Preliminary experiments on the noise generated by target-type thrust reverser models

Experiments are reported on the noise generated by model V-gutter and semicylindrical target-type reversers with circular nozzles. Nozzles were 5.24 and 7.78 cm in diameter. Nozzle pressure ratio ranged from 1.25 to 1.72. The spacing between reversers and nozzle, as well as the reverser orientation, was also varied. More noise was generated with reversers than with the nozzle alone. The measured maximum overall sound pressure level varied with the sixth power of the nozzle exit velocity. Noise levels were more uniform in regard to directivity with reversers than with the nozzle alone. It is concluded that thrust reversers, can be a significant noise problem, especially for STOL aircraft using thrust reversers during approach.

The role of fluctuating forces in the generation of compressor noise

The results of a theoretical and experimental study on the role of aerodynamically-induced fluctuating forces in the sound generation by axial-flow compressors are presented. Analytical models for the generation and radiation of sound by rotor/stator combinations were developed. For the experimental substantiation of the analytical results, the technology was developed to measure fluctuating forces directly on rotating airfoils using miniature differential-pressure sensors and FM telemetry. Under the assumption of full coherence of the force field on the blade, radiated sound power was predicted from the force measurements on blades and compared with measured sound power. Both broadband radiation from a single rotating airfoil and discrete frequency radiation due to interaction of multi-bladed stator/rotor configurations were investigated. The results indicate the necessity to obtain information on the details of the force field for accurate prediction of the radiated sound spectrum.

Performance and noise generation studies of supersonic air ejectors

Experimental investigations were conducted to determine the aerodynamic performance and noise generation characteristics of five ejectors having subsonic secondary flow. Primary nozzles with equal exit area for Mach numbers 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 produced a variety of noise and pumping effects. The pumping capacity, specific power, and noise generation of the Mach 1 nozzle was the highest and its mass augmentation was the lowest among the nozzles tested. The Mach 3 nozzle was found superior in mass augmentation and it also produced the lowest noise, however its pumping capacity and specific power was the lowest.

Magnetohydrodynamic generator experimental studies

The results for an experimental study of a one wavelength MHD induction generator operating on a liquid flow are presented. First the design philosophy and the experimental generator design are summarized, including a description of the flow loop and instrumentation. Next a Fourier series method of treating the fact that the magnetic flux density produced by the stator is not a pure traveling sinusoid is described and some results summarized. This approach appears to be of interest after revisions are made, but the initial results are not accurate. Finally, some of the experimental data is summarized for various methods of excitation.

Nonuniform flow field generation for supersonic compressor stator development: Design and preliminary results

Design and preliminary results are given for a technique which can generate a nonuniform flow similar to the discharge of an impulse supersonic compressor rotor. The technique utilizes a carefully contoured, two-dimensional blunt body in a conventional hypersonic wind tunnel to generate the required flow field. To show the effects of the flow vorticity, a cascade of impulse-type blades was tested in this test stream. Some preliminary performance data are given along with comparison with previously determined uniform flow results.

NASTRAN data generation and management using interactive graphics

A method of using an interactive graphics device to generate a large portion of the input bulk data with visual checks of the structure and the card images is described. The generation starts from GRID and PBAR cards. The visual checks result from a three-dimensional display of the model in any rotated position. By detailing the steps, the time saving and cost effectiveness of this method may be judged, and its potential as a useful tool for the structural analyst may be established.

A generalized theory on the noise generation from supersonic shear layers.

A generalization is presented of Phillips' (1960) theory of noise generation by supersonic turbulent shear layers. Both Mach wave radiation and non-Mach wave noise radiation mechanisms are considered. The range of validity of Phillips' theory has been expanded to include the low supersonic and transonic ranges. These generalizations are important not only for their analytical rigor, but also for their prospective applications to practical problems in jet noise prediction and control. The noise generation mechanisms in a supersonic jet are found to differ from those in a subsonic jet. The theory is considered to offer some prospects of answering important questions in supersonic jet noise, such as noise source distribution, mean flow refraction effects, directivity, spectrum, and efficiency of noise radiation.

Generation of random hypersurfaces.

A technique to generate multidimensional random hypersurfaces with given statistical properties numerically on a digital computer is discussed in this paper. The technique is based on the linear filter theory. Using this technique, two-dimensional random surfaces are generated to illustrate the procedure. Statistics of these two-dimensional random surfaces are presented. Possible applications of these random surfaces in various physical problems are discussed.

Effects of interplanetary magnetic field on the propagation of flare-generated interplanetary shock waves.

The effects of an interplanetary magnetic field on the propagation of flare-generated interplanetary shock waves are investigated with an approximate analytical method. It is found that the interplanetary magnetic field is relatively unimportant for strong shocks as far as the shock speed and transit time are concerned. It has more significant effects for weak shocks. However, in all the situations examined, the error committed if the magnetic field is neglected is no more than 10%. It is suggested that a model without a magnetic field gives sufficiently accurate numerical results for the propagation of flare-generated shocks.

Pulsed metallic-plasma generators.

A pulsed metallic-plasma generator is described which utilizes a vacuum arc as the plasma source. The arc is initiated on the surface of a consumable cathode which can be any electrically conductive material. Ignition is accomplished by using a current pulse to vaporize a portion of a conductive film on the surface of an insulator separating the cathode from the ignition electrode. The film is regenerated during the ensuing arc. Over 100 million ignition cycles have been accomplished by using four 0.125-in. diameter zinc cathodes operating in parallel and high-density aluminum-oxide insulators. Among the applications being investigated for the generator are metal deposition, vacuum pumping, electric propulsion, and high-power dc arc interruption.

Xenon Filled Silicon Germanium Thermoelectric Generators

An analysis is presented that shows the desirability and feasibility of using a xenon fill in the initial stages of operation of a silicon-germanium radioisotope thermoelectric generator to be used in outer-planetary exploration. The xenon cover gas offers protection against oxidation and against material sublimation, and allows the generator to deliver required power throughout the prelaunch and launch phases. The protective mechanisms afforded by the xenon cover gas and the mechanization of a xenon supply system are also discussed.

Methods for reducing blade passing frequency noise generated by rotor-wake - stator interaction

A theoretical model for the generation of blade-passage noise caused by the interaction of rotor wakes with the downstream stator blades in a fan stage has been compiled. This model has combined a description of the rotor wake based on existing experimental correlations with an existing theory for the response of the stator blades to those wakes. This model of the interaction-caused blade-passage noise has been used to examine some effects of blade geometry and flow conditions on the noise generated. A set of significant parameters has been identified to reduce this interaction-caused blade-passage frequency noise. A redesign of an existing fan with the use of these concepts has produced a theoretical noise reduction of more than 7 decibels.

Noise generated by impingement of a jet upon a large flat board

Data were obtained on the noise generated by an air jet impinging on a large flat board. The board was large enough so that the flow leaving the edges of the board generated no significant noise. The impingement angle, nozzle shape and size, jet velocity, and the distance from the nozzle to the board were varied in the experiment. Far-field noise data are presented. The nozzle-alone noise contribution to the total noise was generally small and was subtracted from the total, leaving the impingement-only noise. The impingement-only noise was adequately correlated by eighth power of the peak impingement velocity and first power of the impingement area. The spectral data were correlated by a Strouhal number based on the peak impingement velocity and a characteristic impingement diameter.

An automated system for generating program documentation

A documentation program was developed in which the emphasis is placed on text content rather than flowcharting. It is keyword oriented, with 26 keywords that control the program. Seventeen of those keywords are recognized by the flowchart generator, three are related to text generation, and three have to do with control card and deck displays. The strongest advantage offered by the documentation program is that it produces the entire document. The document is prepared on 35mm microfilm, which is easy to store, and letter-size reproductions can be made inexpensively on bond paper.

Apollo experience report: Power generation system

A comprehensive review of the design philosophy and experience of the Apollo electrical power generation system is presented. The review of the system covers a period of 8 years, from conception through the Apollo 12 lunar-landing mission. The program progressed from the definition phase to hardware design, system development and qualification, and, ultimately, to the flight phase. Several problems were encountered; however, a technology evolved that enabled resolution of the problems and resulted in a fully manrated power generation system. These problems are defined and examined, and the corrective action taken is discussed. Several recommendations are made to preclude similar occurrences and to provide a more reliable fuel-cell power system.
