Boron epoxy rocket motor case program

Three 28-inch-diameter solid rocket motor cases were fabricated using 1/8 inch wide boron/epoxy tape. The cases had unequal end closures (4-1/8-inch-diameter forward flanges and 13-inch-diameter aft flanges) and metal attachment skirts. The flanges and skirts were titanium 6Al-4V alloy. The original design for the first case was patterned after the requirements of the Applications Technology Satellite apogee kick motor. The second and third cases were designed and fabricated to approximate the requirements of a small Applications Technology Satellite apogee kick motor. The program demonstrated the feasibility of designing and fabricating large-scale filament-wound solid propellant rocket motor cases with boron/epoxy tape.

The automation of the stellar proper motion survey

A microdensitometer, scanning pairs of star plates of identical areas of the sky taken a decade apart, is coupled to a magnetic tape unit through a data acquisition system. This system performs an image density threshold level selection for each plate and a buffer memory system to smooth the data flow as well as analog and digital display controls. The data from the tape are processed later by a large scale high speed computer which reconstructs the scanned images, discovers, measures, and documents stellar proper motions by precise comparison of corresponding areas of the two star plates to detect those images which have moved at least 0.10 seconds annually in the time interval between the exposures.

A simple code for use in shielding and radiation dosage analyses

A simple code for use in analyses of gamma radiation effects in laminated materials is described. Simple and good geometry is assumed so that all multiple collision and scattering events are excluded from consideration. The code is capable of handling laminates up to six layers. However, for laminates of more than six layers, the same code may be used to incorporate two additional layers at a time, making use of punch-tape outputs from previous computation on all preceding layers. Spectrum of attenuated radiation are obtained as both printed output and punch tape output as desired.

Improved oxidation-resistant carbon and graphite materials

A variety of silicon-carbide treated carbon and graphite products were prepared, and oxidation and strength properties determined. Carbon and graphite materials used in the preliminary study include fiber, tape, felt, foam, bulk, and laminar configurations. The silicon-carbide treatment used in preparing the oxidation resistant specimens employs either vacuum or ultrasonic impregnation of various silicone-silicon mixtures into the matrix material. The impregnation phase is followed by controlled thermal reaction at which time the silicon carbide is synthesized and takes the form of an integral protective boundary layer. Thickness of the layer ranges from a fraction of a mil to 10 mils, depending on the matrix material and processing parameters. Oxidation resistance of all the silicon-carbide-treated specimens investigated was found to be significantly improved. Mechanical strengths of the laminar composites were also found to be somewhat improved. At room temperature the specific strength of the silicon-carbide treated fibers and tapes was degraded to some extent; however, their relative strengths were significantly increased at elevated temperatures in oxidizing atmosphere.

Linear modulator

A study of frequency division multiplexing (FDM) systems was made for the purpose of determining the system performance that can be obtained with available state of the art components. System performance was evaluated on the basis of past experience, system analysis, and component evaluation. The system study was specifically directed to the area of FDM systems using subcarrier channel frequencies from 4 kHz to 200 kHz and channel information bandwidths of dc to 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 kHz. The evaluation also assumes that the demodulation will be from a tape recorder which produces frequency modulation of + or - 1% on the signal due to the tape recorder wow and flutter. For the modulation system it is assumed that the pilot and carrier channel frequencies are stable to within + or - .005% and that the FM on the channel carriers is negligible. The modulator system was evaluated for the temperature range of -20 degree to +85 degree while the demodulator system was evaluated for operation at room temperature.

Data acquisition and processing history for the Explorer 33 (AIMP-D) satellite

The quality control monitoring system, using accounting and quality control data bases, made it possible to perform an in-depth analysis. Results show that the percentage of useable data files for experimenter analysis was 97.7%; only 0.4% of the data sequences supplied to the experimenter exhibited missing data. The 50 percentile probability delay values (referenced to station record data) indicate that the analog tapes arrived within 11 days, the data were digitized within 4.2 weeks, and the experimenter tapes were delivered in 8.95 weeks or less.

IMP F and G phase 1 magnetic field analysis

The program developed to analyze magnetic field data from the magnetic field experiment flown in IMP F is reported. The analysis converts the raw X, Y, Z sensor data as received on the magnetic field experiment tape into vector measurements of the ambient magnetic field observed by the experiment. These data are computed for four frames of reference -- apparent, payload, solar ecliptic and solar magnetospheric. In addition 20.45 second statistics are computed for the last three coordinate systems. Finally, a summary tape is produced containing detailed data and sequence statistics as well as the output from the autocorrelation computer, trajectory data and identification information.

Design and fabrication of prototype system for early warning of impending bearing failure

Ball bearing performance tests run on several identical ball bearings under a variety of load, speed, temperature, and lubrication conditions are reported. Bearing temperature, torque, vibration, noise, strain, cage speed, etc., were monitored to establish those measurements most suitable as indicators of ball bearing health. Tape records were made under steady-state conditions of a variety of speeds and loads. Sample sections were selected for narrowband spectral analysis with a real time analyzer. An artificial flow was created across the inner race surface of one bearing using an acid etch technique to produce the scratch. Tape records obtained before and after established a characteristic frequency response that identifies the presence of the flow. The signals found most useful as indicators of performance degradation were ultrasonic outputs.

Heat resistant composite structure for shuttle applications (Ryton-B)

A program was undertaken to characterize Ryton-B resin, develop graphite filament prepregs, undirectional laminates and determine the strength and heat resistance of the composite system. Through the use of a water soluble resin binder, high quality prepreg tape, three inches wide with 4 tows of HM-S were produced. The tape laminated to 0.00175 inch per ply. A wide range of properties in the cured resin and laminate were found using different curing conditions. The thermal stability and strength of molded laminates appears to be very dependent upon the cure cycle used for polymerization.

The application of color display techniques for the analysis of Nimbus infrared radiation data

A color enhancement system designed for the Applications Technology Satellite (ATS) spin scan experiment has been adapted for the analysis of Nimbus infrared radiation measurements. For a given scene recorded on magnetic tape by the Nimbus scanning radiometers, a virtually unlimited number of color images can be produced at the ATS Operations Control Center from a color selector paper tape input. Linear image interpolation has produced radiation analyses in which each brightness-color interval has a smooth boundary without any mosaic effects. An annotated latitude-longitude gridding program makes it possible to precisely locate geophysical parameters, which permits accurate interpretation of pertinent meteorological, geological, hydrological, and oceanographic features.

Level 12 NASTRAN experiences at General Dynamics, Convair Aerospace Division, Fort Worth Operations

The level 12 NASTRAN was used to support the NASA/LaRC advanced transport technology study, a predesign, short response time effort. Aeroelastic analyses were performed. NASTRAN calculated the vibration modes for the supported airfoil components and the entire unsupported vehicle. Other procedures were then used for the aeroelastic analysis, with procedure interfacing accomplished through use of the NASTRAN-produced restart tape. Stiffness matrices were used in static aeroelastic analyses; natural vibration modes were used for flutter and flight control system definition. Various level 12 NASTRAN characteristics were discovered and are discussed; e.g., the ability to solve singular matrices in rigid format 1, run times using multipoint constraints, restart tape problems, and the inaccurate stresses from the quad membrane when used with anisotropic materials.

Contamination character of materials in space technology testing.

Determination of the nature and degree of contamination of mirrors in a vacuum environment in the presence of UV irradiation by outgases from some materials that are candidates for use inside spacecraft and simulated spacecraft environments. A vacuum apparatus was developed for testing contamination of mirrors. Offgases from heated test materials are deposited on a refrigerated mirror, half of which is UV irradiated. Reflectance is measured between 1100 and 25,000 A. Thermofit RNF-100, insulated wire TRT-24-19-V-93, and Eccofoam FS and FPH gave heavier deposits on the nonirradiated mirror. Moxness MS60 SO8, Scotch Tape Y-9050, RTV-577, RTV-41, Stycast 1090, and Epon 934 and 828 gave heavier deposits on the irradiated mirror. Raychem wire 44/0411, polyimide tape X1156, Insulgrease G-640, High Vacuum Silicone Grease, and RTV-602 gave only slight deposits on the irradiated and nonirradiated areas of the mirror.
