Analyzing Transonic Flow Over A Wing And Fuselage

TAWFIVE computer program calculates transonic flow over transport-type wing and fuselage. Combines multigrid acceleration technique in iterative solution of potential equation with use of integral-form boundary-layer equations to provide software tool computationally efficient, yet accurate enough for use in design. Simplifies solution process by breaking problem into loosely coupled set of modified equations. Inviscid-flow method, using standard inviscid-flow equations, valid in "outer" region away from wing, whereas boundary-layer equations valid in thin region near solid surface of wing. Written in FORTRAN 77.

Integrated design of the CSI evolutionary structure: A verification of the design methodology

One of the main objectives of the Controls-Structures Interaction (CSI) program is to develop and evaluate integrated controls-structures design methodology for flexible space structures. Thus far, integrated design methodologies for a class of flexible spacecraft, which require fine attitude pointing and vibration suppression with no payload articulation, have been extensively investigated. Various integrated design optimization approaches, such as single-objective optimization, and multi-objective optimization, have been implemented with an array of different objectives and constraints involving performance and cost measures such as total mass, actuator mass, steady-state pointing performance, transient performance, control power, and many more. These studies have been performed using an integrated design software tool (CSI-DESIGN CODE) which is under development by the CSI-ADM team at the NASA Langley Research Center. To date, all of these studies, irrespective of the type of integrated optimization posed or objectives and constraints used, have indicated that integrated controls-structures design results in an overall spacecraft design which is considerably superior to designs obtained through a conventional sequential approach. Consequently, it is believed that validation of some of these results through fabrication and testing of a structure which is designed through an integrated design approach is warranted. The objective of this paper is to present and discuss the efforts that have been taken thus far for the validation of the integrated design methodology.

An astrophysics data program investigation of spatial structure of supernova remnants

The final report on astrophysics data program investigation of spatial structure of supernova remnants for the period 1 Aug. 1989 to 31 Jul. 1991 is presented. The goal of the project was the study of the spatial structure of supernova remnants (SNR's) as observed in the x-ray band. A number of software tools were developed for the analysis: (1) a program to fit various geometric models to high resolution x-ray data, and (2) programs for Fourier Transform analysis of clumping in SNR's. These programs were applied to high resolution imager (HRI) data on the young galactic SNR's Tycho and Kepler with some success.

Rapid development of the X-31 simulation to support flight-testing

The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Program has been recognized to form the International Test Organization, with the NASA Dryden Flight Research Facility (NASA-Dryden) as the responsible test organization. The two X-31 research aircraft and engineering support personnel were colocated at NASA-Dryden, with flight test operations beginning in Apr. 1992. Therefore, rapid development of a hardware-in-the-loop simulation was needed to support the flight test operations at NASA-Dryden, and to perform verification and validation of flight control software. The X-31 simulation system requirements, distributed simulation system architecture, simulation components math models to the visual system, and the advanced capabilities the X-31 simulation provides. In addition, unique software tools and the methods used to rapidly develop this simulation system will be highlighted.

Integrated design and experimental validation of the CSI evolutionary structure

An experimental validation of the optimization-based integrated design methodology performed under the Controls-Structures Interaction (CSI) program for a class of flexible spacecraft is reviewed. The studies have been performed using an integrated design software tool which is under development at the NASA-Langley Research Center. It is analytically and experimentally demonstrated that integrated controls-structures design can yield designs which are substantially superior to those obtained through the traditional sequential approach.

Development and operation of a real-time simulation at the NASA Ames Vertical Motion Simulator

The Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) facility at the NASA Ames Research Center combines the largest vertical motion capability in the world with a flexible real-time operating system allowing research to be conducted quickly and effectively. Due to the diverse nature of the aircraft simulated and the large number of simulations conducted annually, the challenge for the simulation engineer is to develop an accurate real-time simulation in a timely, efficient manner. The SimLab facility and the software tools necessary for an operating simulation will be discussed. Subsequent sections will describe the development process through operation of the simulation; this includes acceptance of the model, validation, integration and production phases.
