Determination of photoionization branching ratios and total photoionization cross sections at 304 A from experimental ionospheric photoelectron fluxes

High-resolution measurements of the ionospheric photoelectron spectrum are used to derive photoionization cross sections and branching ratios for N2 and O at 304 A, the wavelength of the intense He II solar radiation. Based on a theory in which the measured fluxes at energies 22.5, 24.5, 25.5 and 27.5 eV are determined by the ratio of the production rate and the loss rate coefficient, values are obtained for the ratio of molecular nitrogen density to atomic oxygen density as a function of altitude, the sum of the total photoionization cross sections, the 2P/4S and 2D/4S branching ratios for O and the B/X and A/X branching ratios for N2 photoionization and the ratios and the interspecies cross section ratios 2D/A, 4S/X and 2P/B. The values obtained are in accord with the photoionization cross sections of Kirby et al. (1979).

Total ozone variations 1970-74 using Backscattered Ultraviolet /BUV/ and ground-based observations

The most long-lived satellite set of ozone observations, to date, is that derived from the Backscatter Ultraviolet (BUV) ozone sensor on Nimbus 4 and extends from April 1970 through 1976. Unfortunately, this experiment suffered spacecraft power limitations which limited the spatial and temporal coverage and also appears to have suffered from long-term drifts which may be associated with changes in the instrument characteristics or the incident solar flux. Techniques have been developed to account for these problems, and this paper presents results of the BUV total ozone variations and compares them with those from ground-based observations, specifically the computations of Angell and Korshover (1978). After adjustments for the spatial gaps and comparison with concurrent Dobson ground-based observations, no significant trend was found in the BUV data over the years 1970-74. This finding is in contrast to a general decrease of about 2% during the same period appearing in the data of Angell and Korshover. The difference in these results is discussed in terms of the geographic sampling and the methods of hemispheric integration.

Preliminary results of an intercomparison of total ozone spectrophotometers

Preliminary results from an intercomparison of five total ozone spectrophotometers are presented. These are the Dobson spectrophotometer, the USSR M-83 ozonometer, the Canterbury filter photometer, the SenTran Company filter photometer, and the Brewer grating spectrophotometer. The pertinent characteristics of each are described, and conclusions are drawn about the agreement of each instrument's measurements with the Dobson's values over a time period of nearly one year. A discussion of the importance of calibration and long-term stability and reliability is included.

Seasonal variations of total ozone revealed by the Nimbus-4 BUV data set

Backscattered ultraviolet (BUV) data from the Nimbus-4 spacecraft for the period 1970-1977 have been processed to a refined level. The seasonal and interannual variations of total ozone are examined on a global scale, using daily zonal means of 10 deg latitude bands and a time-latitude cross section. A harmonic analysis was performed on the daily zonal means and the amplitude, days of peak ozone values, and percentage of variance were computed for the annual, semiannual and higer harmonics for several years and each year. A clear quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) was revealed from the tropics to midlatitudes after removing the mean annual wave. Asymmetries in the annual wave in the two hemispheres found earlier for the period 1970-1972 persist through the entire observation period. Interannual variations appear to be the result of the QBO of ozone from low to midlatitudes. Asymmetries in the QBO amplitude phase, and period were also detected in the two hemispheres.

Quasi-biennial variations in zonal mean total columnar ozone derived from 7 years of BUV data

A study is conducted of the quasi-biennial oscillations (QBO) variations in zonal mean total columnar ozone, taking into account seven years of Nimbus 4 backscattered ultraviolet (BUV) measurements. The data analysis technique employed is briefly discussed, and theoretical results reported by Reed (1964) are reviewed. The BUV results are compared with the theoretical expectations and Dobson-derived results. In the tropics, the results are found to be in agreement with the theoretical study of Reed. This agreement suggests that the principal effect is through quasi-biennial variations in Hadley cell strength. Favorable comparisons are found between the BUV results and the results based on Dobson data.

Total ozone-solar activity relationship

Approximately six years of global ozone monthly mean data from the Nimbus 4 BUV instrument are compared with monthly values of solar activity using 10.7-cm flux, F(10.7), as a parameter. Several techniques are explored in calculating the correlation between the two data sets, and all are found to yield relatively high correlations, ranging from R = 0.68 for 'raw' monthly means to 0.94 using a six-month running mean for each data set. It is shown, however, that the bulk of the correlation derives from the long-term decreasing trends in both data sets. When the long-term trends are removed, a cross-correlation analysis produces a maximum with no phase shift or with the ozone variations leading the solar variations by one month, thereby reducing the likelihood of a cause and effect relationship on time scales of this order. In view of the current uncertainty in the long-term stability of the BUV instrument and the resulting uncertainty in any long-term trend derived from its data, it is considered unrealistic to draw firm conclusions about a solar cycle influence on total ozone from this satellite data set.

An automated process sequence using preformed cell contacts and interconnects with a total cost of $0.64 per peak watt in 1986

A process sequence is described which utilizes a preformed metal mesh electrostatically bonded to each cell to provide the front contact. Cells of 12 percent AM1 efficiency have been produced using this scheme. This method also permits access to both contacts on the cell from the back side. In addition, low cost cell interconnection is accomplished using a flexible 'printed circuit' sheet which is ultrasonically bonded to the cell contacts. The complete process sequence as well as automated equipment which also uses ion implantation and pulse annealing is described. The total cost for module fabrication is estimated at $0.64 per peak watt for a 30 MW/year plant.

Submillimeter extensions of the solar limb determined from observations of the total eclipse of 1981 July 31

First results are presented of observations of a lunar occultation of the solar limb made from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory in the 30 micrometr, 50 micrometer, 100 micrometer, and 200 micrometer continuum during the total solar eclipse of 1981 July 31. The solar limb was extended at the longer wavelengths up to 1000 km higher than predicted from smooth plane-parallel chromospheric models. Results at both second and third contact show the infrared limb extensions to be approximately 0".8, 1"5, 2".5 and 3".0 above the visible limb in the observed bands, respectively. A possible interpretation proposes chromospheric fine structure inhomogeneities of greater density than presently incorporated in models of the middle chromosphere.

Ozone climatology series. Volume 1: Atlas of total ozone, April 1970 - December 1976

Contours and gridded values are given for seven years of monthly mean total ozone data derived from observations with the Backscattered Ultraviolet instrument on Nimbus-4 for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The instrument, algorithm, uncertainties in derived ozone and systematic changes in the bias with respect to the international groundbased ozone network of Dobson instruments, are discussed.

Implicit Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) schemes for steady-state calculations

The application of a new implicit unconditionally stable high resolution total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme to steady state calculations. It is a member of a one parameter family of explicit and implicit second order accurate schemes developed by Harten for the computation of weak solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws. This scheme is guaranteed not to generate spurious oscillations for a nonlinear scalar equation and a constant coefficient system. Numerical experiments show that this scheme not only has a rapid convergence rate, but also generates a highly resolved approximation to the steady state solution. A detailed implementation of the implicit scheme for the one and two dimensional compressible inviscid equations of gas dynamics is presented. Some numerical computations of one and two dimensional fluid flows containing shocks demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of this new scheme.

Heavy-ion total and absorption cross sections above 25 MeV/nucleon

Within the context of a double-folding optical potential approximation to the exact nucleus-nucleus multiple-scattering series, eikonal scattering theory is used to generate tables of heavy ion total and absorption cross sections at incident kinetic energies above 25 MeV/nucleon for use in cosmic ray high-energy heavy ion transport and shielding studies. Comparisons of predictions with nucleus-nucleus experimental data show excellent agreement except at the lowest energies, where the eikonal approximation may not be completely valid. Even at the lowest energies, however, agreement is typically within 20 percent.

A total life prediction model for stress concentration sites

Fatigue crack growth tests were performed on center crack panels and radial crack hole samples. The data were reduced and correlated with the elastic parameter-K taking into account finite width and corner crack corrections. The anomalous behavior normally associated with short cracks was not observed. Total life estimates for notches were made by coupling an initiation life estimate with a propagation life estimate.

Application of second-order-accurate Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) schemes to the Euler equations in general geometries

A one-parameter family of explicit and implicit second-order-accurate, entropy satisfying, total variation diminishing (TVD) schemes was developed by Harten. These TVD schemes were the property of not generating spurious oscillations for one-dimensional nonlinear scalar hyperbolic conservation laws and constant coefficient hyperbolic systems. Application of these methods to one- and two-dimensional fluid flows containing shocks (in Cartesian coordinates) yields highly accurate nonoscillatory numerical solutions. The goal of this work is to expand these methods to the multidimensional Euler equations in generalized coordinate systems. Some numerical results of shock waves impinging on cylindrical bodies are compared with MacCormack's method.

Imaging performance of annular apertures. IV - Apodization and point spread functions. V - Total and partial energy integral functions

Reference is made to a study by Tschunko (1979) in which it was discussed how apodization modifies the modulation transfer function for various central obstruction ratios. It is shown here how apodization, together with the central obstruction ratio, modifies the point spread function, which is the basic element for the comparison of imaging performance and for the derivation of energy integrals and other functions. At high apodization levels and lower central obstruction (less than 0.1), new extended radial zones are formed in the outer part of the central ring groups. These transmutation of the image functions are of more than theoretical interest, especially if the irradiance levels in the outer ring zones are to be compared to the background irradiance levels. Attention is then given to the energy distribution in point images generated by annular apertures apodized by various transmission functions. The total energy functions are derived; partial energy integrals are determined; and background irradiance functions are discussed.

Grabens, basin tectonics, and the maximum total expansion of the moon

Information from lunar grabens is used to address the question of whether the grabens and wrinkle ridges are tectonic or volcanic in origin. The geometry of simple grabens is discussed, and the kinematics and mechanics are addressed in terms of an elastic response model, a brittle response model, the mechanics of the megaregolith, and total extension for all lunar grabens. Constraints on the thermal evolution of the moon are considered, including thermal history calculations and grabens in space and time. Mare basin tectonics is discussed in terms of two kinematic models/ subsidence by increased radius of curvature and subsidence with no increase in radius of curvature. It is concluded that the observable geological history of the moon is inconsistent with any significant expansion of the moon since about 3.9 billion years ago. Both thermal and tectonic models of lunar evolution are critized.

Evidence for quasi-periodic components in Dobson network total ozone records

Power spectrum analysis has been applied to the total ozone time series at each of a sample of Dobson stations with records of more than 15 years in the interval 1957 to 1981. The distributions of strongly periodic or quasiperiodic signals in these spectral estimates, for three spectral estimators and two levels of confidence, show distinct features. These appear at the previously known or suspected periods of 3.5-4.0 years, 27 months, and 21 months as well as the previously unreported period of 11.5 months. Possible geophysical implications are discussed.

Sighting of El Chichon sulfur dioxide clouds with the Nimbus 7 total ozone mapping spectrometer

The eruptions of El Chichon volcano on March 28 and April 3 and 4, 1982 were observed by the Nimbus 7 total ozone mapping spectrometer due to strong absorption by volcanic gases at the shortest wavelengths of the spectrometer (312.5 and 317.5 nm). These ultraviolet pictures permit a measurement of the volume, dispersion, and drift of volcanic gas clouds. The tropospheric clouds were rapidly dispersed in westerly winds while persistent stratospheric clouds drifted in easterly winds at speeds up to 13 m/sec. The spectral reflectance is consistent with sulfur dioxide absorption and rules out carbon disulfide as a major constituent. A preliminary estimate of the mass of sulfur dioxide deposited in the stratosphere by the large eruptions on April 3 and 4 is 3.3 million tons. Prior estimates of volcanic cloud volume were based on extrapolation of locally measured sulfur dioxide concentrations.
