Gates to Gregg High Voltage Transmission Line Study

The usefulness of LANDSAT data in the planning of transmission line routes was assessed. LANDSAT digital data and image processing techniques, specifically a multi-date supervised classification aproach, were used to develop a land cover map for an agricultural area near Fresno, California. Twenty-six land cover classes were identified, of which twenty classes were agricultural crops. High classification accuracies (greater than 80%) were attained for several classes, including cotton, grain, and vineyards. The primary products generated were 1:24,000, 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 scale maps of the classification and acreage summaries for all land cover classes within four alternate transmission line routes.

Adaptive reference voltage generator for firing angle control of line-commutated inverters

A control system for a permanent-magnet motor driven by a multiphase line-commulated inverter is described. It is provided with integrators for integrating the back EMF of each phase of the motor for use in generating system control signals for an inverter gate logic using a sync and firing angle control generator connected to the outputs of the integrators. The firing angle control signals are produced by the control generator by means for combining 120 deg segments of the integrated back EMF signals symmetrical about their maxima into composite positive and negative waveforms, and means for sampling the maxima of each waveform every 120 deg. These samples are then used as positive and negative firing angle control signals. Whereby any change in amplitude of the integrated back EMF signals will not affect a change in the operating power factor of the motor and inverter.

Fitting voltage curves with an electrochemically derived equation

Previous work is refined and extended to describe the discharge curve of Ni-Cd cells. Several models are discussed which are based on chronopotentiometry theory and on a thermodynamic approach. Emphasis is placed on improvement of the fit for the initial portion of discharge. Equations are presented which improve the fit for all regions of the discharge curve.

High-voltage spark atomic emission detector for gas chromatography

A dc-powered, double-gap, miniature nanosecond spark source for emission spectrochemical analysis of gas chromatographic effluents is described. The spark is formed between two thoriated tungsten electrodes by the discharge of a coaxial capacitor. The spark detector is coupled to the gas chromatograph by a heated transfer line. The gas chromatographic effluent is introduced into the heated spark chamber where atomization and excitation of the effluent occurs upon breakdown of the analytical gap. A microcomputer-controlled data acquisition system allows the implementation of time-resolution techniques to distinguish between the analyte emission and the background continuum produced by the spark discharge. Multiple sparks are computer averaged to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The application of the spark detector for element-selective detection of metals and nonmetals is reported.

Electric currents and voltage drops along auroral field lines

An assessment is presented of the current state of knowledge concerning Birkeland currents and the parallel electric field, with discussions focusing on the Birkeland primary region 1 sheets, the region 2 sheets which parallel them and appear to close in the partial ring current, the cusp currents (which may be correlated with the interplanetary B(y) component), and the Harang filament. The energy required by the parallel electric field and the associated particle acceleration processes appears to be derived from the Birkeland currents, for which evidence is adduced from particles, inverted V spectra, rising ion beams and expanded loss cones. Conics may on the other hand signify acceleration by electrostatic ion cyclotron waves associated with beams accelerated by the parallel electric field.

Small gravitationally elicited voltage transients in pea stems

Decapitated veritcal stem segments were observed for 45 min, noting the number of transients mu V for each 5-min interval. Results for two sets of stem segments are plotted. The average frequencies were 0.72 + or -0.05 and 0.66 + or - 0.04 per 5 min. One set of segments was swiveled gently to the horizontal position; then, recording continued for another 90 min. Transients continued in the vertical controls at a closely similar average rate 0.78 + or - 0.04 per 5 min. However, after the first 5-min interval the horizontally placed plants exhibited transients at an increased average rate of 1.08 + or - 0.04 per 5 min. The frequency of transients also increased following horizontal placement of intact shoots. However, it appears that this increase had two components: one due to gravity reception, and one due to the redistribution of indolacetic acid (IAA) believed to mediate gravitropic curvature (or, more specifically, to the increase of IAA in the lower tissue.

Low-frequency switching voltage regulators for terrestrial photovoltaic systems

The photovoltaic technology project and the stand alone applications project are discussed. Two types of low frequency switching type regulators were investigated. The design, operating characteristics and field application of these regulators is described. The regulators are small in size, low in cost, very low in power dissipation, reliable and allow considerable flexibility in system design.

Optoelectronic Technique Eliminates Common-Mode Voltages

Small signals transmitted between circuits at large differences of potential. Technique lends itself to accurate measurement of any electrical parameter and display of value. Accommodates broad range of measured values from millivolts to hundreds of volts and provides unlimited electrical isolation. Measured parameter converted to duration, proportional to value, of pulse of light. Transmitted along optical fiber to or from isolated circuit. Applications include operation of traveling-wave tubes or other electron-gun devices including filaments at cathode potential and measurement of current from, or control of series stacked power supplies. Used for optimization and testing of depressed-collector/microwave-tube combinations.

A comparison of current-voltage relationships of collectors in the earth's ionosphere with and without electron beam emission

Currents measurements obtained by the two sections of the Cooperative High Altitude Rocket Gun Experiment-2 sounding rocket, a mother vehicle carrying a 1-keV electron gun and a daughter vehicle tethered to the mother, are compared with the results of previous models of current collection by a charged conductor in a plasma. The current collection of the daughter vehicle, a conducting body in the ionosphere, is found to agree with the Parker-Murphy (1967) limit. The additional current collection found for the mother vehicle is attributed to beam-plasma interactions.

Recent observations of high voltage spacecraft-environment interaction at LEO altitudes using sounding rockets

The paper addresses the subject of the interaction of positively and negatively charged bodies with the terrestrial ionosphere at low earth orbit altitudes. Data from two recent sounding rocket flights are used to establish that the current collected by exposed conductors biassed positively at up to 45kV relative to the ionospheric plasma generally follow predictions which account for strong control of electron flow by the geomagnetic field. If the biased structure is in the vicinity of disturbing influences such as an emitted charged particle beam, or locally enhanced gas pressure, then large deviations from the space-charge-limited return currents occur.

On the auroral current-voltage relationship

The auroral relationship between the upward parallel current and the parallel potential drop is predicted using Knight's (1973) collisionless-plasma kinetic theory, and the results are compared with near-simultaneously carried out measurements by DE 1 and DE 2. The agreement between the calculated and observed data is generally good. However, the Knight current, since it does not include upward ionospheric electrons, is not valid in the downward return current region. It was found that suprathermal electron bursts could be observed in the diffuse aurora at the same invariant latitudes, both at high and at low altitudes, suggesting that these bursts are a spatial rather than temporal phenomenon.
