Pyrotechnic hazards classification and evaluation program. Electrostatic vulnerability of the E8 and XM15/XM165 clusters, phase 1

A survey of the electrostatic vulnerability of explosive manufacturing plants and recommendations for reducing the vulnerability are discussed. During the course of the investigations, the XM15/XM165 and the E8 launcher were shown to be susceptible to electrostatic ignition. The pyrotechnic hazard of prime concern associated with electrostatics is that of the spark which can be generated. The heat, shock, and ionization produced by the spark can cause ignition of pyrotechnics. However, as a result of the initial ignition tests (XM15 fuse train), changes have been incorporated to make the fusing system relatively safe from premature electrostatic activation.

Pressurized expulsion of nonisothermal single-phase cryogen

The performance of single-phase storage and expulsion systems as affected by temperature variations within the stored cryogen which are generated during heat transfer is discussed. Peculiar operating responses are indicated by spontaneous changes in fluid pressure which accompany g level changes, increased heater surface temperature, and durations of pressure cycles which differ considerably from that which is computed for an isothermal cryogen. The nonisothermal characteristics are predicted with a numerical model which includes the simultaneous solution of the time dependent conservation equations of mass, energy, and momentum in two space dimensions of Cartesian coordinates for boundary conditions which approximate those of the flight cryogenic system. The methodology of the numerical method and some comparisons between the predictions and the Apollo 12 flight data are included.

Long-life, space-maintainable nuclear stage regulators and shutoff valves

The six most promising valve, regulator, and remote coupling concepts, representing the more radical designs from twenty concepts generated, were investigated. Of the three valves, one has no moving parts because shutoff sealing is accomplished by an electromagnetic field which ionized the flowing fluid. Another valve uses liquid metal to obtain sealing. In the third valve, high sealing forces are generated by heating and expanding trapped hydrogen. The pressure regulator is an electronically controlled, electromechanically operated, single state valve. Its complexity is in electronic circuitry, and the design results in less weight, increased reliability and performance flexibility, and multipurpose application. The two remote couplings feature the minimization of weight and mechanical complexity. One concept uses a low melting temperature metal alloy which is injected into the joint cavity; upon solidification, the alloy provides a seal and a structural joint. The second concept is based on the differential thermal expansion of the coupling mating parts. At thermal equilibrium there is a predetermined interference between the parts, and sealing is achieved by interference loading.

Sintering and hot pressing of Fra Mauro composition glass and the lithification of lunar breccias.

It is proposed that Apollo 14 type breccias lithify by sintering of particles of matrix glass under stress-free conditions. Meteorite impacts generate the heat necessary for sintering. Compacted angular particles of glass with the composition of an Apollo 14 rock were sintered experimentally. Loose clods of sub 37 micron grains form in several days at 700 C. Synthetic rocks, which texturally resemble the breccias, were produced at 795 C and above in 7.5 hours. Glass devitrified with increasing temperature. At 850 C, devitrification prevents much further densification of the synthetic breccias after 2 hours. Experiments compressing glass at 500 bars at 600 C produced dense vitreous masses which did not resemble lunar breccias. Confining pressure does not play a major role in lithifying the breccias. It is concluded that Apollo 14 type lunar breccias form at shallow depths at 800 C+ in a period of minutes to days.

Ultrasonic measurement of stress in railroad wheels and in long lengths of welded rail

The failure of high speed emergency braking is discussed for railroad wheels and track. It is shown that high compressive residual stresses exist in the rims of new wheels which generate excessive heat, reducing the stress levels. Thermal stresses that build up in continuous lengths of welded track are reported and nondestructive methods of measuring stresses in thick steel are presented for identification, replacement, or adjustment before hazardous failures occur.

An injector design model for predicting rocket engine performance and heat transfer

A model is formulated for estimating the performance and chamber heat transfer in rocket injectors/chambers operating with gaseous H2-O2 propellants. The model quantifies the combustion performance and chamber heat flux for variables such as chamber length, element type, element area ratio, impingement angle, thrust/element, mixture ratio, moment ratio, element spacing, and physical size. Design equations are given and curves are plotted for evaluation of combustion performance in injectors comprised of F-O-F triplet, premix, coaxial and swirl coaxial element types. Curve plots and equations are also included for estimation of the chamber wall heat fluxes generated by these element types.

Transient flow and heating in a pinched plasma column

The axial flow and heating of an argon plasma in a pinched plasma column of a pulsed, linear z-pinch device was experimentally examined with a unique pressure sensing instrument capable of resolving mass flow properties. Transient axial pressure profiles identify periods of intense flow and heating. Mechanisms generating such effects are considered.

The nature of the sunspot phenomenon. II - Internal overstable modes

It had been pointed out by Parker (1974) that the basic cause of the sunspot phenomenon is the enhanced heat transport in the magnetic field of the sunspot. The enhanced transport occurs through convective overstability which operates as a heat engine generating Alfven waves. The characteristics of the convective forces present are investigated along with questions concerning overstability and convectively driven Alfven waves. Relations regarding instability and convectively driven surface waves are discussed and attention is given to individual overstable Alfven modes. It is found that the form of an Alfven wave in the absence of convective forces is entirely arbitrary, so that waves with any arbitrary profile can be fitted into a vertical column of the field without disturbing the fluid outside. With the introduction of convective forces the situation changes so that the presence of lateral boundaries alters the form of the basic wave modes.

Comparison of solar system measured data for various sample rates

The results of solar house data for sample rates of 50, 100, 250, 300, and 600 seconds were compared. The data considered for summer days were the heat incident on the collectors, the heat used by the air conditioner generator, and the heat used by the auxiliary heater. For winter days, the heat incident, the heat collected and the heat used by the heat exchanger were computed. These data were compared for different weather days such as clear days, partly cloudy days, cloudy days, and very cloudy days. Also, data for the integration of all these weather days were compared. The precentage differences for these data, using 50 second sample rate as a base, are also presented.

Silicon web process development

Thirty-five (35) furnace runs were carried out during this quarter, of which 25 produced a total of 120 web crystals. The two main thermal models for the dendritic growth process were completed and are being used to assist the design of the thermal geometry of the web growth apparatus. The first model, a finite element representation of the susceptor and crucible, was refined to give greater precision and resolution in the critical central region of the melt. The second thermal model, which describes the dissipation of the latent heat to generate thickness-velocity data, was completed. Dendritic web samples were fabricated into solar cells using a standard configuration and a standard process for a N(+) -P-P(+) configuration. The detailed engineering design was completed for a new dendritic web growth facility of greater width capability than previous facilities.
