An experimental investigation of the condensation of silicate grains

Amorphous magnesium silicate smoke particles were condensed from hydrogen and argon atmospheres containing Mg and Si0. A wide range of initial compositions were observed but all particles could be recrystallized into forsterite (Mg2Si04), by heating to 1000 C in vacuum. The amount of smoke formed decreased rapidly with temperatures between 300 and 800 K at reactant partial pressures of about 1 torr.

Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). An early estimate of small grains acreage

The author has identified the following significant results. A major advantage of this scheme is that it needs minimal human intervention. The entire scheme, with the exception of the choice of dates, can be computerized and the results obtained in minutes. The decision to limit the number of acquisitions processed to four was made to facilitate operation on the particular computer being used. Some earlier runs on another computer system were based on as many as seven biophase-1 acquisitions.

Interplanetary dust - Possible implications for comets and presolar interstellar grains

Interplanetary dust is important to studies of the origin of the solar system because it is material from comets and asteroids, the smallest surviving bodies from the early solar system. The fact that comets are the major suppliers of the millimeter meteoroids which produce optical meteors suggests that a significant fraction of the submillimeter portion of the meteoroid complex is also cometary material. While comets are probably the major source, it is important to remember that the dust presently impacting the earth was probably generated by a number of different parent bodies. The collection of interplanetary dust is considered and a description is presented of the physical properties of interplanetary dust, taking into account the structure, elemental composition, and mineralogy.

A survey of interstellar C I - Insights on carbon abundances, UV grain albedos, and pressures in the interstellar medium

Interstellar atomic carbon has been sampled over 33 different paths with visual extinctions ranging from about 0.15 to 1.5 mag. The trend of C I vs different forms of hydrogen is found to be steep and somewhat erratic. It is concluded that the observed behavior can be explained by strong differences in the responses of C I, H I, and H2 equilibria to physical conditions, together with marked variations of these conditions within different interstellar clouds.
