Analysis of the thermal reaction products of para polyphenylene by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Analysis of the volatiles and sublimate produced when para-polyphenylene is pyrolyzed to constant weight under vacuum in the temperature range from 380 to 1000 C indicates that the polymer undergoes thermal degradation in two stages. The first stage involved dehydrohalogenation, which is essentially a curing reaction that produces crosslinking between polyphenylene chains resulting from the loss of chlorine from the polymer in the form of hydrogen chloride. The second stage of the thermal degradation is dehydrogenation because hydrogen is the major volatile species. Increasing amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (phenanthrene and 9, 10 benzphenanthrene) in the sublimate, concomitant with increasing C/H ratios of the polymeric residue with pyrolysis temperature, is consistent with the buildup of polynuclear structures in the polymer matrix.

Computerized X-ray reconstruction tomography in stereometric analysis of cardiovascular dynamics

A computerized technique is proposed for obtaining cross-sectional images of the dynamic spatial distribution of X-ray attenuation covering the entire anatomic extent of the thorax and its contents in living dogs with a resolution of 1 mm and at time intervals of 1/60 sec. Use is made of an X-ray imaging chain which is a new high-performance video-fluoroscopic system, unique in its design and construction and called SSDSR for single source dynamic spatial reconstructor. This dynamic spatial reconstruction system is shown to provide the temporally and spatially coherent multiple cross sections required to obtain the full three-dimensional anatomic and simultaneous hemodynamic information necessary for detailed quantitative analyses of regional cardiopulmonary and vascular functions in both basic investigations of animals and clinical diagnostic applications to patients. Numerous photographs supplement the text.

Theoretical investigation of protonated carbon dioxide

The equilibrium structure of CO2H(+) has been obtained from self-consistent field and configuration interaction wave functions. Only one stable form has been found, a linear O-C-O chain with the hydrogen bonded to oxygen and slightly off axis, in analogy with known isoelectronic species. A second structure protonated at carbon, which has been inferred from mass spectrometric studies, is found to be unstable with respect to spontaneous rearrangement. The proton affinity of CO2 is calculated to be 136 kcal/mole, in reasonable agreement with the most recent experimental value.

Nonlinear viscoelasticity and relaxation phenomena of polymer solids

In the light of a three-chain model of statistical network theories of rubberlike elastic models, it is assumed that the free energy function of incompressible viscoelastic polymer solids is a separable, symmetric function of the principle stretch ratios and the hidden thermodynamic coordinates along the same directions. This assumption leads to a characterization of those viscoelastic polymer solids which exhibit the property of factorizability between the time and strain functions.

Electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of the tetrathiafulvalene /TTF/ pseudohalides, /TTF/12/SCN/7 and /TTF/12/SeCN/7

The electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of charge-transfer salts containing tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and the pseudohalides, thiocyanate (SCN) and selenocyanate (SeCN), have been investigated. These salts are quasi-one-dimensional compounds containing cation radicals only, in contrast to a cation-radical-anion-radical system, such as tetrathiafulvalene tetracyanoquinodimethane (TTF) (TCNQ). Measurements of electrical conductivity, thermoelectric power, and optical reflectivity of single crystals of the nonstoichiometric salts (TTF)12(SCN)7 and (TTF)12(SeCN)7 show metal-like characteristics above 200 K (high-temperature region). The conductivities at room temperature are approximately 750 mho/cm comparable to those found in (TTF) (TCNQ), and increase with decreasing temperature down to approximately 200 K. The thermoelectric power at room temperature is small and positive (approximately 9 microvolts/deg K), and decreases linearly with decreasing temperature in this region (as expected for metal-like hole conduction along the TTF chains). The ESR intensity, however, decreases with decreasing temperature above 200 K. At 170 K a metal-nonmetal transition occurs, and the transport and magnetic properties below this temperature are characteristic of a semiconducting state.

Polymers with complexing properties. Simple poly(amino acids)

The free amino (0.3 equiv/residue) and carboxyl (0.5 equiv/residue) groups of thermal polylysine increased dramatically on treatment with distilled water. The total hydrolysis of such a polymer was abnormal in that only about 50% of the expected amino acids were recovered. Poly (lysine-co-alanine-co-glycine) under usual conditions hydrolyzed completely in 8 hours; whereas, when it was pretreated with diazomethane, a normal period of 24 hours was required to give (nearly) the same amounts of each free amino acid as compared with those obtained from the untreated polymer. The amino groups of the basic thermal poly(amino acids) were sterically hindered. The existence of nitrogen atoms linking two or three chains and reactive groups (anhydride, imine) were proposed.

Electronic instability and change of crystalline phase in compounds of the V3Si type at low temperature

In V3Si, the V atoms form an array of dense linear chains; a tight-binding approximation in one dimension was used to describe the d electrons. The electronic energy calculated by this method was reduced when the lattice is deformed. This lead to a band type of the Jahn Teller effect, which may explain the cubic to tetragonal transition which was observed at low temperatures. The theory can be extended to other superconductors of the V3X type when X=Ga, Ge, Sn, etcetera, or NB3SN.

On reliable control system designs

A mathematical model for use in the design of reliable multivariable control systems is discussed with special emphasis on actuator failures and necessary actuator redundancy levels. The model consists of a linear time invariant discrete time dynamical system. Configuration changes in the system dynamics are governed by a Markov chain that includes transition probabilities from one configuration state to another. The performance index is a standard quadratic cost functional, over an infinite time interval. The actual system configuration can be deduced with a one step delay. The calculation of the optimal control law requires the solution of a set of highly coupled Riccati-like matrix difference equations. Results can be used for off-line studies relating the open loop dynamics, required performance, actuator mean time to failure, and functional or identical actuator redundancy, with and without feedback gain reconfiguration strategies.

Monte Carlo simulation of the classical two-dimensional one component plasma

Monte Carlo simulation, lattice dynamics in the harmonic approximation, and solution of the hypernetted chain equation were used to study the classical two-dimensional one component plasma. The system consists of a single species of charged particles immersed in a uniform neutralizing background. The particles interact via a l/r potential, where r is the two dimensional separation. Equations of state were calculated for both the liquid and solid phases. Results of calculation of the thermodynamic functions and one and two particle correlation functions are presented.

Process for spinning flame retardant elastomeric compositions

Flame retardant elastomeric compositions comprised of either spandex type polyurethane having halogen containing polyols incorporated into the polymer chain, conventional spandex type polyurethanes in physical admixture with flame retardant additives, or fluoroelastomeric resins in physical admixture with flame retardant additives were developed. Methods are described for preparing fibers of the flame retardant elastomeric materials and manufactured articles as well as nonelastic materials such as polybenzimidazoles, fiberglass, and nylons, for high oxygen environments.

The capability of satellite borne remote sensors to measure stratospheric trace constituents. Volume 2: Ozone and aerosol related missions

Stratospheric trace constituent measurement requirements are separated into two somewhat overlapping areas. In the first area, it is assumed that the only problem of interest is ozone; its chemistry chain, environmental effects and measurement requirements. In like manner, in the second area it is assumed that the only problem of interest is stratospheric aerosols; their chemistry, effects and measurement requirements.

Viking Observations of Phobos and Deimos: Preliminary Results

The improved resolution of the Viking images has led to the discovery of a number of unusual surface features on Phobos. The features include elongated rill-like depressions associated with the crater Stickney, chains and clusters of irregular elongated craters, and linear striations or grooves. Crater counts are also considered. A total of 27 craters ranging in size from 0.3 to 1.4 km are visible on the best Deimos frame available. Craters ranging from 50 m to 4.9 km in diameter can be observed on the best of the Phobos images.

The geopotential in nonsingular orbital elements

Singularities are eliminated from the geopotential and its partial derivatives for zero eccentricity and inclination, and an expression for the geopotential expansion based entirely on nonsingular orbital elements is developed. The argument relies on the treatments of the geopotential function given by Izsak (1964), Allan (1965) and Kaula (1966); the geopotential expansion developed does not involve mixed variables, and therefore does not require the chain rule to formulate the Lagrange planetary equations. The need for recursion relations to be used in conjunction with the nonsingular version of the geopotential expansion is also mentioned.

Results of ionization measurements in the middle atmosphere

Positive-ion electrical-conductivity measurements, which are now performed with 4-cm diameter meteorological rocket payloads, provide a simple means of monitoring the NO concentration in the mesosphere, as well as the ionization variability. A wavelike dynamical structure is observed at low latitudes. Parachute-borne Gerdien mobility analyzers show, in addition, ion mobility spectra which spread from much greater to much less than that expected for simple gas-phase ions in the mesosphere and also indicate an ion clustering chain in the stratosphere. Large particulate ions apparently form in the daytime and grow very large at night. An instrument combining the mobility analyzer with a flashing source of ionizing radiation could be used as an NO(x) spectrometer.

Thermal alteration experiments on organic matter in recent marine sediments as a model for petroleum genesis

The fate of naturally occurring lipids and pigments in a marine sediment exposed to elevated temperatures was studied. Samples of a young marine sediment from Tanner Basin, California, were heated to a series of temperatures (65-200 C) for varying periods of time (7-64 days). The sediment was analyzed prior to and after heating for pigments, isoprenoid compounds, alcohols, fatty acids, and hydrocarbons. Structural changes caused by heating unextractable organic material (kerogen) were also studied, and the significance of the results for understanding petroleum genesis is considered. Among other results, fatty acids and hydrocarbons increased in abundance although there appeared to be no obvious precursor-to-product relationship via simple decarboxylation reactions. Chlorins were partially converted into porphyrins. The phytyl side chain of pheophytin was initially preserved intact by reduction of the phytyl double bond, but later converted to a variety of isoprenoid compounds including alkanes. Thermal grafting of components onto kerogen occurred as well as structural changes caused by heat.

Until the sun dies

This book gives a popular account of the forces that have shaped human beings into their present form and created the power of human intelligence, and considers the prospects for intelligent life on other planets in the solar system and elsewhere in the universe. The chain of events leading from the big bang to the origin of life on earth is reviewed together with the observations that established the expansion of the universe. Philosophical difficulties with the concept of a universe that has both a beginning and an end are pondered, steady-state cosmology is briefly explained, and the discovery of the relict microwave background is discussed. The formation of the solar system is recounted along with the scientific view of the origin of terrestrial life. Attention is given to the origin of cells and the evolution of oxygen-breathing life, multicelled creatures, armored animals, fishes, amphibians, early reptiles, dinosaurs, and mammals. The development of mammalian intelligence is traced from the early tree dwellers through monkeys, apes, ape men, humanoid tool makers, and primitive members of the genus Homo, to Homo sapiens. Possible evidence for the existence of life on Mars is evaluated together with prospects for communication or other contact with extraterrestrial intelligence.

Electronics for a focal plane crystal spectrometer

The HEAO-B program forced the usual constraints upon the spacecraft experiment electronics: high reliability, low power consumption, and tight packaging at reasonable cost. The programmable high voltage power supplies were unique in both application and simplicity of manufacture. The hybridized measurement chain is a modification of that used on the SAS-C program; the charge amplifier design in particular shows definite improvement in performance over previous work.
