Theoretical study of the A prime 5Sigma(+)g and C double prime 5Pi u states of N2 - Implications for the N2 afterglow

Theoretical spectroscopic constants are reported for the A prime 5Sigma(+)g and C double prime 5Pi u states of N2 based on CASSCF/MRCI calculations using large ANO Gaussian basis sets. The calculated A prime Sigma(+)g potential differs qualitatively from previous calculations in that the inner well is significantly deeper (De = 3450/cm). This deeper well provides considerable support for the suggestion of Berkowitz et al. (1956) that A prime 5Sigma(+)g is the primary precursor state involved in the yellow Lewis-Rayleigh afterglow of N2.

U-Th-Pb, Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr, and Lu-Hf systematics of returned Mars samples

The advantage of studying returned planetary samples cannot be overstated. A wider range of analytical techniques with higher sensitivities and accuracies can be applied to returned samples. Measurement of U-Th-Pb, Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr, and Lu-Hf isotopic systematics for chronology and isotopic tracer studies of planetary specimens cannot be done in situ with desirable precision. Returned Mars samples will be examined using all the physical, chemical, and geologic methods necessary to gain information on the origin and evolution of Mars. A returned Martian sample would provide ample information regarding the accretionary and evolutionary history of the Martian planetary body and possibly other planets of our solar system.

U-Pb zircon geochronology and evolution of some Adirondack meta-igneous rocks

An update was presented of the recent U-Pb isotope geochronology and models for evolution of some of the meta-igneous rocks of the Adirondacks, New York. Uranium-lead zircon data from charnockites and mangerites and on baddeleyite from anorthosite suggest that the emplacement of these rocks into a stable crust took place in the range 1160 to 1130 Ma. Granulite facies metamorphism was approximately 1050 Ma as indicated by metamorphic zircon and sphene ages of the anorthosite and by development of magmatitic alaskitic gneiss. The concentric isotherms that are observed in this area are due to later doming. However, an older contact metamorphic aureole associated with anorthosite intrusion is observed where wollastonite develops in metacarbonates. Zenoliths found in the anorthosite indicate a metamorphic event prior to anorthosite emplacement. The most probable mechanism for anorthosite genesis is thought to be ponding of gabbroic magmas at the Moho. The emplacement of the anorogenic anorthosite-mangerite-charnockite suite was apparently bracketed by compressional orogenies.

Composite laminate free-edge reinforcement with U-shaped caps. I - Stress analysis. II - Theoretical-experimental correlation

The present generalized plane-strain FEM analysis for the prediction of interlaminar normal stress reduction when a U-shaped cap is bonded to the edge of a composite laminate gives attention to the highly variable transverse stresses near the free edge, cap length and thickness, and a gap under the cap due to the manufacturing process. The load-transfer mechanism between cap and laminate is found to be strain-compatibility, rather than shear lag. In the second part of this work, the three-dimensional composite material failure criteria are used in a progressive laminate failure analysis to predict failure loads of laminates with different edge-cap designs; symmetric 11-layer graphite-epoxy laminates with a one-layer cap of kevlar-epoxy are shown to carry 130-140 percent greater loading than uncapped laminates, under static tensile and tension-tension fatigue loading.

Phase diagram of the two-dimensional negative-U Hubbard model

Theoretical arguments and numerical calculations are used to discuss the phase diagram of the two-dimensional negative-U Hubbard model. The results are consistent with (1) a vanishing transition temperature at half-filling but with a ground state having both superconducting and charge-density-wave long-range order, and (2) a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at a finite temperature into a superconducting state with power-law decay of the pairing correlations away from half-filling.

Theoretical study of the far-infrared A 3Sigma(-)g - X 3Pi(u) transition in Al2

The transition between the X 3Pi(u) ground state of Al2 and the first excited state A 3Sigma(-)g is investigated theoretically by means of CASSCF computations. The Einstein coefficients are determined on the basis of the potentials published by Bauschlicher et al. (1989) and listed in a table. The problems involved in devising an experiment to verify the theoretical results are briefly considered.

U-Th-Pb isotopic systematics of lunar norite 78235

A pristine high-Mg noritic cumulate thought to be relict deep-seated lunar crust is studied with an eye to obtaining evidence of initial Pb isotopic composition and U/Pb ratios of early lunar magma sources and possibly of a primary magma ocean. A leaching procedure was conducted on polymineralic separates to assure the removal of secondary Pb components. The Pb from leached separates do not form a linear trend on the Pb-Pb diagram, indicating open-system behavior either from mixtures of Pb or postcrystallization disturbances. Calculated initial Pb compositions and corresponding U-238/Pb-204 (mu) values are presented, with the assumption of reasonably precise radiometric ages from the literature for norite 78236. The results obtained support the contention that high-Mg suite rocks are coeval with the ferroan anorthosites, both being produced during the earliest stages of lunar evolution.

Electron impact excitation and dissociation of N2 via the b 1Pi(u) state

Electron impact excitation of the b 1Pi(u) state in N2 plays a prominent role in the dissociation of the molecule and thus in the production of atomic nitrogen in planetary atmospheres. Electron impact excitation cross sections combined with electron-impact-induced fluorescence measurements can yield the corresponding dissociation cross sections. Serious discrepancies exist among excitation cross sections reported in the literature. To clarify the situation, these cross sections were measured at two impact energies using electron energy loss spectroscopy. The new results are in agreement with recent values deduced from optical measurements and fall midway between previous results which are too high or low by factors of 2.

U-Pb isotopic results for single shocked and polycrystalline zircons record 550-65.5-Ma ages for a K-T target site and 2700-1850-Ma ages for the Sudbury impact event

The refractory mineral zircon develops distinct morphological features during shock metamorphism and retains these features under conditions that would anneal them in other minerals. In addition, weakly shocked zircon grains give primary ages for the impact site, while highly reconstituted (polycrystalline) single grains give ages that approach the age of the impact event. Data for a series of originally coeval grains will define a mixing line that gives both of these ages providing that no subsequent geological disturbances have overprinted the isotopic systematics. In this study, we have shown that the three zircon grain types described by Bohor, from both K-T distal ejecta (Fireball layer, Raton Basin, Colorado) and the Onaping Formation, represent a progressive increase in impact-related morphological change that coincides with a progressive increase in isotopic resetting in zircons from the ejecta and basement rocks. Unshocked grains are least affected by isotopic resetting while polycrystalline grains are most affected. U-Pb isotopic results for 12 of 14 single zircon grains from the Fireball layer plot on or close to a line recording a primary age of 550 +/- 10 Ma and a secondary age of 65.5 +/- 3 Ma. Data for the least and most shocked grains plot closest to the primary and secondary ages respectively. The two other grains each give ages between 300 and 350 Ma. This implies that the target ejecta was dominated by 550-Ma rocks and that the recrystallization features of the zircon were superimposed during the impact event at 65.5 Ma. A predominant age of 550 Ma for zircons from the Fireball layer provides an excellent opportunity to identify the impact site and to test the hypothesis that multiple impacts occurred at this time. A volcanic origin for the Fireball layer is ruled out by shock-related morphological changes in zircon and the fact that the least shocked grains are old. Basement Levack gneisses north of the Sudbury structure have a primary age of 2711 Ma. Data for three single zircons from this rock, which record a progressive increase in shock features, are displaced 24, 36, and 45 percent along a Pb-loss line toward the 1850 +/- 1 Ma minimum age for the impact as defined by the age of the norite. Southeast of the structure three shocked grains from the Murray granite record a primary age of 2468 Ma and are displaced 24, 41, and 56 percent toward the 1853 +/- 4 Ma even as defined by coexisting titanite.

UV and X-ray emission in the interacting binary U Cephei

The active close binary U Cep has been monitored in the ultraviolet, using IUE, during 1.25 orbital cycles. The emission spectrum at the bottom of the primary total eclipse confirms earlier suggestions of an unexpected absence of the Hell 1640 A line. Stronger than expected emission in some other lines like NV, CII, CIV or AlIII, indicative of hot plasma, points out that some important differences still remain between the active components of RS CVn-type binaries and the mass-losing components of semidetached Algols. Simultaneous X-ray measurements, carried out with GINGA, indicated a low upper limit flux in the observed energy range (1 to 10 keV). A comparison with other binary systems or isolated stars is discussed in order to understand the obtained results.

Predissociation linewidths in O2 B3Sigma-sub-u(-) (v = 0,2)

Results are presented of measurements of the rotational and fine-structure level-specific linewidths in v = 0 and v = 2 of the O2 B3Sigma-sub-u(-) state, which were carried out using laser-induced fluorescence techniques applied to Schumann-Runge absorption transitions from vibrationally excited O2 X3Sigma-sub-g(-) system. These linewidths represent the first measurements reflecting relative predissociation rates among the B-state levels. The linewidths were found to vary considerably among the various energy levels.

Electron excitation of the H2(a 3Sigma(g)(+) - b 3Sigma(u)(+)) continuum in the vacuum ultraviolet

The electron excitation function for the H2(a 3Sigma(g)(+) - b 3Sigma(u)(+)) continuum emission has been measured from 11 to 30 eV at 195.0 nm. The emission cross, section data have been combined with electron energy loss cross section measurements to extend the experimental data to 60 eV. The excitation cross section has been estimated by normalizing the data to the electron energy loss cross section at 20 eV and using a model to account for emission from the entire band system. The spin forbidden excitation of the a 3Sigma(g)(+) state is a major dissociative channel of H2 at low energy with a peak cross section of 1.7 +/- 0.85 x 10 exp -17 sq cm at 15.5 eV. The FWHM of the cross section is 7 eV. The high energy dependence of the cross section has a rapid 1/E-cubed fall off with electron energy, E, above 50 eV. A modified Born approximation analysis was applied to the data to provide an analytic model.

U-band CCD surface brightness profiles for candidate collapsed-core globular clusters

We have determined U-band CCD surface brightness profiles for 15 of the 21 globular clusters that have been characterized as having 'collapsed' cores by Djorgovski and King (1986). We have fitted these profiles with two types of seeing-convolved models: single-mass King models and power laws. We find that in many cases the characterization of a profile as being either 'King' or 'cusp' is somewhat subtle. Of the clusters in our sample, 10 appear to have central power-law cusps with either unresolved or marginally resolved cores, three appear to have resolved cores with surrounding power-law structure that is unlike a King model, and two are approximately described by King model fits. The observed power-law cusps are consistent with the predictions of Fokker-Planck models for core-collapse.

This report describes a series of tests made on a 1/40-scale model of the U. S. Airship "Akron" (ZRS-4) for the purpose of determining the drag, lift, and pitching moments of the bare hull and of the hull equipped with two different sets of fins. Measurements were also made of the elevator forces and hinge moments.

Pressure-Distribution Measurements on the Hull and Fins of a 1/40-Scale Model of the U. S. Airship "Akron."

This report presents the results of measurements of pressure distribution conducted in the propeller-research wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics on a 1/40-scale model of the U. S. Airship "Akron" (ZRS-4). The pressures, which were measured simultaneously at nearly 400 orifices located at 26 stations along one side of the hull, were recorded by two photographic multiple manometers placed inside the model. The hull pressures were measured both with and without the tail surfaces and the control car for eight angles of pitch varying from 0 degree to 20 degrees and at air speeds of approximately 70 and 100 miles per hour. The pressures were also measured at approximately 160 orifices on one horizontal fin for the above speeds and pitch angles and for nine elevator angles.

Ground-Handling Forces on a 1/40-scale Model of the U. S. Airship "Akron."

This report presents the results of full-scale wind tunnel tests conducted to determine the ground-handling forces on a 1/40-scale model of the U. S. Airship "Akron." Ground-handling conditions were simulated by establishing a velocity gradient above a special ground board in the tunnel comparable with that encountered over a landing field. The tests were conducted at Reynolds numbers ranging from 5,000,000 to 19,000,000 at each of six angles of yaw between 0 degree and 180 degrees and at four heights of the model above the ground board. The ground-handling forces vary greatly with the angle of yaw and reach large values at appreciable angles of yaw. Small changes in height, pitch, or roll did not critically affect the forces on the model. In the range of Reynolds numbers tested, no significant variation of the forces with the scale was disclosed.
