Gemini Summary Conference

The Gemini Summary Conference was held on February 1 and 2, 1967, at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Tex. The conference emphasized the highlights of the Gemini Program and especially the flight results of the last five missions. This report contains the 21 technical papers presented at the conference as well as an introduction by George E. Mueller and concluding remarks by George M. Low. The technical papers are divided into five sections: the first describes the rendezvous, docking, and tethered-vehicle operations involving the spacecraft and a target vehicle; the second presents various aspects of extravehicular activity; the third concerns the operational support of the missions ; the fourth cover the experiments conducted during the missions; and the fifth compares the astronaut flight and simulation experiences and relates the Gemini results to the Apollo Program.

Occulting-filter method for obtaining flashing-light visibility data

Occulting-filter technique allows several types of flashing-light visibility data necessary for rendezvous and docking maneuvers, to be obtained for studying the perception of flashes at the visual threshold. The indications are that the method can be used to compare sources of radically different spectral composition.

High-powered automatic latching device

Latches automatically lock together two remotely controlled bodies when their triggers are engaged by the docking ring of the lesser body. Latches are disengaged by manual actuation of the handle of each latch through two complete cycles. Emergency locking by manual actuation is also provided.

An Analysis of Potential Space Shuttle Cargo-Handling Modes of Operation

This report attempts to indicate the current status of Space Shuttle cargo handling analysis. It is intended for use by the various organizations operating in support of the Space Shuttle effort who are investigating problems not necessarily affected by the frequent configuration and approach changes imposed on the primary task team and contractor personnel. The various studies have been analyzed and the results interwoven with the results of in-house efforts. The problems involved in orbital docking, payload extraction and transfer, cargo handling, and special-purpose missions are discussed and some tentative conclusions and recommendations are presented. This report has been reviewed and approved for release by the MSFC Shuttle Task Team. However, no statements made herein should be interpreted as position statements with respect to the Space Shuttle, the direction of future efforts, or intended methods of operation. This document reflects the view of the author, following analysis of the data available, and should not be construed as an official recommendation.

Experiment S010: Agena micrometeorite collection

A study was made of the micrometeoroid content of the upper atmosphere and the near-earth space environment. Highly polished collection surfaces attached to the target docking adapter (TDA) were exposed to micrometeorite impact and debris collection during the Gemini 8, 9, and 10 missions. Also, the device was attached to the Gemini Agena target vehicle (GATV) during the Gemini 12 mission. The effects of space environment exposure on viable microorganisms were recorded. No substantive data regarding space environment micrometeorite content were derived from the Gemini 9 or 12 missions. However, some substantive data were obtained from the experiment package that was retrieved from the Gemini 10 mission. The micrometeorite-flux values obtained were in general agreement with values obtained from previous experiments by the use of other experimental equipment. The microorganisms that were retrieved from the Gemini 10 experiment package did not survive. However, the same kinds of specimens inside the package had good survival rates. Upon initial analysis, it appeared that the closed-cover shielding was a contributing factor in the protection and survival of the microorganisms.

Mars surface sample return missions via solar electric propulsion

The characteristics and capabilities are described of solar electric propulsion (SEP) for performing Mars Surface Sample Return (MSSR) missions. The scope of the study emphasizes trajectory/payload analysis and the comparison of mission/system tradeoff options. The MSSR mission is examined only for the 1981-82 launch opportunity. Several other study constraints which bear directly on the results obtained are: (1) return samples in the range 5-25 kg, (2) use of lifting (offset C.G.) atmospheric entry at Mars which allows a low ratio (1.25) of entry weight to landed weight, and (3) rendezvous and docking in Mars orbit. Major results of the study are presented as performance curves of earth departure mass versus sample size for a number of different mission/system options. These options represent a spectrum of trip time, launch vehicle capability, combinations of low-thrust and ballistic maneuvers, chemical retro type, and earth recovery mode.

Application of DOT-MORSE coupling to the analysis of three-dimensional SNAP shielding problems

The use of discrete ordinates and Monte Carlo techniques to solve radiation transport problems is discussed. A general discussion of two possible coupling schemes is given for the two methods. The calculation of the reactor radiation scattered from a docked service and command module is used as an example of coupling discrete ordinates (DOT) and Monte Carlo (MORSE) calculations.
