An electrodynamic model for an ionosphere-solar wind interaction is developed based on the existence of a low beta plasma below the anemopause. The currents for the interaction are driven by the solar wind motional electric field and induce a stagnation magnetic field at the anemopause. For Venus and Mars the lower region of the ionosphere near the electron density peak has the highest conductivity, and therefore the tangential component of the induction current flows substantially in this region. The current paths close in the anemopause, which is a solar wind current sheath analogous to the magnetopause. Both the fraction of the undisturbed solar wind motional electric field, which drives the induction current, and the required fraction of incident solar wind particles, crossing the anemopause to produce this current, are shown to be small.
The gas-surface interaction effects observed by the quadrupole mass spectrometer are described, and the technique developed to account for them in determining ambient neutral densities is summarized. The total ion current and the ion currents for ions with molecular weights 2, 4, 16, 28, and 32 are sampled for 1.125 sec once every 9.216 sec, for 258 sec out of a 368 sec cycle. An equation is given for the number density of any constituent in the ion source region, and source density data are discussed. The mass 28 background gas is considered to be CO rather than N2, and a CO model is developed. A quasi-equilibrium model of the atomic oxygen interactions is constructed, and a set of surface parameters is determined which provides a reasonable fit to the mass 16 and 32 source densities consistent with the predicted ambient atomic oxygen.
The use of interactive graphics is presented as an attractive method for performing multi-parameter data analysis of proton recoil distributions to determine neutron spectra. Interactive graphics allows the user to view results on-line as the program is running and to maintain maximum control over the path along which the calculation will proceed. Other advantages include less time to obtain results and freedom from handling paper tapes and IBM cards.
A digital autopilot which can provide attitude control for the entire Skylab orbital assembly using the service module reaction control jets is described. An important consideration is the potential interaction of the control system with the bending modes of the orbital assembly. Two aspects of this potential interaction were considered. The first was the possibility that bending induced rotations feeding back through the attitude sensor into the control system could produce an instability or self-sustained oscillation. The second was whether the jet activity commanded by the control system could produce excessive loads at any of the critical load points of the orbital assembly. Both aspects were studied by using analytic techniques and by running simulations on the all-digital simulator.
A previous calculation of the thermodynamic properties of interstitial solid solutions based on the technique of Kirkwood expansions has been extended to include the effects of second nearest neighbor solute atom mutual interactions. The error inherent in the first order (or quasi-chemical) counting of the degeneracy of the solution crystal is avoided. It is shown that, at high temperatures, even strong second nearest neighbor solute mutual interactions have a negligible effect on the entropy of the solution and a small, temperature-dependent effect on the solute partial enthalpy.
The interaction is characterized by the production of plasma, within which the primary absorption occurs. Absorption of laser radiation by a plasma may occur by several processes. The absorption process called 'inverse bremsstrahlung' is discussed. The interaction of a laser beam with the plasma produced from a thick metal target was studied. The results of the measurements of the ion kinetic energies are presented in a graph. In addition to measurements with thick targets, information was also obtained with a thin foil of gold.
The expected characteristics of the solar wind, extrapolated from the vicinity of the earth are described. Several models are examined for the interaction of the solar wind with the interstellar plasma and magnetic field. Various aspects of the penetration of neutral interstellar gas into the solar wind are considered. The dynamic effects of the neutral gas on the solar wind are described. Problems associated with the interaction of cosmic rays with the solar wind are discussed.
The problem of inverse scattering at fixed angular momentum is considered. The problem is particularized to the case of nonlocal separable interactions. A brief survey of the inverse problem for nonlocal separable interactions is presented. This problem can be solved exactly by integration. It amounts to solving singular integral equations of the Hilbert-Mushkhelishvili type, which have been studied extensively in the past and appear in many areas of physics, including theory of elasticity and dispersions relations in high energy physics.
