Circular Bioeconomy Concepts—A Perspective

Circular economy concepts—including a circular bioeconomy—aim to transition the current, essentially linear, economic system to a more sustainable one. However, organizations and researchers currently define the circular economy concept differently, resulting in inconsistencies and difficulty in effectively implementing the framework. In this paper, we provide our perspective on the conceptual definitions of the circular economy, bioeconomy, and circular bioeconomy, outlining potential overlaps and differences and proposing a harmonized interpretation that stresses the importance of the carbon cycle. We conclude that the key goal of a circular economy is to slow, narrow, and close material resource loops, built on the foundation of renewable energy and non-toxic materials. Further, a sustainable bioeconomy goes beyond simply switching fossil resources with renewable, biological resources. It requires low-carbon energy inputs, sustainable supply chains, and promising disruptive conversion technologies for the sustainable transformation of renewable bioresources to high-value bio-based products, materials, and fuels. The bio-based circular carbon economy, in particular, stresses capturing atmospheric carbon via photosynthesis and exploiting this unique feature to the fullest extent possible. It sits at the intersection between the circular economy and the bioeconomy concept, resulting in a framework that focuses on closing the carbon cycle and stressing the opportunity to create an additional carbon sink capability in the technosphere by utilizing biogenic carbon for products and materials that are circulated in same or improved use cycles. Lastly, a sustainable circular bioeconomy transition will necessitate a set of consistent metrics that fit all products and industries.

Systems and methods for providing lockless bimodal queues for selective packet capture

In a network system, an application receiving packets can consume one or more packets in two or more stages, where the second and the later stages can selectively consume some but not all of the packets consumed by the preceding stage. Packets are transferred between two consecutive stages, called producer and consumer, via a fixed-size storage. Both the producer and the consumer can access the storage without locking it and, to facilitate selective consumption of the packets by the consumer, the consumer can transition between awake and sleep modes, where the packets are consumed in the awake mode only. The producer may also switch between awake and sleep modes. Lockless access is made possible by controlling the operation of the storage by the producer and the consumer both according to the mode of the consumer, which is communicated via a shared memory location.

Nonlinear optical diode effect in a magnetic Weyl semimetal

Diode effects are of great interest for both fundamental physics and modern technologies. Electrical diode effects (nonreciprocal transport) have been observed in Weyl systems. Optical diode effects arising from the Weyl fermions have been theoretically considered but not probed experimentally. Here, we report the observation of a nonlinear optical diode effect (NODE) in the magnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi, where the magnetization introduces a pronounced directionality in the nonlinear optical second-harmonic generation (SHG). We demonstrate a six-fold change of the measured SHG intensity between opposite propagation directions over a bandwidth exceeding 250 meV. Supported by density-functional theory, we establish the linearly dispersive bands emerging from Weyl nodes as the origin of this broadband effect. We further demonstrate current-induced magnetization switching and thus electrical control of the NODE. Our results advance ongoing research to identify novel nonlinear optical/transport phenomena in magnetic topological materials and further opens new pathways for the unidirectional manipulation of light.

Motility of acoustically powered micro-swimmers in a liquid crystalline environment

Suspensions of microswimmers in liquid crystals demonstrate remarkably complex dynamics and serve as a model system for studying active nematics. So far, experimental realization of microswimmers suspended in liquid crystalline media has relied on biological microorganisms that impose strict limitations on the compatible media and makes it difficult to regulate activity. Here, we demonstrate that acoustically powered bubble microswimmers can efficiently self-propel in a lyotropic liquid crystal. The velocity of the swimmers is controlled by the amplitude of the acoustic field. Histograms of swimming directions with respect to the local nematic field reveal a bimodal distribution: the swimmers tend to either fully align with or swim perpendicular to the director field of the liquid crystal, occasionally switching between these two states. The bubble-induced streaming from a swimmer locally melts the liquid crystal and produces topological defects at the tail of the swimmer. Further, we show that the defect proliferation rate increases with the angle between the swimmer's velocity and the local orientation of the director field.

Interfacial Spin-Orbit Coupling: A Platform for Superconducting Spintronics

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a key interaction in spintronics, allowing electrical control of spin or magnetization and, vice versa, magnetic control of electrical current. However, recent advances have revealed much broader implications of SOC that is also central to the design of topological states with potential applications from low-energy dissipation and faster magnetization switching to high tolerance of disorder. SOC and the resulting emergent interfacial spin-orbit fields are simply realized in junctions through structural inversion asymmetry, while the anisotropy in magnetoresistance (MR) allows their experimental detection. Surprisingly, we demonstrate that an all-epitaxial ferromagnet/MgO/metal junction with a single ferromagnetic region and only negligible MR anisotropy undergoes a remarkable transformation below the superconducting transition temperature of the metal. The superconducting junction has a MR anisotropy 3 orders of magnitude higher and could enable novel applications in superconducting spintronics. In contrast to common realizations of MR effects that require a finite applied magnetic field, our system is designed to have two stable zero-field states with mutually orthogonal magnetizations: in plane and out of plane. This bistable magnetic anisotropy allows us to rule out orbital and vortex effects due to an applied magnetic field and identify the SOC origin of the observed MR. Such MR reaches approximately 20% without an applied magnetic field and could be further increased for large magnetic fields that support vortices. Our findings call for a revisit of the role of SOC, even when it seems negligible in the normal state, and suggest an alternative platform for superconducting spintronics.

Binary Control Pulse Optimization for Quantum Systems

Quantum control aims to manipulate quantum systems toward specific quantum states or desired operations. Designing highly accurate and effective control steps is vitally important to various quantum applications, including energy minimization and circuit compilation. In this paper we focus on discrete binary quantum control problems and apply different optimization algorithms and techniques to improve computational efficiency and solution quality. Specifically, we develop a generic model and extend it in several ways. We introduce a squared L 2 -penalty function to handle additional side constraints, to model requirements such as allowing at most one control to be active. We introduce a total variation (TV) regularizer to reduce the number of switches in the control. We modify the popular gradient ascent pulse engineering (GRAPE) algorithm, develop a new alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm to solve the continuous relaxation of the penalized model, and then apply rounding techniques to obtain binary control solutions. We propose a modified trust-region method to further improve the solutions. Our algorithms can obtain high-quality control results, as demonstrated by numerical studies on diverse quantum control examples.

Fabrication and characterization of net-shaped iron nitride-amine-epoxy soft magnetic composites

Soft magnetic composites (SMCs) offer a promising alternative to electrical steels and soft ferrites in high performance motors and power electronics. They are ideal for incorporation into passive electronic components such as inductors and transformers, which require a non-permanent magnetic core to rapidly switch magnetization. As a result, there is a need for materials with the right combination of low coercivity, low magnetic remanence, high relative permeability, and high saturation magnetization to achieve these goals. Iron nitride is an attractive soft magnetic material for incorporation into an amine/epoxy resin matrix. This permits the synthesis of net-shaped SMCs using a “bottom-up” approach for overcoming the limitations of current state-of-the-art SMCs made via conventional powder metal processing techniques. In this work we present the fabrication of various net-shaped, iron nitride-based SMCs using two different amine/epoxy resin systems and their magnetic characterization. The maximum volume loading of iron nitride reached was ~77% via hot pressing, which produced SMCs with a saturation magnetic polarization (J s ) of ~0.9 T, roughly 2–3 times the J s of soft ferrites.

Evaluation of radiation hardness of High-Voltage silicon vertical JFETs

In the future ATLAS Inner Tracker, each silicon strip module will be equipped with a switch able to separate the high voltage supply from the sensor in case the latter becomes faulty. The switch, placed in between the HV supply and the sensor, needs to sustain a high voltage in its OFF state, to offer a low resistance path for the sensor leakage current in the ON state, and be radiation hard up to 1.2 * 10 15 neq/cm 2 along with other requirements. While GaN JFETs have been selected as suitable rad-hard switch, a silicon vertical HV-JFET was developed by Brookhaven National Laboratory as an alternative option. Pre-irradiation results showed the functionality of the device and proved that the silicon HV-JFET satisfied the pre-irradiation requirements for the switch. To assess its suitability after irradiation, a few p-type HV-JFETs have been neutron irradiated at Jozef Stefan Institute (JSI, Ljubljana, Slovenia). Overall, this paper reports the static characterization of these irradiated devices and the TCAD numerical simulations used to get an insight of the physics governing the post-irradiation behaviour.

Trends and Heterogeneity in Electric Vehicle Economics: A French Case Study

The total cost of ownership of electric vehicles depends on both the behavior and economic context of the driver as well as the level of government support offered for electrified vehicles. In this work, we study both of these effects as they shift private vehicle costs and emissions benefits, focused on a case study of the faculty and staff commuters to the Cite Scientifique campus of the University of Lille. The modeling approach considers the net costs and emissions from switching each driver from an internal combustion engine vehicle to three electrified options: a hybrid electric, a plug-in hybrid, and a pure battery electric. Increasing government support or technology-induced cost declines of electric vehicles both improve the economics of electrified options and shift more drivers towards battery electrics as the preferred alternative to thermal vehicles.

Transparent conducting oxides: from all-dielectric plasmonics to a new paradigm in integrated photonics

During the past few years, the optics and photonics communities have renewed their attention toward transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), which for over two decades have been broadly employed for the fabrication of transparent electrodes in photovoltaic and communication technologies. This reinvigorated research curiosity is twofold: on the one hand, TCOs, with their metal-like properties, low optical absorption, and fabrication flexibility, represent an appealing alternative to noble metals for designing ultra-compact plasmonic devices. On the other hand, this class of hybrid compounds has been proved to possess exceptionally high optical nonlinearities when operating on a frequency window centered around their crossover point, the wavelength point at which the real part of the dielectric permittivity switches sign. Because TCOs are wide-bandgap materials with the Fermi level located in the conduction band, they are hybrid in nature, thus presenting both interband and intraband nonlinearities. This is the cause of a very rich nonlinear physics that is yet to be fully understood and explored. In addition to this, TCOs are epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials within a broad near-infrared spectral range, including the entire telecom bandwidth. In this operational window a myriad of novel electromagnetic phenomena have been demonstrated experimentally such as supercoupling, wavefront freezing, and photon doping. Furthermore, TCOs stand out among all other ENZ systems due to one fundamental characteristic, which is hardly attainable even by using structured materials. In fact, around their ENZ wavelength and for a quite generous operational range, these materials can be engineered to have an extremely small real index. This peculiarity leads to a slow-light effect that is ultimately responsible for a significant enhancement of the material nonlinear properties and is the cornerstone of the emerging field of near-zero-index photonics. In this regard, the recent history of nonlinear optics in conductive oxides is growing extremely fast due to a great number of experiments reporting unprecedentedly remarkable effects, including unitary index change, bandwidth-large frequency shift, efficient ultra-low-power frequency conversion, and many others. This review is meant to guide the reader through the exciting journey of TCOs, starting as an industrial material for transparent electrodes, then becoming a new alternative for low-loss plasmonics, and recently opening up new frontiers in integrated nonlinear optics. The present review is mainly focused on experimental observations.

ARC-SAFE: Accelerated Response semiconducting Contactors and Surge Attenuation For DC Electrical systems (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

The landscape of power transmission and distribution is quickly evolving as more power conversion is done through power electronics and transmitted or distributed at medium voltage direct current (MVDC). As power electronics tend to store less energy and be less resilient to faults than conventional power transformers, a reliable and fast protection against faults is critical to protect power electronics (PE) based infrastructure, especially for medium- and high-voltage applications. This motivates the development of PE based protection circuits to replace slower contemporary electromechanical breakers. In this project a novel PE based MVDC circuit breaker is developed; the new design is comprised of 1) a normally-on leg made of commercially-available, cascaded SiC junction field effect transistors (JFETs) with a passive balancing network, and 2) a normally-off leg based on an optically-triggered gallium nitride (GaN) photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS). The normally-off leg was designed to be quickly turned on, to divert current to an auxiliary dissipative circuit, as the normally-on leg is turned off. This approach, using solid-state devices, was selected for a high-performance, fast-switching operation for the DC circuit breaker as compared to approaches that use slower mechanical switches. To be practical, the circuit breaker must have low conduction loss (low Ron) in the normally-on leg and fast coordinated triggering of the normally-off leg to avoid damage from inductive flyback, which could be considerable for long lengths of cable.

Gate control of electron correlations towards Mott field effect transistors (MottFET)

The modulation of channel conductance in field-effect transistors (FETs) via metal-insulator-semiconductor structures has revolutionized information processing and storage. However, the limitations of silicon-based FETs in electrical switching have driven the search for new materials capable of overcoming these constraints. Electrostatic gating of competing electronic phases in a Mott material near its metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) offers the prospects of substantial modulation of the conducting electrons and electrical resistivity through small changes in band filling. While electrostatic control of the MIT has been previously reported, the advancement of Mott materials toward novel Mott-based transistors, MottFETs requires the realization of their unique physical properties in a solid-state device. In this study, we present gate control of electron correlation using a solid-state device utilizing the oxide Mott system La 1-x Sr x VO 3 as a correlated FET channel. We report on a gate resistance response that cannot be explained in a purely electrostatic framework. This behavior suggests an enhancement in effective mass and a reduction in effective carrier density as the system approaches its insulating state, consistent with theoretical predictions for Mott systems, suggesting at least 100× charge gain originating from the correlated behavior. These preliminary results pave the way toward the development of highly efficient, low-power electronic devices that could surpass the performance bottlenecks of conventional FETs by leveraging the electronic phase transitions of correlated electron systems.

Towards an “$\mathrm{AdS}_1$/$\mathrm{CFT}_0$” correspondence from the $\mathrm{D}$(-1)/$\mathrm{D}$7 system?

We argue that a type IIB Euclidean supergravity solution of the form $\mathbb{R}$ x S 1 x $\mathbb{T}$ 8 with imaginary self-dual F 1 flux through $\mathbb{R}$ x S 1 belongs to the chain of AdS d x S d x $\mathbb{T}$ 10-2d vacua with (imaginary) self-dual Fd flux, where d ≤ 5. Such vacua come from the near-horizon of D(d - 2)/D(8 - d) branes and are supersymmetric for odd values of d. For d = 1 we speculate that the hallmark of conformal symmetry for the matrix model dual is a vanishing free energy. The matrix dual was recently constructed by [1] by adding matrix interactions coming from strings stretching between the D(-1) and D7 branes to the IKKT matrix model. We find that the corresponding supergravity solution indeed has vanishing on-shell action. Specific F 5 fluxes need to be switched on as a consequence of (a T-dual version of) the Hanany-Witten effect.

Hybrid Heat Pump Controls: Conventional Dual Fuel versus Seamlessly Fuel Flexible Heat Pump

This paper compares the performance of a novel seamlessly fuel flexible heat pump (SFFHP) and conventional dual fuel heat pump (DFHP) for space heating. The conventional dual fuel systems either run on the gas furnace or electric heat pump at any given moment, as a comparison, the proposed seamlessly fuel flexible heat pump simultaneously consumes gas and electricity by continuously optimizing the proportion of each. The process air flows across the heat pump condenser first and then flows across the furnace coil, therefore, the heat pump temperature lift is reduced. SFFHP delivers energy savings by allowing each subsystem, i.e., gas furnace and electric heat pump, to operate where it performs best. For DFHP, two operation control strategies, i.e., non-restricted control and restricted control, are available on market. For the non-restricted mode, the thermostat has a switching temperature-programmed according to the balancing point of heating load and capacity curve. Heat pump operates above the switching temperature, while the furnace takes over under the switching temperature. For the restricted control, the compressor of a heat pump is disabled below a predefined lockout outdoor temperature to let the furnace take over. For SFFHP, a model predictive control strategy is developed to continuously adjust the capacities of the electric heat pump and gas furnace based on the foreseen weather data, utility price signals, and marginal grid emission signals with the goal of minimizing the utility cost and CO2 emission while guaranteeing comfort requirements. In this paper, DFHP and SFFHP are simulated using high-fidelity heat pump performance curves generated from DOE/ORNL heat pump design model. Performance comparison of DFHP and SFFHP during 2019-2020 heating season in Los Angeles shows that SFFHP with model predictive control achieves 23% utility cost reduction and 17 % CO2 emission reduction. Case studies demonstrate that SFFHP can deliver significant reductions in peak demand, utility cost, and CO2 emission. As a result, SFFHP can deliver superior benefits for utility cost reduction and CO2 emission reduction over conventional dual fuel heat pump.

Overset-Grid Method with Smooth Orbital Partitioning for Molecular Scattering Calculations

To solve molecular photoionization and electron scattering problems, we use an overset-grid representation of electronic continuum functions, which has an extended central spherical grid that overlaps small spherical grids (subgrids) centered on each atom of a polyatomic molecule. Here, in this work, we present an improved algorithm that smoothly partitions the total wave function between the central grid and the atomic subgrids. The smooth partitioning allows one to use approximately one-fourth the number of partial waves on the central grid compared to our previous implementation with switching functions. The resulting numerical method for treating electron scattering and photoionization of polyatomic molecules combines the accuracy and flexibility of pure numerical grid representations with the rapid convergence of hybrid combinations of atom-centered basis-set expansions and grid methods. The overset-grid representation is implemented using the complex Kohn variational principle for scattering and photoionization amplitudes. The faster convergence with respect to the number of central grid partial waves is demonstrated and accuracy is verified by comparisons with the previous implementation and with far more computationally demanding single-center numerical expansions in electron-molecule scattering and photoionization calculations on the neon dimer (Ne 2 ) system, carbon tetrafluoride (CF 4 ) molecule, and the pyridine (C 5 H 5 N) molecule in the static-exchange approximation.

CORE-BFS: Communication-Optimized REctangular-partitioned BFS Achieving 160.845 TeraTEPS on Frontier Supercomputer

Distributed Breadth-First Search (BFS) is fundamental to many large-scale graph applications, but its performance on parallel systems is often limited by high communication overhead. This paper presents CORE-BFS, an extremely scalable GPU-based BFS implementation that introduces a unique rectangular 2D partitioning-based design for Frontier supercomputer. To further improve performance, we propose four key optimizations: (1) Rectangular 2D-partition specific data formats that use two compressed row and one compressed column status array bitmaps combined with a Double Compressed Sparse Row (DCSR) format per partition, reducing memory footprint and inter-rank traffic; (2) Adaptive frontier & communication strategy that unifies top-down and bottom-up traversal on the rectangular layout, uses lazy synchronization in top-down levels, and switches variants based on frontier size to minimize communication overhead; (3) Frontier-split degree-aware update that maps frontier vertices to thread-centric, wavefront-centric, and block-centric kernels based on their degree to improve GPU utilization and memory coalescing; (4) Row-reduction pipeline that overlaps bottom-up adjacency list processing with row-wise bitmap reduction to hide inter-rank latency. Together, these techniques increase parallelism while reducing memory and communication overhead. On the Graph500 benchmark, CORE - BFS scales up to 9,248 Frontier nodes with scale-42 graphs and reaches 160.845 TTEPS, delivering a 5.42 × speedup over our previous Frontier implementation.
