Imitation of spin density wave order in Cu 3 Nb 2 O 8

Spin density waves, based on modulated local moments, are usually associated with metallic materials, but have recently been reported in insulators which display coupled magnetic and structural order parameters. Here, we discuss one such example, the multiferroic Cu 3 Nb 2 O 8 , which is reported to undergo two magnetic phase transitions, first to an unknown antiferromagnetic phase at $T_N$ ≈ 26.5 K , and then to a helicoidal structure coupled to an electric polarization below $T_2$ ≈ 24 K which breaks the crystallographic inversion symmetry. By analogy with other complex oxides, one might naturally expect this intermediate phase to be a spin density wave phase. We apply spherical polarimetry to confirm the low-temperature magnetic structure, yet only observe a single magnetic phase transition to helicoidal order. We argue that the reported unknown phase actually supports an imitation spin density wave which originates from a decoupling of the components of the magnetic order parameter, as allowed by symmetry and driven by thermal fluctuations. This provides a mechanism for the magnetic, but not nuclear, structure to break inversion symmetry thereby creating an intermediate phase in the proximity of $T_N$ which imitates a spin density wave. As the temperature is reduced, this intermediate structure destabilizes the crystal such that a structural chirality is induced, as reflected by the emergence of the electric polarization, and the imitation spin density wave relaxes into a generic helicoid. This scenario in which critical fluctuations allow the magnetic structure to break inversion symmetry while the crystal structure remains centrosymmetric might be relevant to other complex multiferroics.

GdN/SmN superlattices; influence of a Zeeman/exchange conflict

GdN and SmN are two of the lanthanide nitrides, most of which are intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductors. Superlattices comprising the pair offer a unique opportunity to investigate heterojunctions that feature simultaneous conductivity and magnetic interface influences. In this work, we report an investigation of these influences, using magnetisation and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism for magnetic effects, and magnetoresistance and Hall effect studies of their electrical conductance. Magnetic data show clear signatures of a conflicting Zeeman vs. interfacial exchange and the magnetic disruption that results, while resistivity and Hall measurements show conduction in both GdN and SmN.

Formation of Complex Spin Textures in Thermally Demagnetized La 0.7 Sr 0.3 Mn O 3 Artificial-Spin-Ice Structures

Artificial spin ices (ASIs) have traditionally been designed such that each nanomagnet possesses a single-domain magnetic configuration that is assumed to be minimally perturbed by interisland dipolar interactions. Using x-ray photoemission electron microscopy to perform magnetic domain imaging, we study thermally demagnetized La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 -based brickwork ASI arrays and showed that complex spin textures (CSTs) can be stabilized through an appropriate selection of nanoisland width and interisland spacing. While the width dependence can be explained through the dominance of shape anisotropy in isolated nanoislands, the ASIs we investigate demonstrate a complex dependence on both the nanoisland width and interisland spacing. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that interisland dipolar interactions play a role in the formation of CSTs, which are composed of single- and double-vortex states. Furthermore, energy analysis of the simulations provides an understanding of the system energetics that arises from a delicate balance between intraisland effects (i.e., shape anisotropy and exchange energy) and interisland effects (i.e., dipolar interactions between nearest-neighbor nanoislands).

Implications of second harmonic generation for hidden order in Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2

Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 (SCOC) is a model undoped cuprate with I4/mmm crystallographic symmetry, and a simple magnetic space group CAmca with associated magnetic point group mmm1'. However, recent second harmonic spectroscopy in the antiferromagnetic phase has challenged this picture, suggesting instead a magnetic point group 4/mm'm' that coexists with the antiferromagnetism and breaks the two orthogonal mirror planes containing the tetragonal c axis. Here, we analyze the symmetry of SCOC in light of the second harmonic results, and discuss possible ground states that are consistent with the data.

First-principles and cluster expansion study of the effect of magnetism on short-range order in Fe–Ni–Cr austenitic stainless steels

Short-range order (SRO), the regular and predictable arrangement of atoms over short distances, alters the mechanical properties of technologically relevant structural materials such as medium/high entropy alloys and austenitic stainless steels. In this study, we present a generalized spin cluster expansion (CE) model and show that magnetism is a primary factor influencing the level of SRO present in austenitic Fe-Ni-Cr alloys. The spin CE consists of a chemical cluster expansion combined with an Ising model for Fe-Ni-Cr austenitic alloys. It explicitly accounts for local magnetic exchange interactions, thereby capturing the effects of finite temperature magnetism on SRO. Model parameters are obtained by fitting to a first-principles data set comprising both chemically and magnetically diverse FCC configurations. The magnitude of the magnetic exchange interactions are found to be comparable to the chemical interactions. Compared to a conventional implicit magnetism CE built from only magnetic ground state configurations, the spin CE shows improved performance on several experimental benchmarks over a broad spectrum of compositions, particularly at higher temperatures due to the explicit treatment of magnetic disorder. We find that SRO is strongly influenced by alloy Cr content, since Cr atoms prefer to align antiferromagnetically with nearest neighbors but become magnetically frustrated with increasing Cr concentration. Using the spin CE, we predict that increasing the Cr concentration in typical austenitic stainless steels promotes the formation of SRO and increases order-disorder transition temperatures. Furthermore, this study underscores the significance of considering magnetic interactions explicitly when exploring the thermodynamic properties of complex transition metal alloys. It also highlights guidelines for customizing SRO through adjustments of alloy composition.

Thermodynamics and Magnetism of YCo5 Compound Doped with Fe and Ni: An Ab Initio Study

YCo5 permanent magnet exhibits high uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy and has a high Curie temperature. These are good properties for a permanent magnet, but YCo5 has a low energy product, which is notably insufficient for a permanent magnet. In order to improve the energy product in YCo5, we suggest replacing cobalt with iron, which has a much bigger magnetic moment. With a combination of density-functional-theory calculations and thermodynamic CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) modeling, we show that a new magnet, YFe3(Ni1-xCox)2, is thermodynamically stable and exhibits an improved energy product without significant detrimental effects on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy or the Curie temperature.

Vortex Ordering and Dynamics of Santa Fe Artificial Ice Pinning Arrays

We numerically examine the ordering, pinning, and flow of superconducting vortices interacting with a Santa Fe artificial ice pinning array. We find that as a function of magnetic field and pinning density, a wide variety of vortex states occur, including ice rule obeying states and labyrinthine patterns. In contrast to square pinning arrays, we find no sharp peaks in the critical current due to the inherent frustration effect imposed by the Santa Fe ice geometry; however, there are some smoothed peaks when the number of vortices matches the number of pinning sites. For some fillings, the Santa Fe array exhibits stronger pinning than the square array due to the suppression of one-dimensional flow channels when the vortex motion in the Santa Fe lattice occurs through the formation of both longitudinal and transverse flow channels.

Influence of hydrostatic pressure on hidden order, the Kondo lattice, and magnetism in URu 2 Si 2-x P x

Within the chemical substitution series URu 2 Si 2-x P x , there is an evolution in the ground-state behavior from hidden ordered (HO) for x ≲ 0.03, to Kondo lattice behavior with no ordering (NO) for 0.03 ≲ x ≲ 0.26, to antiferromagnetism (AFM-2) for 0.26 ≲ x ≲ 0.5 [A. Gallagher et al., Nat. Commun. 7, 10712 (2016); A. Gallagher et al., J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 29, 024004 (2016)]. To better understand what factors control this behavior, temperature-dependent electrical resistivity measurements are performed for this series under applied pressures P up to 20.5 kbar. Specimens in the HO x region show similarities to the parent compound, where HO transforms into antiferromagnetism (AFM-1) at a critical pressure (P c ). P c decreases with increasing x and collapses towards P = 0 near x ≈ 0.03, suggesting that AFM-1 occurs at ambient pressure for this concentration. No pressure-induced phase transitions are observed in the NO x region and the AFM-2 state is only weakly suppressed by P. Measurements further reveal that AFM-1 and AFM-2 are distinct from each other. Calculations of the wave functions using the tight-binding Hartree-Fock approximation are performed and show (i) that the radial probability distributions for the phosphorus ions are more tightly bound than those for the silicon and (ii) that the energy difference between the orbitals decreases with increasing x. The cumulative effect of these two factors is that Si → P substitution decreases the hybridization strength, which correlates with the weakening of HO. At large x, additional effects such as electrical charge tuning also play an important role in determining the ground-state

Order fractionalization in a Kitaev-Kondo model

We describe a mechanism for order fractionalization in a two-dimensional Kondo lattice model, in which electrons interact with a gapless spin liquid of Majorana fermions described by the Yao-Lee (YL) model. When the Kondo coupling to the conduction electrons exceeds a critical value, the model develops a superconducting instability into a state with a a spinor order parameter with charge 4 and spin ( = 1 2. The broken symmetry state develops a gapless Majorana Dirac cone in the bulk. By including an appropriate gauge string, we can show that the charge 4, spinorial order develops off-diagonal long range order that allows electrons to coherently tunnel arbitrarily long distances through the spin liquid.

Extracting off-diagonal order from diagonal basis measurements

Quantum gas microscopy has developed into a powerful tool to explore strongly correlated quantum systems. However, discerning phases with topological or off-diagonal long range order requires the ability to extract these correlations from site-resolved measurements. Here, we show that a multiscale complexity measure can pinpoint the transition to and from the bond ordered wave phase of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with an off-diagonal order parameter, sandwiched between diagonal charge and spin density wave phases, using only diagonal descriptors. We study the model directly in the thermodynamic limit using the recently developed variational uniform matrix product states algorithm, and draw our samples from degenerate ground states related by global spin rotations, emulating the projective measurements that are accessible in experiments. Our results will have important implications for the study of exotic phases using optical lattice experiments. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Magnetic glassiness in noncentrosymmetric Sm 7 Pd 3 : Interplay of magnetic frustration, long-range order, and frozen domains

Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of the intricate spin dynamics in the noncentrosymmetric compound Sm 7 ⁢Pd 3 , revealing the coexistence of spin-glass, domain-glass, and ferromagnetic (FM) behaviors. Magnetic field-dependent measurements indicate large coercivity, suggesting ferromagnetic domain formation below the Curie temperature (𝑇 C ≈ 173 K), while temperature-dependent magnetization data point to antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling, highlighting the competition between FM and AFM interactions. Detailed ac susceptibility, isothermal remanent magnetization, and aging effect measurements demonstrate the presence of two distinct types of glassiness in the sample, and their possible origins are discussed extensively. Magnetization measurements reveal the mixing of the 𝐽 = 5/2 ground state of Sm 3+ with the excited 𝐽 = 7/2 multiplet, lying 965 K above. The specific heat data show further crystalline electric field splitting of the 𝐽 = 5/2 state into a ground-state doublet and a fourfold-degenerate excited state.

Observing the Suppression of Superconductivity in RbEuFe 4 As 4 by Correlated Magnetic Fluctuations

In this Letter, we describe quantitative magnetic imaging of superconducting vortices in RbEuFe 4 As 4 in order to investigate the unique interplay between the magnetic and superconducting sublattices. Our scanning Hall microscopy data reveal a pronounced suppression of the superfluid density near the magnetic ordering temperature in good qualitative agreement with a recently developed model describing the suppression of superconductivity by correlated magnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, these results indicate a pronounced exchange interaction between the superconducting and magnetic subsystems in RbEuFe 4 As 4 , with important implications for future investigations of physical phenomena arising from the interplay between them.

Magnetism and magnetotransport in the kagome antiferromagnet Mn 3 Ge

We perform classical Monte Carlo and stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert simulations to study the temperature-dependent magnetism of the kagome antiferromagnet Weyl metal Mn3Ge, and we find that a long-range chiral order sets in at a transition temperature well below the Neel temperature (T N ). Based on the crystalline symmetries imposed by the chiral magnetic order, we argue for the presence of multiple isoenergetic Weyl nodes (nodes that are at the same energy and with a congruent Fermi surface around them) near the chemical potential. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann equations, we show that the combined contribution to the net longitudinal magnetoconductance (LMC) and the planar Hall conductance (PHC) from tilted Weyl nodes can lead to signatures that are qualitatively distinct from that of a single pair of Weyl nodes. In particular, we show that magnetic orders with different chiralities can give rise to different periods in LMC and PHC as a function of the in-plane magnetic field direction. As a result, this is ultimately related to differences in the symmetry-imposed constraints on the Weyl nodes.

Above-Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism in Thin van der Waals Flakes of Cobalt-Substituted Fe 5 GeTe 2

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic van der Waals materials provide a powerful platform for studying the fundamental physics of low-dimensional magnetism, engineering novel magnetic phases, and enabling thin and highly tunable spintronic devices. To realize high-quality and practical devices for such applications, there is a critical need for robust 2D magnets with ordering temperatures above room temperature that can be created via exfoliation. Here, in this paper, the study of exfoliated flakes of cobalt-substituted Fe 5 GeTe 2 (CFGT) exhibiting magnetism above room temperature is reported. Via quantum magnetic imaging with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, ferromagnetism at room temperature was observed in CFGT flakes as thin as 16 nm corresponding to 16 layers. This result expands the portfolio of thin room-temperature 2D magnet flakes exfoliated from robust single crystals that reach a thickness regime relevant to practical spintronic applications. The Curie temperature T c of CFGT ranges from 310 K in the thinnest flake studied to 328 K in the bulk. To investigate the prospect of high-temperature monolayer ferromagnetism, Monte Carlo calculations were performed, which predicted a high value of T c of ~270 K in CFGT monolayers. Pathways toward further enhancing monolayer T c are discussed. These results support CFGT as a promising platform for realizing high-quality room-temperature 2D magnet devices.

Warm to cold correlations and other test results of the MQXFA Low-Beta Quadrupole magnets for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider

The production of the MQXFA low-beta quadrupole magnets for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is quite advanced with about 20 magnets cold tested in vertical cryostat. The MQXFA magnets are fabricated by the US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) and are being used in the Q1 and Q3 Inner Triplet (IT) elements of the HL-LHC, whereas CERN is fabricating similar magnets for Q2a and Q2b IT elements. These large-aperture, high-gradient quadrupole magnets are first-of-the-kind accelerator magnets introducing Nb_3Sn conductor to High Energy Physics colliders. At this point of MQXFA production there is sufficient data to look at warm to cold correlations for the HL-LHC and for future use of Nb_3Sn magnets in particle accelerators. Examples of warm-cold correlations discussed in this paper are: field quality (including the use of magnetic shims for low-order harmonics correction), magnetic length, magnetic axis and magnetic field angle. A summary of main test data will also be presented and discussed.

Topological edge conduction induced by strong anisotropic exchange interactions

Here, we predict that an interplay between isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions in a honeycomb lattice structure can lead to topological edge conduction when the anisotropic interaction is at least twice the strength of the isotropic interaction. For materials like Na 2 ⁢IrO 3 , such a strong anisotropic exchange interaction simultaneously induces a zigzag type of antiferromagnetic order that breaks the time-reversal symmetry of the topological edge conductor. We show that the electronic transport in such topological conductors will exhibit a quantized Hall conductance without any external magnetic field when the Fermi energy lies within a particular energy range.

Fermi surface reconstruction due to orthorhombic distortion in the Dirac semimetal YbMnSb 2

A Dirac semimetal with magnetic atoms as constituents delivers an interesting platform to investigate the interplay of Fermi surface (FS) topology, electron correlation, and magnetism. One such family of semimetals is YbMn⁢ 𝑃⁢𝑛 2 (𝑃⁢𝑛 = Sb,Bi), which is being actively studied due to the intertwined spin and charge degrees of freedom. Here, in this study, we investigate the relationship between the magnetic/crystal structures and FS topology of YbMnSb 2 using single crystal x-ray diffraction, neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, magnetotransport measurements, and complimentary density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Contrary to previous reports, the x-ray and neutron diffraction reveal that YbMnSb 2 crystallizes in an orthorhombic 𝑃⁢𝑛⁢𝑚⁢𝑎 structure with a notable antiphase displacement of the magnetic Mn ions that increases in magnitude upon cooling. As a result of this orthorhombicity, first-principles DFT calculation reveals a reduced Brillouin zone and more anisotropic FS of YbMnSb 2 compared to YbMnBi 2 . Moreover, the hole-type carrier density drops by two orders of magnitude as YbMnSb 2 orders antiferromagnetically, indicating band folding in a magnetic ordered state. In addition, the Landau level fan diagram yields a nontrivial nature of the Shubnikov–de Haas quantum oscillation frequency arising from the Dirac-like Fermi pocket. These results imply that YbMnSb 2 is an ideal platform to explore the interplay of subtle lattice distortion, magnetic order, and topological transport arising from relativistic quasiparticles.
