Observing dark matter decays to gravitons via graviton-photon conversion

Since dark matter is only known to have gravitational interactions, it may plausibly decay to gravitons on cosmological timescales. Although such a scenario can be easily realized, there are currently no known limits on this possibility based on indirect-detection methods. We propose a new search strategy that exploits the Gertsenshtein effect, whereby the gravitons produced in dark matter decays can convert to photons in large-scale magnetic fields along the line of sight to an observer. These conversions primarily occur within cosmological filaments which occupy a large (order unity) volume fraction and contain ∼ 10 – 100 nG fields with ∼ Mpc coherence lengths. Thus, dark matter decays to gravitons predict an irreducible population of extragalactic photons, which we constrain using the extragalactic gamma-ray background measured by the Fermi-LAT telescope. Using this method, we derive the first-ever constraints on the dark matter lifetime in the 0.1 GeV - 10 8 GeV mass range, contingent on the assumed filament magnetic field strength. We also make projections for the Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope, which can improve sensitivity to this dark matter decay channel by an order of magnitude beyond those we set using Fermi-LAT data.

High-energy micrometre-scale pixel direct conversion X-ray detector

The objective of this work was to fabricate and characterize a new X-ray imaging detector with micrometre-scale pixel dimensions (7.8 µm) and high detection efficiency for hard X-ray energies above 20 keV. A key technology component consists of a monolithic hybrid detector built by direct deposition of an amorphous selenium film on a custom designed CMOS readout integrated circuit. Characterization was carried out at the synchrotron beamline 1-BM-B at the Advanced Photon Source of Argonne National Laboratory. The direct conversion detector demonstrated micrometre-scale spatial resolution with a 63 keV modulation transfer function of 10% at Nyquist frequency. In addition, spatial resolving power down to 8 µm was determined by imaging a transmission bar target at 21 keV. X-ray signal linearity, responsivity and lag were also characterized in the same energy range. Finally, phase contrast edge enhancement was observed in a phase object placed in the beam path. This amorphous selenium/CMOS detector technology can address gaps in commercially available X-ray detectors which limit their usefulness for existing synchrotron applications at energies greater than 50 keV; for example, phase contrast tomography and high-resolution imaging of nanoscale lattice distortions in bulk crystalline materials using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging. Here, the technology will also facilitate the creation of novel synchrotron imaging applications for X-ray energies at or above 20 keV.

Design and Analysis of an Integral MPPT Control Law for Wave Energy Conversion Systems

In this paper, we propose an integral-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for point absorber wave energy conversion (WEC) systems. A permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is coupled to the point absorber and its drive implements the proposed MPPT control. While the rotating frame of reference of the PMSG implements power control, the slower mechanical frequency of the incident waves are processed with an additional transformation that yields another set of dc dynamics. The computed dc power in the new reference frame, which is focused on slow wave dynamics, is input to the MPPT control law that tunes the emulated resistance of the machine drive to extract peak power from the wave absorber device. We derive a stability condition for the proposed controller and validate our control design on a simulated 10kW system.

Comparative Investigation of System-Level Optimized Power Conversion System Architectures to Reduce LCOE for Large-Scale PV-Plus-Storage Farms

PV-plus-storage (PVS) has become a prevalent configuration for newly commissioned large-scale solar projects. However, the optimal power conversion system (PCS) architecture has not been investigated yet. This paper first validates the limited impact of inverter cost on LCOE and then explores a system-level optimized PCS architecture with extended LCOE reduction to proliferate large-scale dispatchable solar energy. Two state-of-the-art architectures including central inverters (CI), traditional 480/600 V string inverters (SI) are compared with newly proposed medium voltage string inverters (MVSI) and multiport DC transformer (MDCT). With verified layouts and single line diagrams (SLDs) of 20 MW PVS plants, the losses and costs breakdown of different architectures are extracted and the PCS related LCOEs are derived. In this analysis, all electrical bill of materials (EBOS) elements, inverters, battery storage and its associated components, are included, whose losses and costs are obtained from markets, manufacturers, and literature. Besides, the sensitivities of PCS-related LCOEs to Inverter-Loading-Ratio (ILR) are also investigated. Here, the results show that compared with CI and SI with 1.5 kV PV, 4 kV MVSI and 34 kV MDCT present an extended LCOE reduction across all ILR from 1.0 to 3.0, making them economically favorable candidates for PVS farms.

Design Considerations for Developing 1.2 kV 4H-SiC BiDFET-enabled Power Conversion Systems

Bidirectional switches are essential for cycloconverter and matrix converter applications to facilitate single-stage AC-AC conversion without intermediate energy storage elements. The 1.2 kV 4H-SiC BiDFET was developed as the first monolithic bidirectional SiC power transistor. This paper describes the design considerations taken into account while creating the BiDFET device and developing custom packages for housing the switch in discrete form for low power applications and in module form for high-power applications. The realized switches are characterized for their on-state and switching performance. The versatility of the BiDFET device is demonstrated by operating a single BiDFET H-bridge in voltage-source-inverter and current-source-inverter topologies only by varying the gate bias on the individual BiDFETs and reversing the input-output connections.

Mid-Infrared Nonlinear Frequency Conversion Using Monolithic Barium Titanate on Silicon-on-Insulator

In this work, efficient nonlinear frequency conversion in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) region was demonstrated by a barium titanate (BTO) on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. The BTO thin film was epitaxially grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD). The tensorial second order optical nonlinearity and the ferroelectric domain property of the BTO were characterized by the polarimetric mid-IR second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. Azimuthal-dependent polarized SHG was modeled at different combinations of the nonlinear coefficient $d_{ij}$ and the domain fraction factor $ΔD^Y/ΔD^X$. Strong SHG intensity was experimentally observed over a broad spectrum at λ = 3.1 μm - 3.7 μm. A characteristic linear dependence between the SHG signal and the square of the pumping laser intensity was observed. The monolithic integration between the epitaxial BTO and the Si provides a compact platform for efficient on-chip light generation and quantum photonic technologies.

Monolithic Two-Terminal All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells with Power Conversion Efficiency Exceeding 21%

Monolithic two-terminal (2-T) all-perovskite tandem solar cells are a promising candidate for the next generation solar cells with ultrahigh efficiency and low fabrication cost. Here, we report on the fabrication of 2-T all-perovskite tandem solar cells consisting of solution-processed wide-bandgap and low-bandgap perovskite subcells connected by a vacuum processed interconnection layer. We employed a bulk-passivation strategy to enlarge the grain size, increase carrier mobilities, reduce electronic disorder, and suppress trap-assisted recombination in the low bandgap mixed Sn-Pb perovskite films, which leads to improved performance of low bandgap perovskite solar cells with an absorber thickness over 750 nm. This advance in high-quality low-bandgap perovskite layers enables the fabrication of efficient 2-T all-perovskite solar cells with power conversion efficiencies of more than 21% and decent stability. Our approach provides a suitable pathway to realize ultra-high efficiency 2-T all-perovskite tandem solar cells.

Event-to-Video Conversion for Overhead Object Detection

Collecting overhead imagery using an event camera is desirable due to the energy efficiency of the image sensor compared to standard cameras. However, event cameras complicate downstream image processing, especially for complex tasks such as object detection. In this paper, we investigate the viability of event streams for overhead object detection. We demonstrate that across a number of standard modeling approaches, there is a significant gap in performance between dense event representations and corresponding RGB frames. We establish that this gap is, in part, due to a lack of overlap between the event representations and the pre-training data that the object detectors were initially trained on through a number of experiments. Then, apply an off-the-shelf event-to-video conversion tool that converts event streams into gray-scale video to close this gap. We demonstrate that this approach results in a large performance increase, outperforming even event-specific object detection techniques on our overhead target task. These results suggest that better aligning event representations with existing large pre-trained models may result in greater short-term performance gains compared to end-to-end event-specific architectural improvements.

Effect of water vapor and thermal history on nuclear waste feed conversion to glass

Water affects the glass melting process by interacting with the foam layer at the glass melt surface and by influencing the batch conversion reactions. Water vapor from the nuclear waste slurry feed maintains a high water vapor pressure in the melter atmosphere. To investigate to what extent water vapor affects the vitrification of nuclear waste in joule-heated, cold-top melters, a series of feed expansion experiments were performed under humid and dry atmospheres using samples of low-activity waste (LAW) melter feed simulants. Melting of feed pellets in the presence of water vapor slightly decreased the temperature of primary foam onset, but did not significantly affect the feed volume expansion by foaming or the foam-collapse temperature. Sets of feed expansion experiments and evolved gas analyses were also performed to check the effect of thermal history on LAW feed samples tested as direct slurry, loose powder, and slow- and fast-dried pellets.

Shear wave generation by mode conversion in picosecond ultrasonics: Impact of grain orientation and material properties

Abstract Picosecond ultrasonics has seen wide application in the investigation of interfaces in semiconductors and 3D imaging in biological systems. Shear ultrasonic waves are important for elastic constant and grain orientation measurement in ceramic materials. In this study, we investigate the impact of grain orientation and material's elastic properties on the generation efficiency of shear waves by mode conversion at a transducer thin film/substrate interface. The solution of acoustic wave equations suggests that crystal grain orientation has a strong impact on the generated shear wave amplitude. This dependence is found to be closely related to the magnitude of longitudinal component of wave displacements. The applicability of analytical model is validated by the experimental results from time‐domain Brillouin scattering. Moreover, material properties determine acoustic wave amplitudes based on the acoustic mismatch model and, particularly, large elastic anisotropy defined by Zener ratio favors strong shear waves. In the light of this analysis, several recommendations on suitable grain orientations and film materials are made to facilitate shear wave detection.

Eye-Safe 1.5 and 2.0 Micron Laser Power Conversion Using Metamorphic InGaAs Photovoltaic Devices

Laser power transmission at 1.5 and 2.0 microns are considered eye-safe up to 0.1 W/cm2 irradiance. Further, the atmospheric bands at these two wavelengths may provide the highest optical transmission through the atmosphere in hazy conditions. By slowly changing the lattice-constant of InGaAs with a Compositionally Graded Buffer (CGB), we have fabricated InGaAs photovoltaic (PV) devices over a wide range of bandgaps useful for multijunction concentrating photovoltaic devices, thermophotovoltaic devices, and Laser Power Converters (LPC). Here, we have demonstrated monochromatic power conversion of 1.5-micron light with an eye-safe efficiency of 39.8% at 0.1 W/cm2 with InGaAs devices lattice-matched to InP with an Antireflection Coating (ARC). We have also demonstrated 30.2% and 24.5% eye-safe LPC efficiency of metamorphic InGaAs devices grown on GaAs substrates using GaInP and AlGaAsP CGBs, respectively. Finally, we have demonstrated metamorphic InGaAs devices grown on InP and GaAs substrates that are estimated to have eye-safe LPC efficiencies at 2.0 microns of 27.4% and 20.9% respectively. The efficiencies of all these LPC devices continues to increase up to about 30-70 times the eye-safe irradiance.

Rhodoxanthin synthase from honeysuckle; a membrane diiron enzyme catalyzes the multistep conversation of β-carotene to rhodoxanthin

Rhodoxanthin is a vibrant red carotenoid found across the plant kingdom and in certain birds and fish. It is a member of the atypical retro class of carotenoids, which contain an additional double bond and a concerted shift of the conjugated double bonds relative to the more widely occurring carotenoid pigments, and whose biosynthetic origins have long remained elusive. In this work, we identify LHRS ( Lonicera hydroxylase rhodoxanthin synthase), a variant β-carotene hydroxylase (BCH)–type integral membrane diiron enzyme that mediates the conversion of β-carotene into rhodoxanthin. We identify residues that are critical to rhodoxanthin formation by LHRS. Substitution of only three residues converts a typical BCH into a multifunctional enzyme that mediates a multistep pathway from β-carotene to rhodoxanthin via a series of distinct oxidation steps in which the product of each step becomes the substrate for the next catalytic cycle. We introduce a biosynthetic pathway from β-carotene to rhodoxanthin.

Lignin conversion to β-ketoadipic acid by Pseudomonas putida via metabolic engineering and bioprocess development

Bioconversion of a heterogeneous mixture of lignin-related aromatic compounds (LRCs) to a single product via microbial biocatalysts is a promising approach to valorize lignin. Here, Pseudomonas putida KT2440 was engineered to convert mixed p-coumaroyl– and coniferyl-type LRCs to β-ketoadipic acid, a precursor for performance-advantaged polymers. Expression of enzymes mediating aromatic O-demethylation, hydroxylation, and ring-opening steps was tuned, and a global regulator was deleted. β-ketoadipate titers of 44.5 and 25 grams per liter and productivities of 1.15 and 0.66 grams per liter per hour were achieved from model LRCs and corn stover-derived LRCs, respectively, the latter representing an overall yield of 0.10 grams per gram corn stover-derived lignin. Technoeconomic analysis of the bioprocess and downstream processing predicted a β-ketoadipate minimum selling price of $\$2.01$ per kilogram, which is cost competitive with fossil carbon-derived adipic acid ($\$1.10$ to 1.80 per kilogram). Overall, this work achieved bioproduction metrics with economic relevance for conversion of lignin-derived streams into a performance-advantaged bioproduct.

Direct HCN synthesis via plasma-assisted conversion of methane and nitrogen

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is synthesized from ammonia (NH 3 ) and methane (CH 4 ) at ~1200°C over a Pt catalyst. Ammonia synthesis entails several complex, highly emitting processes. Plasma-assisted HCN synthesis directly from CH 4 and nitrogen (N 2 ) could be pivotal for on-demand HCN production. Here, we evaluate the potential of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) N 2 /CH 4 plasma for decentralized catalyst-free selective HCN production. We demonstrate a single-step conversion of methane and nitrogen to HCN with a 72% yield at <300°C. HCN is favored at low CH 4 concentrations with ethane (C 2 H 6 ) as the secondary product. We propose a first-principles microkinetic model with few electron impact reactions. The model accurately predicts primary product yields and elucidates that methyl radical (·CH 3 ) is a common intermediate in HCN and C 2 H 6 synthesis. Compared to current industrial processes, N 2 /CH 4 DBD plasma can achieve minimal CO 2 emissions.

Broadband electro-optic polarization conversion with atomically thin black phosphorus

Metasurfaces tune polarization In photonic systems, the polarization state of light is typically manipulated with bulky components based on dielectrics and liquid crystals. Active metasurfaces now provide the possibility of shrinking the size of these components to the nanoscale. Biswas et al . demonstrate an active nanophotonic structure capable of versatile electro-optic polarization conversion. Using trilayer black phosphorus sandwiched between electrical gates forming a cavity, they show that the polarization state of light across telecommunication wavelengths can be electrically switched. Such control can be useful for a number of applications in communications, imaging, and beam steering where the wavefront of the propagating light can be actively manipulated. —ISO

Measurement of the inhomogeneity of the KATRIN tritium source electric potential by high-resolution spectroscopy of conversion electrons from $\mathbf {^{83m}}$Kr

Precision spectroscopy of the electron spectrum of the tritium β-decay near the kinematic endpoint is a direct method to determine the effective electron antineutrino mass. The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment aims to determine this quantity with a sensitivity of better than 0.3 eV (90% C.L.). An inhomogeneous electric potential in the tritium source of KATRIN can lead to distortions of the β-spectrum, which directly impact the neutrino-mass observable. This effect can be quantified through precision spectroscopy of the conversion-electrons of co-circulated metastable 83m Kr. Therefore, dedicated, several-weeks long measurement campaigns have been performed within the KATRIN data taking schedule. In this work, we infer the tritium source potential observables from these measurements, and present their implications for the neutrino-mass determination.

Conversion of poplar biomass into high-energy density tricyclic sesquiterpene jet fuel blendstocks

In an effort to ensure future energy security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create domestic jobs, the US has invested in technologies to develop sustainable biofuels and bioproducts from renewable carbon sources such as lignocellulosic biomass. Bio-derived jet fuel is of particular interest as aviation is less amenable to electrification compared to other modes of transportation and synthetic biology provides the ability to tailor fuel properties to enhance performance. Specific energy and energy density are important properties in determining the attractiveness of potential bio-derived jet fuels. For example, increased energy content can give the industry options such as longer range, higher load or reduced takeoff weight. Energy-dense sesquiterpenes have been identified as potential next-generation jet fuels that can be renewably produced from lignocellulosic biomass. We developed a biomass deconstruction and conversion process that enabled the production of two tricyclic sesquiterpenes, epi-isozizaene and prespatane, from the woody biomass poplar using the versatile basidiomycete Rhodosporidium toruloides. We demonstrated terpene production at both bench and bioreactor scales, with prespatane titers reaching 1173.6 mg/L when grown in poplar hydrolysate in a 2 L bioreactor. Additionally, we examined the theoretical fuel properties of prespatane and epi-isozizaene in their hydrogenated states as blending options for jet fuel, and compared them to aviation fuel, Jet A. Our findings indicate that prespatane and epi-isozizaene in their hydrogenated states would be attractive blending options in Jet A or other lower density renewable jet fuels as they would improve viscosity and increase their energy density. Saturated epi-isozizaene and saturated prespatane have energy densities that are 16.6 and 18.8% higher than Jet A, respectively. These results highlight the potential of R. toruloides as a production host for the sustainable and scalable production of bio-derived jet fuel blends, and this is the first report of prespatane as an alternative jet fuel.
