Nonlinear inductive response of pinned superconducting vortices in artificial pinning sites

Using the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, we simulate the inductive responses of a variety of thin-film systems containing patterned antidots with different sizes and shapes. The results for all shapes show that the kinetic inductance diverges as the applied current approaches a critical current that is below the BCS depairing current. In conclusion, exploiting the similarity of the observed current-voltage behavior to that of Josephson junctions, we obtain an empirical equation that well fits the inductivity curve as a function of the applied current.

Dynamic defect as nonradiative recombination center in semiconductors

We present a theory of nonradiative recombination (NRR) with an emphasis on the so far little-explored dynamic effect in the process. Here, we show that it can significantly enhance the NRR rate over that of a static midgap level as suggested by the Shockley-Read-Hall theory, whereby offering an alternative explanation to the long-lasting discrepancy between theory and experiment for semiconductors. As an illustration, we show that dynamic NRR can take place at the DX center in Si-doped GaAs which, combined with a modified ABC model at high carrier-density limit, makes it possible to verify the theory directly by experiment.

Band gap renormalization, carrier mobilities, and the electron-phonon self-energy in crystalline naphthalene

Organic molecular crystals are expected to feature appreciable electron-phonon interactions that influence their electronic properties at zero and finite temperature. Here, we report first-principles calculations and an analysis of the electron-phonon self-energy in naphthalene crystals. We compute the zero-point renormalization and temperature dependence of the fundamental band gap, and the resulting scattering lifetimes of electronic states near the valence- and conduction-band edges employing density functional theory. Further, our calculated phonon renormalization of the GW-corrected quasiparticle band structure predicts a fundamental band gap of 5 eV for naphthalene at room temperature, in good agreement with experiments. From our calculated phonon-induced electron lifetimes, we obtain the temperature-dependent mobilities of electrons and holes in good agreement with experimental measurements at room temperature. Finally, we show that an approximate energy self-consistent computational scheme for the electron-phonon self-energy leads to the prediction of strong satellite bands in the electronic band structure. We find that a single calculation of the self-energy can reproduce the self-consistent results of the band gap renormalization and electrical mobilities for naphthalene, provided that the on-the-mass-shell approximation is used, i.e., if the self-energy is evaluated at the bare eigenvalues.

Field-induced transitions in the Kitaev material α - RuCl 3 probed by thermal expansion and magnetostriction

High-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements were performed on single crystals of α - RuCl 3 in magnetic fields applied parallel to the Ru-Ru bonds. The length changes were measured in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Here, our data show clear thermodynamic characteristics for the field-induced phase transition at the critical field μ 0 H c 1 = 7.8 ( 2 ) T where the antiferromagnetic zigzag order is suppressed. At higher fields, a kink in the magnetostriction coefficient signals an additional transition or crossover around μ 0 H c 2 ≈ 11 T . The extracted Grüneisen ratio shows typical hallmarks for quantum criticality near H c 1 but also displays anomalous behavior above H c 1 . We compare our experimental data with spin-wave calculations employing a minimal Kitaev-Heisenberg model in the semiclassical limit. Most of the salient features are in agreement with each other, however, the peculiar features in the region above H c 1 cannot be accounted for in our semiclassical modeling and hence suggest a genuine quantum nature. We construct a phase diagram for α - RuCl 3 in a magnetic field along the Ru-Ru bonds, displaying a zigzag ordered state below H c 1 , a quantum paramagnetic regime between H c 1 and H c 2 , and a semiclassical partially polarized state above H c 2 .

EXAFS investigation of the local structure in URu 2-x Fe x Si 2 : Evidence for distortions below 100 K

X-ray absorption measurements at the U L III , Ru K , and Fe K edges are reported for the hidden order (HO) material URu 2 - x Fe x Si 2 ( x = 0 , 0.05, 0.08, 0.10, 0.12, 0.15, and 0.20) as a function of x and temperature T . Furthermore, when Fe is substituted for Ru, the local structure about Fe shrinks slightly and the first neighbor Fe-Si bond length decreases by ≈ 0.05 Å . More importantly excess disorder is observed below 80–100 K (the coherence temperature T * ) in plots of the Debye-Waller factor σ 2 ( σ is the width of the pair distribution function); at low T the data deviate from the usual Einstein or correlated-Debye model plots. This excess disorder is most prominent for the Ru-Si bond, and σ 2 actually increases below 80 K. These results suggest a local orthorhombic distortion with B 1 g -like symmetry that develops below 80–100 K. A model that describes these local distortions is presented, and discussed in terms of other measurements that indicate a breaking of fourfold symmetry at low T . In addition, the square root of the difference between σ 2 ( T ) for the Ru-Si pair and a Debye fit to these data serves as an order parameter for this orthorhombic distortion, in the temperature range below 100 K. This quantity is a length related to a - b , the difference between the a and b lattice constants in the orthorhombic phase, and provides a connection between this distortion and T * . X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements also show that there are no changes in the edge positions down to 0.1 eV for any edge as a function of x , for T in the HO regime.

Enhancing superconductivity of Y 5 Rh 6 Sn 18 by atomic disorder

Here, we investigate the effect of enhancement of superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ by nonmagnetic atom disorder in the filled skutterudite-related tetragonal Y 5 Rh 6 Sn 18 compound doped with Ca. We documented experimentally that Y 5 Rh 6 Sn 18 and its Ca-doped alloys are electronically inhomogeneous at the nanoscale, when Ca content is smaller than ~1.5 in the Y 5– x Ca x Rh 6 Sn 18 system, while for $\textit{x}$ ≥ 1.5 much stronger chemical phase inhomogeneity is observed with an about 20% volume fraction of the second 3:4:13 cubic phase, which we interpret as a fluctuation of stoichiometry within the bulk sample. Then the enhancement of $T_c$ vs $\textit{x}$ could be modeled by a mechanism proposed in recent theoretical reports for increasing the mean-field transition temperature $T_c$ in the presence of nonmagnetic disorder. The increase in disorder with doping increases the sample inhomogeneity and causes a systematic increase in $T_c$, while for two-phase $\textit{x}$ ≥ 1.5 samples the critical temperature $T^{\star}_c ≈ 2 × T_c$ rapidly increases. Based on band structure calculations performed under pressure, we demonstrate how the change in density of states would affect $T_c$ of Y 5 Rh 6 Sn 18 . We obtained the Grüneisen parameter $γ_G$ larger for the inhomogeneous phase with respect to $γ_G$ of the bulk $T_c$ phase and attribute the enhancement of $T_c$ to larger stiffening of the high-temperature $T^{\star}_c$ phase.

Meta-GGA performance in solids at almost GGA cost

A recent modification, r 2 SCAN, of the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-generalized gradient approximation (GGA) exchange-correlation functional mostly eliminates numerical instabilities and attendant integration grid sensitivities exhibited by SCAN. Here, we show that the successful deorbitalization of SCAN to SCAN-L (SCAN with density Laplacian dependence) carries over directly to yield r 2 SCAN-L. A major benefit is that the high iteration counts that hindered the use of SCAN-L are eliminated in r 2 SCAN-L. It therefore is a computationally much faster meta-GGA than its orbital-dependent antecedent. In this work, validation data for molecular heats of formation, bond lengths, and vibration frequencies (G3/99X, T96-R, and T82-F test sets, respectively) and on lattice constants, and cohesive energies (for 55 solids) and bulk moduli (for 40 solids) are provided. In addition, we show that the overmagnetization of bcc Fe, hcp Co, and fcc Ni persists in r 2 SCAN but does not appear in r 2 SCAN-L. Distinct from SCAN, both r 2 SCAN and r 2 SCAN-L give the correct nonmagnetic ground state for bcc V.

Far-infrared absorption of undoped and Br-doped carbon nanofiber powder in stacked-cup cone configuration

In this study, we performed room-temperature far-infrared (40–650cm –1 ) transmission measurements on undoped and bromine-doped powder samples of carbon nanofibers in stacked-cup cone geometry. The transmission spectra show enhanced transmittance after bromine doping and all spectra were fit to a Drude-Lorentz (DL) model. A decreased metallic conductivity along with a redshift of the lowest semiconducting gap was found with doped samples. A significant decrease in the scattering rate upon heavy doping has been qualitatively explained as partial ordering of intercalated dopant ions. Absorption spectra were derived from the transmission spectra under the assumption of nondispersive reflectance and subsequently compared with DL-model-derived spectra. The free-carrier density of the n -type powder and the electronic mean free path were estimated and compared with reported values for single-walled nanotubes and pyrolytic graphite.

Temperature-dependent phonon lifetimes and thermal conductivity of silicon by inelastic neutron scattering and ab initio calculations

In this paper, inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal of silicon was performed at temperatures from 100 to 1500 K. These experimental data were reduced to obtain phonon spectral intensity at all wave vectors $\overset{→}{Q}$ and frequencies ω in the first Brillouin zone. Thermal broadenings of the phonon peaks were obtained by fitting and by calculating with an iterative ab initio method that uses thermal atom displacements on an ensemble of superlattices. Agreement between the calculated and experimental broadenings was good, with possible discrepancies at the highest temperatures. Distributions of phonon widths versus phonon energy had similar shapes for computation and experiment. These distributions grew with temperature but maintained similar shapes. Parameters from the ab initio calculations were used to obtain the thermal conductivity from the Boltzmann transport equation, which was in good agreement with experimental data. Despite the high group velocities of longitudinal acoustic phonons, their shorter lifetimes reduced their contribution to the thermal conductivity, which was dominated by transverse acoustic modes.

Bulk and element-specific magnetism of medium-entropy and high-entropy Cantor-Wu alloys

Magnetic Compton scattering, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy, and bulk magnetometry measurements are performed on a set of medium- (NiFeCo and NiFeCoCr) and high-entropy (NiFeCoCrPd and NiFeCoCrMn) Cantor-Wu alloys. The bulk spin momentum densities determined by magnetic Compton scattering are remarkably isotropic, and this is a consequence of the smearing of the electronic structure by disorder scattering of the electron quasiparticles. Nonzero x-ray magnetic circular dichroism signals are observed for every element in every alloy indicating differences in the populations of the majority and minority spin states implying finite magnetic moments. When Cr is included in the solid solution, the Cr spin moment is unambiguously antiparallel to the total magnetic moment, while a vanishingly small magnetic moment is observed for Mn, despite calculations indicating a large moment. Some significant discrepancies are observed between the experimental bulk and surface magnetic moments. Furthermore, despite the lack of quantitative agreement, the element-specific surface magnetic moments seem to be qualitatively reasonable.

Mott localization in the van der Waals crystal CrI 3 : A GGA+DMFT study

Using the generalized gradient approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (GGA+DMFT) we confirm the importance of multi-orbital dynamical correlations in determining the paramagnetic insulating state of CrI 3 . Furthermore, while the ferromagnetic phase reveals weak electronic correlation effects due to strong spin-orbital polarization, the Mott insulating state of paramagnetic CrI 3 crystal is shown to be driven by the interplay between orbital-dependent one-electron lineshape and multi-orbital electronic interactions. To probe the paramagnetic Mott insulating state we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements for the two structural phases of CrI 3 . Our study is relevant to understanding the orbital-selective electronic structure reconstruction of Mott insulators and should be applicable to other van der Waals bonded materials from bulk to the ultrathin limit.

Magnetic excitations affected by spin-lattice coupling in the S=3/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ag 2 CrO 2

Ag 2 CrO 2 is an S=3/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet in which long-range magnetic order with a fivefold magnetic unit cell appears below the transition temperature (T N ) of 24 K. The long-range magnetic order is accompanied by a structural transition. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to investigate the magnetic interactions, anisotropy, and correlations in this material. Above T N , diffuse scattering originating from the short-ranged magnetic correlations consistent with a 120° structure was observed. Here, the magnetic excitations below T N were reproduced reasonably well using a linear spin-wave model with further-neighbor interactions and easy-axis anisotropy, which are predicted to be due to a previously proposed spin-lattice coupling.

Temperature evolution of the phonon dynamics in the Kitaev spin liquid

In this work, we present a study of the phonon dynamics in the honeycomb Kitaev spin model at finite temperatures. We show that the fractionalized spin excitations of the Kitaev spin liquid, the itinerant Majorana fermions, and static Z 2 fluxes have distinct effects on the phonon dynamics, which makes the phonon dynamics a promising tool for exploring the Kitaev spin liquid candidate materials. In particular, we focus on the signature of the fractionalized excitations in the thermodynamic behavior of the sound attenuation and the phonon Hall viscosity: the former describes the phonon decay into the fractionalized excitations, and the latter is the leading order time-reversal symmetry breaking effect on the acoustic phonon. We find that the angular dependence of the attenuation coefficient and its magnitude is modified by the thermal excitation of the Z 2 fluxes. The strength of this effect strongly depends on the relative magnitude of the sound velocity and the Fermi velocity characterizing the low-energy Majorana fermions. We also show that the Hall viscosity is strongly suppressed by the increase of the density of the Z 2 fluxes at finite temperatures. All these observations reflect the effects of the emergent disorder on the Majorana fermions introduced by the Z 2 fluxes. Our analysis is based on the complementary analytical calculations in the low-temperature zero-flux sector, and numerical calculations in the inhomogeneous flux sectors at intermediate and high temperatures with stratified Monte Carlo (strMC) method.

Electronic structure of rhombohedral Cr X 3 ( X = Br, Cl, I) van der Waals crystals

We perform a comprehensive analysis of both the chemical and correlated electronic structure reconstruction of rhombohedral Cr X 3 (X = Br, Cl, I) van der Waals bulk crystals. Using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus dynamical mean-field theory we explicitly demonstrate the importance of local dynamical correlations for a consistent understanding of emergent Kondo quasiparticles and Mott localized electronic states, showing the interplay between material-dependent one-electron GGA line-shape and multiorbital electronic interactions. To probe the correlated paramagnetic electronic state we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements for CrCl 3 and CrBr 3 bulk crystals. Furthermore, our correlated many-body study is relevant to understanding the electronic structure reconstruction of paramagnetic Cr-trihalide crystals and should be widely applicable to other van der Waals magnetic materials.

Timescales of excited state relaxation in α–RuCl 3 observed by time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy

The nonequilibrium properties of strongly correlated materials present a target in the search for new phases of matter. It is important to observe the types of excitations that exist in these materials and their associated relaxation dynamics. We have studied the photoexcitations in a spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator α–RuCl 3 using time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy and transient reflection spectroscopy. We find that photoexcited carriers (doublons) in the upper Hubbard band rapidly relax to Mott-Hubbard excitons on a timescale of less than 200 fs. Subsequently, further relaxation of these lower-energy quasiparticles occurs with an energy-dependent time constant of that ranges from 370 to 600 fs due to exciton cooling. The population of Mott-Hubbard excitons persists for timescales up to several microseconds.

Local structure of Mott insulating iron oxychalcogenides La 2 O 2 Fe 2 OM2(M=S,Se)

Here, we describe the local structural properties of the iron oxychalcogenides, La 2 O 2 Fe 2 OM 2 (M=S,Se), by using pair distribution function analysis applied to total scattering data. Our results from neutron powder diffraction show that M = S and Se possess similar nuclear structures at low and room temperatures. The local crystal structures were studied by investigating deviations in atomic positions and the extent of the formation of orthorhombicity. Analysis of the total scattering data suggests that buckling of the Fe 2 O plane occurs below 100 K. The buckling may occur concomitantly with a change in octahedral height. Furthermore, within a typical range of 1-2 nm, we observed a short-range orthorhombiclike structure suggestive of nematic fluctuations in both of these materials.

Non-Loudon-Fleury Raman scattering in spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators

In this work we revisit the theory of magnetic Raman scattering in Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, with a major focus on Kitaev materials. We show that Kitaev materials with bond-anisotropic interactions are generally expected to show both one- and two-magnon responses. It is further shown that, in order to obtain the correct leading contributions to the Raman vertex operator R, one must take into account the precise, photon-assisted microscopic hopping processes of the electrons and that, in systems with multiple hopping paths, R contains terms beyond those appearing in the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory. Most saliently, a numerical implementation of the revised formalism to the case of the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb Kitaev material β– Li 2 Ir O 3 reveals that the non-Loudon-Fleury scattering terms actually dominate the Raman intensity. In addition, they induce a qualitative modification of the polarization dependence, including, e.g., the emergence of a sharp one-magnon peak at low energies, which is not expected in the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory. This peak is shown to arise from microscopic photon-assisted tunneling processes that are of similar type with the ones leading to the symmetric off-diagonal interaction Γ (known to be present in many Kitaev materials), but take the form of a bond-directional magnetic dipole term in the Raman vertex. These results are expected to apply across all Kitaev materials and mark a drastic change of paradigm for the understanding of Raman scattering in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and multiple exchange paths.
