Hund's superconductor Li(Fe,Co)As

We combine transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy to investigate several low-energy manifestations of the Hund's coupling in a canonical FeSC family Li(Fe,Co)As. We determine the doping dependence of the coherent-incoherent crossover temperature and the quasiparticle effective mass enhancement in the normal state. Furthermore, our tunneling spectroscopy result in the superconducting state supports the idea that superconductivity emerging from Hund's metal state displays a universal maximal superconducting gap vs transition temperature (2Δ max /k B T c ) value, which is independent of doping level and T c .

Dimerization and spin decoupling in a two-leg Heisenberg ladder with frustrated trimer rungs

We study the antiferromagnetic spin-half Heisenberg ladder in the presence of an additional frustrating rung spin which is motivated and relevant also for the description of real two-dimensional materials such as the two-dimensional trimer magnet Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We study the zero-temperature phase diagram, where we combine numerical and analytical methods into an overall consistent description. All numerical simulations are also accompanied by studies of the dynamical spin structure factor obtained via the density matrix renormalization group. Overall, we find in the regime of strong rung coupling a gapped dimerized phase related to competing symmetry sectors in Hilbert space that ultimately results in frustration-driven spin-Peierls transition. In the weak rung-coupling regime, the system is uniform, yet shows a gapped spinon continuum together with a sharp coherent low-energy branch which renders the system critical overall. In either case, the additional rung spin quickly get sidelined and nearly decouple in the regime when their bare coupling to the ladder is weakened

Dynamics of voltage-driven oscillating insulator-metal transitions

Recent experiments demonstrated emerging alternating insulator and metal phases in Mott insulators actuated by a direct bias voltage, leading to oscillating voltage outputs with characteristic frequencies. Here, we develop a physics-based nonequilibrium model to describe the dynamics of oscillating insulator-metal phase transitions and experimentally validate it using a VO 2 device as a prototype. The oscillation frequency is shown to scale monotonically with the bias voltage and series resistance and terminate abruptly at lower and upper device-dependent limits, which are dictated by the nonequilibrium carrier dynamics. Here, we derive an approximate analytical expression for the dependence of the frequency on the device operating parameters, which yields a fundamental limit to the frequency and may be utilized to provide guidance to potential applications of insulator-metal transition materials as building blocks of brain-inspired non-von Neumann computers.

Robust topological state against magnetic impurities observed in the superconductor PbTaSe 2

Magnetic impurities deposited on topological superconductor candidate PbTaSe 2 can introduce a nonsplitting zero-energy state inside the superconducting gap, which has been proposed as a field-free platform for topological zero modes. However, it is still unclear how robust the topological state in PbTaSe 2 is against magnetic impurities, which is related to the topological nature of the zero-energy state as well as its potential for quantum computation. In this paper, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study the topological surface state in the normal state of PbTaSe 2 under the perturbation of magnetic impurities. We visualize the quasiparticle interference (QPI) arising from the topological surface state. We then deposit Fe impurities on the surface to form atomic Fe adatoms. We find that each Fe adatom sits at a unique interstitial position on the surface and features a local state at high energies, both of which are consistent with our first-principles calculation that further reveals its large magnetic moment. Our systematic Fe deposition and subsequent measurements show that the arclike QPI pattern at the Fermi energy is robust with up to 3% Fe coverage where the atomic nature of Fe adatoms still holds. Our results provide evidence that the topological surface state at the Fermi energy in PbTaSe 2 is robust against dilute magnetic impurities.

Electronic nature of chiral charge order in the kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5

Kagome superconductors with T C up to 7 K have been discovered for over 40 y. Recently, unconventional chiral charge order has been reported in kagome superconductor KV 3 Sb 5 , with an ordering temperature of one order of magnitude higher than the T C . However, the chirality of the charge order has not been reported in the cousin kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 , and the electronic nature of the chirality remains elusive. In this paper, we report the observation of electronic chiral charge order in CsV 3 Sb 5 via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We observe a 2 × 2 charge modulation and a 1 × 4 superlattice in both topographic data and tunneling spectroscopy. 2 × 2 charge modulation is highly anticipated as a charge order by fundamental kagome lattice models at van Hove filling, and is shown to exhibit intrinsic chirality. We find that the 1 × 4 superlattices form various small domain walls, and can be a surface effect as supported by our first-principles calculations. Crucially, we find that the amplitude of the energy gap opened by the charge order exhibits real-space modulations, and features 2 × 2 wave vectors with chirality, highlighting the electronic nature of the chiral charge order. STM study at 0.4 K reveals a superconducting energy gap with a gap size 2Δ = 0.85 meV, which estimates a moderate superconductivity coupling strength with 2Δ/k B T C = 3.9. Furthermore, when further applying a c-axis magnetic field, vortex core bound states are observed within this gap, indicative of clean-limit superconductivity.

Robust antiferromagnetism in Y 2 Co 3

We report on a solution-growth based method to synthesise single crystals of Y 2 Co 3 and on its structural and magnetic properties. We find that Y 2 Co 3 crystallizes in the La 2 Ni 3 -type orthorhombic structure with space group Cmce (No. 64), with Co forming distorted kagome lattices. Y 2 Co 3 orders antiferromagnetically below TN=252 K. Magnetization measurements reveal that the moments are primarily aligned along the b axis with evidence for some canting. Band-structure calculations indicate that ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders are nearly degenerate, at odds with experimental results. Magnetization measurements under pressure up to 1 GPa reveal that the Néel temperature decreases with the slope of -1.69 K/GPa. We observe a field-induced spin-flop transition in the magnetization measurements at 1.5 K and 21 T with magnetic field along the b direction. The magnetization is not saturated up to 35 T, indicating that the antiferromagnetic ordering in Y 2 Co 3 is quite robust, which is surprising for such a Co-rich intermetallic.

Discrete quantum geometry and intrinsic spin Hall effect

We show that the quantum geometry of the Fermi surface can be numerically described by a three-dimensional discrete quantum manifold. This approach not only avoids singularities in the Fermi sea, but it also enables the precise computation of the intrinsic Hall conductivity resolved in spin, as well as any other local properties of the Fermi surface. The method assures numerical accuracy when the Fermi level is arbitrarily close to singularities, and it remains robust when Kramers degeneracy is protected by symmetry. Furthermore, the approach is demonstrated by calculating the anomalous Hall and spin Hall conductivities of a two-band lattice model of a Weyl semimetal and a full-band ab initio model of zinc-blende GaAs.

Geometry of the charge density wave in the kagome metal A V 3 Sb 5

Kagome lattice is a fertile platform for topological and intertwined electronic excitations. Recently, experimental evidence of an unconventional charge density wave (CDW) is observed in a Z 2 kagome metal AV 3 Sb 5 (A=K, Cs, Rb). This observation triggers wide interest in the interplay between frustrated crystal structure and Fermi surface instabilities. Here, we analyze the lattice effect and its impact on CDW in AV 3 Sb 5 . Based on published experimental data, we show that the 2×2×2 CDW breaks the sixfold rotational symmetry of the crystal due to the phase shift between kagome layers and can explain the twofold symmetric CDW peak intensity observed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The coupling between the lattice and electronic degrees of freedom yields a weak first-order structural transition without continuous change of lattice dynamics. Our result emphasizes the fundamental role of lattice geometry in proper understanding of unconventional electronic orders in AV 3 Sb 5 .

Interfacial electron-phonon coupling and quantum confinement in ultrathin Yb films on graphite

Interfacial electron-phonon coupling in ultrathin films has attracted much interest recently. Here, by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, we report quantized electronic states and strong interfacial electron-phonon coupling in ultrathin Yb films on graphite. We observed clear kinks in the energy-momentum dispersion of quantum well states, and the kink positions agree well with the energies of optical phonons of graphite. The extracted coupling strength λ is largest for the thinnest film with a preferred (“magic”) thickness of four monolayers and exhibits a strong band dependence, which can be qualitatively accounted for by a simple model. The interfacial electron-phonon coupling also gives rise to characteristic steplike structures in the $dI/dV$ spectra, implying dominant coupling with the phonons with zero in-plane momentum. A Lifshitz transition occurs at higher coverage, where quantum well states derived mainly from 5d electrons dominate near the Fermi level and possess large effective mass (up to ~ 19 m e ). Here our results highlight the potentially important role of interfacial electron-phonon interaction for ultrathin films and provide spectroscopic insight to understand this cross-interface fermion-boson interaction.

Robust Kagome Electronic Structure in Topological Quantum Magnets XMn 6 Sn 6 (X = Dy, Tb, Gd, Y)

Crystal geometry can greatly influence the emergent properties of quantum materials. As an example, the kagome lattice is an ideal platform to study the rich interplay between topology, magnetism, and electronic correlation. In this work, combining high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of XMn 6 Sn 6 (X=Dy,Tb,Gd,Y) family compounds. Here, we observe the Dirac fermion and the flat band arising from the magnetic kagome lattice of Mn atoms. Interestingly, the flat band locates in the same energy region in all compounds studied, regardless of their different magnetic ground states and 4f electronic configurations. These observations suggest a robust Mn magnetic kagome lattice across the XMn 6 Sn 6 family, thus providing an ideal platform for the search for, and investigation of, new emergent phenomena in magnetic topological materials.

Insulating antiferromagnetism in VTe

Here, we report a detailed theoretical and experimental study on the vanadium monotelluride VTe, which crystallizes in the NiAs hexagonal structure. First-principles calculations reveal a complex hierarchy of magnetic interactions and energy scales, with the ground state theoretically determined as an ($\frac{1}{2}$, 0, $\frac{1}{2}$) antiferromagnetic ordering with insulating character and a band gap of 0.5 eV. Experimental synthesis and characterization efforts find a substantially off-stoichiometric orthorhombic structure (a defect NiAs structure) with composition V 0.85 Te, and an apparent Néel point of some 45 K. First-principles calculations find good agreement with the observed Néel point. We also give an extended examination of the effects of off-stoichiometry on the calculated energetics, finding significant volume-related effects. Our first-principles calculations find the stoichiometric phase VTe to have a negative vanadium defect formation energy of over 1 eV, thus explaining the formation of the off-stoichiometric phase. Finally, we provide a structural explanation for the formation of defect structures in this and numerous other NiAs-structure materials.

Emergence of topological and trivial interface states in VSe 2 films coupled to Bi 2 Se 3

Coupling ordinary metals with topological Bi 2 Se 3 can instigate the long-range migration of the spin-polarized Dirac states. Instead, for trivial metallic VSe 2 films on Bi 2 Se 3 , topological and trivial Rashba-type interface states emerge, each strongly localized at the VSe 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 interface. Their rapidly decaying spectral weights are uncovered by thickness-dependent band mappings of VSe 2 films and replicated by a phenomenological first-principles model of the spectral function. In this work, the results are pertinent to spintronic devices requiring spin transmission across metal/topological insulator interfaces.

Visualizing the out-of-plane electronic dispersions in an intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides have a rich phase diagram and they feature two-dimensionality in numerous physical properties. Co 1/3 NbS 2 is one of the newest members of this family where Co atoms are intercalated into the van der Waals gaps between NbS 2 layers. Here, we study the three-dimensional electronic band structure of Co 1/3 NbS 2 using both surface and bulk sensitive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the electronic bands do not fit into the rigid band shift picture after the Co intercalation. Instead, Co 1/3 NbS 2 displays a different orbital character near the Fermi level compared to the pristine NbS 2 compound and has a clear band dispersion in the k z direction despite its layered structure. Our photoemission study demonstrates the out-of-plane electronic correlations introduced by the Co intercalation, thus offering a different perspective on this compound. Finally, we propose how Fermi level tuning could lead to exotic phases such as spin density wave instability.

Single pair of Weyl nodes in the spin-canted structure of EuCd 2 As 2

We report time reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetals are unique among Weyl materials in allowing the minimal number of Weyl points, thus offering the clearest signatures of the associated physics. Here we present neutron diffraction, density-functional theory, and transport measurement results which indicate that EuCd 2 As 2 , under ambient field, strain, and pressure, is such a material with a single pair of Weyl points. Our work reveals a magnetic structure (magnetic space group C2'/m') with Eu moments pointing along the [210] direction in plane and canted ~ 30° out of plane. Density functional theory calculations using this structure show that the observed canting drastically alters the relevant electronic bands, relative to the in-plane order, leading to a single set of well-defined Weyl points. Furthermore, we find the canting angle can tune the distance of the Weyl points above the Fermi level, with the smallest distance at low canting angles. Finally, transport measurements of the anomalous Hall effect and longitudinal magnetoresistance exhibit properties indicative of a chiral anomaly, thus supporting the neutron scattering and DFT results suggesting EuCd 2 As 2 is close to the ideal situation of the Weyl hydrogen atom.

Electron-phonon coupling in the charge density wave state of CsV 3 Sb 5

Metallic materials with kagome lattice structure are interesting because their electronic structures can host flat bands, Dirac cones, and van Hove singularities, resulting in strong electron correlations, nontrivial band topology, charge density wave (CDW), and unconventional superconductivity. Recently, kagome lattice compounds AV 3 Sb 5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) are found to have intertwined CDW order and superconductivity. The origin of the CDW has been suggested to arise from Fermi-surface instabilities of van Hove singularity (saddle point) near the M points with weak electron-phonon coupling. In this work, we use neutron scattering experiments to demonstrate that the CDW order in CsV 3 Sb 5 is associated with static lattice distortion and a sudden hardening of the $B_{3u}$ longitudinal optical phonon mode at the Brillouin zone boundary, thus establishing that the wave vector dependent electron-phonon coupling must also play an important role in the CDW order of AV 3 Sb 5 .

Persistent exchange splitting in the chiral helimagnet $\mathrm{Cr}_{1/3}\mathrm{NbS}_2$

Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of the chiral helimagnet Cr 1/3 NbS 2 and its temperature evolution. The comparison with NbS 2 suggests that the electronic structure of Cr 1/3 NbS 2 is strongly modified by the intercalation of Cr atoms. Our ab initio calculation, consistent with experimental results, suggests strong hybridization between Nb- and Cr-derived states near the Fermi level. In the chiral helimagnetic state (below the Curie temperature, T c ), we observe exchange splitting of the energy bands crossing the Fermi level, which follows the temperature evolution of the magnetic moment, suggesting a strong interaction between the conduction electrons and Cr spin moments. Interestingly, the exchange splitting persists far above T c with weak temperature dependence, in drastic contrast to the itinerant ferromagnetism described by the Stoner model, indicating the existence of short-range magnetic order. Our results provide important insights into the interplay between the electronic structure and magnetism in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 , which is helpful for understanding the microscopic mechanism of chiral helimagnetic ordering.

Evidence for electronic signature of a magnetic transition in the topological magnet HoSbTe

Topological insulators with intrinsic magnetic order are emerging as an exciting platform to realize fundamentally new excitations from topological quantum states of matter. To study these systems and their physics, people have proposed a variety of magnetic topological insulator systems, including HoSbTe, an antiferromagnetic weak topological insulator candidate. Here, in this work, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to probe the electronic structure of HoSbTe with antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic orders that are tuned by applying an external magnetic field. Although around the Fermi energy we find minor differences between the quasiparticle interferences under the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders, deep inside the valance region, a quasiparticle interference signal emerges with ferromagnetism. This observation is consistent with our first-principles calculations indicating the magnetism-driven transition of the electronic states in this spin-orbit coupled topological magnet.

Competing magnetic and nonmagnetic states in monolayer VSe 2 with charge density wave

The field of two-dimensional ferromagnets has been reinvigorated by the discovery of VSe 2 monolayer grown on van der Waals substrates, which is reported to be ferromagnetic with a Curie point higher than 330 K. However, the ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states of pristine monolayer VSe 2 are highly debated. Here, employing density functional theory, Wannier function calculations, and the band unfolding method, we explore the electronic structure of monolayer VSe 2 with a $\sqrt{3} × \sqrt{7}$ charge density wave (CDW). Certain qualitative aspects of the calculated unfolded band dispersion and unfolded Fermi surface of monolayer VSe 2 with the $\sqrt{3} × \sqrt{7}$ CDW in the nonmagnetic state agree well with previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results, albeit with uncertainty about whether these experiments probed single or multiple domains. Specifically, we find that an isolated CDW domain naturally induces a strong breaking of the threefold symmetry of the electronic structure. In addition we find that, relative to the undistorted structure, the CDW structure shows a strong competition between nonmagnetic and various magnetic states, with an energy difference less than 5 meV/f.u. For the CDW structure in the antiferromagnetic state, the band dispersions and Fermi surface are similar to those in the nonmagnetic state, while the unfolded bands of the ferromagnetic CDW state display a sizable exchange splitting. These results indicate the possibility of various antiferromagnetic fluctuations in VSe 2 to coexist and compete with ferromagnetic order and the experimentally reported CDW order. In this work, our calculations build insights for exploring the interplay between magnetism and CDW behaviors more generally in transition metal dichalcogenides.
