Fermion-bag inspired Hamiltonian lattice field theory for fermionic quantum criticality

Motivated by the fermion-bag approach, in this work we construct a new class of Hamiltonian lattice field theories that can help us to study fermionic quantum critical points, particularly those with four-fermion interactions. Although these theories are constructed in discrete time with a finite temporal lattice spacing ϵ, when ϵ → 0, conventional continuous-time Hamiltonian lattice field theories are recovered. The fermion-bag algorithms run relatively faster when ϵ = 1 as compared to ϵ → 0 but still allow us to compute universal quantities near the quantum critical point even at such a large value of ϵ. As an example of this new approach, here we study the $N_f$ = 1 Gross-Neveu chiral-Ising universality class in 2 + 1 dimensions by calculating the critical scaling of the staggered mass order parameter. We show that we are able to study lattice sizes up to 100 2 sites when ϵ = 1, while with comparable resources we can reach lattice sizes of only up to 64 2 when ϵ → 0. The critical exponents obtained in both these studies match within errors.

Constraint of pionless EFT using two-nucleon spectra from lattice QCD

Finite-volume pionless effective field theory (FVEFT π/ ) at next-to-leading order (NLO) is used to analyze the two-nucleon lattice QCD spectrum of Ref. [1], performed at quark masses corresponding to a pion mass of approximately 800 MeV. Specifically, the effective theory is formulated in finite volume, and variational sets of wave functions are optimized using differential programming. Using these wave functions projected to the appropriate finite-volume symmetry group, variational bounds from FVEFT π/ are obtained for the ground state, as well as excited states. By comparison with the lattice QCD GEVP spectrum, different low energy constants (LECs) are constrained. Furthermore, relativistic corrections are incorporated, allowing for the s-d-wave mixing term in the deuteron channel.

The Second Data Release of the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH)

The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) are the largest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and close enough to allow for a detailed exploration of their structure and formation history. The Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH) is a community Dark Energy Camera (DECam) survey of the Magellanic Clouds using ∼50 nights to sample over ∼2400 deg{sup 2} centered on the Clouds at ∼20% filling factor (but with contiguous coverage in the central regions) and to depths of ∼24th mag in ugriz. The primary goals of SMASH are to map out the extended stellar peripheries of the Clouds and uncover their complicated interaction and accretion history as well as to derive spatially resolved star formation histories of the central regions and create a “movie” of their past star formation. Here we announce the second SMASH public data release (DR2), which contains all 197 fully calibrated DECam fields including the main body fields in the central regions. The DR2 data are available through the Astro Data Lab hosted by the NSF’s National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory. We highlight three science cases that make use of the SMASH DR2 data and will be published in the future: (1) preliminary star formation histories of the LMC, (2) the search for Magellanic star clusters using citizen scientists, and, (3) photometric metallicities of Magellanic Cloud stars using the DECam u-band.

The SAGEX review on scattering amplitudes Chapter 2: An invitation to color-kinematics duality and the double copy

Abstract Advances in scattering amplitudes have exposed previously-hidden color-kinematics and double-copy structures in theories ranging from gauge and gravity theories to effective field theories such as chiral perturbation theory and the Born–Infeld model. These novel structures both simplify higher-order calculations and pose tantalizing questions related to a unified framework underlying relativistic quantum theories. This introductory mini-review article invites further exploration of these topics. After a brief introduction to color-kinematics duality and the double copy as they emerge at tree and loop-level in gauge and gravity theories, we present two distinct examples: (1) an introduction to the web of double-copy-constructible theories, and (2) a discussion of the application of the double copy to calculation relevant to gravitational-wave physics.

Applications of flow models to the generation of correlated lattice QCD ensembles

Machine-learned normalizing flows can be used in the context of lattice quantum field theory to generate statistically correlated ensembles of lattice gauge fields at different action parameters. This work demonstrates how these correlations can be exploited for variance reduction in the computation of observables. Three different proof-of-concept applications are demonstrated using a novel residual flow architecture: continuum limits of gauge theories, the mass dependence of QCD observables, and hadronic matrix elements based on the Feynman–Hellmann approach. In all three cases, it is shown that statistical uncertainties are significantly reduced when machine-learned flows are incorporated as compared with the same calculations performed with uncorrelated ensembles or direct reweighting. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,324 new measurements from 878 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on High Energy Soft QCD and Diffraction and one on the Determination of CKM Angles from B Hadrons. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 98 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 22 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Pariicle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print and as a web version optimized for use on phones as well as an Android app.

IR dynamics from UV divergences: UV/IR mixing, NCFT, and the hierarchy problem

The persistence of the hierarchy problem points to a violation of effective field theory expectations. A compelling possibility is that this results from a physical breakdown of EFT, which may arise from correlations between ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) physics. To this end, we study noncommutative field theory (NCFT) as a toy model of UV/IR mixing which generates an emergent infrared scale from ultraviolet dynamics. We explore the range of such theories where ultraviolet divergences are transmogrified into infrared scales, focusing particularly on the properties of Yukawa theory, where we identify a new infrared pole accessible in the s-channel of the Lorentzian theory. We further investigate the interplay between UV-finiteness and UV/IR mixing by studying properties of the softly-broken noncommutative Wess-Zumino model as soft terms are varied relative to the cutoff. While the Lorentz violation inherent to noncommutative theories may limit their direct application to the hierarchy problem, these toy models provide general lessons to guide the realization of UV/IR mixing in more realistic theories.

Comments on the double cone wormhole

In this paper we revisit the double cone wormhole introduced by Saad, Shenker and Stanford (SSS), which was shown to reproduce the ramp in the spectral form factor. As a first approximation we can say that this solution computes Tr[e –iKT ], a trace of the “evolution” operator that generates Schwarzschild time translations on the two sided wormhole geometry. This point of view leads to a simple way to compute the normalization factor of the wormhole. When we have bulk matter fields, SSS suggested using a modified evolution K ~ which involves a slightly complex geometry, so that we are really computing Tr[e –iK ~ T ]. We argue that, for general black holes, the spectrum of K ~ is given by quasinormal mode frequencies. We explain that this reproduces various features that were previously predicted from the spectral form factor on hydrodynamics grounds. We also give a general algebraic construction of the modified boost in terms of operators constructed from half sided modular inclusions. For the special case of JT gravity, we work out the backreaction of matter on the geometry of the double cone and find that it deforms the geometry in an undesirable direction. We finally give some comments on the possible physical interpretation of K ~ .

Explicit entropic proofs of irreversibility theorems for holographic RG flows

We revisit the existence of monotonic quantities along renormalization group flows using only the Null Energy Condition and the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for the entanglement entropy of field theories with anti-de Sitter gravity duals. In particular, we consider flows within the same dimension and holographically reprove the c-, F -, and a-theorems in dimensions two, three, and four. We focus on the family of maximally spherical entangling surfaces, define a quasi-constant of motion corresponding to the breaking of conformal invariance, and use a properly defined distance between minimal surfaces to construct a holographic c-function that is monotonic along the flow. We then apply our method to the case of flows across dimensions: there, we reprove the monotonicity of flows from AdS D+1 to AdS 3 and prove the novel case of flows from AdS 5 to AdS 4 .

Putting all the X in one basket: Updated X-ray constraints on sub-GeV Dark Matter

Sub-GeV dark matter particles can annihilate or decay producing e ± pairs which upscatter the low-energy photon fields in the Galaxy and generate an X-ray emission (via the Inverse Compton effect). Here, using X-ray data from X MM -N EWTON , I NTEGRAL , N U S TAR and S UZAKU , we derive new constraints on this class of dark matter (DM). In the annihilation case, our new bounds are the strongest available for DM masses above 180 MeV, reaching $\langle$σv$\rangle$ ≲ 10 -28 cm 3 /s for m DM ≃ 1 GeV. In the decay case, our bounds are the strongest to date over a large fraction of the considered mass range, constraining τ ≳ 10 28 s for m DM ≃ 1 GeV and improving by up to 3 orders of magnitude upon existing limits.

Quantum Langevin theory for two coupled phase-conjugated electromagnetic waves

We provide a general macroscopic phenomenological formula of quantum Langevin equations for two coupled phase-conjugated electromagnetic fields with linear loss (gain) and complex nonlinear coupling coefficient. The macroscopic phenomenological formula is obtained from the coupling matrix to preserve the field commutation relations and correlations, which does not require knowing the microscopic details of light-matter interaction and internal atomic structures. To validate this phenomenological formula, we take spontaneous four-wave mixing in a double-Λ four-level atomic system as an example to numerically confirm that our macroscopic phenomenological result is consistent with that obtained from the microscopic Heisenberg-Langevin theory. We find that a complex-valued nonlinear coupling coefficient can lead to noises even without linear gain or loss. Lastly, we apply the quantum Langevin equations to study the effects of linear gain and loss, complex phase mismatching, as well as complex nonlinear coupling coefficient in entangled photon pair (biphoton) generation, particularly to their temporal quantum correlations.

Toward a microscopic picture of hadronization and multi-parton processes

This project advanced the understanding of how quarks and gluons produced in high-energy collisions transform into the hadrons observed in particle detectors, a fundamental process known as quantum chromodynamics (QCD) hadronization. By combining theoretical calculations, quantum simulation methods, and modern AI techniques, the research developed new tools to study multi-parton dynamics and nonperturbative effects that are essential for interpreting data from current and future nuclear physics experiments. Key outcomes include new theoretical frameworks for jet and hadron measurements, pioneering quantum simulation algorithms for real-time dynamics in field theories, and the development of advanced machine-learning models, such as diffusion models and explainable classifiers, to simulate and analyze collider events. These results are directly relevant to experiments at Jefferson Lab, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the future Electron-Ion Collider, and they also have a broader impact in areas such as quantum information science and data-driven modeling of complex systems. The project supported the training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and contributed to the broader scientific community through publications, workshops, and collaborative activities. Overall, this work provides new insights into the microscopic mechanisms of hadron formation and establishes a foundation for future studies at the intersection of nuclear physics, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.

2, 12, 117, 1959, 45171, 1170086, …: a Hilbert series for the QCD chiral Lagrangian

We apply Hilbert series techniques to the enumeration of operators in the mesonic QCD chiral Lagrangian. Existing Hilbert series technologies for non-linear realizations are extended to incorporate the external fields. The action of charge conjugation is addressed by folding the $\mathfrak{su}(n)$ Dynkin diagrams, which we detail in an appendix that can be read separately as it has potential broader applications. New results include the enumeration of anomalous operators appearing in the chiral Lagrangian at order p 8 , as well as enumeration of CP -even, CP -odd, C -odd, and P -odd terms beginning from order p 6 . The method is extendable to very high orders, and we present results up to order p 16 . (The title sequence is the number of independent C -even and P -even operators in the mesonic QCD chiral Lagrangian with three light flavors of quarks, at chiral dimensions p 2 , p 4 , p 6 , …)

Bootstrapping a stress-tensor form factor through eight loops

We bootstrap the three-point form factor of the chiral stress-tensor multiplet in planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at six, seven, and eight loops, using boundary data from the form factor operator product expansion. This may represent the highest perturbative order to which multi-variate quantities in a unitary four-dimensional quantum field theory have been computed. In computing this form factor, we observe and employ new restrictions on pairs and triples of adjacent letters in the symbol. We provide details about the function space required to describe the form factor through eight loops. Plotting the results on various lines provides striking numerical evidence for a finite radius of convergence of perturbation theory. By the principle of maximal transcendentality, our results are expected to give the highest weight part of the gg → Hg and H → ggg amplitudes in the heavy-top limit of QCD through eight loops. These results were also recently used to discover a new antipodal duality between this form factor and a six-point amplitude in the same theory.

Probing Top-Quark–Electron Interactions at Future Colliders

Top quark interactions offer a window into possible new high scale physics and many models of new physics predict that the top quark interactions will deviate significantly from those predicted by the standard model. We present an analysis of the experimental restrictions on anomalous 4-fermion 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − $⁢𝑡\bar{⁢𝑡}$ operators that is accurate to next-to-leading order (NLO) in both the electroweak and QCD interactions within the standard model effective field theory framework. At NLO, there is sensitivity to an extended set of anomalous interactions beyond those probed at leading order. A comparison of current limits from electroweak precision observables, along with expected future limits from Drell-Yan and $⁢𝑡\bar{⁢𝑡}$𝑒 +⁢ 𝑒 − production at the high luminosity LHC, from deep inelastic scattering at the EIC, and from projected sensitivities at the future FCC-ee and CEPC machines demonstrates that each of these programs extends the precision understanding of the interactions of top quarks.

Tensor supercurrent in QCD

An external Abelian magnetic field excites in the QCD vacuum a tensor super current that represents the tensor polarization of the chiral condensate. This tensor supercurrent can be deduced from the chiral lagrangian in the presence of anoma lies; a similar tensor supercurrent emerges in rotating systems at finite chemical potential. We discuss the microscopic origin of this supercurrent and argue that it screens the instanton-anti-instanton $I\overline I$ molecules in the QCD vacuum, similarly to the vector supercurrent screening Abrikosov vortices in a superconductor. A number of possible experimental manifestations of the tensor supercurrent are discussed: i) spin alignment of axial-vector and vector mesons in heavy ion collisions; ii) tensor charge of the nucleon; iii) transversity of quark distributions in polarized nucleons.

Neutron stars as photon double-lenses: Constraining resonant conversion into ALPs

Axion-photon conversion is a prime mechanism to detect axion-like particles that share a coupling to the photon. We point out that in the vicinity of neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, magnetars, the effective photon mass receives comparable but opposite contributions from free electrons and the radiation field. This leads to an energy-dependent resonance condition for conversion that can be met for arbitrary light axions and leveraged when using systems with detected radio component. Using the magnetar SGR J1745-2900 as an exemplary source, we demonstrate that sensitivity to |g aγ | ~ 10 -12 GeV -1 or better can be gained for m a ≲ 10 -6 eV, with the potential to improve current constraints on the axion-photon coupling by more than one order of magnitude over a broad mass range. With growing insights into the physical conditions of magnetospheres of magnetars, the method hosts the potential to become a serious competitor to future experiments such as ALPS-II and IAXO in the search for axion-like particles.
