Relic gravitational waves and extended inflation

In extended inflation, a new version of inflation where the transition from an inflationary to a radiation-dominated universe is accomplished by bubble nucleation, bubble collisions supply a potent - and potentially detectable - source of gravitational waves. The energy density in relic gravitons from bubble collisions is expected to be about 0.00005 of closure density. Their characteristic wavelength depends on the reheating temperature. If black holes are produced by bubble collisions, they will evaporate, producing shorter-wavelength gravitons.

UV observations of the cool DBQA5 white dwarf LDS 678A - Limits on the atmospheric composition, pressure shift, and gravitational redshift derived from C I 2479

A high-resolution ultraviolet spectrum of the helium-rich degenerate LDS 678A, obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite, is presented. LDS 678A is the coolest metallic line degenerate (DQ or DZ) yet observed with the IUE echelle. These observations provide a detailed line profile of the strong C I 2479 absorption line and equivalent width W2479 = 2.35 + or - 0.06 A from which theoretical profile fits yield a carbon abundance of log C/He = (-6.7 + or- 0.2). The presence of carbon in a He-rich atmosphere lends credence to the notion that LDS 678A is a transitional case between the DB white dwarfs with nearly pure helium atmospheres and the helium-rich DQ white dwarfs which exhibit carbon bands. Corrected for an inferred pressure shift Vp = + 38 + or - 4 km/s for the C I 2479 line, a gravitational redshift of Vrs = + 26 + or - 13 km/s is deduced from which a most probable mass of 0.55 solar mass is derived.

Gravitational lensing by clusters of galaxies - Constraining the mass distribution

The possibility of placing constraints on the mass distribution of a cluster of galaxies by analyzing the cluster's gravitational lensing effect on the images of more distant galaxies is investigated theoretically in the limit of weak distortion. The steps in the proposed analysis are examined in detail, and it is concluded that detectable distortion can be produced by clusters with line-of-sight velocity dispersions of over 500 km/sec. Hence it should be possible to determine (1) the cluster center position (with accuracy equal to the mean separation of the background galaxies), (2) the cluster-potential quadrupole moment (to within about 20 percent of the total potential if velocity dispersion is 1000 km/sec), and (3) the power law for the outer-cluster density profile (if enough background galaxies in the surrounding region are observed).

Temporal variation of the earth's low-degree zonal gravitational field caused by atmospheric mass redistribution - 1980-1988

Temporal variations in the low-degree zonal harmonics of the earth's gravitational field have recently been observed by satellite laser ranging. A host of geophysical processes contribute to these variations. The present paper studies quantitatively a prime contributor, atmospheric mass redistribution, using ECMWF global surface pressure data for the period of 1980-1988. The annual and semiannual amplitudes and phases of the zonal J(l) coefficient with degree l = 2-6 with and without the oceanic inverted-barometer (IB) effect are computed to obtain the predicted effects on the orbit nodal residuals of Lageos and Starlette. These predicted values are then compared with observations. It is found that the atmospheric influence, combined with the hydrological influence agree well with the Lageos observation for the annual term. The corresponding match appears poorer for Starlette.

The binary Feige 24 - The mass, radius, and gravitational redshift of the DA white dwarf

Observations are reported which refine the binary ephemeris of the Feige 24 system, which contains a peculiar hot DA white dwarf and an M dwarf with an atmosphere illuminated by extreme ultraviolet radiation from the white dwarf. With the new ephemeris and a set of IUE high-dispersion spectra, showing phase-dependent redshifted C IV, N V, and Si IV resonance lines, the orbital velocity, and hence the mass (0.54 + or - 0.20 solar masses), and the gravitational redshift of the white dwarf (14.1 + or - 5.2 km/s) are determined independently. It is shown that the measured Einstein redshift is consistent with an estimated radius for the white dwarf obtained from a model atmosphere solid angle and a parallax measurement. This radius is twice the Hamada-Salpeter radius for the given mass and offers a prospect to investigate the presence of a massive hydrogen envelope in that white dwarf star.

Gravitational clustering in the expanding universe - Controlled high-resolution studies in two dimensions

Results are presented from a series of gravitational clustering simulations in two dimensions. These simulations are a significant departure from previous work, since in two dimensions one can have large dynamic range in both length scale and mass using present computer technology. Controlled experiments were conducted by varying the slope of power-law initial density fluctuation spectra and varying cutoffs at large k, while holding constant the phases of individual Fourier components and the scale of nonlinearity. Filaments are found in many different simulations, even with pure power-law initial conditions. By direct comparison, filaments, called 'second-generation pancakes' are shown to arise as a consequence of mild nonlinearity on scales much larger than the correlation length and are not relics of an initial lattice or due to sparse sampling of the Fourier components. Bumps of low amplitude in the two-point correlation are found to be generic but usually only statistical fluctuations. Power spectra are much easier to relate to initial conditions, and seem to follow a simple triangular shape (on log-log plot) in the nonlinear regime. The rms density fluctuation with Gaussian smoothing is the most stable indicator of nonlinearity.

Gravitational force and the cardiovascular system

Ground-based simulation studies have been conducted to clarify the problems of the cardiovascular adaptation to alterations in gravitational force. Simulated microgravity experiments resulted in increases in cardiac stretch, urine flow, and sodium excretion, which were accompanied by lower plasma renin, aldosterone, and ADH. There appears to be a decrease in plasma volume as well as in sympathetic tone after 2-3 days of 0 Gz. Complete adjustment to 0 Gz is found within 8 h without a decrease in plasma volume, when subjects are allowed to dehydrate mildly.

Gravitational microlensing by double stars and planetary systems

Almost all stars are in binary systems. When the separation between the two components is comparable to the Einstein ring radius corresponding to the combined mass of the binary acting as a gravitational lens, then an extra pair of images can be created, and the light curve of a lensed source becomes complicated. It is estimated that about 10 percent of all lensing episodes of the Galactic bulge stars will strongly display the binary nature of the lens. The effect is strong even if the companion is a planet. A massive search for microlensing of the Galactic bulge stars may lead to a discovery of the first extrasolar planetary systems.

Optimum data weighting and error calibration for estimation of gravitational parameters

A new approach has been developed for determining consistent satellite-tracking data weights in solutions for the satellite-only gravitational models. The method employs subset least-squares solutions of the satellite data contained within the complete solution and requires that the differences of the parameters of subset solutions and the complete solution to be in agreement with their error estimates by adjusting the data weights. GEM-T2 model was recently computed and adjusted through a direct application of this method. The estimated data weights are markedly smaller than the weights implied by the formal uncertainties of the measurements. Orbital arc tests as well as surface gravity comparisons show significant improvements for solutions when more realistic data weighting is achieved.

Infrared and visible photometry of the gravitational lens systems 2237 + 030

As part of a program of high spatial resolution imaging of gravitationally lensed sources in the visible and IR, images of 2237 + 030 were obtained in the Gunn r and infrared J, H, K, and 3.3 micron filters. The results of the photometry of the four bright quasar components provide evidence of extinction through the lens and a determination of the extinction law in the galaxy is made. The energy distribution shows evidence of a sharp decrease of the spectral index at wavelengths longer than a rest wavelength of 1 micron. Assuming that microlensing amplification in the IR is of similar strength as in the visible, the data constrain the suggested microlensing event of August-September 1988 to a time scale of 100 days.

First- and second-epoch VLBI observations of the gravitational lens system 2016 + 112

The structure of A and B radio components at the milliarcsecond level is examined on the basis of two 18-cm Mark III VLBI observations of the 2016 + 112 gravitational lens system. One hypothesis consistent with all of the numerous models considered is that images A and B are not related by linear magnification because the source is evolving on a time scale comparable to or shorter than the time delay between images. Models not required to be consistent with linear magnification are not. Models required to be consistent with linear magnification either fit the data significantly less well or indicate significantly different matrices for the two epochs.

The correlation function of galaxy ellipticities produced by gravitational lensing

The correlation of galaxy ellipticities produced by gravitational lensing is calculated as a function of the power spectrum of density fluctuations in the universe by generalizing an analytical method developed by Gunn (1967). The method is applied to a model where identical objects with spherically symmetric density profiles are randomly laid down in space, and to the cold dark matter model. The possibility of detecting this correlation is discussed. Although an ellipticity correlation can also be caused by an intrinsic alignment of the axes of galaxies belonging to a cluster or a supercluster, a method is suggested by which one type of correlation can be distinguished from another. The advantage of this ellipticity correlation is that it is one of the few astronomical observations that can directly probe large-scale mass fluctuations in the universe.

Gravitational spreading of Danu, Freyja and Maxwell Montes, Venus

The potential energy of elevated terrain tends to drive the collapse of the topography. This process of gravitational spreading is likely to be more important on Venus than on Earth because the higher surface temperature weakens the crust. The highest topography on Venus is Ishtar Terra. The high plateau of Lakshmi Planum has an average elevation of 3 km above mean planetary radius, and is surrounded by mountain belts. Freyja, Danu, and Maxwell Montes rise, on average, an additional 3, 0.5, and 5 km above the plateau, respectively. Recent high resolution Magellan radar images of this area, east of approx. 330 deg E, reveal widespread evidence for gravity spreading. Some observational evidence is described for gravity spreading and the implications are discussed in terms of simple mechanical models. Several simple models predict that gravity spreading should be an important process on Venus. One difficulty in using remote observations to infer interior properties is that the observed features may not have formed in response to stresses which are still active. Several causes of surface topography are briefly examined.

Squeezed states in the theory of primordial gravitational waves

It is shown that squeezed states of primordial gravitational waves are inevitably produced in the course of cosmological evolution. The theory of squeezed gravitons is very similar to the theory of squeezed light. Squeezed parameters and statistical properties of the expected relic gravity-wave radiation are described.

Wormholes and negative energy from the gravitationally squeezed vacuum

Minkowski-signature wormhole solutions of the Einstein field equations require the existence of negative energy density in the vicinity of their throats. We point out that the gravitational interaction automatically generates squeezed vacuum states of matter, which by their nature, entail negative energy and, thus, provide a natural source for maintaining this class of wormholes.

Spectral differences in the QSO pairs Q1634 + 267A,B and Q2345 + 007A,B and the gravitational lens interpretation

High S/N spectra of two candidate gravitational lens pairs, over the wavelength range 3150-7000 A at 4-6 A resolution are obtained in order to compare the emission line, continuum, and absorption line properties. The continuum shapes of Q1634 + 267A,B over the observed wavelength range agree remarkably well, and a constant multiplicative factor of 3.28 is found for the ratio A/B over the whole observed wavelength range. In agreement with previous investigations, it is found that the redshifts of the C III 1909 emission line are consistent with zero relative velocity shift and that the line profiles in the two images are identical. The continua of Q2345 + 007A and B match fairly well over the whole observed wavelength range if a constant scaling factor of 2.51 is used. Scaled difference spectra show that the Ly-alpha, NV, CIII, and Fe II emission lines are stronger relative to the continuum in Q2345 + 007B than in A. It is concluded that the pairs of images constituting Q1634 + 267A and B and Q2345 + 007A and B both result from gravitatinal lensing.

On the evolution of gravitationally unstable protostellar disks

2D, N-body simulations of the nonlinear development of long-wavelength instabilities predicted to occur early in the formation stage of protostellar disks forming single stars are presented under conditions of controlled energy loss. It is found that the thermodynamics and long-term evolution of gravitationally unstable disks are intimately coupled: the global evolution rate is linearly proportional to the rate at which dissipated energy reaches and escapes from the surfaces of the disk. An upper limit is obtained to the rate at which energy is lost if it is assumed that the disk maintains vertical isothermality.
