(Doublon) Benchmarking of Different Inverse Point Kinetics Implementations for an Autocorrected Reactimeter Algorithm

In November 2017, the Transient Reactor Test Facility returned to operation. Since that time, many transient test series have been completed, such as the Transient Heatsink Overpower Response capsule (THOR), the Transient Water Irradiation System for TREAT (TWIST), and Sirius. Each has provided valuable data for materials performance and reactor safety that can be applied in future designs. During each experimental series, detector count rates provided important information on the core behavior during transients. However, a limitation of these data is that variations in the neutron distribution during experiments can cause errors when attempting to infer reactivity evolution from detector signals. Neutron physics codes can be used to compute the flux shape variations. However, this is a poor solution when the experimental data is used for code verification, validation and uncertainty quantification. Indeed, if the output of the code is used both as a reference and to correct what the reference is compared to, the circular dependency limits the quality of the verification, validation and uncertainty quantification approach. To overcome this problem, the autocorrected reactimeter algorithm (ACRA) has been developed. This approach infers a time-dependent reactivity evolution by testing different spatial corrections and selecting the one that minimizes reactivity variations when the core is in a frozen configuration (i.e., when there is no variation in parameters affecting reactivity). However, the scope of this method was limited to transients where there were negligible thermal feedback. Indeed, the core is never in a frozen configuration when the fuel temperature varies during the whole transient. This is our motivation for developing an improved version of the ACRA that does not require frozen configurations. To develop this new algorithm, we need a precise and unbiased implementation of the inverse point kinetic equations (IPKEs) as any error in the reactivity evaluation will be propagated into the choice of the optimal spatial correction. Indeed, the previous reactimeter algorithm would use approximations, such as a negligible flux amplitude derivative, to focus on rapidity. For the numerical validation of ACRA, we aim at absolute error under for reactivity derived from signals similar to the one of this study. In this summary, we test eight different IPKE implementations. Each will process a mockup signal built for this study, similar to those that the future ACRA will process. Each reactivity output will be compared to the reference reactivity that has been used to generate the mockup signal. The implementation minimizing the difference with the reference reactivity will be used in the development of a new ACRA formulation.

2021 Summer Resource Adequacy in the ERCOT Region

This report is an update to the NETL report on the same topic that examined the potential system performance of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) system during the summer of 2020. Anticipated reserve margins in ERCOT have risen year-over-year from the 10.7 percent reported in ERCOT’s Final Seasonal Assessment of Resource Adequacy (SARA) for Summer 2020 to 15.7 percent for Summer 2021 in ERCOT’s Capacity, Demand and Reserves [CDR] report published in December 2020 and 2021 Summer Preliminary SARA published in March 2021. Using data from ERCOT’s 2021 Summer SARA, CDR, and historical performance data, six economic dispatch scenarios using PROMOD were developed to assess the risk to ERCOT of a load shedding event for Summer 2021. The results suggest that ERCOT could make it through the summer season without a loss of load event, as long as the weather remains normal. However, through a combination of scenarios, including increased demand, increased forced outages, and low wind output, ERCOT is likely to find itself operating in emergency conditions.

Spatially Resolved Performance Analysis for Perovskite Solar Cells

This review explores the current state of the art in spatially resolved characterization of mixed-halide perovskite solar cells. As the size of perovskite cells and modules continues to grow, quantification of the spatial distribution of key cell parameters will become increasingly valuable in predicting ultimate cell-level performance and tracking process homogeneity. Here, both high resolution microscopic approaches using scanning techniques and camera-based methods for full-area cell and/or module analysis are discussed. The value of this local data in predicting performance losses at the cell level is particularly emphasized. Measurable physical parameters sensitive to losses of voltage, current, fill factor, and efficiency are discussed together with selected experimental results. It is demonstrated that a combination of spatially resolved cell parameter mapping/imaging can be used to quantitatively discriminate various loss contributions at high resolution. The impact and control of inhomogeneities become particularly important when upscaling from small devices to large formats compatible with industrial mass production.

Opportunities and data requirements for data-driven prognostics and health management in liquid hydrogen storage systems

During the past decade, Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) has become an important set of tools in various areas of industry and academic reliability engineering. PHM consists of a variety of mathematical and computational methods used to support data-driven decision-making to increase the safety, availability, and reliability of complex engineering systems. In particular, PHM can provide crucial insight into reliability and safety design improvements for developing technologies where historical performance and failure data are limited. This is the case of hydrogen fueling and storage technologies. This work presents a high-level approach for designing data-driven PHM applications for bulk liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) storage systems for hydrogen fueling stations. This paper addresses core aspects of the design, development, and implementation of data-driven PHM applications that can improve the reliability assessment of hydrogen components. The analysis focuses on the relationship between data availability and diagnostic/prognostic capabilities; potential challenges; and integration schemes for current risk mitigation measures. We identify potential condition-monitoring data sources for key components in an LH 2 storage system, including storage tanks, piping, and pumps. Further, we determine that the short-term goals for the implementation of data-driven models in PHM frameworks in hydrogen systems should focus on developing adequate data collection and analysis strategies, as well as exploring the effect on reliability, safety, and regulations for hydrogen systems.

Towards a robust out-of-the-box neural network model for genomic data

The accurate prediction of biological features from genomic data is paramount for precision medicine and sustainable agriculture. For decades, neural network models have been widely popular in fields like computer vision, astrophysics and targeted marketing given their prediction accuracy and their robust performance under big data settings. Yet neural network models have not made a successful transition into the medical and biological world due to the ubiquitous characteristics of biological data such as modest sample sizes, sparsity, and extreme heterogeneity. Here, we investigate the robustness, generalization potential and prediction accuracy of widely used convolutional neural network and natural language processing models with a variety of heterogeneous genomic datasets. Mainly, recurrent neural network models outperform convolutional neural network models in terms of prediction accuracy, overfitting and transferability across the datasets under study. While the perspective of a robust out-of-the-box neural network model is out of reach, we identify certain model characteristics that translate well across datasets and could serve as a baseline model for translational researchers.

Automating Anomaly Detection for Target systems at Spallation Neutron Source

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, produces the world’s most intense pulse neutrons beams. An accelerated proton beam is directed into a mercury target to generate neutrons via spallation. The target system accounted for over 40% of the overall downtime of the facility in 2022. Thus, early detection in anomalies in the target systems can enable taking corrective actions to avoid failures and reduce downtime. Fault prognostics and anomaly detection in accelerators, both at SNS and outside, has largely focused on the beam side. This paper presents one the first studies exploring leveraging machine learning to automate the detection of anomalies in the target system. The target system consists of over 30 different interconnected subsystems, and the present work focuses on the mercury process system as a use case. Analyzing data from 28 process variables from 2022 and 2023, tree-based and reconstruction-based algorithms are employed to detect anomalies in archived data. The algorithms detected previously unreported anomalies, several of which were deemed alert worthy by human experts, particularly those found by reconstruction-based algorithms. Using data from each production run in the accelerator increased the generalizability of the models in time. Efforts are now underway to implement a workflow for incorporating human feedback to update the models and evaluating performance on unseen data. The models will eventually be integrated into the existing System Tracking and Reliability system with a web interface for automated anomaly detection and reporting along with a pathway for incorporating human feedback for model updates.

Automated pipeline processing X-ray diffraction data from dynamic compression experiments on the Extreme Conditions Beamline of PETRA III

Presented and discussed here is the implementation of a software solution that provides prompt X-ray diffraction data analysis during fast dynamic compression experiments conducted within the dynamic diamond anvil cell technique. It includes efficient data collection, streaming of data and metadata to a high-performance cluster (HPC), fast azimuthal data integration on the cluster, and tools for controlling the data processing steps and visualizing the data using the DIOPTAS software package. This data processing pipeline is invaluable for a great number of studies. The potential of the pipeline is illustrated with two examples of data collected on ammonia–water mixtures and multiphase mineral assemblies under high pressure. The pipeline is designed to be generic in nature and could be readily adapted to provide rapid feedback for many other X-ray diffraction techniques, e.g. large-volume press studies, in situ stress/strain studies, phase transformation studies, chemical reactions studied with high-resolution diffraction etc.

Enhanced Tensor Completion Based Approaches for State Estimation in Distribution Systems

Grid state estimation is essential for effective control and management of distribution systems. While weighted least squares has been the conventional method for state estimation, sparsity-aware methods have become popular due to their superior performance with limited data. Matrix completion and compressed sensing-based state estimation approaches exploit the underlying smoothness in the state variables. However, classic matrix completion methods do not take into account the temporal correlation of system states. Compressed sensing methods, on the other hand, require an appropriate choice of sparsifying basis that may not be easy to identify. This paper proposes a blocktensor completion based framework which uses an alternative approach to estimate voltage phasor, power injections and branch currents. This approach utilizes the temporal correlation of the system states in a tensor trace-norm minimization formulation with power flow equations as constraints. Herein, feature scaling is introduced in the problem formulation to benefit from the improved sensitivity of the tensor trace norm to the matrix columns in the scaled unfoldings of the tensor. Weighted tensor norm is utilized to exploit the structures of the different unfoldings of the state measurement tensor to improve the voltage estimation. The estimation accuracy is further improved by alternatively estimating the tensor columns and increasing the available data at each stage in the tensor completion process. The proposed methods are evaluated on the IEEE-33, 37 test systems and a 100- node test system. The proposed methods are shown to provide significant performance gains relative to the classic matrix and tensor completion based approaches.

NUM-DAT File Format Specification: Used in M-9 Gun Experiment Data Archiving

The M-9 Shock and Detonation Physics group executes experiments on gun and explosive platforms with large numbers of oscilloscopes used for data acquisition. The data acquisition from these oscilloscopes was automated many years ago using a custom piece of software called RunDig . The default save format from this software is a custom structure referred to as "NUM-DAT" format. This file format includes a text ".DAT" file which is a header file used to interpret the binary ".NUM" file which contains the oscilloscope data. The data save format was originally developed by John Vorthman and has been in use by M-9 personnel for over 20 years. This data format has been used for archiving data from experiments performed by M-9 personnel at TA-40, TA-39, and the TA-55 Impact Test Facility. Numerous custom analysis and visualization programs have also been developed, and continue to be used, that utilize this data format. This document describes the NUM-DAT format and provides code examples for reading the format and converting it to other formats.

Synthetic Data Generation Using Machine Learning

Robust machine learning techniques for image analysis require a substantial amount of data to yield confident results. In the nuclear domain, data scarcity is a substantial challenge because there are so few facilities worldwide. This research focuses on being able alleviate the data scarcity problem by generating synthetic data to bridge the gap between large and small datasets. This work achieves that goal using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) architectural approach, by training a model on real-world data and expands that small dataset through synthetic data amendments. Model performance is impacted by the size of the real-world dataset and the number of training epochs utilized. This means that 1) It is important to develop your GAN to be optimized with the specific data type, and 2) approaches taken when training the GAN should be specialized to encompass important aspects of the dataset that it is generating. By taking a step to improve dataset sizes in this way, the gap between models trained by parties with significant amount of data and those without access to large data, closes, allowing for robust analyses of satellite imagery for nuclear domain applications.

Rancor-HUNTER: A Virtual Plant and Operator Environment for Predicting Human Performance

Advances in simulation capabilities to model physical systems have outpaced the development of simulations for humans using those physical systems. There is an argument that the infinite span of potential human behaviors inherently render human modeling more challenging than physical systems. Despite this challenge, the need for modeling humans interacting with these complex systems is paramount. As technologies have improved, many of the failure modes originating from the physical systems have been solved. This means the overall proportion of human errors has increased, such that it is not uncommon to be the primary driver of system failure in modern complex systems. Moreover, technologies such as automated systems may introduce emerging contexts that can cause new, unanticipated modes of human error. Therefore, it is now more important than ever to develop models of human behavior to realize overall system error reductions and achieve established safety margins. To support new and novel concepts of operations for the anticipated wave of advanced nuclear reactor deployments, human factors and human reliability analysis researchers need to develop advanced simulation-based approaches. This talk presents a simulation environment suitable to both collect data and then perform Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate human performance and develop better models of human behavior. Specifically, the Rancor Microworld Simulator models a complex energy production system in a simplified manner. Rancor includes computer-based procedures, which serve as a framework to automatically classify human behaviors without manual, subjective experimenter coding during scenarios. This method supports a detailed level of analysis at the task level. It is feasible for collecting large sample sizes required to develop quantitative modelling elements that have historically challenged traditional full-scope simulator study approaches. Additionally, the other portion of this experimental platform, the Human Unimodel for Nuclear Technology to Enhance Reliability (HUNTER), is presented to show how the collected data can be used to evaluate novel scenarios based on the contextual factors, or performance shaping factors, derived from Rancor simulations. Rancor-HUNTER is being used to predict operator performance with new procedures, such as results from control room modernization or new-build situations. Rancor-HUNTER is also proving a useful surrogate platform to model human performance for other complex systems.

Predicting Volume of Distribution in Humans: Performance of In Silico Methods for a Large Set of Structurally Diverse Clinical Compounds

Volume of distribution at steady state (V D,ss ) is one of the key pharmacokinetic parameters estimated during the drug discovery process. Despite considerable efforts to predict V D,ss , accuracy and choice of prediction methods remain a challenge, with evaluations constrained to a small set (<150) of compounds. To address these issues, a series of in silico methods for predicting human V D,ss directly from structure were evaluated using a large set of clinical compounds. Machine learning (ML) models were built to predict V D,ss directly and to predict input parameters required for mechanistic and empirical V D,ss predictions. In addition, log D, fraction unbound in plasma (fup), and blood-to-plasma partition ratio (BPR) were measured on 254 compounds to estimate the impact of measured data on predictive performance of mechanistic models. Furthermore, the impact of novel methodologies such as measuring partition (Kp) in adipocytes and myocytes (n = 189) on V D,ss predictions was also investigated. In predicting V D,ss directly from chemical structures, both mechanistic and empirical scaling using a combination of predicted rat and dog V D,ss demonstrated comparable performance (62%–71% within 3-fold). The direct ML model outperformed other in silico methods (75% within 3-fold, r 2 = 0.5, AAFE = 2.2) when built from a larger data set. Scaling to human from predicted V D,ss of either rat or dog yielded poor results (<47% within 3-fold). Measured fup and BPR improved performance of mechanistic V D,ss predictions significantly (81% within 3-fold, r 2 = 0.6, AAFE = 2.0). Adipocyte intracellular Kp showed good correlation to the V D,ss but was limited in estimating the compounds with low V D,ss .

Radiometric Testing of Germicidal UV Products, Round 2: Upper-Room Luminaires (CALiPER Report)

This report analyzes the independently tested performance of eight germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) upper-room luminaires marketed for use in occupied spaces and purchased between March and June 2023. Three of the luminaires used UV-emitting LEDs, and the remaining five luminaires used low-pressure mercury (LPM) lamps. Product testing covered radiometric and electrical performance for each luminaire. Initial performance was measured for all eight products, and four were additionally measured after 100 h and 500 h of operation. Measured performance was compared against manufacturer or vendor claims. Specifiers and buyers of GUV products need accurate performance claims and data to deploy GUV technology safely and effectively. As with the CALiPER GUV Round 1 report, this CALiPER GUV Round 2 report demonstrates that manufacturers and vendors need significant education and training to accurately test and report the performance of their GUV products. Further development of industry consensus standards and guidelines may address testing limitations and improve test methods, product performance, and the accuracy of performance claims.
