Core Model Proposal #399: Updating the SSP Database (v3.0) (Population, GDP, and Labor Force) and Labor Productivity (KLEM)

This Core Model Proposal (CMP) updates the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) database to a recent version (v3.0.1; released in 2024) within GCAM. Currently, GCAM relies on socioeconomic drivers, including population, GDP, and labor force projections, from the original SSP database version released in 2013. These projections, provided by independent socioeconomic dynamic models (e.g., multi-dimensional demographic models and macroeconomic models of convergence growth), may need regular updates when (1) near-term observations become available and (2) there are updates and advancements in the socioeconomic modeling. Timely updates of socioeconomic drivers in global economic equilibrium and multisector dynamic modeling will ensure (1) alignment of historical years and near-term projections with observations, enhancing base year calibrations, including calibration parameters and labor productivity, and (2) improvement of long-term projections with updated socioeconomic drivers, which set the scale of the economy. This CMP updates the SSP data (from v2013 to v2024) and also fixes/reconciles historical GDP data sources in GCAM. We investigate the impact of these updates on GCAM projections.

Analysis of Deformation Mechanisms, Strain Localization, and Fracture in Highly Irradiated Austenitic Steels – Light-Water Reactor Core Materials – via Advanced inSEM Techniques

The present report describes the establishing of an advanced experimental approach – high-resolution digital image correlation or µDIC – for testing miniature irradiated specimens in the ORNL’s Low Activation Materials Development and Analysis (LAMDA) facility. As expected, the µDIC approach will allow for studying strain localization inside grains, for instance, during dislocation channel-grain boundary interaction processes. This information is of high importance for understanding degradation processes in irradiated austenitic steels – in-core materials of Light Water Reactors. The Level 4 report provides a brief introduction, lists materials designated for µDIC testing and delivered in LAMDA this FY, discusses methodical concerns and preliminary observations.

Carbon ore, rare earth, and critical minerals (core-cm) assessment of san juan and raton coal basins: what is the future potential of coal in the san juan and raton basins, new mexico and colorado

This report summarizes results from the CORE-CM project in the San Juan and Raton basins of New Mexico and Colorado and ultimately begins to address what is the future of coal in the San Juan and Raton basins. The objective of this project was to determine the nonfuel carbon-based products (CBP), critical minerals, and rare earth elements (REE) potential in coal and related stratigraphic units in the San Juan and Raton basins and adjacent areas. This project delineated favorable geologic terrains and priority areas containing potential CBP, critical minerals, and REE deposits for the DOE mandate, which also is a priority of the NMBGMR and state of New Mexico. This project is important to the state because CBP, critical minerals, and REE resources must be identified before land use decisions are made by government officials. Future mining of CBP, critical minerals, and REE will directly benefit the economy of New Mexico. Furthermore, it is crucial to re-establish a domestic source of critical minerals and REE in the U.S. to help secure the nation’s clean energy future, to reduce the vulnerability of the U.S. to material shortages related to national defense, and to maintain our global technical and economic competitiveness. In addition to these benefits, students at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT) and San

Microreactor Core Transportation Cask Model Description for Criticality Safety Validation Basis Assessment (Rev. 1)

Criticality safety analyses are completed on transportation casks used for microreactor whole core shipment to provide examples of models and analyses to industry, regulators, and nuclear community at large to be used in verification and validation analyses of similar applications. The microreactors considered are based on a Gas-Cooled Microreactor (GCMR) and a Heat-Pipe Microreactor (HPMR), both utilize HALEU fuel in the form of TRISO particles and various other design options considered in industry microreactor designs. Variant design options of GCMR and HPMR were also investigated to provide a wider application range for each technology. Criticality safety analyses for the GCMR and HPMR packages were performed using the CSAS6 sequence of SCALE 6.3.2 with the ENDF/B-VII.1-based continuous energy neutron libraries. Different scenarios were investigated, including normal operation and water flooded conditions to represent nominal and hypothetical accident scenarios. Sensitivity and similarity analyses are also performed using the TSUNAMI sequence of SCALE 6.3.2, and the similarity analysis uses all the experiments from the ICSBEP Handbook with Intermediate and mixed Enriched Uranium (IEU) and Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) systems, together with additional experiments that are sponsored by the DNCSH program. Many experiments were found marginally similar to the GCMR and HPMR models, with similarity index (ck) values greater than 0.8 but less than 0.9. Among all the experiments analyzed, no case has a ck value greater than 0.9, indicating that additional critical experiments might be needed to further validate the criticality safety models for microreactors transport packages.

Core Model Proposal #377: Breaking out food processing sector in GCAM

Purpose: This Core Model Proposal (CMP) expands the representation of detailed industry (CMP-326) in GCAM by separating the food processing sector from the aggregate “other industry sector”. Historical energy use is calibrated to IEA data for food processing, with some infilling for regions with limited IEA data. Food processing is linked to the GCAM food demand module, setting the energy demand for food processing in future periods based on food demand. While the direct price feedback is currently muted and the linkage is represented at the aggregated regional level, this CMP establishes the groundwork for a more detailed connection between the agrifood sectors and energy sectors in future work.

Core Model Proposal 382: Representing agricultural and food storage

Purpose: This Core Model Proposal develops data and methods to represent agricultural storage and the inter-period stockholding behavior for agricultural and food products in global economic and multisector dynamic modeling. In particular, the proposal aims to (1) restructure and rebalance the supply-utilization accounts to separate stock variations, opening stock, closing stock, and loss associated with stockholding behavior, (2) incorporate agricultural stockholding behavior as a technology of regional consumers who allocate regional supply to current consumption or future consumption (storage carried over to the next period), and (3) explore the sensitivity of the key factors introduced that determine stockholder’s responses.

Microreactor Core Transportation Cask Model Description for Criticality Safety Validation Basis Assessment (Rev. 2)

Sensitivity and similarity analyses are also performed using the TSUNAMI sequence of SCALE 6.3.2, and the similarity analysis uses all the experiments from the ICSBEP Handbook with High Enriched Uranium (HEU), Intermediate and mixed Enriched Uranium (IEU) and Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) systems. Many ICSBEP experiments were found marginally similar, with similarity index (ck) values greater than 0.8, to the GCMR and HPMR cask models, especially in flooded conditions that may be more constraining due to reduced reactivity margins. Some experiments using TRISO fuel particles and graphite moderator, including the recent THETA and Deimos experiments from LANL, together with some IRPhEP experiments, were also used for the similarity analyses. These TRISO-fueled and graphite moderated experiments behaved similarly to the GCMR models, with maximum ck value greater than 0.9, but they are less similar to the HPMR models. This observation indicates that additional critical experiments might be needed to further validate the criticality safety models, especially for heat-pipe based microreactor transport packages and for non-flooded transportation configurations.

Core Model Proposal #350: Detailed Natural Gas Trade

This core model proposal adds detail to GCAM's natural gas trade model by separating gas trade between Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and six regional gas pipeline networks. This entails creating new trade markets for global LNG and the six regional pipeline networks, and modifying the regional natural gas sector in each region to reflect the competition between LNG and pipelines within imported natural gas, and between different pipeline networks. The nesting subsector capability (CMP #299 Infinite Subsector Nesting) was used to represent this additional level of competition on the consumption side.

Core Model Proposal #410: Updates to Socioeconomic and Macroeconomic Data, Processing Structure, and Visualization

This Core Model Proposal (CMP) comprehensively restructures and updates the macroeconomic and socioeconomic modules in gcamdata. It includes visualizations of key data inputs, accounting identities, and data flows in the context of GCAM-Macro-KLEM. Major improvements include: (1) updating the Penn World Table (PWT) to version 10 and incorporating a new source, the Global Macro Database (GMD); (2) updating the SSP socioeconomics database from version 3.0.1 to 3.2; (3) introducing SSP-specific differentiation of employment and labor force data; (4) improving data integration between national accounts (from PWT, GMD, and GTAP) and GDP/population data from external sources; and (5) general data cleaning and structural refinements. We document the data sources and key assumptions used throughout the processing. These updates establish the foundation for the forthcoming KLEAM version of GCAM-macro.

SPRUCE Root Tip and Ectomycorrhizal Fungi Colonization Measurements from Ingrowth Cores, 2017

This data set contains root tip and ectomycorrhizal fungi colonization measurements taken from ingrowth cores from the SPRUCE experiment (Hanson et al. 2017) that were deployed during the 2017 growing season (2017-06 to 2017-10-01). This study explored the relationship between warming treatments and fine-root growth. Increased fine-root growth may increase root exudates and accelerate turnover, representing an underlying mechanism for peat decomposition through priming, as exudates provide a labile carbon source to the microbial community. Roots of two tree species were studied: an evergreen conifer Picea mariana (black spruce) and a deciduous conifer Larix laricina (tamarack). Measurements include root tips counts and densities by tree species and the abundance of ectomycorrhizal colonization on root tips. This dataset contains one data file in comma separate (.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: one data dictionary and a file-level metadata file in comma separate (.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.
