Photoinduced structural recovery dynamics of rare-earth nickelate thin films

Photoinduced structural dynamics of rare-earth nickelate thin films, NdNiO 3 and SmNiO 3 , grown on (001) oriented SrTiO 3 were studied using time-resolved x-ray diffraction. The evolution of the (002) Bragg peak was tracked following laser excitation. The recovery pathways were found to be strongly dependent on laser fluence for NdNiO 3 and distinct for the two rare-earth nickelates. The recovery of the (002) peak shifts was modeled using a one-dimensional thermal diffusion model which showed that the recovery processes are non-thermal at high fluences. For NdNiO 3 , the timescales for the recovery of the (002) peak shift were found to be closely related to Ni magnetism recovery, potentially indicating magneto-structural coupling. Moreover, the evolution of integrated intensity and full-width-half-maximum points towards the presence of a structural phase separation during recovery. In conclusion, our studies highlight structural recovery pathways in nickelates by comparing the distinct responses of the photoinduced metal-insulator transition in NdNiO 3 and SmNiO 3 .

Intrinsic even-odd thickness-driven anomalous Hall effect in epitaxial MnBi2⁢Te4 thin films

We demonstrate precise control of magnetism in MnBi2⁢Te4 thin films through careful synthesis by molecular beam epitaxy, achieving minimal defects and accurate layer thickness control. By optimizing Mn-Bi-Te ratios and growth temperatures, we minimize detrimental self-doping effects and accurately target integer-layer films. X-ray diffraction and reflectivity provide quantitative measures of film quality and thickness. When these macroscale probes of structure and thickness are integrated with magnetotransport measurements, a striking even-odd layer dependence of the anomalous Hall effect is revealed. Odd-layer films exhibit a large hysteresis up to the Néel temperature (∼25K), consistent with noncompensated antiferromagnetism, while even-layer films show minimal response, as expected for an antiferromagnet. The sign of the anomalous Hall effect exhibits a sign reversal for intrinsic magnetism versus magnetism associated with defects. This work identifies critical factors for inducing pure, noncompensated ferromagnetism and reveals the characteristics of the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in MnBi2⁢Te4, which together is a step toward realizing the zero-field quantum anomalous Hall effect in topological materials.

On the Effect of Indium Chloride Dose on the Recrystallization of Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 Thin Films and associated Devices

Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 thin films deposited by a single-stage co-evaporation process at 350 ºC on molybdenum coated soda lime glass substrate were annealed post-deposition in InCl 3 vapor. The amount of InCl 3 and Se was varied. Here, the annealing treatment was done at 450 ºC for 30 minutes. Increase in grain size was observed after the treatment in all cases by X-ray diffraction. Device performance was low, but improved slightly after KCN etching.

Synthesis and electrical behavior of VO 2 thin films grown on SrRuO 3 electrode layers

VO 2 thin films were grown on conducting oxide underlayer SrRuO 3 buffered SrTiO 3 (111) and Si/SiO 2 substrates, respectively, using sputtering. X-ray diffraction phi-scans revealed the epitaxial nature of the VO 2 films grown on SrRuO 3 buffered SrTiO 3 and polycrystalline structure for films grown on SrRuO 3 buffered Si/SiO 2 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms a dominant presence of V 4+ in both films and establishes a high-quality growth of single-phase VO 2 films. Temperature and electric-field driven metal-insulator-transition in both the in-plane and out-of-plane configurations were investigated. Depending on the configuration, the resistance change across the metal-insulator-transition varies from a factor of 1.57–3. The measured resistance in each state as well as the magnitude of resistance change were similar during temperature and electric-field driven metal-insulator-transition. To shed light on the suppressed metal-insulator-transition characteristics due to the current shunting effect from conducting SrRuO 3 bottom electrode, a distributed resistance network model is proposed and benchmarked against reports from the literature. Here, the results demonstrate the growth of high-quality VO 2 on conducting SrRuO 3 layers and their electrical behavior, which is of particular interest for all-oxide electronic devices utilizing phase transitions such as resistive memory and neuromorphic oscillators.

Roles of temperature, materials, and domain inversion in high-performance, low-bias-drift thin film lithium niobate blue light modulators

We demonstrate a thin film lithium niobate electro-optic modulator operating at 456 nm with an RF voltage-length product of 0.38 V-cm and a bandwidth of 6.9 GHz. We test the dielectric relaxation of the modulator with sweeps of temperature and optical input power, and compare equivalent modulators with electrode materials of Cr-Au, Ti-Au and Al in terms of bias stability and current-voltage characteristics. We demonstrate bias stability over at least 8 hours with Al devices, and show relationships between drift, I-V characteristics and ferroelectric domain switching.

Thin film heat transfer gage is stable at higher temperatures

Thin film convective heat transfer gage functions effectively for prolonged periods at temperatures up to 1000 degrees F. An initial resistance shift does not inhibit the performance or accuracy of the gages, as the original resistance-temperature relationship remains unchanged.

Mode conversion in periodically disturbed thin-film waveguides

Mode conversion in a periodically perturbed thin-film optical waveguide is studied in detail. Three different types of perturbations are considered: periodic index of refraction of the film, periodic index of refraction of the substrate, and periodic boundary. The applications in filters, mode converters, and distributed feedback lasers are discussed.
