History Matching and Prediction of a Polymer Flood Pilot in Heavy Oil Reservoir on Alaska North Slope

The first-ever polymer flood pilot to enhance heavy oil recovery on Alaska North Slope is ongoing. After more than 3 years of polymer injection, significant benefit has been observed from the decrease in water cut from 65% to less than 15% in the project producers. The primary objective of this study is to develop a robust history-matched reservoir simulation model capable of predicting future polymer flood performance. In this work, the reservoir simulation model has been developed based on the geological model and available reservoir and fluid data. In particular, four high transmissibility strips were introduced to connect the injector-producer well pairs, simulating short-circuiting flow behavior that can be explained by viscous fingering and reproducing the water cut history. The strip transmissibilities were manually tuned to improve the history matching results during the waterflooding and polymer flooding periods, respectively. It has been found that higher strip transmissibilities match the sharp water cut increase very well in the waterflooding period. Then the strip transmissibilities need to be reduced with time to match the significant water cut reduction. The viscous fingering effect in the reservoir during waterflooding and the restoration of injection conformance during polymer flooding have been effectively represented. Based on the validated simulation model, numerical simulation tests have been conducted to investigate the oil recovery performance under different development strategies, with consideration for sensitivity to polymer parameter uncertainties. The oil recovery factor with polymer flooding can reach about 39% in 30 years, twice as much as forecasted with continued waterflooding. Besides, the updated reservoir model has been successfully employed to forecast polymer utilization, a valuable parameter to evaluate the pilot test’s economic efficiency. All the investigated development strategies indicate polymer utilization lower than 3.5 lbs/bbl in 30 years, which is less than that of the same polymer used in a polymer pilot in Argentina.

Arc Flash Evaluation Poster

Arc flash evaluation is a key aspect of assessing the safety of an electrical system. An arc flash occurs when a short circuit results in large amounts of unexpected current in a conductor leading to a massive release of energy. By conducting an arc flash evaluation engineers are able to design safer systems and determine the level of protective equipment that a worker needs to wear in order to survive an arc flash incident.

Physiochemical Machine Learning Models Predict Operational Lifetimes of CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Halide perovskites are promising photovoltaic (PV) materials with the potential to lower the cost of electricity and greatly expand the penetration of PV if they can demonstrate long-term stability under illumination in the presence of moisture and oxygen. The solar cell service lifetime as quantified by the T80 (the time required for the power conversion efficiency to drop to 80% of its starting value) is a useful metric to assess stability. The T80 for utility, commercial, or residential PV systems needs to be several decades in order to yield low-cost electricity, and thus it is not practical to directly measure the T80. It would be useful if T80 could be predicted from the initial dynamics of a solar cell’s performance, but until now no models have been developed to forecast T80. In this work, we report the development of machine learning models to predict T80 of ITO/NiOx/CH3NH3PbI3/C60/BCP/Ag solar cells operating at maximum power point under 1-sun equivalent photon flux in air at varying temperatures and relative humidities. Efficiency losses are driven by short-circuit current and fill factor, indicating that chemical decomposition of the perovskite is a major contributor to degradation. Spatial patterns evident from in situ dark field optical microscopy suggest that the electric field gradient at device edges plays a significant role in perovskite decomposition, along with photochemical reactions with O2 and H2O. Models are trained using a menu of features from three distinct categories: (i) features based on measurements of the initial rates of change of device parameters, (ii) features based on the ambient conditions during operation (temperature, & partial pressure of H2O), and (iii) features based on underlying physics and chemistry. We show that a theory-based physiochemical feature derived from a model of the chemical reaction kinetics of the rate of degradation of the CH3NH3PbI3 is particularly valuable for prediction. This physiochemical feature was selected as the first or second most dominant feature in the best performing models. With a dataset consisting of 45 accelerated degradation experiments with T80 that range over a factor of 30, the model predicts T80 with an accuracy of about 40% (|predicted T80 - observed T80| / observed T80) on samples not used in training. This hybrid ML approach should be effective when applied to other compositions, device architectures, and advanced packaging schemes.

Adaptive protection opportunities, gap assessments, and designs

This report provides a comprehensive overview of adaptive protection schemes in use by distribution systems for protection, switching and control on their systems. A significant focus is placed on how existing schemes can be impacted by increasing penetrations of DER as well as how these schemes can enable DER penetrations to increase. EPRI have conducted a survey of member utilities and performed a comprehensive literature review with the goal of baselining the research and identifying gaps with a focus on the issues that were encountered with adaptive protection on real systems. The five adaptive protection applications that are most prevalent on systems today are discussed in detail. These are weather-based fuse-saving, adaptive protection to reduce short-circuit current, adaptive protection for DER, adaptive protection for microgrids, and distribution automation. A broad overview of the technology is given for each scheme. Issues that have been encountered by utilities are highlighted and the safety and reliability impacts are also examined. As distribution systems, intelligent electronic devices, grid equipment and distribution management systems are rapidly evolving, adaptive protection techniques and technologies will become more widely adopted. This report proposes a framework for a conceptual automatic adaptive protection system. EPRI have ongoing research, development and demonstration projects in all of the constituent elements, however challenges remain to link the elements together in a secure and reliable way. EPRI will continue research into automated adaptive protection applications and challenges for the systems of today and future applications to assist system operators in managing the evolving system.

Superconducting Magnet System Concept with a Mechanical Energy Transfer in the Magnetic Field

There is an interest to design superconducting magnet systems working in a persistent current mode. These systems continuously generate magnetic field with disconnected power source working like permanent magnet devices. In this paper proposed a magnet system concept based on the direct mechanical energy transfer in the magnetic field. Short circuited superconducting coils do not have current leads and power source. To pump the mechanical energy in the superconducting coil used a magnetizer which magnetically coupled with the coil. The mechanical removing the magnetizer from the magnet induces a persistent current in the superconducting coil which generates the magnetic field. Iron dominated magnet system concept was investigated using OPERA3d code which confirmed a visibility of proposed approach.

Inter-Area Oscillation Damping with Type-5 Wind Power Plant: Preprint

This paper investigates the potential of using brushless excitation (BLE) for not only riding through the fault but also to damp inter-area power oscillation with the help of a synchronous generator (SG) used in Type 5 Wind Power Plant (WPP). In BLE, an auxiliary synchronous generator (ASG) behaving like an exciter is coupled and driven by the rotor of the main SG. The BLE's field current's ASG is fed by two separate loops of the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and Power System Stabilizer (PSS). The AVR system implements a control loop to regulate the generator terminal voltage, VT. For the PSS, the kinetic energy of the wind turbine is utilized according to the estimated rotational speed of the synchronous generator shaft of the SG. It mitigates the necessity of any curtailment of active power for damping. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified with a three-phase short circuit fault in a two-area power system.

The Effect of Artificial SEIs on Lithium Metal Anode Morphology and Conductivity

Lithium metal has often been termed the “holy grail” of battery technology, due to its high capacity (2,061 mAh/cm3) and low electrochemical potential (-3.04 V vs. SHE). However, lithium’s beneficially low potential also causes it to be highly reactive in the presence of organic solvents, making it difficult to harness the high energy capabilities for rechargeable batteries. Common failure of lithium metal batteries occurs by rapid dendrite growth leading to a hazardous short-circuit. Various methods have been brought forth to better understand the fundamental mechanisms of lithium metal batteries, as well as modifications made to better stabilize lithium metal. A common route of modification is done through interface engineering, with attempts to artificially provide a stable, homogeneous solid-electrolyte interface (SEI). The stability of the SEI has direct effects on the heterogeneity of the electrode surface, which initiates a waterfall effect of for progressive reactions such as dendrite growth, dead lithium accumulation, and electrolyte consumption. This work aims to produce a mixed LiI-LiF artificial SEI to improve ionic conductivity while retaining a high elastic modulus.

FLEXIBLE POWER TRANSFORMERS TO IMPROVE RESILIENCY OF TRANSMISSION NETWORKS

For decades, transformer flexibility of operation has been limited to adjustable voltage ratio and, in some cases, several ratings with staged cooling. Transformers reconnectable to multiple voltage ratings have been primarily applied as emergency replacements. Other versions of “flexible transformers” were developed for continuous, long-term operation at specific sites, with application limited to large utilities. A new technology that supports today’s power systems adaptability requirements has been developed to provide not only voltage and power rating flexibility, but also an adjustable short-circuit impedance. This last, unique feature allows for a closer match to actual system operational requirements and could be used in the future to enhance resiliency and improve dynamic control of electrical grids. While the solution’s fundamentals have already been introduced in several technical forums, the intention of this article is to focus on the potential benefits of this new type of transformer and share the deployment experience of a full-scale prototype that has been in operation in a major U.S. utility since 2021

Short-depth QAOA circuits and quantum annealing on higher-order ising models

Abstract We present a direct comparison between QAOA (Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz), and QA (Quantum Annealing) on 127 qubit problem instances. QAOA with p = 1, 2 rounds is executed on the 127 qubit heavy-hex graph gate-model quantum computer ibm_washington, using on-device grid-searches for angle finding, and QA is executed on two Pegasus-chip D-Wave quantum annealers. The problems are random Ising models whose connectivity matches heavy-hex graphs and the Pegasus graph connectivity, and optionally include hardware-compatible cubic terms ( Z Z Z terms). The QAOA circuits are heavily optimized and of extremely short depth, with a CNOT depth of 6 per round, which allows whole chip usage of the heavy-hex lattice. QAOA and QA are both compared against simulated annealing and the optimal solutions are computed exactly using CPLEX. The noiseless mean QAOA expectation values for p = 1, 2 are computed using classical light-cone based simulations. We find QA outperforms QAOA on the evaluated devices.

Simultaneous estimation of multiple eigenvalues with short-depth quantum circuit on early fault-tolerant quantum computers

We introduce a multi-modal, multi-level quantum complex exponential least squares (MM-QCELS) method to simultaneously estimate multiple eigenvalues of a quantum Hamiltonian on early fault-tolerant quantum computers. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that the algorithm exhibits Heisenberg-limited scaling in terms of circuit depth and total cost. Notably, the proposed quantum circuit utilizes just one ancilla qubit, and with appropriate initial state conditions, it achieves significantly shorter circuit depths compared to circuits based on quantum phase estimation (QPE). Numerical results suggest that compared to QPE, the circuit depth can be reduced by around two orders of magnitude under several settings for estimating ground-state and excited-state energies of certain quantum systems.

A novel equivalent circuit for GDC-based solid oxide cells considering the variations of cell resistances under load

Regarding the mixed ionic-electronic conductive electrolytes, there are several constant assumptions about cell resistances and transference numbers. In this work, the charge transport frameworks of mixed conductive SOCs are comprehensively illustrated. And the independent external current density is introduced into the equivalent circuit for considering the variations of cell resistances under load. The updated expressions of cell resistances together with transference numbers are deduced rigorously based on the equivalent circuit. Electrolyte-supported NiO-GDC/GDC/LSCF cells are tested, and the experimental results validate the variations of cell resistances, especially for the polarization resistance. The comparisons show that electron hole resistances together with transference number calculated by the updated expressions are larger than those obtained by Liu’s method. More accurate transference number and cell resistances under load can be achieved by using the proposed method in this study.

Radio propagation prediction services in Japan

Japanese prediction services for HF radio communications are outlined in relation to prediction method, performance and evaluation. The current prediction is based on the CCIR interim method with some modifications matching to a computer system. The principal service is the monthly median prediction issued regularly three months in advance for various communication circuits. A daily prediction for short distance circuits is being prepared by using real time ionospheric sounding data. An evaluation theory and practice is expected to be introduced in the future prediction service.
