Southern Hemisphere stratosphere and mesosphere temperature and pressure soundings by ship-borne pitot static tube, noting temperature gradients and zonal wind intensities
Radio navigation satellite system for aircraft, ships and land equipment providing position data at low cost in all weather
Inflatable bladder facilitates the removal of heavy, highly finished metal parts from tote boxes or shipping containers. The proposed concept permits removal without danger of damage to the parts or injury to handling personnel.
Navigation services satellite systems including position determination, communication and telemetry for ships and aircraft
Orbiting satellite global all-weather oceanographic data acquisition to complement higher resolution data from ships, buoys and aircraft remote sensors
Short baseline radiating satellite interferometer concept for reducing satellite navigation systematic errors for aircraft and ships
Development of falling sphere for atmospheric density measurements onboard ships
Supporting and protecting frame structure and plug for empty thrust chamber assembly, handling, and shipping
Monomer solutions have high solubility and low solution viscosity. Since monomers are shipped in powder form and reaction to polyimide-acid prepolymer is omitted, the cost is low and handling is easy.
Building blocks with interlocking tabs can be constructed from flat sheets of material using minimum of tools and equipment. Blocks can be used for storing and shipping supplies to remote areas, then filled with soil and stacked to form inhabitable structures which can be dismantled and reused.
Microwave rariometry, spaceborne and aerial photography, and oceanographic data from ships evaluated for remote sensing of coastal oceans
Nuclear surface effect vehicle and subsonic aircraft for transoceanic cargo shipping, discussing mobile reactor safety tests under high speed impact conditions
ATS 1 and 3 satellite VHF transponders for ships and aircraft location, communication and remote sensing, discussing performance test results
Computer program has been developed to calculate and total weights for tubing, fluid in tubing, and weight of fuel cell power source necessary to power pump based on flow rate and pressure drop. Program can be used for fluid systems used in any type of aircraft, spacecraft, trucks, ships, refineries, and chemical processing plants.
A 0.015 scale model of a modified version of the MDAC space shuttle booster was tested in the Naval Ship Research and Development Center 7 x 10 foot transonic wind tunnel, to obtain force, static stability, and control effectiveness data. Data were obtained for a cruise Mach Number of 0.38, altitude of 10,000 ft, and Reynolds Number per foot of approximately 2 x one million. The model was tested through an angle of attack range of -4 deg to 15 deg at zero degree angle of sideslip, and at an angle of sideslip range of -6 deg to 6 deg at fixed angles of attack of 0 deg, 6 deg, and 15 deg. Other test variables were elevon deflections, canard deflections, aileron deflections, rudder deflections, wing dihedral angle, canard incidence angle, wing incidence angle, canard position, wing position, wing and canard control flap size and dorsal fin size.
Dosimetric implications for manned space flight are evaluated by analyzing the radiation field behind the heavy shielding of a manned space vehicle on a near-earth orbital mission and how it compares with actual exposure levels recorded on Apollo missions. Emphasis shifts from flux densities and energy spectra to incident radiation and absorbed doses and dose equivalents as they are recorded within the ship at locations close to crew members.
A flammable plastic part was duplicated dimensionally using a nonflammable material in place of the flammable plastic. The material used was L-3203-6 with a 16-hour post-cure at 400 F. Initial efforts were made to determine shrinkage tolerances required to produce a mold which would produce a finished, workable part. The final twenty-five circuit breaker cases were shipped and the metal inserts when installed, produced a workable breaker. Initial submissions of cases were rejected as lacking sufficient rigidity though they met all other requirements. The plastic cases weighed 16.5 grams, whereas the Refset cases weighed 17 grams, not meeting the less-weight requirement. The data on shrinkage determinations, and mold and part dimensions are shown. The method of manufacture is also reported.
The Lewis Research Center earth resources program efforts are in the areas of: (1) monitoring and rapid evaluation of water quality; (2) determining ice-type and ice coverage distribution to aid operations in a possible extension of the Great Lakes ice navigation and shipping season; (3) monitoring spread of crop viruses; and (4) extent of damage to strip mined areas as well as success of efforts to rehabilitate such areas for agriculture.
