Mesoscale history of a small patch of clear air turbulence.

Sequential analyses of data from a network of eight special rawinsonde stations 100 km apart demonstrate the important effects of mesoscale disturbances in a 2.5-hr episode of light-to-moderate clear air turbulence (CAT). The most significant feature was the development of two turbulent fields below and above a 2-km region of a wind minimum which passed over Wallops Island, Va., near 1530 GMT on Feb. 4, 1970. The small scale of these features precludes their detection in the standard 12-hr observation sequence. The rawinsonde network utilized, which incorporates fine-scale details in both space and time, is adequate to provide a very useful current CAT depiction and an excellent source for the preparation of a short-range forecast of CAT.

Fireball end heights - A diagnostic for the structure of meteoric material

An earlier analysis of Prairie Network fireball trajectory data failed to discriminate between the varieties of meteoric materials that are thought to be present. The Lost City meteorite event offers another calibration of the fireball data and prompts a reanalysis intended to distinguish between ordinary chondritic meteorites and the more fragile early-type carbonaceous chondrites. The carbonaceous material is expected to ablate more readily and have shorter trajectories or higher end heights. Observational error and natural dispersion in the structures produce severe smoothing effects, and the end-height diagnostic is, in itself, not entirely convincing. However, after making a tentative division of the data, one can discern differences in orbits and beginning heights among the three end-height groups. These are consistent with expectations of the behavior of chondritic stones (group I), weak carbonaceous chondrites (group II), and still more fragile cometary material (group III). It is concluded that if the carbonaceous material occurs in reasonable abundance among the fireballs, it has been properly identified by this analysis.

Low cost satellite land mobile service for nationwide applications

A satellite land mobile system using mobile radios in the UHF band, and Ku-band Communications Routing Terminals (earth stations) for a nationwide connection from any mobile location to any fixed or mobile location, and from any fixed location to any mobile location is proposed. The proposed nationwide satellite land mobile service provides: telephone network quality (1 out of 100 blockage) service, complete privacy for all the users, operation similar to the telephone network, alternatives for data services up to 32 Kbps data rates, and a cost effective and practical mobile radio compatible with system sizes ranging from 10,000 to 1,000,000 users. Seven satellite alternatives (ranging from 30 ft diameter dual beam antenna to 210 ft diameter 77 beam antenna) along with mobile radios having a sensitivity figure of merit (G/T) of -15 dB/deg K are considered. Optimized mobile radio user costs are presented as a function of the number of users with the satellite and mobile radio alternatives as system parameters.

Development of automated power system management techniques

The basic approach in the automated power system management (APSM) implementation is to use one central microprocessor for the overall power system supervision and several local microprocessors dedicated to one or more major subassemblies to perform simple monitoring and control functions. Communication between the central and each local processor is through a dedicated two-wire network employing serial data transfer. The block diagrams of the processors, the data bus characteristics, and the software functions and organization are presented.

Improved Parallel-Access Alinement Network

Network channels elements of data array from memory ports to processor ports using a hardware-generated binary control work. Depending on control work selected, data may be shifted in increments or transposed in each of three levels to reach appropriate processing ports. A similar arrangement with reversed wiring is used to return data from processing ports to respective memory modules. Selection gate used in network incorporates two AND gates feeding an OR gate. In some logic families the OR gate may be fabricated as a "wired OR".

The NASA communications R & D program

About two years ago, NASA decided to reactivate its communications R&D Program, which had been phased down in 1973. The new program focuses on three major areas: (1) technology development in the 30 and 20 GHz bands for wideband communications; (2) system definition for an integrated terrestrial and satellite-aided system for land mobile communications in the 860 MHz band; and (3) development of system concepts and pilot networks for applications data services. The paper summarizes the new activities in the three areas and describes their status and plans.

Control Data ICEM: A vendors IPAD-like system

The IPAD program's goal which was to integrate aerospace applications used in support of the engineering design process is discussed. It is still the key goal, and has evolved into a design centered around the use of data base management, networking, and global user executive technology. An integrated CAD/CAM system modeled in part after the IPAD program and containing elements of the program's goals was developed. The integrated computer aided engineering and manufacturing (ICEM) program started with the acquisition of AD-2000 and Synthavision. The AD-2000 has evolved to a production geometry creation and drafting system which is called CD/2000. Synthavision has grown to be a full scale 3-dimensional modeling system, the ICEM Modeler.

MAP/GLOBUS campaign 1983

The major scientific objectives of the campaign are the accurate measurement of ozone and its short-term variability together with the determination of members of the NO sub x family as NO, NO2, NO3, N2O5, and HNO3. Related important solar fluxes (including scattered fluxes) shall be measured as much as possible. Other important trace species (as H2O) shall be determined simultaneously. The detailed scientific objectives for the ozone and NO sub x measurements are given. A further scientific objective is the study of atmospheric dynamics, especially of the meteorological background. Therefore special analysis will be performed of the data of respective network stations and satellites. Local wind and turbulence measurements will also be performed.

A variable bandwidth assignment scheme for the Land Mobile Satellite experiment

The Mobile Satellite Experiment is a proposed experimental satellite-based communications network which provides data and voice communications to mobile terminals dispersed in geographically dispersed areas. In this paper, an analytical model is developed to calculate the performance of a Variable Bandwidth Assignment (VBA) Scheme. Under this scheme, the satellite channel bandwidth is dynamically reassigned so that a message may be transmitted in the shortest possible time. To transmit a long message, message channels will be reconfigured to have more bandwidth such that the transmission time is reduced, while to transmit a short message, the channel bandwidth will be shrunk such that the released bandwidth can be used to serve other messages. The model is illustrated with numerical examples. It is shown that a VBA scheme can achieve considerable improvement in transmission delays over a Fixed Bandwidth Assignment Scheme.

Atmospheric correction of TIMS data

The Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS) is a unique sensor for two reasons, it is multispectral in the thermal-infrared and it has on board, active calibration sources. The existence of the calibration permits the recorded DNs to be converted unambiguously to absolute energy units. However, to relate the data to energy originating from a target on the ground it is necessary to remove the atmospheric contribution to the signal, specifically its transmittance and emittance. These can be obtained fairly easily by use of the atmospheric model provided by LOWTRAN-6 and the data from the U.S. Weather Service network of bidaily radiosondes. Using these data with the TIMS responsivity curves an equation can be obtained which permits the unambiguous correction of the TIMS data for the atmosphere.

Ada technology support for NASA-GSFC

Utilization of the Ada programming language and environments to perform directorate functions was reviewed. The Mission and Data Operations Directorate Network (MNET) conversion effort was chosen as the first task for evaluation and assistance. The MNET project required the rewriting of the existing Network Control Program (NCP) in the Ada programming language. The DEC Ada compiler running on the VAX under WMS was used for the initial development efforts. Stress tests on the newly delivered version of the DEC Ada compiler were performed. The new Alsys Ada compiler was purchased for the IBM PC AT. A prevalidated version of the compiler was obtained. The compiler was then validated.
