International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment, 14th, San Jose, Costa Rica, April 23-30, 1980, Proceedings. Volumes 1, 2 & 3

Papers are presented on remote sensing applications in resource monitoring and management, data classification and modeling procedures, and the use of remote sensing techniques in developing nations. The subjects of land use/land cover, soil mapping, crop identification, mapping of geological resources, renewable resource analysis, and oceanographic applications are discussed. Papers from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, the Syrian Arab Republic, the People's Republic of China, the Phillipines, Italy, Upper Volta and the United States are included.

The results of initial analysis of OSTA-1/Ocean Color Experiment (OCE) imagery

Ocean view images from the Ocean Color Experiment (OCE) were produced at three widely separated locations on the Earth. Digital computer enhancement and band ratioing techniques were applied to radiometrically corrected OCE spectral data to emphasize patterns of chlorophyll distribution and, in one shallow, clear water case, bottom topography. The chlorophyll pattern in the Yellow Sea between China and Korea was evident in a scene produced from Shuttle Orbit 24. The effects of the discharge from the Yangtze and other rivers were also observed. Two scenes from orbits 30 and 32 revealed the movement of patches of plankton in the Gulf of Cadiz. Geometrical corrections to these images permitted the existing ocean current velocities in the vicinity to be deduced. The variability in water depth over the Grand Bahama Bank was estimated by using the blue-green OCE channel. The very clear water conditions in the area caused bottom reflected sunlight to produce a sensor signal which was related inversely to the depth of the water.

Influence of the Tibetian Plateau on cumulative and diurnal changes of weather and climate in summer

An investigation of the dynamic and thermodynamic influences of the Tibetian Plateau on the monsoon circulation in southeastern Asia and China is reported. A five-day primitive equation numerical model was used to simulate the influences of the high mountains in the 0-180 deg E and 25-55 deg N region on a typical July day. The equations predicted horizontal motion, heat, the water vapor mixing ratio, and surface pressure. Consideration was given to solar and longwave radiation and the release of latent heat by deep cumulus clouds. A net warming over the Plateau as opposed to the surrounding areas was found to lead to vertical air ascent and the establishment of strong summer monsoon circulation to the south. It is noted that the grid was too coarse to adequately describe the distribution of precipitation on the steep mountains.

Combining land use data acquired from Landsat with soil map data

A method currently used to derive agrophysical units (APUs), i.e., geographical areas having definable/comparable agronomic and physical parameters which reflect a range in agricultural use and management, is discussed with reference to results obtained for South Dakota and an area in China. The method consists of combining agricultural land use data acquired from Landsat with soil map data. The resulting map units are soil associations characterized by cropland use intensity, and they can be used to identify major cropland areas and to develop a rating reflecting the relative potential of the soils in the delineated area for crop production, as well as to update small-scale soil maps.

Initial analysis of OSTA-1 ocean color experiment imagery

NASA's Ocean Color Experiment (OCE) was designed to map ocean features with an eight-channel scanning radiometer installed on the second flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Digital computer enhancement and band-ratio techniques were applied to radiometrically corrected spectral data in order to emphasize chlorophyll distribution patterns. Such a pattern was evident in the Yellow Sea between Korea and China, and the effects of discharge from the Yangtze and other rivers were also observed. Two scenes, from orbits 30 and 32, revealed the movement of plankton patches in the Gulf of Cadiz. Geometric correction of the images permitted ocean current velocities to be deduced, and water depth variability over the Grand Bahama Bank was estimated by means of OCE's blue-green channel. Bottom-reflected sunlight produced a sensor signal that was inversely related to water depth.

An analysis of periodicities in the 1470 to 1974 Beijing precipitation record

An analyis of a time series consisting of an annual index of dryness/wetness for the years 1470 to 1974 in Beijing, China is presented. Its power spectrum shows that dominant cycles occur with long periods of the order of 80 years. Cycles with periods of 11 and 22 years are weak or non-existent, but a significant signal at 18.7 years (which is also the period of a component of the lunar tide generating force) is detected. The long term variations in Beijing precipitation appear to lag long term (Gleissberg) variations in solar activity by nearly 75 years. A pattern which spans nearly 150 years in the Beijing record is found to be repeated with notable similarity.

Short-term planetary-scale interactions over the tropics and midlatitudes. II - Winter-MONEX period

The FGGE/winter-Monex wind data from 850 and 200 mb are used to analyze the short-term teleconnections over the tropical and midlatitude Pacific and monsoonal surges in the winter of 1978-79. The data were taken twice a day, and included the total wind field, the computed rotational and divergent winds, the velocity potential, and the streamfunction. Cold surges were identified from shipboard data over the South China Sea and characterized an increase in the surface northerly wind and a surface pressure differential between Hong Kong and 30 deg N, 115 deg E. Midlatitude baroclinic disturbances triggered the cold surges, which displayed intensities dependent on the strength of the midlatitude anticyclogenesis and the intensity of the East Asia local Hadley cell. Fluctuations in the 200 mb jet streak over Japan indicated changes in eddy behavior over the North Pacific and the intensity of the East Asia local Hadley cell circulation and tropical convection. It was concluded that midlatitude synoptic systems could force equatorial convection that produces remote midlatitude responses.

Periodicities in the occurrence of aurora as indicators of solar variability

A compilation of records of the aurora observed in China from the Time of the Legends (2000 - 3000 B.C.) to the mid-18th century has been used to infer the frequencies and strengths of solar activity prior to modern times. A merging of this analysis with auroral and solar activity patterns during the last 200 years provides basically continuous information about solar activity during the last 2000 years. The results show periodicities in solar activity that contain average components with a long period (approx. 412 years), three middle periods (approx. 38 years, approx. 77 years, and approx. 130 years), and the well known short period (approx. 11 years).

SEASAT altimetry for surface height of inland seas

The capability of spaceborne altimetry to record the level, or monitor changes in the level, of inland seas was assessed. SEASAT altimetry data from Lake Baikal in Siberia; the Caspian, Black, and Aral Seas in the southern Soviet Union; the Great Salt Lake in the United States; lakes and reservoirs in northwestern and central China; and snow cover in northwestern India and on the Tibetan Plateau were examined.

Microtektite discovered in Beijing

The discovery, testing, and chemical composition of tiny vitreous spheres are discussed. These spheres, found in China, are thought to be microtektites. A method for determining the age of these spheres is mentioned.

Evaluation results of the 700 deg C Chinese strain gauges

Gauges fabricated from specially developed Fe-Cr-Al-V-Ti-Y alloy wire in the Republic of China were evaluated for use in static strain measurement of hot gas turbine engines. Gauge factor variation with temperature, apparent strain, and drift were included. Results of gauge factor versus temperature tests show gauge factor decreasing with increasing temperature. The average slope is -3-1/2 percent/100 K, with an uncertainty band of + or - 8 percent. Values of room temperature gauge factor for the Chinese and Kanthal A-1 gauges averaged 2.73 and 2.12, respectively. The room temperature gauge factor of the Chinese gauges was specified to be 2.62. The apparent strain data for both the Chinese alloy and Kanthal A-1 showed large cycle to cycle nonrepeatability. All apparent strain curves had a similar S-shape, first going negative and then rising to positive value with increasing temperatures. The mean curve for the Chinese gauges between room temperature and 100 K had a total apparent strain of 1500 microstrain. The equivalent value for Kanthal A-1 was about 9000 microstrain. Drift tests at 950 K for 50 hr show an average drift rate of about -9 microstrain/hr. Short-term (1 hr) rates are higher, averaging about -40 microstrain for the first hour. In the temperature range 700 to 870 K, however, short-term drift rates can be as high as 1700 microstrain for the first hour. Therefore, static strain measurements in this temperature range should be avoided.

Observation of hard X-rays from the Crab pulsar and A0535+26

The Crab pulsar PSR0531+21 was observed in a balloon flight from the Xianghe Balloon Station (China). Data were obtained in the range 20 to 200 keV with a poswish hard X-ray telescope which comprised a 150 sq cm primary crystal of 5 mm thick CsI(T1) which actively shielded the lower 2 pi steradians by a 5 cm thick NaI(T1) crystal. The scintillation pulses originating in CsI and NaI crystals are distinguished by pulse shape discrimination. The telescope has a field of view of approximately 4 deg H psi H pi determined by graded shield and collimator. The effective geometric area of the detector is 116 sq cm. It is noted that when folding a data flow on a long period interference from the data acquisition, transmission and recording system considerably affect the result.

Remote sensing of severe convective storms over Qinghai-Xizang Plateau

The American satellite, GOES-1 was moved to the Indian Ocean at 58 deg E during the First GARP Global Experiment (FGGE). The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau significantly affects the initiation and development of heavy rainfall and severe storms in China, just as the Rocky Mountains influence the local storms in the United States. Satelite remote sensing of short-lived, meso-scale convective storms is particularly important for covering a huge area of a high elevation with a low population density, such as the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Results of this study show that a high growth rate of the convective clouds, followed by a rapid collapse of the cloud top, is associated with heavy rainfall in the area. The tops of the convective clouds developed over the Plateau lie between the altitudes of the two tropopauses, while the tops of convective clouds associated with severe storms in the United States usually extend much above the tropopause.

A review of electric propulsion systems and mission applications

The satisfaction of growing demands for access to space resources will require new developments related to advanced propulsion and power technologies. A key technology in this context is concerned with the utilization of electric propulsion. A brief review of the current state of development of electric propulsion systems on an international basis is provided, taking into account advances in the USSR, the U.S., Japan, West Germany, China and Brazil. The present investigation, however, is mainly concerned with the U.S. program. The three basic types of electric thrusters are considered along with the intrinsic differences between chemical and electric propulsion, the resistojet, the augmented hydrazine thruster, the arcjet, the ion auxiliary propulsion system flight test, the pulsed plasma thruster, magnetoplasmadynamic propulsion, a pulsed inductive thruster, and rail accelerators. Attention is also given to the applications of electric propulsion.

Rift basins - Origin, history, and distribution

Rifts are elongate depressions overlying places where the lithosphere has ruptured in extension. Where filled with sediment they may contain exploitable quantities of oil and gas. Because rits form in a variety of tectonic settings, it is helpful to define the particular tectonic environment in which a specific rift or set of rifts has developed. A useful approach has been to relate that environment to the Wilson Cycle of the opening and the closing of oceans. This appreciation of tectonic setting can help in better understanding of the depositional, structural and thermal history of individual rift systems. The global distribution of rifts can also be related to tectonic environment. For example, rifts associated with continental rupture at a temporary still-stand of a continent over the mantle convective system (rifts like those active in East Africa today) can be distinguished from those associated with continental collision (rifts like the Cenozoic rifts of China).

Other cryogenic wind-tunnel projects

Following the development of the cryogenic wind tunnel at the NASA Langley Research Center in 1972, a large number of cryogenic wind-tunnel projects have been undertaken at various research establishments around the world. Described in this lecture are cryogenic wind-tunnel projects in China (Chinese Aeronautical Research and Development Center), England (College of Aeronautics at Cranfield, Royal Aircraft Establishment - Bedford, and University of Southampton), Japan (National Aerospace Laboratory, University of Tsukuba, and National Defense Academy), Sweden (Rollab), and the United States (Douglas Aircraft Co., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and NASA Langley).

Surface energy fluxes in complex terrain

The emphasis of the 1985 NASA project activity was on field measurements of wind data and heat balance data. Initiatives included a 19 station mountaintop monitoring program, testing and refining the surface flux monitoring systems and packing and shipping equipment to the People's Republic of China in preparation for the 1986 Tibet Experiment. Other work included more extensive analyses of the 1984 Gobi Desert and Rocky Mountain observations plus some preliminary analyses of the 1985 mountaintop network data. Details of our field efforts are summarized and results of our data analyses are presented.
