant correlations between GND density per grain with grain size, grain orientation, void formation, and proximity from the spall plane. We show that GND density per grain increases with decreasing distance from the spall plane. Most grains had heterogeneously distributed GND densities but were free of any detectable voids, at least within the ≈ 1.5µm resolution of the characterization technique. It is found that the GND density for most grains is insensitive to grain size and grain orientation. Only the fraction of grains with the highest GND densities tended to have a [001] parallel to shock-direction orientation. Intragranular 3D maps of GNDs reveals that grains that contain voids have high GND density concentrations in the intragranular region immediately surrounding the void. The local intragranular GND mapping also showed voids that are connected to grain boundaries preferred to grow into the grain with the larger size, regardless of orientation.
