Combining the Best of Two Chelating Titans: A Hydroxypyridinone-Decorated Macrocyclic Ligand for Efficient and Concomitant Complexation and Sensitized Luminescence of f-Elements

An ideal chelator for f-elements features rapid kinetics of complexation, high thermodynamic stability, and slow kinetics of dissociation. Here we present the facile synthesis of a macrocyclic ligand bearing four 1-hydroxy-2-pyridinone units linked to a cyclen scaffold that rapidly forms thermodynamically stable complexes with lanthanides (Sm 3+ , Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Dy 3+ ) and a representative late actinide (Cm 3+ ) in aqueous media and concurrently sensitizes them. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy revealed an increase in the Ln/An-O bond lengths following the trend Cm>Eu>Tb and EXAFS data were compatible with time-resolved luminescence studies, which indicated one to two water molecules in the inner metal coordination sphere of Eu(III) and two water molecules for the Cm(III) complex. Spectrofluorimetric ligand competition titrations against DTPA confirmed the high thermodynamic stability of DOTHOPO complexes, with pM values between 19.9(1) and 21.9(2).

Understanding Europium and Terbium Speciation and Ion Pairing in Carbonate Complexes Using Advanced Spectroscopy Techniques

Lanthanide (Ln) elements are critical materials that are typically extracted/mined together. Their separation by solvent extraction from acidic media is well known; however, there are few studies in basic media with carbonate anions. We investigated the complexation of Eu(III) and Tb(III) carbonates as solids and solutions in alkaline K2CO3, wherein we sought to access a Tb(IV) carbonate complex through ozonolysis. L3-edge XANES of Eu and Tb carbonate solids, colorless solutions, and a red-hued Tb solution (obtained by ozonolysis) all showed Ln(III) cations. The absence of evidence for a Tb(IV) complex was confirmed through XAS and EPR analyses, despite the solution exhibiting a deep red color. For solids and solutions, EXAFS results indicate molecular Ln(III)-carbonato anions. In terms of the Eu(III) carbonate coordination number, the coordination does not change upon dissolution of the solid sample. Furthermore, EXAFS for the solutions revealed evidence for the association of potassium cations with the Ln(III)-carbonato anions. Furthermore, this direct observation of contact ion pairing by EXAFS at room temperature is rare. The insights into Ln(III) carbonate complexation and solution speciation afforded by XANES-EXAFS, FT-IR, and EPR provides perspectives that serve as benchmarks for future computational and experimental efforts focused on caustic-side solvent extraction of Ln(III) ions.

Seasonal delay of Sahelian rainfall driven by an east–west contrast in radiative forcing in idealized CESM experiments

Recent studies suggest the observed seasonal delay of rainfall over the Sahel is mainly driven by anthropogenic aerosol forcing, which features a robust east–west contrasting changes in recent decades, with negative and positive top-of-the-atmosphere shortwave radiative forcing in South and East Asia (SA&EA) and in North America and Europe (NA&EU), respectively. Their individual effects on the Sahel rainfall annual cycle remain unclear. Here, by designing idealized sensitivity experiments based on Community Earth System Model (CESM1.2), we show that both negative radiative forcing over SA&EA and positive radiative forcing over NA&EU contribute to the delayed phase and enhanced amplitude of Sahel rainfall annual cycle. To understand the underlying physical processes, both the convective quasi-equilibrium (CQE) and atmospheric energetic frameworks are utilized. Both frameworks can well explain the seasonal delay in the rainfall annual cycle over the Sahel under the regional radiative forcings, with the CQE framework showing stronger explanatory power. Based on the insights from both frameworks, we conducted a moisture budget analysis and found that the negative radiative forcing over SA&EA causes an anomalous low-level anticyclonic circulation, which transports more moisture to the Sahel. As the anomalous anticyclone is stronger in summer and fall compared to spring, rainfall is delayed in the Sahel. Further, under the influence of the positive radiative forcing over NA&EU, more warming in the northern hemisphere causes northward transport of moisture to the northern tropics associated with the cross-equatorial transport of energy. The moisture transport increases relativehumidity over the Sahel and enhances the effective atmospheric heat capacity that delays the seasonal rainfall.

Fast response of global monsoon area and precipitation to regional carbonaceous aerosols

Monsoon exerts a significant social and economic impact on billions of people around the world. Changes in global monsoon (GM) rainfall under global warming have been well studied; however, the understanding of GM connection with regional aerosol emissions is limited. Using an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM), we attempt to quantify the response of global monsoon area and precipitation to the removal of carbonaceous aerosols over North America (AM), North Africa (AF), Europe (EU), and Asia (AS). Response to the emission removal, the global average aerosol optical depths (AOD) are reduced by 2.21%, 1.8%, 1.16%, and 3.8% respectively. Additionally, a southward shift in the GM domain is observed, responding to changes in magnitude and position of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, when carbonaceous aerosols are removed over these regions in the Northern Hemisphere. The percentage departure in the area-averaged GM precipitation is found to be 4-fold in magnitude for the removal of emissions over EU when compared to that of AM and AF. A shrinkage in the GM area is also observed, which is maximum for EU (~-30%) compared to AM and AF (~-25%). The change in GM precipitation and area are found to be the least and opposite in nature for AS emissions. This study provides insight into the regional nature of carbonaceous aerosol effects on global precipitation.

Distribution of rare earth elements in fly ash derived from the combustion of Illinois Basin coals

This study examined rare earth element (REE) trends for Illinois Basin coal-sourced fly ashes, with the goal of understanding the elemental composition and resource potential for various fly ash fractions. Illinois Basin coals have a high volatile C through A bituminous rank with a moderate ash content (slightly>12% ash (dry basis)), about 3% sulfur, and, in general, lower concentrations of hazardous and other trace elements than many Central Appalachian coals. Fly ash from the combustion of Illinois Basin coals tends to have a high Fe 2 O 3 content owing to the amount of pyrite in the feed coals. The rare earth element (REE) concentrations in Illinois Basin coal-sourced fly ashes are less than that for fly ashes from the combustion of Central Appalachian coals. The Upper continental crust-corrected fly ashes show an H-type enrichment, a positive Eu N /Eu N * , and, in some cases, a sharp Gd peak. For comparison, a suite of fly ashes from the combustion of a blend of eastern Kentucky coals had an H-type enrichment, a positive Eu N /Eu N * , but only a minimal Gd peak. In contrast, fly ash from the combustion of the Fire Clay coal, a REE-rich coal, had a negative Eu N /Eu N * and a sharp Gd peak. Finally, these results highlight the importance of feed coal composition on trace element contents of respective combustion fly ash fractions and also the unique REE enrichment patterns of the Illinois Basin fly ashes relative to the better studied fly ashes of eastern Kentucky and Central Appalachia.

Distribution of rare earth elements and other critical elements in beneficiated Pennsylvania anthracites

The Pennsylvania Anthracite Fields are in a complex tectonic and metamorphic terrain, historically hosting one of the largest concentrations of coal mining in the USA. Anthracite mining now largely consists of the surface mining of the pillars remaining from the prime years of underground mining. The geochemical study of the sized coal products and the refuse (largely rock) from three preparation plants (breakers) demonstrates that Principal components analysis (PCA) of select major oxide, minor element, and rare earth elements illustrates some differentiation among the products from the individual plants. The rock samples, with abundant quartz and metamorphic Al-Si minerals and with a lower ash-basis REE concentration than the coals, were distinctly separated from the coal samples on the PCA plots. Plots of Gd N /Gd N * vs. Eu N /Eu N * and Ce N /Ce N * vs. Eu N / Eu N * showed differentiation between the individual suites of coals showed that the refuse samples had distinct REE distributions compared to the associated coals. Further, several minor and trace elements show enrichments in the coal samples. Lithium, with concentrations of up to 314 ppm on an ash basis, is among the most promising of the critical elements, exceeding the enrichment of the REY and Sc.

Pressure-tuning of the electronic and magnetic properties of EuPt 2 Si 2

Using the element and orbital selectivity of x-ray absorption spectroscopy at Eu and Pt L 3 edges we investigate the effects of the lattice contraction, induced by temperature and external pressure, on the magnetic and electronic properties of the EuPt 2 Si 2 system. Our findings point to a clear relationship between the volume and the Eu valence in this material. From XANES experiments as a function of pressure we show that the Europium valence tends to stabilize at 3+ for pressures up to 27 GPa. The XMCD results demonstrate that pressure induced valence change of the Europium ion leads to a suppression of the magnetic ordering of the material. Finally, altogether our results provide direct evidence that Eu-4f /5d electronic hybridization effects underlie the mechanism that regulates the valence and magnetic ordering in this material.

Homogeneous titanium hydroxide yields hydroxyl decorated nanofiber separator with improved electrolyte uptake and device capacitance

Good wettability of separators in batteries and capacitors is crucial for performance. Titanium hydroxide (Ti(OH) x ) has been shown to greatly improve the wettability of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers (NFs). Here, PVDF/Ti(OH) x NFs were evaluated for their potential use as separators. Results show that PVDF NFs incorporated with Ti(OH) x have improved electrolyte uptake (EU) between 550 and 1200 EU% compared to untreated PVDF with less than 100 EU%. Significant improvements in capacitance are seen from capacitors utilizing PVDF/Ti(OH) x NF separators with the best performing PVDF/Ti(OH) x NF at 15 wt% Ti(OH)x with 446.8 mF/cm 2 compared to untreated PVDF NF separator with 262.7 mF/cm 2 .

Evaluation of analytical performance of double pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for the detection of rare earth elements

Double pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (DP-LIBS) in collinear configuration was demonstrated to enhance the signal intensity of three rare earth elements (REEs), Eu, Gd, Pr, and Y (Yttrium is included because of its similar chemical properties and occurrence in similar deposits as REE). Significant enhancement in spectral signals of all elements was observed with an aid of second laser. Two laser pulses of 1064 nm wavelength were employed in collinear geometry on the Pr 2 O 3 , Eu 2 O 3 , Gd 2 O 3 , and Y 2 O 3 pellets to obtain emission spectra. For selected strong emission lines of Eu and Gd signal enhancement was found to be 3 to 7-fold and that for Y and Pr lines was observed to be 3 to 13-fold compared to single-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SP-LIBS). Role of inter-pulse delay between two pulses in DP-LIBS was found to be very crucial. Furthermore, while comparing selected ionic and neutral lines, ionic lines were found to have larger signal enhancement in DP-LIBS at the experimental conditions used in this study.

Exploring the Role of Neutral 4-Amino-1,2,4-triazole in the Formation of Hexanuclear f-Element Hydrolysis Products

Our recent observations of an unexpected Ce(III) hydrolysis product from the reaction of 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) with CeCl 3 ·7H 2 O, [Ce 6 (μ 3 -O) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 2 (μ 3 -Cl) 2 (Cl) 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ]·7H 2 O, the first high-nuclearity lanthanide complex where all Ln atoms are connected pairwise through 12 N-donor ligands or 12 neutral bridging ligands of any type, prompted us to explore the utility of this ligand in trapping additional f-element examples. Reactions of LnCl 3 ·6H 2 O (Ln = Nd, Eu, Ho) with a large excess of 4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz (20 equiv) and with the addition of small amounts of water to help solubilize the metal salts led to the isolation of the unique hydrolysis products [Nd 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ][Cl 4 ]·2H 2 O, [Eu 6 (μ 6 -Cl) 0.23 (μ 3 -O 0.77 ) 4 (μ 3 -O) 2.6 (μ 3 -Cl) 0.4 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ], and [Ho 6 (μ 6 -Cl) 0.21 (μ 3 -O 0.79 ) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 2 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ][Cl] 3.4 . Here, we also report a Ce(III) analogue prepared in glassware contaminated with Pb(OAc) 2 , namely, [Ce 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 (BrPbBr 5 )(μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 11.5 (OH 2 ) 6 ][Pb 0.84 Br 4.2 ][Br] 3.8 ·2(4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz)·3.6H 2 O. The Nd(III) complex is the structurally most ordered with a clear [Nd 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 ] cluster core, while the Eu(III) and Ho(III) compounds contain partial occupancy of a μ 6 position and thus result in an incomplete Ln 6 O 9 cluster core formation. The crystallographic results suggest that the 4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz ligand brings Ln(III) ions together, followed by the formation of an Ln 6 O 8 or Ln 6 O 9 core with whatever remaining anions or ligands can be incorporated. Given the complexity of the hydrolysis products of nuclear waste, we expect to continue to find a myriad of closely related complex structures of these types for the f-elements.

Spatially and Temporally Explicit Life Cycle Environmental Impacts of Soybean Production in the U.S. Midwest

Quantifying the spatially and temporally explicit life cycle environmental impacts of crop production is critical for designing sustainable supply chains for biofuel and animal sectors. This study assessed life cycle environmental impacts of soybean production in around 1000 Midwest counties over 9 years. A combination of Environmental Policy Integrated Climate model and process-based life cycle assessment model was used to estimate the spatially and temporally explicit life cycle global warming (GW), eutrophication (EU) and acidification (AD) impacts. Sequentially, a machine learning approach was applied to identify the top influential factors among soil, climate and farming practices for spatially and temporally explicit life cycle environmental impacts. The results indicated that significant variations existed in life cycle environmental impacts among counties and across years. Life cycle GW impacts ranged from -11.4 to 22.0 kg CO2-eq. kg soybean-1, whereas life cycle EU and AD impacts varied by a factor of 302 and 44, respectively. Nitrogen application rates, temperature in March and soil texture were the top influencing factors for the spatial-temporal variations in life cycle GW impacts. In contrast, soil organic content and nitrogen application rate were the top influencing factors for the spatial-temporal variations in life cycle EU and AD impacts.

Extraction, Characterization, and Stability Studies of Bistriazinyl-Derived Carboxylic Acids

Separation of An(III) and Ln(III) ions will benefit the recycling of used nuclear fuel (UNF). For this purpose, many ligands have been tested over the years, and several separation processes have been successfully demonstrated on the laboratory scale. Current research aims at the development of new ligands that are built only with carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen (CHON), as they can be incinerated completely without secondary waste production. Here, we tested a new class of water-soluble ligands, the bistriazinyl-octa-carboxylic acids. One member, in particular, 2,6-bis-[5,6-di(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)-1,2,4- triazin-3-yl]-pyridine (BTPOA), was found to be suitable for the selective separation of Am(III) and Cm(III) ions from Ln(III) ions and may act as a CHON alternative to its sulfonated analogue (SO 3 -Ph-BTP). BTPOA exhibited good extraction results and a high selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III) ions. This ligand’s complexation of metal ions was further studied using potentiometric spectroscopy, as well as time-resolved laser-induced spectroscopy with Cm(III) and Eu(III) in aqueous HClO 4 and HNO 3 media. Conditional stability constants of each formed species were determined. In the HClO 4 system, Cm(III) formed three species (1:1, 1:2, and 1:3) through the stepwise addition of a single BTPOA molecule. On the other hand, in HNO 3 , Cm(III) formed two 1:2 complexes and one 1:3 complex, while the stepwise formation of three species was observed for Eu(III). The stability constants are comparable to the values for SO 3 -Ph-BTP. The radiolytic behavior of BTPOA was also investigated using electron pulse irradiation measurements to determine absolute rate coefficients (k) under ambient temperature conditions for the reaction of BTPOA with typical UNF reprocessing radical radiolysis products the hydrated electron (e aq − , k = (1.60 ± 0.02) × 10 10 M −1 s −1 ), the hydrogen atom (H • , k = (2.17 ± 0.03) × 10 9 M −1 s −1 ), and hydroxyl ( • OH, k = (6.95 ± 0.06) × 10 9 M −1 s −1 ) and nitrate (NO 3 • , k = (0.37 ± 0.02) × 10 7 M −1 s−1) radicals. These rate coefficients indicate that the radiolytic longevity of BTPOA should increase with HNO 3 concentration, owing to the consumption of e aq − /H • , by nitrate anions, and the replacement of • OH by the less reactive NO 3 • .
