Iron-absorption band analysis for the discrimination of iron-rich zones

The author has identified the following significant results. Study has concentrated on the two primary aspects of the project, structural analysis through evaluation of lineaments and circular features and spectral analyses through digital computer-processing techniques. Several previously unrecognized lineaments are mapped which may be the surface manifestations of major fault or fracture zones. Two of these, the Walker Lane and the Midas Trench lineament system, transect the predominantly NNE-NNW-trending moutain ranges for more than 500 km. Correlation of major lineaments with productive mining districts implies a genetic relationship, the 50 circular or elliptical features delineated suggest a related role for Tertiary volcanism. Color-ratio composites have been used to identify limonitic zones and to discriminate mafic and felsic rock by combing diazo color transparencies of three different ratios. EROS Data Center scene identification number for color composite in this report is ER 1 CC 500. Refinement of enhancement procedures for the ratio images is progressing. Fieldwork in coordination with both spectral and structural analyses is underway.

Interplanetary magnetic field data book

An interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) data set is presented that is uniform with respect to inclusion of cislunar IMF data only, and which has as complete time coverage as presently possible over a full solar cycle. Macroscale phenomena in the interplanetary medium (sector structure, heliolatitude variations, solar cycle variations, etc.) and other phenomena (e.g., ground level cosmic-ray events) for which knowledge of the IMF with hourly resolution is necessary, are discussed. Listings and plots of cislunar hourly averaged IMP parameters over the period November 27, 1963, to May 17, 1974, are presented along with discussion of the mutual consistency of the IMF data used herein. The magnetic tape from which the plots and listings were generated, which is available from the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC), is also discussed.

Experimental pitch-, yaw-, and roll-damping characteristics of a shuttle orbiter at Mach number 8

Wind tunnel tests were conducted to measure the pitch-, yaw-, and roll-damping characteristics of a modified 089B shuttle orbiter. These tests were conducted for NASA-Langley at the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility of the Arnold Engineering Development Center. Data were obtained utilizing the small amplitude forced-oscillation technique at angles of attack of -4.9 to 26.5 deg at Reynolds numbers, based on model length, of 1,180,000 to 4,820,000. The orbiter was dynamically stable in pitch, yaw, and roll, and the pitch derivatives were dependent on Reynolds number, while the roll derivatives were independent of Reynolds number.

Analysis of data for LANDSAT (ERTS) follow-on

The author has identified the following significant results. Daily weather service satellite photographs of the midwest were found to be of great assistance before ordering EROS Data Center products. These weather satellite images are a quick and inexpensive record of the location of cloud masses, which supplements the percent of cloud catalogues. Savings of time and money were made because the location of cloud cover was known before any imagery was ordered.

Cases in the relation of research on remote sensing to decisionmakers in a state agency

The use is considered of various management tools in order to assess their effects on the anticipated relevance of the remote sensing research to the needs of government agencies. Among these tools are different organizational structures and ways of functioning, which are applied to the design and management of projects and to the communication of research results. The characteristics of data and information flow, and technology transfer are discussed along with the management of three projects and a remote sensing data center in terms of the use of some tools for influencing these processes.

Reduction and analysis of ATS-6 data

A data reduction program was developed and debugged which presents the Aerospace particle data and the UCLA magnetometer data in a variety of formats suitable for analysis as well as further data processing. Fifty days of data were processed through this program and analysis of these data were begun. In addition, modifications were made to an old ATS-1 program in order to enable this program to process ATS-1 data obtained simultaneously with ATS-6 data acquisitions during 1974. Some analysis of ATS-1 data and comparison with ATS-6 data also went forward. Preparations were begun to transfer ATS-6 data to the National Space Science Data Center. These efforts are described in detail.

A methodology for small scale rural land use mapping in semi-arid developing countries using orbital imagery. Part 5: Experimental and operational techniques of mapping land use

The author has identified the following significant results. Scope of the preprocessing techniques was restricted to standard material from the EROS Data Center accompanied by some enlarging procedures and the use of the diazo process. Investigation has shown that the most appropriate sampling strategy for this study is the stratified random technique. A viable sampling procedure, together with a method for determining minimum number of sample points in order to test results of any interpretation are presented.

Payload integration and operations

Integration and operation of Spacelab payloads presents major challenges to engineering disciplines in areas of ground operations and flight mission operations. The integration of ground operations encompasses activities performed by the instrument developers and principal investigators and by the centralized payload integration site and launch site. The payload will be operated on orbit by a payload crew trained in payload experimentation and by a payload operations control center where investigator science groups and operations personnel are prepared to provide support. The payload mission planning, control center, data processing facility and operations are developed and verified prior to realtime flight operations. The mission management approach to minimize program costs and impacts to payloads and the Space Transportation System/Spacelab accommodations is presented.

Gravity field of Venus - A preliminary analysis

The gravitational field of Venus obtained by tracking the Pioneer Venus Orbiter is examined. For each spacecraft orbit, two hours of Doppler data centered around periapsis were used to estimate spacecraft position and velocity and the velocity residuals obtained were spline fit and differentiated to produce line of sight gravitational accelerations. Consistent variations in line of sight accelerations from orbit to orbit reveal the presence of gravitational anomalies. A simulation of isostatic compensation for an elevated region on the surface of Venus indicates that the mean depth of compensation is no greater than about 100 km. Gravitational spectra obtained from a Fourier analysis of line of sight accelerations from selected Venus orbits are compared to the earth's gravitational spectrum and spherical harmonic gravitational potential power spectra of the earth, the moon and Mars. The Venus power spectrum is found to be remarkably similar to that of the earth, however systematic variations in the harmonics suggest differences in dynamic processes or lithospheric behavior.

Cost and performance characteristics of data system configurations for processing remotely sensed data

Some alternative approaches to constructing a large remote-sensing data system are explored. The cost and performance implications of using a collection of 'small' computers versus using one large computer are examined. Several architectures and associated costs for the large data system supporting a single data center are presented. Recurring cost factors (maintenance and operations) currently slightly favor the single large-machine architecture, but other factors may dictate the choice of one of the two multimachine architectures discussed.
