Effects of prolonged exposure to pure oxygen on human performance

In view of the pure oxygen atmosphere selected for Project Mercury, and in anticipation of subsequent manned space missions of increasing duration, it was apparent that there was a need to obtain more extensive physiological data on the prolonged effects of pure oxygen environments on the crews. This study, conducted by Republic Aviation Corporation under Contract NASR-92, was initiated in collaboration with General Charles Roadman, USAF (MC), Director of Aerospace Medicine (formerly the Office of Life Sciences, NASA Headquarters), and his staff in an effort to provide a greater breadth of scientific data on the prolonged effects of such an environment on human performance. Although the 5 psi environment of Project Mercury was the focal point of the study, a broader appraisal of the effects of pure oxygen in the absence of nitrogen was attempted by including studies at 7.4 psi and 3.8 psi in addition to a control group at sea level atmospheric conditions. After award of the contract, the technical monitoring of the study was provided by the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas, where Mr. Edward Michel served as monitor and coordinator for these and related studies subsequently established in laboratories of the U.S. Navy and U. S. Air Force.

Body-fixed, Three-Axis Reference System Study: Phase II Final Report

This Phase II Body-Fixed, Three-Axis Reference System Study Final Report is the result of a follow-on contract awarded by NASAIMSFC to TRW Systems in April 1966, under Contract No, NASS-20209. of the Phase I1 Study was to refine and supplement the strapdown inertial ’ reference assembly (SIRA), software, airborne computer, and alignment analyses performed during Phase I of the same contract. The purpose Specifically, the Phase I results in many areas were those which could be achieved using simplifying assumptions (linearization) and hand analyses. It was the purpose of the Phase I1 studies to investigate the validity of the Phase I results by means of more sophisticated computer simulations, in which no simplifying assumptions were made, for each of the areas analyzed. The Phase 11 analyses were directed, therefore, at confirming the analytical feasibility asserted by the Phase I results.

Space Shuttle orbiter and subsystems.

Considerable progress has been made in designing the Space Shuttle orbiter and defining its subsystems since the development contract was awarded by NASA to Rockwell International in August 1972. This paper describes the orbiter's current design characteristics and its major assemblies. The aerothermodynamic and other considerations involved in defining the configuration are discussed, and the orbiter flight characteristics are summarized. Arrangement of the crew cabin, crew provisions, accommodations for payloads, and descriptions of the major subsystems are presented, providing design highlights of interest to space mission planners and to the aerospace technical community.

Modernization of the 60-inch telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory

A contract for modernization of the Mount Wilson 60-inch telescope was awarded. Under this contract, the original hour angle and declination drives were replaced, digital coordinate readouts were added, a Cassegrain/ coude flip cage was built and installed, the telescope was completely rewired, a new control console was installed, and a coude spectrograph was completed. Extensive building modifications also were made to provide a working floor at mezzanine level for a computer and a coude observing room. These modifications and additions were completed by February 1970, and the telescope returned to regular and continuous use for stellar and planetary astronomy.

Space station interior design: Results of the NASA/AIA space station interior national design competition

The results of the NASA/AIA space station interior national design competition held during 1971 are presented in order to make available to those who work in the architectural, engineering, and interior design fields the results of this design activity in which the interiors of several space shuttle size modules were designed for optimal habitability. Each design entry also includes a final configuration of all modules into a complete space station. A brief history of the competition is presented with the competition guidelines and constraints. The first place award entry is presented in detail, and specific features from other selected designs are discussed. This is followed by a discussion of how some of these design features might be applied to terrestrial as well as space situations.

The Commercial Application of Missile/Space Technology, Parts 1 and 2

This report is concerned with the transfer of technology from missile and space programs to non-missile/space applications in the United States. It presents the findings of a University of Denver Research Institute study sponsored by a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) grant awarded in November 1961. Initial stimulation for the unsolicited proposal leading to this study came from a 1960 Brookings Institution report to NASA, Proposed Studies on the Implications of Peaceful Space Activities for Human Affairs.
