Ducted fuel injection

Various technologies presented herein relate to heating a fuel and enhancing fuel and charge-gas mixing inside a combustion chamber to enable minimal, or no, generation of soot and/or other undesired emissions during ignition and subsequent combustion of the locally premixed mixtures. To enable sufficient mixing of the fuel and charge-gas, a jet of fuel can be directed to pass through a bore of a duct causing charge-gas to be drawn into the bore creating turbulence to mix the fuel and the drawn charge-gas. The duct can be heated to provision heating of the fuel and charge-gas mixture. The duct can be located proximate to an opening in a tip of a fuel injector. An ignition assist component can be located downstream of the duct to facilitate ignition of the fuel/charge-gas mixture.

Methods and devices configured to operated scanning tunneling microscopes using out-of-bandwidth frequency components added to bias voltage and related software

In the system and method disclosed, an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip is used to selectively desorb hydrogen atoms from the Si(100)-2X1:H surface by injecting electrons at a negative sample bias voltage. A new lithography method is disclosed that allows the STM to operate under imaging conditions and simultaneously desorb H atoms as required. A high frequency signal is added to the negative sample bias voltage to deliver the required energy for hydrogen removal. The resulted current at this frequency and its harmonics are filtered to minimize their effect on the operation of the STM's feedback loop. This approach offers a significant potential for controlled and precise removal of hydrogen atoms from a hydrogen-terminated silicon surface and thus may be used for the fabrication of practical silicon-based atomic-scale devices.

Algal harvesting and water filtration

Systems for algae-based water filtration and algae harvesting are described herein. A flow-way comprises a channel and a divider positioned within the channel that separates the channel into sub-channels. The flow-way further includes an algal growth that grows on a sidewall of the channel and/or the divider. The algal growth can be established in the flow-way by positioning a pre-seeded mesh element within the channel, the pre-seeded mesh element having an algae culture growing thereon prior to positioning the pre-seeded mesh within the channel. A harvesting system comprises a hinged container that includes a straining screen. The hinged container is positioned downstream from a flow-way and receives water from the flow-way. Biomass in the water is strained by and accumulates on the screen. Weight of the accumulated biomass causes the hinged container to tip and deposit the accumulated biomass in a second container.

Design and Use of a Penetrating Deposition Nozzle for Z-Pinning Additive Manufacturing

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) involves depositing material layer-by-layer to create athree-dimensional object. This method often demonstrates high mechanical anisotropy in theprinted structure, leading to a drop in the material strength of the part when comparing structuresalong the deposition plane (X/Y-Axis) versus across layers in the build direction (Z-Axis). Initialefforts to improve anisotropy led to the development of the Z-Pinning process, where continuouspins are deposited across layers in the Z-Axis. Z-pinning has demonstrated significant gains intoughness and inter-layer strength, particularly in fiber-reinforced materials. However, thisprocess can also create flaws in the structure that increase in severity and frequency as the pinsgrow in length and diameter. To mitigate this, a penetrating nozzle has been developed thatextends a fine-tipped extrusion nozzle deep into the pin cavity and simultaneously extrudesmaterial as it retracts. This study investigates the printability of the penetrating nozzle for simplegeometries and evaluates the resulting Z-pinning mesostructure. As a result of this study, theprototype penetrating nozzle design was analyzed and built. Through a pressure driven flowanalysis it was determined that the penetrating nozzle extruder can not only flow extrudefilament. After a transient thermal simulation it was found that after a pause of 15 secondsresume printing with no drop in heat at nozzle exit.

Electrical Analysis of Pulsed Laser Annealed Poly-Si:Ga/SiOx Passivating Contacts

High-efficiency single crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells require precise control of dopant diffusion profiles and highly active doping concentrations through thermal annealing. Conventional furnace annealing has been successfully employed for dopant diffusion in aluminum back-surface field (Al-BSF), passivated emitter and rear contact (PERC), and Topcon cells. However, furnace annealing limits some next-generation polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) on SiOx passivating contacts. This limitation largely affects p-type passivating contacts by not being able to: 1) control the dopant diffusion accurately to prevent B segregation at the SiOx and c-Si interface; and 2) provide highly activated doping concentrations for low contact resistivity. In this contribution, we use a nanosecond excimer laser to examine the passivation quality and electrical performance of both B- and Ga-doped poly-Si/SiOx passivating contacts. The core of this method is to take advantage of the nonequilibrium nature of the anneal through rapid melting and recrystallizing the poly-Si in a short timescale and to achieve doping concentrations above the solid solubility limit. Simulations were performed on polished surfaces to visualize the doping diffusion profiles under different laser conditions, and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) was used to verify the experimental diffusion profiles post pulsed laser melting (PLM). The results show the dopant diffusion profiles can be tuned precisely through PLM. The electrical analysis using VdP-Hall measurements reveals that the active doping concentration reached 10^21 cm-3 for B and ~2×10^21 cm-3 for Ga in poly-Si, far exceeding their solid solubility limit in Si, with a nearly 100% dopant activation achieved for B, and 20% for Ga. This highly activated dopant profile results in a low contact resistivity of <15 mO·cm^2 for B-doped contacts and <40 mO·cm^2 for Ga-doped contacts. We demonstrate that the passivation quality of the laser annealed contacts shows a linear dependency with the laser energy density and the number of pulses. PLM was also performed on random pyramid textured samples, and we found that preferential melting exists for the tips of pyramids, which can be pursued further for selective pinhole opening. Additionally, we perform thermal stability tests of these hyperdoped passivating contacts and show that under certain laser conditions, the B-doped samples exhibit good thermal stability with near full activation for temperatures up to 800°C. Lastly, we transfer this technique to a larger area by overlapping laser spots and show uniform passivation quality and electrical performance. We are currently implementing this PLM annealed p-type passivating contacts into double-side back-junction poly-Si/SiOx passivating contact devices. Our results show that PLM can not only enable the next generation of high-efficiency c-Si photovoltaics technology but can also benefit the c-Si integrated circuit industry through hyperdoping other semiconductors with atoms that may otherwise have a low solubility.
